That twins bedroom hits hard, the way you can see one frozen in time and the other grow out into an adult, the western/space contrast and the door markings with the heights. It’s genius but so depressing
The interesting thing about Molly is that it is highly theorized that she hallucinated all of the animal things because of the holly berries she ate as they are poisonous. The toothpaste didn’t help either.
There’s also another theory that the edie (Edith’s grandmother) blames and dramatizes the “curse” as a way to cope and reject the fact that death is a real thing and not some supernatural force, as she was desensitized and almost celebrated the death of her family members with murals. (Sorry if this is long)
@@TotalTrashmMammals I believe it was hallucinations, it’s not a curse that killed everyone, just a mix of bad luck and believing in the curse(though luck and bad luck aren’t real)
I'm gonna throw my hat in the theory ring for a second: I agree that Molly hallucinated from all the nasty junk she ate trying to satiate her hunger; but I think the predator sequence is a fever dream she experiences before ultimately dying. I think part of the reason she mainly goes after "Mama" animals in her dream/hallucination is she's obviously mad at her mom; and this is her little kid brain "taking revenge" the best way it knows how; kind of like how you'd threaten to run away when your parents grounded you. That's just what I took from it.
I honestly disagree with the hallucination theory for a simple reason: you don't need to eat the Holly berries to progress. You can eat the toothpaste and the carrot and the game let's you continue. What makes more sense to me is that she did end up going to bed (as we can see she is sleeping on her bed when the monster comes into her room) and everything that happened was a vivid dream that likely just came from her hunger. After becoming the monster in her dream, and because of this dream she *believed* there was a monster under her bed, when there actually was nothing. Eating either the berries or the toothpaste is likely what killed her, and that makes sense since you'd have to eat at least one of those things in order to progress. That's just my 2 cents though;
Ash actually sounds SO much like Edith's VA, almost every time she talked I was like "I dont remember that part of it, is she talking directly to Matt!?" for a second. Adds a whole other level to the game imo
At first, I was confused about why Gregory's room was a bathroom. Then, as the game progressed, I forgot about it. Then, when it's shown that the bathroom is Edie's bathroom, I finally realized the horror of why that's Gregory's room.
@@brendanotwolfhard4885 yeah but ive always found it odd. Its the only room "memorial" that isnt a bedroom. I dont think anyone else has that. Maybe Edie had the crib in her room and didnt have a seperate nursery set up yet. But why change the way the bathroom looks? And why pink shag carpet?
Gregory died after his parents separated, hence the call that distracted his mother. The divorce papers imply that they had not legally divorced yet. When someone (probably Edie) wanted to memorialize him besides his crib the pink bathroom was the most similar place to his death that was in the house because he didn’t die in the house, it was wherever his mother had taken him.
Was Eddie expecting Edith to die soon? “I was ten and she was painting my portrait” really sticks out to me. The people with the portraits of are the ones that died. This leads me to believe that she was expecting Edith to fall next, and was preparing for it while she was still living, but because they left the house, nothing ever happened to her until years later
I found this really weird cus edie only starts painting Lewis's portrait AFTER his death and She didn't have time to finish before dawn moved her into a home.. why start Edith's when she was so young IF she was perfectly healthy and safe? Also everyone's portraits are of them at the age they died, like she could've painted Barbara's portrait when she was a child but she waited to do it when she was a teenager. My question is why would edith the ONLY family member still alive be portrayed as a 10 year old in her MEMORIAL?
Ash's voice is so similar to Edith's VA that there were multiple times I got confused on which one was talking. I can't tell you how long I have been waiting for you guys to do a video on this game, it holds a special place in my heart for introducing me to youtubers I still watch and being the first game that I had the patience to watch a full playthrough of.
Molly's death put "there's a monster under my bed" to a whole new level, as well as "your not you when your hungry" it's really sad that the mother put HOLLY BERRIES which are POISONUS in a CHILD'S room while sending them to bed without dinner and LOCKING the room Edit: hi, you look lovely today
unfortunately all of this was very typical for the 40s. lots of things we weren’t fully aware of regarding toxicity, and sending your child to bed without dinner was a typical punishment. this is part of why i think AT LEAST at this point, edie wasn’t malicious, just careless. i also think she was guilty over this (and this led her to blaming a “curse” because it’s easier) and barbara until she rationalized the obsession with death she was developing by “immortalizing” her memory.
