Yeah. . . When you think about it the Shrek franchise is messed up. Such as Fiona being locked up in a tower for most of her life. Shrek 4ever After touched up on this on the turmoil and effects being locked up all her life took in Fiona, both physically and mentally.

Any english teacher with half a brain would know that, even if "they" was NOT an acceptable pronoun to use for a single person, that would mean there is no single pronoun used to refer to a person whose gender is unknown, which is stupid and therefore a word should be made to use for that purpose, and "they" is the best pre-existing candidate because it is already used to refer to an unknown number of people - an unknown number meaning it could already be referring to a single person, even without the speaker's knowledge.
so I'm not the only one who makes those jokes when "him/her" &c. come up!

Being able to think in a language is a good rule of thumb for when you are fluent, I started learning Luxembourgish, German and French in 1st (Lux and De) and 3rd (Fr) grade
Luxembourgish I was fluent in around 4th grade as it was a daily use, German almost fluent by 10th and fully fluent now that I'm in University in a German speaking language and nowhere near fluent in French and will typically translate from the last language I was talking (which means my French is worst right after I teach my class in German)
I learned English from my mom and tv shows and it became my main language even tho where I live Spanish is supposed to be the main language. Now I have trouble talking Spanish, I can understand what everyone's talking about it just takes me a bit to process and think about how I'm supposed to reply but it just feels really weird and wrong speaking in spanish. It hasn't really affected my grades but socializing with others is just awkward.

I got thrown into a French speaking country after a month of learning French everyday. Despite not using it regularly for two years I still flip to "French mode" on occasion.
I mean, it's not just that. This is only true if you're bad at the language (in which case I have some bad news for whoever was quoted here). You have to stop doing it if you want to progress to any fluency - in other words, you need to actually use the language as a language, not as some funky code overlaid on top of your original one. Besides, there's concepts in languages that just don't translate at all. How would it even be possible for foreigners to use them if this were the case?

6:50 What my family does is put the stickers on those thin magnets you get sometimes so they can be moved freely. (the schools I went to growing up allowed us to decorate our lockers, but they had to be clean before you could participate in Field Day* at the end of the year. So while a lot of the other kids were having to use soap and scrapers to remove the sticker residue, we'd just remove the magnet stickers and be done.)

Maybe it's just me but after learning French, I often think and read in French without switching back to English. Sometimes I even forget how to say something in English. :P

2:07 This is why it is more difficult to learn a second language. Because you really aren't supposed to do that - it only makes things more difficult in the long run. Of course, we all do this to some extent in the beginning of learning a new language, but the goal is to STOP doing that as soon as possible.
