Bill, thanks for the video. On Saturday I installed my steering gearbox and cut steering column using your instructions and it is perfect. I removed the old steering gear with no problem. I had to remove the exhaust pipe though to get the new slightly big gear box in. My new power steering pump and finishing up the rest of the install is next. Thanks again.
@@josebecerra6131 Jose I use my OEM pump since my car was power steering equipped. I do have the Saginaw pump for sale on eBay since it only works for manual steering upgrade. I used the STP type F automatic transmission fluid for pre-1981 fords not requiring mercon. Manual trans car will use manual trans fluid for the power steering.
It has not been as simple as they would have you believe. I had to switch out the reservoir/pump to one that had been originally used on Camaro's. The low pressure side connector off the reservoir was hitting the head. The one for the Camaro has a bend in it so the nipple on the reservoir points to the front of the car. March Performance can help with the correct pump/reservoir if the kit you buy is incorrect. I had to use the modified Z bar as my Mach 1 is a four speed car. That has really been the only issue in my install. Well worth the trouble.
I'm in the process of converting my 1970 Mach 1 equipped with the M code Cleveland to Borgeson power steering. I located the pump/reservoir bracket from Summit and the modified Z-bar from Opentracker Racing. Not sure why no one offers a complete kit for the Cleveland engines, so lets hope this goes well and does not mean returning a lot of parts. It would be nice if you had a video on this conversion as well.
Curious why the steering shaft is not indexed along with the joint where it fits into the gear box and a corresponding dot on the top to align the steering wheel for centering. Can you address this earlier post "Bill you didn't mention the fact the the steering tube will not go though the firewall plate without slotting it, the original firewall plate is quit a bit larger." Thanks for your video.
Typically when I replace a steering gear box, I center the box first, install the pitman arm to make sure it is dead center and install the steering wheel centered. This way I dont have to worry about counting the turns on the wheel and damaging the turn signal cancel switch, would that work on this kit?
Bought the entire Borgeson kit, was told the Borgeson Z bar would clear the Tri Y headers I also got from CJ. It does not! Solution= dimple (hammer) the ceramic coated pipe. Also HYD line was to short. Not happy in FL
Most likely a stupid question, I'm not very knowledgeable yet when it comes to cars, but is it possible to install power steering in a car that doesn't already have it? If it is possible, is it simple enough to be worth it?
This kit is also available on our website as a power steering conversion. Same install except you add a power steering pump and brackets, you won't have to change the center link.
dang , on the pony is way more work than the 65 galaxie . unfortunately I have to swap mine out. did you flush the entire system during the install ? thx!
What do you do if someone worked on the car previously, installed the new shaft so now there’s a huge space between the wheel and the column which is why my blinkers don’t turn off, and you no longer have the original shaft for a baseline measurement to do your new cut? Thanks
Very helpful video. Can you tell me if the installation calls for centering the steering box /shaft as called for by the factory manual? Factory manual calls for measuring worm bearing preload check using an inch-lb torque wrench with the steering wheel off center. The adjustment according to the book calls for tightening or loosening the adjuster lock nut on the box and adjusting also turning the sector shaft screw in order to center the shaft in the tube. Does the Borgeson unit require similar adjustments for centering the box and or shaft? Thanks Tony
Yes, you will need to center the pitman shaft., other wise it will steer more one direction then the other. Your pit man arm will only be able to be installed on the shaft in one position so it is important to have the box centered. Split lock to lock. No need to measure bearing preload.
Bill you didn't mention the fact the the steering tube will not go though the firewall plate without sloting it, the original firewall plate is quit a bit larger.
First you need to learn to wear surgical gloves when you work on a car....Second of all Bottom of the car SHOULD be cleaned with steam....It's a MUST then you can work on the car any way you desire. You're welcome.
Are you kidding? Lol some people...folks been working on cars without gloves since they were invented not to mention other less than ideal conditions. Shut up

Saginaw pump or oem pump? And what type of fluid did you use.. mine is with oem pump but not sure of the fluid type to use.

Your frame is bent or engine misaligned
I've waited for this video for years! Awesome guys
That plastic purple watch is sooooo boss. Congrats, you rock!

Christopher Lynn How has that worked out? I have a '67 with a 351C and am trying the same thing right now.
nice one but I like the ability to turn the wheel with just one finger

Thanks for making this.
It's impossible to see sometimes (arm in the way, etc), like the end of steering tube under the hood.
I posted a couple responses. Good luck, well worth it. Chris

Would you recommend this setup for 65 inline 6cyl?

Borgenson steering is full power steering unlike the bendix ford system is power assist.
This car looks so good on top, so horrible underneath and inside the engine bay!!
It needs some love for sure but will make a good car someday.
CJ Pony Parts definitely, and it really makes me appreciate the restoration job my mechanic did!
I separated my steering box from the shaft instead of cutting in case someone wants an original that functions just fine
how did you do it can you share with me , thank you
Hi Bill, thank you for the video. Would you please recommend to me a conversion power steering unit for my 1966 Mustang without power steering?
We offer a Borgeson manual to power steering conversion on our website.
If you choose to use the Borgeson universal joint to replace the rag joint, is that part of the installation any different regarding measurements etc?
Did you got any info on that? .
@@solid4condor Nah. Probably best to email CJ directly.
What is the total measurement you cut off?
I have an early 65 p/s V8 that has a factory Eaton p/s pump. Reservoir is over pump
Will the Eaton work or will I need the pump kit?
Any shop in Chicago that could install this on a 65 fastback with manual steering?
does it works on a 64,5 mustang with no factory power steering ?
Yes, you use the non-power steering cars center links and tie rods also
.
Can you suggest any shops in Los Angeles that can do my Borgeson Power Steering upgrade?
Mustangs and Fast Fords in OC.
Can this be used on a 6 cylinder?
This kit can be used with your 6 cylinder www.cjponyparts.com/borgeson-power-steering-conversion-kit-200-250-1965-1966/p/PSK10/
Nice install. I'm hesitant to cut up the column, but the stock system is soooo bad....
Easy peasy.. it is a cary but measure 200 times and cut a little off at a time. Not a one and done job.

Did you make it bigger? I’m having the same issue with my 66. It’s not lined up properly.
Will there be any fitment issues with the kit if I'm running headers
Borgeson recommends an original style Tri-Y header, other headers may cause clearance issues.
Is this the same for a 68?
My steering box seems worn
Yes we offer a kit for the 68 as well.
I have an 04 mustang V6. I've searched for countless hours trying to find a way to do this on mine. Can anyone please tell me how!?
Your car has power steering and tilt not sure what your trying to do...
What’s the name of the song
excelente ......
Shame. With all the hot cars out there, you have to grunt one with a 1/2" of crud covering everything...
Jeeze clean the stuff before you start..
Everything looks right on except individual NOT wearing safety glasses to prevent anything from getting into one's eyes. THINK SAFETY!!!
Seriously? Lol some people
get ride of the trash music, its not needed.
Can you talk any faster damn slow down so we have the chance to absorb what we can hear.

I agree about the gloves. I disagree about the cleaning. The rust-preventative properties of a nice oily chassis are well worth it.
also safety glasses before everything else
no gloves i get it ! but clean that greasy sumbitch