Fun Fact! I believe the purple flowers from the beginning are foxgloves! They are poisonous. This seems pretty fitting since themes of death are common in the game :)
This is game is hands down a masterpiece that I wish I could erase from my memory just so I can experience the bittersweet tale all over again. Btw there is another game called the Unfinished Swan that is tied to this game if ur interested in checking it out. It continues the tale of Milton. Or that's what a lot of fans believe. Please do a theory on the family in this game & the game of Unfinished Swan
I see the whole situation with Molly after she leaps through the window as a very clever metaphor of saying she "ate herself to death". She seems to be sick and sent to bed early as such but, starving as she was, Molly eats a very bad combo of stuff: A poopy carrot with also gerbil saliva bacteria; 40's toothpaste, which had fluoride and sulphate, among other stuff that even nowadays make it toxic if ingested in great amounts; and the holy berries, which are very poisonous. This combination on an empty stomach would probably get anyone tripping very badly, and so as she stuffs herself with more non edible stuff around her room, she imagines the predator bit, consuming herself. Very sad that she does come down from it just for long enough to narrate her last moments, but it does go with the theme of the rest of the family and the curse.
That's a good way to see what happened with her! Molly's story definitely got everyone off guard, and God how much I love her as a character. (her voice acting is so adorable too) such a tragic ending for her.
@@Andy-gg4xw Being sent to bed hungry is not abuse lol and she didnt strave to death most likely poison from the holly and gerbal food wich isnt entirely the parents fault
I think its metamorphic for her hunger and she starved to death thats why you went through as the animals eating everything she was writing her last moments in her diary
Small detail, but nevertheless amazing, There is a lot of foxglove flower around the house and woods. Foxglove is a plant that was commonly confused with another (of which I forget the name) and made into tea. The trouble is, the plant is highly poisonous when ingested and quite fatal.
@@arachnaphobicpal6873 It is often mistaken for *comfrey*, though I don't really see the resemblance, but I guess they're similar enough to mix them up.
It’s kinda funny that Matt ignored all the simple “oh it’s locked” messages(basement, attic and front door) but went straight to Molly’s story without seeing the messages Edith has to say about Molly’s room. Also he always goes into the rooms looking at the ground so he missed Eidith’s comments on entering Molly’s room and the pink carpet bathroom. Edit:Forgot to put he also didn’t see the dragon slide outside the house.
This is the only game, rather story that got me into actual tears, especially the 'fishy' part (if you played it, you'd know this part) It hit a little too close to home back then.
The fish section is my FAVORITE!!! It gets you into that mindset and you truly forget about the fish while you focus on everything else, and then the end is just.... ahhhh it's amazing. This game is stunning and I cannot express it enough.
@@HazzaLizzi oh gosh yeah... that one was so sad but so beautiful and fun. That's basically this game in a nutshell. The sorrowful, beautiful wonder of life.
On all the theories covering this game, does anyone ever cover Molly's room has a chain on the window? The neglect/abuse may run even deeper than it seems
Because it's a safety feature. Reckless children + easy to open and climb through windows without any sort of barrier around them is a serious hazard. Same reason most school windows only open partially/in a certain way (as well as intentional attempts). It's not like it can't open entirely, she could still let air in from outside if she needed to. It would be bad if there was an outer barrier and a safe way down from the window, or she was on the first floor of the house, and it was blocked, but from what I can tell that does not seem to be the case. Her seemingly not having a key to unlock her door though? Now that's dangerous. What if a fire started? What if someone broke in and she didn't have a safe exit route? What if she had an accident? What if she was sick or hurt herself or in some other type of distress (which clearly did happen)? Stopping your young child from potentially falling from a dangerous second story+ window is not negligent, not giving her a key to her own door is. (Rewritten because the text in my previous comment disappeared for some reason - in case anyone got a notification for it and was confused)
We actually need far more media dealing with death. people literally stopped living life out of fear of sickness and bringing death to someone by just being with them.
