    Hello Jessie,
This is Brian from New Zealand. I have a Mac Pro 5,1 and it had Mojave installed with a PCI SSD 256gb and a Radeon Sapphire graphics card. I wanted to install new software so I could run Adobe Creative Cloud apps properly .
I read all the instructions from various sources on how to use Open Core Legacy. I churned through channels and channels of very good you tube tutorials , but the one thing no one could solve for me was the boot picker problem - EFI boot picker screen.
THEN … after two months of trying and ready to throw my beautiful Mac Pro in the bin, I found YOU!
Magnificent! You solved my exact problem. How you explained it all was absolutely brilliant. I now have a magnificent Mac Pro 5 ,1 fully upgraded and oh my, the speed and power. Adobe apps are performing like from Heaven.
Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart. You now have a devoted follower.

Just updated my 2010 Mac Pro 5.1to Sonoma with no issues using OCLP and your excellent advice Thankyou so much. The only difficulty I had is the stage when you insert the USB EFi to set up the installation. Unfortunately as you say this doesn’t seem to work when you have a metal GPU such as the Radeon Sapphire 580 as there is no EFI Boot screen.
Luckily I found the solution advised yourJessie’s Flying channel by removing all drives, booting up with the EFi USB in place then shutting down. Restarting with a drive in then worked perfectly.
So grateful to be able to continue using my Mac Pro for some time yet! Next challenge is setting up a drive with Windows so I can run some windows 3D scanning software. Thanks again to the whole team that make this possible. I did ponder whether I might have problems with an older Mac Pro but it seems to have updated correctly so far.

Hi Jessie, what a lifesaver of a tutorial. After upgrading my dual cpu Mac Pro 5,1 (X5690 cpu's, NVME drive on PCIE adapter, PC version of rx580 gpu, 48GB of RAM, upgraded wifi/bluetooth adapter, MacOS Mojave) I was totally frustrated by the inability of my machine to display the OCLP EFI boot option on startup. For several days I tried every possible thing I could think of, scoured the forums and youtube for solutions all to no avail. I was on the point of giving up when I found you tutorial and bingo! I am successfully running Monterey and can finally get a decent night's sleep. Next step is ubgrade to Sonoma. So thank you Jessie for all the effort you put into sharing your expertise with us less technically minder users.

Hello again Jessie. Despite watching three of your videos about ten times, I fail to understand the reason for using a blank drive. I even bought a new SATA SSD. Tbh the ideal thing for me would be to use opencore to be able to run the update on my current system drive. So if I want to achieve this do I just re-connect my current drive at the end of the process shown in this video, instead of connecting a blank drive?

Great video Jessie. How the hell do you know this stuff!! Your knowledge is astounding. A few questions please?
    1. Do I HAVE to use an SSD? Can I use a regular blank Hard drive?
    2. The Hard Drive I would LIKE to use has so many apps, 100s of plugins and customizations that I’ve perfected over many years for work. If I use a PC Card (I have the same Sapphire btw), does it mean that the only way I can move to Big Sur would be to forfeit my customizations?
    3. Is there anyway, to install Big Sur on an existing HD and keep my customizations? (even if I have to use a USB Drive)?

If I install Monterey to a new blank SSD in one of the drive bays like you did (and just leave the NVME currently as is; I would still remove temporarily to install Monterey) would I still be able to go back and forth from Mojave to Monterey either through opencore or startup disk?

If so, which graphics card would you recommend me to buy to replace the Radeon VII and compatible with Sonoma? Finally: if I try to connect one of the monitors to the HDMI port of the Radeon VII should I still see the OC Boot? Furthermore, since I had to change keyboards during the installation tests (with the same extended Apple keyboard) because one suddenly no longer responded to Command+R, Command+Option+P+R and Command+Option commands. Hi Jessie,
Your instructions for the MacPro are wonderful. I'm going to go for an upgrade on it.
I have the same problem as you described, that I can't see the bootselctor because of the metalcard for Mojave.
    Now my question:
I have an SSD PCIe card installed. The MacOS Mojave installed on it I want to update with OpenCore to Monterey and not completely reinstall because otherwise I would have to reinstall all my programs again.
What do I have to do to make this work:
    - Take out PCIe card like all other hard drives
    - Boot USB-Stick and delete NVRAM
    - Turn off the Mac again
    - Reinstall the PCI card with MAcOS Mojave
    - Boot from USB stick
    - Install Monterey over it
Does it fit like this or is there still something to basically consider when updating the system?
    Many greetings

Here’s my story, maybe it’s useful to some:
Followed the instructions, booted the Mac.
It booted right into the installer. No EFI whatever to choose. No Open Core showed up. I let it install.
In the middle of the installation process the Mac just shut down.
So I thought that I did something wrong. After endless drive in and out swapping, redoing the USB, countless NVRAM resets and researching the internet I found out that my my Mac did not have the right firmware which has to be 1.44.
Mine was still on 140. To update the firmware one must install High Sierra on a drive connected to a SATA port and then start the Mojave installer which will tell you that your Mac needs a firmware update and will tell you what to do. No need to install Mojave after the firmware is up to date. My Mac was already running Mojave but did not have the right firmware nonetheless.
After the firmware update the Mac was still booting directly into the installer, still no EFI whatever.
    No Open Core showing up.
After even more endless messing around out of sheer frustration I just let the installer run and et voila, it worked. Just like that.
    Conclusion:
    You need firmware 1.44.
Check at „About This Mac - System Report“
It doesn’t matter when Open Core doesn’t show up like shown in this video at 3.21.
Just running the installer might work !

This was very helpful Thankyou, I have a Mac Pro 5,1 with RX580 Only thing i am having trouble with is after starting up again Open core tells me it has detected i am booting from usb would i like to install to disk. So i go through installing Opencore to Internal HD it then asks me to reboot again, Its at that point i cant get into boot selector to chose the Internal EFI to boot from there. Can you help me with this? any tips?

if you unplug the USB, it should boot from EFI Boot from your harddisk after a few seconds...

@@JessiesFlying ended up not booting the EFI but swapping to old graphics card to reboot, now working without the usb. Thanks for your help!

Jessie, does the HDD/SSD need to be blank or can it have the old mac os on it? thanks in advance

If it has an old macOS then Setup will perform an update, not a new install….
