    I like how both Hasan and Kurgusast are making the same argument about climate change and are even making the same exact points. Both mention the BP ad campaign to shift claim and both mention that I’d you can see this video now your a part of the problem. Yet Husan hates kurgasat just because he decided to hate them and they dared to say there was a democratic solution. It's like he's just given up on the subject as he apparently is also anti violent revolution and thus has no ideas at all on how to tackle the problem.

      The argument is free markets. I think we all agree that the government is keeping these industries alive so a free market would basically put these polluting industries at risk. Look at Tesla and how successful its been. Legacy car manufacturers lobbied the government to limit the development of electric cars, but the market demanded them so the industry is shifting toward electric. Had the government refused to be influenced by car manufactures/oil companies and let the market do its job, we may have developed EV's much quicker. As a German who just voted in yesterday's elections, trust me, our system is shit too and does not produce better results in this regard in the slightest. The Green party is a joke, they are neoliberal, pro-corporate hacks who do nothing but virtue signal but never address the real systemic issue behind climate change which is capitalism and the profit motive. Instead they do stupid counterproductive shit like get Germany to ban nuclear energy which is our single best hope of mitigating CO2 emissions in the short term. Germany decided to shut down its nuclear power plants and instead rely even more on coal. We are actively making this problem worse. The Greens, the Conservatives, the Social Democrats and the Liberals are all virtually indistinguishable in Germany, they are the four largest parties and they are all just various flavors of socdem market liberal. Between them they got 75% of the total vote and another 10% went to the far right AfD, a xenophobic party full of neonazis and bigots.
      Only 5% went to the Left party, which isn't even revolutionary or communist, it's just the only one critical of capitalism and imperialism in any way, and even they are just moderate reformists who constantly compromise and have to dilute their platform to not get completely ostracized, which they still do a lot of the time since two of the four major parties flat out refuse to work with them and the other two are extremely wary of being seen as friendly to the Left.
      Any party that gets less than 5% does not get into the Parliament.
      Long story short Germany is pretty much fucking hopeless. The mindset of the people here sucks, they are extremely conservative (in the sense that they just want to keep the liberal soc dem status quo) and centrist, they are totally indoctrinated into capitalist realism, they benefit from welfare systems that are funded by profits gained from imperialism in the global south (and even imperialism inside the EU against poorer countries who get fucked by the rich ones).
      Also our media sucks and they constantly propagandize against the Left, and also our unions suck and are completely defanged, constantly work together with bosses instead of against them, and they are heavily restricted by the government and can only strike in pre-approved ways for pre-approved things.

    I guess I still liked the vid bc it does counter the more neoliberal narrative of significant climate action through individual consumption behaviour and personal responsibility which seems rather prevalent in the public discourse. There is a lot of pertinent information regarding the reality of modern global industry and political economy (or at least it is being hinted at) which should serve as somewhat of a discourse changer.
    That being said I guess where the vid hits its limits are the methods of action endorsed by liberal democracy more generally: Voting (with an emphasis on representative over direct) and maybe your occasional peaceful protest. Nothing on methods based on labour power (striking, slacking, etc.) has likely even been considered, and even it has, they likely would have had to keep it out for legal reasons alone given that "political strikes" are already criminalized in many countries (like my home country Germany for example). Makes you think.
    And then the Gates sponsorship at the end. Only fair to have that leave a bad taste in your mouth. There is no reason to think that these things happen without a demand for narrative influence on some level. Although in all likelihood it is not as blatant as direct dictating and censorship of content, moreso a general narrative framework with subliminal limits backed up by a complete discretion to give or withdraw funding.
    And even if it was all just downstream from Gates' self-written script, the whole vid should not be disregarded as complete counter-propaganda bc of that. To the contrary, most of what is being said is refreshingly accurate and salient in spite of the sponsorship. It is moreso about what is _not_ being said.