@BlackCroft666LP as much as i agree, because stuff like this (mental illness, child death/mistreatment, etc.) needs to stop being romanticized and shown in their true lighting, there still deserves to be a warning for people who've been through stuff like this and arent prepared to face it. games are a great way for people to communicate and develop understanding for harsh things like this (this dragon, cancer(?) is a good example of such things!), but games can also be a safe space and stuff like this can push people away rather than help, if not given the right warnings
If Mat thinks Mollys story was "Surprisingly dark" I can't wait to see how he reacts to the other storys 😂❤ (I dont think hes prepared, especially for Gregorys)
@@brendenhorn4646 TRUE!! Gregorys and Lewis storys were so hard to watch for me because you KNEW what was gonna happen but you can't do anything to stop it 😭❤️
i know they spent all of the molly section making jokes about it, but for some reason i cried during it. there’s a lot of parallels between those scenes and maladaptive daydreaming, a coping skill developed during childhood to escape traumatic stress. it seems a lot like the things with turning into animal was molly’s way of disguising a darker truth. when a child goes through periods of food being withheld, they often will eat large amounts to the point of making themselves sick, because their bodies go into survival mode and believe they need to prepare for the next time food will be taken away. it reminds me of extreme hunger molly describes. molly struggling with having unstable food sources and dealing with the sketchy things going on around her could have caused her to vividly imagine these things happening to the point where she really believed it in order to protect herself from the truth of it all.
This theory/interpretation also works with what many people say, that Molly is hallucinating because she ate Holly. It could be a mixture of the two. On that specific night, after being without food many times, Molly begins to eat anything she can, including the Holly, which when causes her to hallucinate while she is searching for more food in her survival state
I remember the first time playing that I didn’t really know what to expect and wasn’t in the right mindset for Mollys story. Going back now it’s much more emotional
this is accurate, but she wasnt eating food... she was eating toys and things around her room, imagining they were these creatures she was eating as different animals.... its sad because she was basically a starving 3-4 year old with no way to get out of her room......
@@mangledrose865 she was 11 when she died, though I still see your point. She did however eat "food" like the berries and the toothpaste. By no means food she should have eaten, but she did anyways
@@JDM-is-my-name yeah she was 10-11 your right, but she started hallucinating after the berries, and its never explained everything she consumed during that time, but i do feel a lot of it was just stuff around her room
Those lilies the kid was holding in the beginning of the game are specifically Cala lilies (the symbol of the Greek goddess of marriage) are commonly used for wedding bouquets. spider lilies, roses, and chrysanthemums are often used for funerals
Quick warning for everyone (viewers and players) of this game. It gets very dark at times and can often delve in the most depressing topics. I highly suggest to continue going on with this game with this in mind so you are prepared for what's to come. It isn't soul crushing, but one or two stories might stick with you and make you have to step back.
I'm most anticipating when they get to the Gregory sequence. That one always gets very visceral reactions, particularly from parents, and I'm curious to see what Matt thinks of it.
I still stand by the idea that Molly could've passed out from when she saw the bird on the window then continued the POV in her dream. So all the animal visions she had were in her dream. Then she woke up on her bed, suggesting that maybe her parents went into her room to bring her to bed (also because the curtains in the bathroom are closed or this could just be game design). She woke up to write everything and thinks that there is a monster under her bed waiting for her to sleep, when in reality she is losing energy from lack of food and passed out then died in her sleep.
It was almost guaranteed to be the berries, they're Holly and extremely poisonous if eaten. She probably wouldn't have eaten them if she wasn't so hungry. But they are likely the cause of death in her case.
I don't think it was lack of food, it was the berries she ate. Those berries in the bathroom were Holly berries, deadly poisonous. The feeling of getting hungrier and hungrier was the poison of the Holly berries in her stomach.
You know the your theory mixed with the berry explanation makes this all even sadder cause maybe like you said she passed out when seeing the bird because of the poison from the berries and her parents came in and didn't notice that she was poisond and if they did she could have survived
I loved Ash's "oh honey" . She seems to actually react to the games Mat plays more than MirrorMat did. He would ask questions and give comments but not react much
It looks like there's green smudges on Molly's sink… was there MOLD on this TEN-YEAR-OLD'S sink?!? Also, what's with the locked window?? How many days has Molly been locked in this room?!
They mention her having climbed out onto the tree in the past, so it's likely not about abuse or locking her up, but trying to keep her from hurting herself from falling out her window.
@@CodaBlairLucarioEmperor yeah I keep seeing people saying the chains on the window mean abuse… and I think considering we’re talking about a second story child’s window with no screen, I think that chain is pretty smart if you want to avoid your kid falling out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the neglect/abuse theory itself is incorrect. Just that I think the window chain being used as “evidence” of it is a bit silly.
