@@morgonaut Back then there's not much you can do with it and not a lot of people actually can afford the Trash Can Mac Pro as well as its limitation for upgrading. I had a lot of funs doing it. What is the best GPU you can get for that Mac Pro?
I knew with the name Sonnet, it would be pricey, but $299 isn't bad considering you're only taking one slot. Its a game changer for machines that don't have a bunch of expansion available.
@@Messiah38yes, but very few people use old machines like the Commodore 64. For any kind of modern web browsing they won’t work because they lack a gui. The 2007-2010 Mac pros are showing their age when it comes to the professionals who originally bought them. People who rendered or worked in music production have probably already moved on because the slow Xeons and slow ddr3 ram can’t compete with modern systems.
@alexroot6615 - I'm glad you like my style, share my videos on forums/socials so it can help to more people and that will in return help to me to produce for you more quality content and still for free.
FWIW, the slots in a MP5,1 are as follows; slot 1 16x, slot 2 8x, slot 3 & 4 4x. Since the W5500 is just a single slot width you could put it in the 8x slot next to it. I'd be interested to know if the nvme raid0 could do even better in that slot. 😊 Stick a couple of Xeon X5690 six cores in there and you've got a ridiculous machine considering its age. Great video. Wish I could afford that Sonnet card, it's pretty awesome.
@cenewton3221 - that's not so black & white as you think. There are many people who prefer less CPU cores on higher frequency than more cores and lower freq. Same with the slots arrangement. I have here 96GB of RAM upgrade as well as two X5690 but I intentionally didn't upgrade it. I plan some future video about it, but time is my enemy.
The McFiver’s 10 gigabit does not work in Mac Pro 5,1 in Mac OS but it does work in Windows, I reviewed this card many months ago and I am using it but it’s a really not cost effective for the 5,1 due to the 10Gb not working it just crashes the computer as soon as you connect the Ethernet cable, if you know of a fix please let me know.
@@morgonaut interesting, but you don’t show it connected in the video? Sonnett gave me the card for 300 to do a review and I was on support with them several times, they said the 10 gig chip is no longer compatible with the 5,1 because apple changed the driver and uses a different 10GbE chip even though sonnet originally designed the card for the 5,1 and that it works fine in the 7,1. Because of this they no longer market it for the 5,1. I am not the only person who has this issue many on Reddit that bought the card had it as well. 10G does work in Windows 11 running on the same 5,1.
I'm with Sonnet in contact very often. of course Sonnet said it's not compatible because the drivers are in macOS Monterey and macOS Monterey is not officially compatible with Mac Pro 5,1 :)) Sonnet are very honest and clear, so they can't promise any compatibility which is not officially compatible. That's best approach and I value that. But you know very well how to run unsupported Monterey on MP5,1 but that's not officially compatible
@@morgonaut I wish you showed it actually working in the video with iStat to show 10GbE transfer speeds, you just show it in the system profiler which I can do as well. Lots of folks with the card have the same issue I have it’s not just my system. I’m on 12.6.6 So maybe the driver got broken in a later OS update. One of my emails from Sonnett support to me about the Ethernet port. “Regrettably, the McFiver PCIe card is not compatible for use on the Mac Pro 5,1. We have seen that the USB and M.2 items can work, but the Ethernet will not consistently function within a Mac Pro 5,1. For 10GbE capability with your Mac Pro 5,1, we would instead recommend our Solo10G, or our Presto 10GbE PCIe cards here. The Solo10G card are plug-and-play compatible on macOS 10.13.6 and above, and the Presto cards are compatible from macOS 10.8.5 and above with driver installation.” looking back it looks like I first tried the card with 12.6.2 so maybe the drivers got updated with 12.6.2

@edwardlujan1325 - because I wanted to show to people even with the base CPU the Mac Pro is still great machine in some other planned videos. i have all upgrades ready here for years, just didn't find the time to do it
Thanks Teresa, great info and presentation. In this video are you running Monterey with standard OpenCore Legacy Patcher or with Martin Lo's version? I heard that only Martin Lo's works well with 10Gbit ethernet.