      @vantahawk2834 2 года назад +6

      @@Vesta_the_Lesser I am talking about strikes, not just protests. Ofc those are fairly unrestricted.
      So "political" strikes in this case mean strikes that are explicitly targeting anything _besides_ employment contract negotiations that have been officially declared and are backed up by state-recognized unions.
      So for example that already excludes wildcat strikes even if they are not "political" in this very narrow sense.
      And beyond that it excludes strike efforts for any other issue, be it regarding climate policy, civil rights, foreign policy, what have you.
      On top of that German civil society is divided into three legally-binding castes based on profession. The highest of these, called "Beamte", are prohibited from _all_ strike action in their workplaces, full stop. These include many public officials and well-respected professions deemed essential (physicians, professors, many teachers, etc. and pretty much anyone working in the public sector who makes an upper middleclass income).
      For all the progress Germany is lauded with regarding labour issues, it has an incredibly repressive strike law in international comparison.
      Part of the reason for this is some juridical precedent from the Nazi era. Pretty sus, right?
      Germany has completely sterilized its pathways for labour action. It is certainly well possible, but only within the narrow limits pre-approved by the government.

    ind another person. Individually add up how much it costs to sustain you and/or your lifestyle and combine what’s left over with them and have them do the same. Each taking turns in spending every other payday.
    Your jobs will provide the income and the combined surplus will make it easier to pursue hobbies or climb the societal ladder. Including more and more people will add to the over all supply that each person in the network will have access to, thereby compounding the process.
    For added security (insurance) have each person in the network find others to rely on. With that you’ll have overlapping security.
    Supplant anything of value to you personally for the “income” portion and as long as you’re covering for yourself first and foremost, all goods (including for luxury) will get distributed across a wider system in accordance to how you relate to other people. Use cost cutting measures to increase any holdings and share information.
    With that added insurance, use any and all surplus to invest in people most capable of bringing about change, including local chapters and environmental projects. Tell them about this process and aid them in building up a web of support and you can scale up any system, company or self-governance.

    I mean, the video isn't wrong. If we just voted we could solve it. But in the US, 50% of the population simply doesn't vote. On top of that we have half the people that do vote, voting for a fascist party who can't see past their own nose in regards to long-term issues. Really its just a matter of education and counter-propaganda. If people voted for the better choice, Republicans would be extinct. If there was only a Democratic party, you'd see it splinter into the more Progressive wing and the Corporate Dems. But if we were at that point were the voting population was educated and cared enough to recognize that those politicians are compromised between doing what the people want versus what corporations want, we'd have solved this issue decades ago.
    In short, the only way voting will solve this is a massive public education tour to inform people about politics and radicalize the non-voters into action. There is really no other way. No protest, forceful or violent action will stop climate change. Disagree all you want with the ending, but this video is a step in the right direction regardless.

    • @Rowdy422
      @Rowdy422 2 года назад +2

      Furthermore, I think its actually quite effective from an advocacy standpoint to bring up these issues without delving super deep into the existing politics behind them. How effective would this video be at convincing certain people if the last third was just promoting Democrats and shitting on Republicans? Not explicitly because Dems are so cool and good and awesome, but because they're the party that even at least even pays lip service to the issues at hand. Sure it would get to the ultimate point, but with tribalism how it is now, I'm pretty sure most Republicans would just instantly switch off and become combative.
      But when you leave it open-ended like this, it can help people explore topics that they normally wouldn't otherwise. They might sit down and actually look one or two things up on their own, maybe engage in something amounting to scientific curiosity, and from there they can finally look into political advocacy. THAT is when they slowly come to the realization that the Republican party is essentially doing everything they can to expedite climate change, almost to the point of being intentional by now. That sort of self discovery is immensely de-radicalizing, because people feel like they achieved it on their own without someone holding their hand or worse, trying to shove their face into the evidence.

    The individual responsibility route actually leads to people mounting pressure on those that pull the levers so... Maybe we should be more nuanced about how we approach this.
    Also 3:12 I'd be careful here my dude. Don't act like there aren't massive distinctions between you and I. You are the part of the rich, people like me just happen to live around people like you. People like me are homeless and have our skin color working against us, the fact that I can watch you on an Obama phone or a cheap chromebook doesn't put me in the same category as you. I am part of the working class homeless, I can afford a laptop by saving over 6 months and I still have to hurt myself to accomplish this but I don't make enough to pay rent inside of a month, I can't even afford to maintain a fucking car and am at risk of having all my shit stolen if I catch the eye of the wrong people and they realize I have no where safe to put what little I have.
    Don't be a troglodyte my dude, I am not part of the rich just because I sleep on the pavement of a rich nation. What a fucking insult.
    Now, all that said. I'm actually a huge fan of yours and I hope you learn to take criticism a little better.

      @@mariaj1702 On the flip side, the "eat less meat" marketing also gives factory farming-based corporations license to continue doing what they've done for decades, because it's an ambiguous slogan that doesn't really exert much pressure in a concrete way. Considering that the average American eats meat at almost every meal, eating less meat for that person could simply mean eating 14 meals with meat per week instead of 21, but the former scenario would still be excessive, harmful, and unsustainable.