So I haven't see the whole video but people get confused at what happened to Molly, so she ate hollyberries at her window which are poisonous and she was hallucinating everything after that until she eventually passed through the night...
Yeah. I've always thought when she hallucinated the rabbits, she was eating her gerbil, and the flipper of the seal? was Christopher. Doesn't match with all she said she ate, but I wouldn't put it past the story to go that dark too. Just a lil headcanon of mine.
I didn't notice that before!! Thank you. I would add that she might have actually caught a bird (during the cat sequence), especially if she actually climbed the branches outside before coming back in (I remember the line where she apologizes to her Dad for climbing the tree). After the gerbil/rabbit and seal/Christopher, she did eventually pass out/go to sleep- because she woke up in her bed. So perhaps that dream of eating humans foreshadows her own death. (Whether or not actual cannibalism happened). I think that would cover all of them!!
Matt's mystical ability to miss half the lore by looking for it aside, this game is like my comfort game. I've played it almost annually for years, I'm still undecided on whether or not the curse is real, it's so good. I highly recommend anybody reading this go buy it.
I think the curse isn't real bc every death that happens has a good explanation for it. Whether it be negligence, carelessness, mental illness, or something else.
When you finish playing this game, I highly recommand watching (either on stream on in your free time) the youtube video "The Villain of Edith Finch" by Joseph Anderson. It's in my opinion an essential complementary piece to the game, and brings to light a lot of elements that many people miss during their playthrough. It helps make sense of the story and what really happened to all those characters.
Love his discussion of it. At first I was like "huh, what do you mean villain??" And by the end I was downright upset about the whole situation. Very good
the twins story is the most emotional for me, because of the way his brother is the one who wrote the story and thought of how he wanted his brother to be remembered, doing something he wanted to do, and keeping his mind set to it, even if it was tragic and horrific, his brother wanted to remember him in the best way. I also think you maybe didn't fully understand Molly's story... she went to bed hungry, for some reason she didn't get to eat that night, and when she was locked in her room, she couldn't get out or ask for food, and in addition I think she wouldnt have anyways because of the way the family is, with their rules and locked doors, and peepholes, she probably wouldnt have gotten into her parents room anyways. She ate things she found around her room, think marbles, toys, things that a like 4 year old would put in their mouth, she ate them.... thats why her story is about being hungry and things tasting good, she was eating things until either she choked or the things she was putting into her body, eventually killed her.... its absolutely terrifying, and so sad. i wasn't sure if you got all that from the first playthrough...
"---I was a cat!" WELCOME TO THE REST OF THE GAME! Strap in and don't forget to leave reality at the door!! All jokes aside I really am so excited for you Matpat! This game is a theorists dream! And may i suggest playing the Unfinished swan after? Its made by the same people
(SPOILERS?) the unfinished swan kinda indirectly shows what happened to milton after he disappeared. you play as his son. so that means that there are 2 finches left alive, Monroe (milton’s son) and his cousin Christopher (edith’s son)
This was one of the first games where I was watching it and was like ‘I’d love for MatPat to play this.’ But then I thought he wouldn’t since it came out so long ago but then I see this and I’m so excited it’s great
Facinating that Ash has the same cadence of speech as the narrator in the game so just listening to the audio it's hard to keep track on what's happening in the game and not :)
I have no idea what's on everybody into it like I've seen like two of my favorite RUclipsrs including Matt Pat and then I seen so many more on my recommended I finish this game in like I would have to say when it came out 2017 it's an amazing game I loved every bit of it it's so pretty and so beautiful and so charming I loved it it was amazing it's got to be one of my top five top three actually favorite games number two spot goes to what remains of edith Finch
Just discovered this game a month or so ago. So weird to be knowledgeable about something before MatPat is 😆 Looking forward to a theory if there's one to be had... but if not, enjoy the journey!
Maybe even a food/game theory crossover where on game theory he talks about how maybe the animal part is tied to the things she ate and maybe a hallucination/dream and then on food theory if she would actually hallucinate from the food or how dangerous it would be to eat them.