I had no idea people were still using the old cheese grater Mac Pro. I feel inspired to do this if I can get my hands on a model that still works. I wish all Macs were upgradeable. I think this whole planned obsolescence is bad for the environment.
@ArtofLovingsoul - for many people the Cheesegrater Mac Pro is still good enough for their needs. And I believe bad for environment are the people itself :)
I just installed the McFiver card in my 2012 Mac Pro " Cheesegrater" . Now I need to figure out how to install Monterey using your " New Way" Bare Metal Hpervisor .
@randyyoung2135 - that's quite easy for me to configure "The New Way", if you want I can do it for you remotely during video call. Links for my help are in video description
Thanks for the video! I can't get to boot manager with Option key pressed after installing the card on MarPro 5,1. I have old programs that require Mojave OS. Is there a workaround for this?
Hi Teresa. FIrst and foremost, thanks a lot for such a great informative content. I really helps to sort things out. I have a question though. I see the GPU you use in your Mac Pro 5.1 is rather thin in its form factor. Would you please let me know what GPU this is ?
I stumbled across this by mistake but I'm so happy to have found your tutorial. I was just wondering... I'm a musician like you and have some sample libraries that need to be read from a hard drive. Do you think that I could use an NVMe in an enclosure that's plugged into the USB slot on my Mid 2012 Cheesegrater? Do you think that the read times would be adequate? Thanks Theresa! :)
@colinaguiar9682 - obviously yes you can but that's something I would never recommend 😇 I provide 1-on-1 support and solutions for music and video studios so best for you would be to meet on a video call and then I can suggest optimal setup for your specific use case. Link is in video description.
3000 MB/s means each SSD running at around 1500MB/s which roughly is limitation of PCIe 2.0 (2000MB/s) - sure that's still VERY good, but nowadays single SSDs can go over 7000MB/s, and USB-C meanwhile drops from 1000MB/s to 700MB/s due to overall PCIe 2.0 limitation.... so such card is really just for "older" Intel Macs
I loved my Mac Pro 5,1 with upgraded 12 Core CPU, Dual NVME, USB-C and good graphics card. A joy to use and to upgrade. Over all the best Mac I've ever had. The new Apple silicon Mac Pro is a joke in comparison.
@@morgonaut Mainly because it isn't upgradable anymore (except pci), they didn't rethink the case for Apple Silicon (maybe make it smaller?) and there is no performance increase compared to the Mac Studio while beeing much more expensive.
@@quma001 we need to wait for a comparison of Mac Studio M2 Ultra with 60C or 76C GPU and Mac Pro with additional GPU Card. nVidia RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 4090 (for machine learning) or AMD RX 7900 XT.
Thanks for the video! Back in 20015 thought I was getting 5,1 but it ended up being 4,1. Couldn’t test when I picked it up, and was confused about the different versions. That thing is now a beautiful giant door stop! 😂😂😂😂😂 Also have an old 3,1 that I had forever. Wish I could do something with them. Ended up purchasing a used Mac Mini 6,1. Put (2) 2T SSDs internal and upgraded to the max 16g. Used OpenCore to patch for Venture. It’s not bad! Since I’m using it for home recording, just for me, thought about getting another i7 and move the i5 to run just VSTs and connect via MIDI. Don’t know if it’s doable or not.
I would never use 5,1 as a door stopper like you! That's a sin! 😇 BTW 5,1 is by my opinion much better for music production than 6,1 - well it's in fact overall much better 😂
Thank you Teresa for an incredibly interesting work. I wanted to ask you if the MacPro 5.1 power supply can handle the video card AND Radeon RX5700XT 8gig ?
The 5,1 Mac Pro gets NEW life. I have a 2009 4,1 Mac Pro that I have been trying to flash to 5,1 but have been unsuccessful in doing. Can you make a video on how to do this ?
can you imagine how much money, time, resources, effort etc. it takes to produce such video just for you? I'm happy to do that but I'm not a millionaire with unlimited resources
That's incredible! Had no idea such performance existed from such a simple add-in card. How can it be added to Apple Silicon Mac's, I don't think any of them have pci slots (except the recently announced newest Mac Pro). Would love to hear your thoughts on Apple Silicon and the future of Apple mac computers. Love your videos.
@SinisterSpatula - "How can it be added to Apple Silicon Mac's" - darling in this video I said exactly that I will show you in some next video so make sure you subscribe and enable all notifications so you won't miss it 😇
What GPU are you finding that can maximize or balance best performance for the video in conjunction with the drive speed? I think we've got PCIe 2.0x16 for both the bottom and second up slots, but squeezing a GPU and a Sonnet card in this is pretty difficult and it's going to be rough to cool properly. Sure would be interesting if there were an option to externalize both of these or the entire PCIe bus for that matter and perhaps even provide more slots... any thoughts?
Bought you a beer this past weekend after watching this video 😀 (under my real name and not my RUclips handle). Amazon no longer stocks the McFiver in Canada but I think the product is worth importing from the USA. I’ll use it with my MP7. Appreciate all the effort you put in and the quality of your videos.

I have a quick question...which I'm sure you can answer...I have a mid 2012 mac pro....is it possible to upgrade the processor to to one that has the AVX technology in it?
@803MUSICGROUP - honestly from my head I can't remember all CPU specs from past 12 years :) But in general I would not bother with upgrading CPU in 12 years old system and rather get any newer Apple Silicon Mac which is extremely cheap these days compared to old systems like you have in terms of price/performance

I still use my 5,1 Cheese Grater. its may main machine still, I got tons of ram, and the best upgrade is first a PCI SSD card. Like night and day. The main issue with these macs is the weak Video card. I upgraded to a "MSI AMD HD 7950 Twin Frozr III 3GD5/OC PCIe x16 3.0 Video Card". It just recently gave up the ghost and I played hell finding another one. I think maybe the last one available. The next upgrade after the SSD has to be the video card. The one that gave up the ghost had a HDMI slot but this new one does not. What are you gunna do.
@@morgonaut I will tell you. Hear me out. Back in ancient times, Adobe started buying up all it's competitors. That included Macromedia whos products were and still are light years better than the best Adobe apps. I knew then Adobe was going to kill off all the great apps and I read adobe was going to force everyone to Start RENTING their products so then you could not OWN any of their products. I am sorry I am NOT GONG to RENT SOFTWARE. So I bought the huge CS6 master suite. Had everything including After effects for like $2,600. I use after effects almost every day. CS6 After effects will not Run on any OS above 10.5, which is what I run becasue of that fact. BUT it will not run the cards you mentioned. My OS on that machine is so outdated the browes dont even work..... But Iam not paying rent for my programs that still do magical work. I have researched 100s of hours on a better card. The only ones I can find that will run under OS10.5 that I know. If you know of another GPU that will run under 10.5 I am all ears. Its not the machine I have issues with per say for a newer GPU its the OS I still have to run. There are a handful of apps I use such as Photoshop, Illustrator, after effect and blah blah blah. Renting them each month is higher than my car payment I have other machines that are up to date but all my heavy lifting is on this old 5,1 running OS 10.5
@rich6081 - I remember those days very well, I started on QUadra 650 about 30 years ago and I also bought pre-Creative Suite Adobe stuff, I have still here even installation of Photoshop 2.0 on 3.5" diskettes and many other software. And I also bought CS1, CS2, CS4, CS6. But these days it's simply bad idea to use Adobe because it's overpriced UNOPTIMIZED crap. So makes no sense to me wasting so much performance on table just because someone want to use Adobe.

at the price of the card, is it really cost efficient to add it to a 5,1? yes the performance is incredible, but that's roughly the price of the entire mac pro! adding this to the 2019 or 2023 Mac Pros would be good, although 10GbE and thunderbolt 3 ports are already built in, but I'm sure nobody would say no to more!

I knew with the name Sonnet, it would be pricey, but $299 isn't bad considering you're only taking one slot. Its a game changer for machines that don't have a bunch of expansion available.