22:35 I don’t think that was there main concern lol Edit: it’s weird to say but Eddie reminds me of my Nana, not the whole death thing but she was really stubborn and very secretive about her family. Still a really good game Edit: another detail I saw was when she says that the family got sick of salmon except there cat Molly, the girl who died of food poisoning was named Molly and in her photo she wears cat ears
Ash said Portia..and i was like "could it be??" Then it really was : D My time at portia, it's great if you like adventure/building style games (Im the voice of the male player and mint)
I think Molly, in eating all that toxic food, started hallucinating all those wild leaps and changes to animals- probably playing make believe in her room and in the end of it all resorted to self cannibalism she was so hungry. Like the way she wrote “I will be delicious” makes me assume that.
please finish this game! I love it so much and can't wait to see you explore it :') also when entering a new room don't look at the floor right away bc you'll miss certain dialogs with info about the room! you missed it for Edie's and in the pink bathrom (which was Kay's "room")
I actually started playing this game with my father a few years ago, but once we got to the "scary" animal transformation, I think we both got freaked out and stopped. Totally forgot about this game and so glad I get to see someone finish (or possibly finish) this game.
Matpat: as a ten year old have you even imagined being a predator and killing other animals? me: well ive seen about 100 of your dark theory videos and am watching more so yes
There really is no hidden lore or hidden side stories, everything is pretty much linear and everything interactable and "lore" based can be easily found.
Literally everything about Milton is secret lore. Canonically he disappeared never to be seen again. The relationship between him vanishing and then also becoming the King from The Unfinished Swan (which is something the devs had to confirm irl ) is completely unexplained.
@@jazzycat8917 True, I think if Mat was to do a game theory on this game it would be about what happened to Milton. It was always the part of the game that interested me the most, Especially when it ended and there was no definitive answer. Also I find it interesting that the game calls out seeing Miltons drawings in the secert passages. 🤔❤️
@@unluckyhamburger15 there can't be any theory's about Milton since we do know what happened to him. canonically he went through a portal like we see in his drawing where he became the king in the game unfinished Swan. A game made by the same company as this one that came out 5 years before edith finch did. The developers themselves confirmed it. Milton is really just a nod to one of their older games which ties the two of them together
You got so excited over the dragon slide! You can actually see the slide itself in the pond outside the house before you first enter it. I don't think you can go back to that point once you've entered, you might have to start a new save file for it, but it's kinda cool to look at so might be worth it.
Did you notice that Milton's painting gave us a clue who we're investigating next, like when in the first secret room there was a bird painting, and in Molly's story, she went out the window because of a bird, and the second secret room, there was a swing painting, and in Calvin's story, he died because of a swing.
I recently played this game myself and it's so beautiful and sad. I had to stop for a minute and cry when I finished Gregory. As someone who went through having a stillbirth, it really hit me hard, but it was done in such a beautiful way that it never felt morbid as a game element.
I totally did not realize this was from today and I was like "Wheres the next episode I want to see more reactions" lol Cant wait for you to play more, it is an amazing game!
Oh, I adored Edith Finch! Such a good game; rarely does a whole month go by in my life that I don't find myself randomly thinking about it. So many of those stories stay with me.
Mat surprised that the person who must stare at a screen for hours a day and make sure what's on that screen looks good is affected by the art style. Ash as always just peppy and happy about it. I mean, the 'no duh' was there, but it was so subtle and happy, "well, yeah, ... it better look pretty." I woulda just been like, "Dude, art is my JOB, what do you want from me? No DUH there's a pattern, theory man." I think I would be more like mirror matt in Mat's head than Ash. Then again, no one can be Ash. No one's that wholesome, even when criming.
I love the oddness of this game and also, the strangest thing behind too. Also, another game to try, that is an indie game, is “Gone Home.” “Gone Home” can be a bit dull, but there are some thinking behind it with the story.
Perfect time to play that game. Exams are done, and a lot of students are heading home for the summer. Very appropriate mindset to be in while playing this game.

I still don’t understand why they would plaster the death on the door unless everyone died in their bedroom if it’s the drowning route. But that makes no sense since Sven died outside, while his death is plastered on his bedroom. Maybe the baby didn’t have a dedicated room, but surely he should have gone with his parents room. Idk I guess I’ll have to wait to find out what any of this means.
@@anthonynguyen1289 there is alot that comes up that clarifies what you are confused about. Gregory does have his own "memorial" outside of the bathroom just takes a bit to find it.
Something that I’ve always loved about this game is how each persons story is told. Rarely ever do you hear the persons exact thoughts and words or are given a straight narrow line of how they died. All of it is hidden in mystery or imagination by the people who are telling these stories. You aren’t supposed to know what had happened because, well, you aren’t the person who died
I loved my playthrough of this game. Threw it on one night on a whim and finished it in the same sitting. I remember my living room lights were off. My wife fell asleep on the couch next to me.