@bangdollarsign - I always repeat for what it offers it's cheap and can bring new life to otherwise dead machines
Mac Pro will never be a dead machine. A computer is what you make of it, people still using Commodore Amiga and C64 to connect to internet
@@Messiah38yes, but very few people use old machines like the Commodore 64. For any kind of modern web browsing they won’t work because they lack a gui. The 2007-2010 Mac pros are showing their age when it comes to the professionals who originally bought them. People who rendered or worked in music production have probably already moved on because the slow Xeons and slow ddr3 ram can’t compete with modern systems.
great energy! you kept me entertained despite little interest in the outcome of this video! you have got some serious talent in presentation!
I plan some future video about it, but time is my enemy.
this machine just wont die! sonnet are legends too
@brafya - yes, I agree - Sonnet, Cheesegrater and me are legends 😂
@@morgonaut your knowledge and helpful attitude will ALWAYS make you legend!
@brafya - hihi my attitude is attractive only to smart people 😂
In order to get the Aquantia 107 or 110 drivers to work under OCLP you need to modify the patch. I have 10Gbe network running on my 5,1.
Can you Shared how to modify the patch or a link? I been trying with OCLP 0.6.8 I’m dying to used the 10Gbps Ethernet Port
The McFiver’s 10 gigabit does not work in Mac Pro 5,1 in Mac OS but it does work in Windows, I reviewed this card many months ago and I am using it but it’s a really not cost effective for the 5,1 due to the 10Gb not working it just crashes the computer as soon as you connect the Ethernet cable, if you know of a fix please let me know.
it's not crashing my MP5,1 at all, so your crashes was related to your specific setup and not in general
The Solo10G card are plug-and-play compatible on macOS 10.13.6 and above, and the Presto cards are compatible from macOS 10.8.5 and above with driver installation.” looking back it looks like I first tried the card with 12.6.2 so maybe the drivers got updated with 12.6.2
maybe you should read disclaimer I showed in this video and which is also in the video description. There is always someone like you who will always write comment "I wish you would do XYZ"... You as a content creator must get the same, so please don't be like the others. Read, watch, all the info needed is there. Why haven't you upgrade your cpus to either xeon 5280 or 5290 and your ddr3 to 1333mhz maybe in the another video for content ?
@edwardlujan1325 - because I wanted to show to people even with the base CPU the Mac Pro is still great machine in some other planned videos. i have all upgrades ready here for years, just didn't find the time to do it
@morgonaut very cool looking forward to it mac pro are awesome machines
Thanks Teresa, great info and presentation. In this video are you running Monterey with standard OpenCore Legacy Patcher or with Martin Lo's version? I heard that only Martin Lo's works well with 10Gbit ethernet.
So great to see you, Teresa! I'm looking forward to more of your great content. Respect!🙏
Hi Bruce, nice to see you too here again :) Thanks for kind comment... 💜
So great for my beloved Mac Pro 5,1. I m an owner of an m1 MacBook but I still love my old MacPro.
Mac Pro 5,1 is still absolutely amazing machine
hi is that speed the same with one 8tb card using it on 5.1 Mac Pro with protools is it worth moving to this format
Hi, just wondering what editing program do you use since I love how you edited this video.
@DdsRUclips - if you would read any of my video descriptions you would know I use DR. But thanks, I do all my effects myself
@@morgonaut Okay thank you!
@@morgonaut Thank you so much Teresa! I just sent you an email. Looking forward to chatting.
"so such card is really just for "older" Intel Macs" - what are you talking about? That's BS. I can get from that card 14 GB/s in newer Mac!
@@morgonaut and Sonnet now has PCIe NVME card which gives 30GB/s in new M2 MacPro :)
I already achieved 28 GB/s in 2019 Mac Pro - watch my videos
I loved my Mac Pro 5,1 with upgraded 12 Core CPU, Dual NVME, USB-C and good graphics card. A joy to use and to upgrade. Over all the best Mac I've ever had. The new Apple silicon Mac Pro is a joke in comparison.
why do you think "it's a joke"?
4,1 can be successfully, painlessly upgraded to a 5,1.
@JonTrott - sure, almost everybody do that. But congrats you made it too :) Enjoy your old Cheesegrater as I do all mu old Macs
Thank you Teresa for an incredibly interesting work. I wanted to ask you if the MacPro 5.1 power supply can handle the video card AND Radeon RX5700XT 8gig ?
@olesbadio1496 - yes it can :)
@SinisterSpatula - "How can it be added to Apple Silicon Mac's" - darling in this video I said exactly that I will show you in some next video so make sure you subscribe and enable all notifications so you won't miss it 😇
PCIe Expansion Cases
That you get from sonnet also
Great video. Any possibility to use that on a 3,1?
What GPU are you finding that can maximize or balance best performance for the video in conjunction with the drive speed? I think we've got PCIe 2.0x16 for both the bottom and second up slots, but squeezing a GPU and a Sonnet card in this is pretty difficult and it's going to be rough to cool properly. Sure would be interesting if there were an option to externalize both of these or the entire PCIe bus for that matter and perhaps even provide more slots... any thoughts?
Good work. How you put system above Mojave on Mac 5.1 ?
Funky track at the intro. Who's the artist?
Bought you a beer this past weekend after watching this video 😀 (under my real name and not my RUclips handle).

@rich6081 - why would you want to upgrade to ancient 7950 when you can have recent RX 5000 or 6000 series??? Makes no sense to me
@@morgonaut I will tell you.
Renting them each month is higher than my car payment
I have other machines that are up to date but all my heavy lifting is on this old 5,1 running OS 10.5

@florentinadrian - I believe best way for you would be to have a Zoom video call with me where we could discuss all your needs, expectations, workflow etc. so then based on that I could suggest to you the best possible setup for your specific use case. Link where you can book video meeting and remote session you can find in each of my video descriptions. Simply www.patreon.com/morgonaut or www.morgonaut.cloud/get-help
This is a nice card thanks for the review!

Thanks!
Welcome
sorry I am referring to Ethernet
Morgonaut this is insane!!!
😇
A great way to breathe new life into an old rig with modern conveniences. This will be perfect for my old i7 3rd gen build
yes, that's exactly as you said 😀
@@morgonautenjoy your affiliate kick back! You deserve it! Just used the link to purchase it
@Popo Ramos - for your purchase Amazon would send me something around $7.50 at maximum(then I need to pay several fees from it, taxes etc.) so at the end I will get like $3 or so and that's obviously nothing against how much money, time and effort I wasted on bringing you this useful video. But thank you for being smart and grateful, you are one of only 0.015% percent of people doing so. If all people would act like you then it would be almost heaven on Earth
@@morgonaut Reporting back, finally got it installed and its working flawlessly! I’m able to take advantage of everything this card has to offer. I went with a single 4gb drive, with plans on adding another in the near future. Thank you! The only part that I probably need a workaround is that the USB C are in the back, a little bit impractical for daily use.
you can put this card into TB enclosure and place it on your desk right in front of you if you don't like that all PCs have slots on the back of computer 😇
Great & Lovely Support

@kamlesh8818 - thank you very much. Take care...
i have the one of the best Mac Pro 5.1,but without this😢
so it's not the best one yet :) Then you should get the McFiver
@@morgonaut it cant be bought in China😤
@@morgonaut it cant be bought in China😤
I thought everything is possible in China as a country with unlimited options 😂
@@morgonaut I’ve been dual x5690,128GB ram,4TB nvme ssd and RX 6900xt liquid cooler,Gigabyte’s TBT3 card ,in front usb 3.1 Type A&C,also the new wifi ,but no 10Gb Eport 🥲 because no pcie solt anymore.
That's very cool!!! Thanks for posting!
Glad you liked it Bob 😇
Great!!! I see you use Radeon graphic card..is it supporting métal? Of yes What is the référence ? I use a gtx 680 but it is too big … Thanks
of course my GPU supports Metal :) It's a Navi GPU. You know I like 1 slot GPUs
Did you say on here that you were installing this in a 2019 mac? I will buy this expensive set up for my mid 2012 mac pro tower if it really works
@a-1equiptment367 - why don't you bother to watch at least few seconds of my video FIRST? Why don't you bother to read precise video description FIRST? Then you would not need to ask and take away even more of my time than I did while producing of this FREE video for you
@ no disrespect I watched your video. I have two mid 2012 Mac towers that I currently use and I would love to be able to run new software for the operating system. I will purchase one of those cards and two of the drives what I would need to know from you is do I use a bootable versionof what to start off with?