@@ckinggaming5bucketmadness766 that’s what I was saying Edie used the idea of a “curse” to cope with the huge amount of death in the family.
Not quite luck is real that is what probability is
Yea there's a reason toothpaste for babies has less active agents, swallowing large amounts is not a great choice
I'm gonna throw my hat in the theory ring for a second:
I agree that Molly hallucinated from all the nasty junk she ate trying to satiate her hunger; but I think the predator sequence is a fever dream she experiences before ultimately dying.
I honestly disagree with the hallucination theory for a simple reason: you don't need to eat the Holly berries to progress. You can eat the toothpaste and the carrot and the game let's you continue. What makes more sense to me is that she did end up going to bed (as we can see she is sleeping on her bed when the monster comes into her room) and everything that happened was a vivid dream that likely just came from her hunger. After becoming the monster in her dream, and because of this dream she *believed* there was a monster under her bed, when there actually was nothing. Eating either the berries or the toothpaste is likely what killed her, and that makes sense since you'd have to eat at least one of those things in order to progress. That's just my 2 cents though;

At first, I was confused about why Gregory's room was a bathroom. Then, as the game progressed, I forgot about it. Then, when it's shown that the bathroom is Edie's bathroom, I finally realized the horror of why that's Gregory's room.
Wait why? Miscarriage?
@@Kitinelli gregory died in the bathroom because of his parents’ negligence. long story short he drowned in the bathtub while it was filling up.

This leads me to believe that she was expecting Edith to fall next, and was preparing for it while she was still living, but because they left the house, nothing ever happened to her until years later
everyone dies prematurely in their family so
I found this really weird cus edie only starts painting Lewis's portrait AFTER his death and She didn't have time to finish before dawn moved her into a home.. why start Edith's when she was so young IF she was perfectly healthy and safe? Also everyone's portraits are of them at the age they died, like she could've painted Barbara's portrait when she was a child but she waited to do it when she was a teenager. My question is why would edith the ONLY family member still alive be portrayed as a 10 year old in her MEMORIAL?
@Graceywacey007 exactly! That's why I thought that maybe she expected it to happen when Edith was a kid, but because they moved it didn't?

Molly's death put "there's a monster under my bed" to a whole new level, as well as "your not you when your hungry" it's really sad that the mother put HOLLY BERRIES which are POISONUS in a CHILD'S room while sending them to bed without dinner and LOCKING the room
Edit: hi, you look lovely today
She seemed especially intent on eating mothers for some reason, maybe because her mom locked her in her room that night
It was the 1940s they were very popular decorations.
unfortunately all of this was very typical for the 40s. lots of things we weren’t fully aware of regarding toxicity, and sending your child to bed without dinner was a typical punishment. this is part of why i think AT LEAST at this point, edie wasn’t malicious, just careless. i also think she was guilty over this (and this led her to blaming a “curse” because it’s easier) and barbara until she rationalized the obsession with death she was developing by “immortalizing” her memory.
@@quirkypurple3 I definitely agree.
@@quirkypurple3 I wonder whether her reading what Molly wrote lead Edie to wanting to immortalise everyone else's deaths with the stories

This game is so facinating in how "varied, and fantastical" all the stories are, yet how deeply dark you can see every single one of them ending.
Being in an abusive and negligent family is a curse in of itself.

Small detail, but nevertheless amazing, There is a lot of foxglove flower around the house and woods. Foxglove is a plant that was commonly confused with another (of which I forget the name) and made into tea. The trouble is, the plant is highly poisonous when ingested and quite fatal.

On all the theories covering this game, does anyone ever cover Molly's room has a chain on the window? The neglect/abuse may run even deeper than it seems
Amazing catch! This game is a masterpiece, I wouldn't be surprised if new stuff was discovered 10 years later
I don't think putting safety on a young child's second room window is bad, they were already plenty neglectful ignoring a hungry child.
(Rewritten because the text in my previous comment disappeared for some reason - in case anyone got a notification for it and was confused)
i remember molly saying that her dad told her to not climb out on the trees again, so i think it was more a safety thing than abusive :]!
I saw it immediately and was reminded of Harry potter’s window in one of the books
Just as a heads up for future episodes on this game: Some of these might need trigger warnings for the disturbing themes
The whole game needs them for child death, mental illness death, etc really
We actually need far more media dealing with death. people literally stopped living life out of fear of sickness and bringing death to someone by just being with them.
@BlackCroft666LP as much as i agree, because stuff like this (mental illness, child death/mistreatment, etc.) needs to stop being romanticized and shown in their true lighting, there still deserves to be a warning for people who've been through stuff like this and arent prepared to face it. games are a great way for people to communicate and develop understanding for harsh things like this (this dragon, cancer(?) is a good example of such things!), but games can also be a safe space and stuff like this can push people away rather than help, if not given the right warnings

i know they spent all of the molly section making jokes about it, but for some reason i cried during it. there’s a lot of parallels between those scenes and maladaptive daydreaming, a coping skill developed during childhood to escape traumatic stress. it seems a lot like the things with turning into animal was molly’s way of disguising a darker truth. when a child goes through periods of food being withheld, they often will eat large amounts to the point of making themselves sick, because their bodies go into survival mode and believe they need to prepare for the next time food will be taken away. it reminds me of extreme hunger molly describes. molly struggling with having unstable food sources and dealing with the sketchy things going on around her could have caused her to vividly imagine these things happening to the point where she really believed it in order to protect herself from the truth of it all.
He will cry lol either there or the ending
@@ginniegill1026 it is my theory but I do think those could be another reason
@@ginniegill1026 also the toothpaste
Maybe the chain is a meaning of abuse
They mention her having climbed out onto the tree in the past, so it's likely not about abuse or locking her up, but trying to keep her from hurting herself from falling out her window.
@@CodaBlairLucarioEmperor yeah I keep seeing people saying the chains on the window mean abuse… and I think considering we’re talking about a second story child’s window with no screen, I think that chain is pretty smart if you want to avoid your kid falling out.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the neglect/abuse theory itself is incorrect. Just that I think the window chain being used as “evidence” of it is a bit silly.
pretty sure it’s toothpaste, but that thought is horrifying
Another popular theory is that she fell out of the tree after climbing on it chasing the bird.
Well, that’s the theory, not 100% fact, though it’s likely that it gave her food poisoning leading to the hunger. Again nothing confirmed.
tho, the main character did say that they had a cat named molly and that molly would never get sick of the canned salmon
I was so confused who was talking since the character had a pretty similar voice to Ash. I always had to do a double-take 😭

After you have finished the game, I recommend watching Joseph Anderson's "The Villain of Edith Finch", it's a really good video

Very good
I absolutely love that video, I've rewatched it so many times. Everyone should give it a watch
the twins story is the most emotional for me, because of the way his brother is the one who wrote the story and thought of how he wanted his brother to be remembered, doing something he wanted to do, and keeping his mind set to it, even if it was tragic and horrific, his brother wanted to remember him in the best way.

I think the only "hidden" part is Sven's story. You can fully complete the game without ever seeing how he died or writing him in your journal.

You think it's ghosts but it was lesbians all along
Don't forget the second game made by the same crew as gone home, Tacoma which is more space themed but still has a relevant gameplay loop as these
Before your eyes is also a great game that not enough people played
When I watch gamers I always get mad when they don’t see the little details but watching Matpat I wish he would play the game lol, I’m just picky
OH….. MY…… GOD, I’m soo happy you are finally playing this game , wish Steph could join in but Ash is shaping up to a cool new banter buddie for you . We Stan Ash in this chat!
Matpat: Look, we're already starting to figure out the lore
Also Matpat: SOMEBODY DIED
I love how gobsmacked Matt and Ashe were. It's so hilarious how they're trying to comprehend what just happened.
Edith finch is such a nostalgic game for me for some reason, I used to replay it all the time when I was sick or on rainy nights. Matt and Ash’s comments were so fun to hear, it was really cool to see a different perspective on the game and hear their comments!!
"I'm still confused why the bathroom is Gregory's room" OH BOY
Matt... There is lore EVERYWHERE and you barely called any of it out! You can see the pictures of Barbara on set on the wall, you didn't walk onto the porch to see parts of the story... C'mon lore hunter!!
Also... PLEASE play through the beginning exploration after you finish the game - there's SO MUCH you miss because you don't realize it's important!