@ on a USB drive I assume is there any other set up besides installing the card with the 28 TB drives on it? Do I need to download any firmware or anything else? Also, do I need to change my video card? If so, what do you use?
Dear Morgonaut! Thank you so much for your great videos! I am a big fan of your clear explanations 🤩..I have 4x MP 5,1 with Open Core running at my studio and bought McFiver cards for all of them. Then I discovered, that the 10Gbe is not working and found a workaround, installing Big Sur with an additional Solo10G PCIe Cards to the McFivers to have access to my RAID at 10Gbe speed. With the update from Jazzzny it is now possible to run Monterey with all options of the McFiver card, including 10Gbe! Please stay as clear and professional as you are and don't be dragged down by the people who can't manage to read your text inserts in the videos😋All the best wishes from Vienna!
@clemensfischer - I'm glad you like my production. Best thanks would be if you share my videos on forums/socials so it can help to more people and that will in return help to me to produce for you more quality content and still for free.
BTW can you reach my on email in ABOUT this channel? I'd like to discuss the MP with you personally.
@clemensfischer - I see you wrote me email and I already answered to you, I hope you will find it interesting.
So how well does the 10gbe port work? That part wasn’t mentioned in the video
@D. Harris - "that part" is clearly written in this video and is also written in video description!!! Why so many people can't watch carefully and don't bother to read????? 👿 Why you waste my time??
PLEASE PART 2
what exactly you want to see in "PART 2"? 😇
YES
@@morgonaut
"YES"?? You want to see "YES"???? 😕
@@morgonautjust ignore it
Super cool but so damn expensive... 300.00 for just a card is way over the top for an upgrade on such an old computer....if these were 100.00 or less, heck yeah!
@skip741x3 - it is not "just a card", it is very well feature rich card which can bring new life to old Mac Pro as well as new Macs and PCs
Not so especific regarding the bootable NVMe
Any more information
@izidrew - ??? what's your comment about?
@@morgonaut Sorry that I was to clear. What I would like to know is, if the NVME strips are not raided it will show up with 2 volumes and one of them will be bootable if is not raided, right? Even if there is a Partition? Can you make a partition from a RAID? I would like to have a RAID 1 with a bootable partition???
@izidrew - I said that in this video clearly and I also linked the official specs in video description so what you need more??
only wish you could boot from RAID....
@denisstrok9898 - then you're happy guy when you miss only single thing, I would wish so many things to be different 😂
@@morgonaut 😁🙏
Damn, this card is more expensive than my entire 5,1 with x5690 and 128GB ram.
@vesszbali - that's quite expected when you put modern card into almost 15 year old computer right?
Will this card work if I'm on Mojave? I'm afraid to use OpenCore because my Titan Ridge card is working perfectly with thunderbolt.
@djperu - it's futile try to help people! All info I provide inside of the video and in video description, so when you are lazy to watch or read then better don't comment. Thanks
@@morgonautit actually doesn’t say in either description. Only says “Mac OS”.
Eeek! Your upgrade there comes to $2,000 on Amazon! MacFiver plus two 8TB blades. UFF! I love my Cheesegrater....but with its age...not sure I can make that investment. Even down at 2x2TB, it is at $600.
@tomdfrog - nobody is forcing you to bring new life to your Cheesgrater Mac Pro, do what you want
Wait, did she just put the heatsink without removing the blue plastic cover?
@Fabrice Manzi - darling don't try to school me, don't teach eagle to fly. I already used that McFiver so there was no sticker on it for months! Maybe you didn't notice but I'm not an idiot! 😇
That's works in a midi 2009 mac pro?
@rafaelxavier8161 - ??? right in this video I showed it in 2009 Mac Pro!
@@morgonaut understood, i’m going to try this an a apple server, do you think that it’s the best option?