"she has lilies, maybe someone has died?"
oh mat.. just wait..
also sooo happy youre playing this. I got it as a PS4 free game, and I feel bad I didn't buy it it was so good
Matpat’s reaction to Molly turning into a Cat literally made my day😂😂
"Oh no this is so sad" said MatPat
Little did he know it would only get worse
I saw just the title of the video an yelled “I LOVE YOU” cause I was so excited cause I love this game so so much an seeing Matpat playing it an that means possible theories which I would love cause there’s only like five other videos about the plot an theories of Edith finch that I’ve watched them a couple times an the fact that matpat is doing one makes my day to the fullest degree that there would be very few things to ruin my day now thank you
I literally gasped when I saw the notification, I'm so glad you're finally playing this game! It deserves so much more attention for being the masterpiece that it is. I found out about it last year and it is by far my most favorite game of all time. I wish I'd known about it sooner
its a very beautiful game
@@emulyrose5353 It really is
Aren’t isn’t ain’t no secret
I found it close to release date and it still lingers in my head
I know everyone is real hype that he finally got to this game, but Matt doing the Tidus laugh and talking about Final Fantasy games absolutely 100% made my day
Same, and the laugh is purposefully awkward in the scene.
Final fantasy has been my favourite series growing up so anytime matpat talks about any of them is good times
If anyone can truly appreciate this game's narrative and mode of storytelling, it's gonna be Matt. I'm *very* excited to see his reaction to how this one progresses. It's a game that was made for people like him to really sink his teeth into.
5:57 “Aggressive non-following of the main storyline” is exactly how I play most games.
why do i feel like Ash is secretly a VA? she has such a recognizable voice
She should be, her voice is so calming but it can be so funny
This game has such an incredible story. I just watched a no-commentary play through for the first time the other day and cried at the ending. I was just thinking today about how I might want to rewatch it, and then I saw this video up! I’m excited to see what Matt thinks of it
"mollys fursonas are throwing me for a loop" im losing my mind ash i will love you forever
I really liked mat and ash’s banter throughout the ep. The game is so dark and sad that the jokes helped me get through it
ive been waiting for matpat to play this game for so long, its way of telling stories is so intriguing and amazing and i love that hes finally playing it!!
Omg not even a week ago i was like "imagine if game theorists would do smt on this game, it would be so cool" now im so happy :D
Sameee
The laughing at her turning into the cat is the exact reaction of everyone who plays the game for the first time😂
I'm glad Ash thinks that she sounds like Edith as well, because I've been thinking the same thing this entire time. Calling it out in the chapters, clever.
He was horrified by Molly.
I almost want to warn him about Gus. That one was the worst for me.
gus is so sad but the worst for me is gregory. and waltz of the flowers is my favourite nutcracker piece, thatwhole scene is so sad to me
what got me was lewis
@@pearl1331 TRUE! Something about them making you walk up and take the "crown" knowing what was going to happen really got to me
gus and gregory both cut deep, i imagine gregory will get a bigger reaction from mat as a father lol
You better finish this one I swear
Can I just say? I am so excited for part 2 of this play through!!
I found this game about two years ago and-It has been a HUGE comfort to me, especially during the dreaded year of 2020. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and I hope the mystery of the Finch Family draws you in, just as it did me!
There's debate about the connection between this and The Unfinished Swan (which is also an interesting game) with Milton's disappearance
Are they made by the same person?
Both were made by Giant Sparrow.
What debate? Milton's room gives it away if you've played both.
@@beladendron it's never been actually confirmed. Just speculated that The King is the missing Milton Finch from tiny coincidences in both games
@@ShiaraPhoenixfire I urge anyone to make a counter argument as to how he is not. There's more evidence supporting this than the Theory that Toby is the Scranton Strangler.
@@ShiaraPhoenixfire it has been confirmed, by the devs themselves
The jokes about Gregory's room hits different when you know why his room is a bathroom...doesn't seem like they noticed his age too
I feel bad about anyone having to play through Gregory's scenario, but especially someone with a young child.
his hurts the worst i had to put the game down just to cry for a bit afterwards.
They noticed his age. They bring up he was a baby. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a full playthrough just the Molly section, but if I had to guess it’s either a house remodeling after the infant died or someone drowned their baby.
It was the early morning and I sat there processing everything I saw, read, and experienced.
That was a few years ago. Love this channel, and I’m stoked to see you make your way through it as well finally. Revisiting it already has me flashing back.
Nothing better than a well-told story.
