Man, you will love it. I caught all those fish within about 20 paces of where I started. That area behind the rock dam was the flatest, clearest section on the river and it felt like a spring creek, so I went way down on tippet size. I probably went to low and would have been better off with a longer leader, and 6x on a 3wt line. My buddy Dave was 50 yards upstream and using 6x. He hooked 20 fish and landed 18. In the afternoon the rise slowed down and I switched to streamers and 2x tippet. I hooked some huge fish and still broke some off. But that's the best chance for giants. Don't forget to try streamers. Good luck! I would love to see a report! I looked at your channel. Wow, you show some beautiful scenery.
That net sucks man. You really cleaned house though, got some nice fish. That’s one hell of a day. Youre kinda brutal with the fish though to be honest. Like netting the fish then not keeping it in the water shows total disregard for the well being of the fish. Omg man, the moss fish?? Dude think about what you’re actually doing when you catch a fish and you keep its head out of the water for the next 15 seconds.
Yep, I agree with the way those fish were handled, it's a good possibility they all died. I do catch and release using barbless hooks. I fished that same hole on the Owhyee and the fish never comes out of the water. There are a lot of fishermen out there but far fewer Sportsman,
In the morning I started with 7x! But my buddy schooled me with 6x becuase I had to be very careful and then change tippets with almost every fish. It took longer to bring fish in and to be ready to cast at the next fish. So he presented to a lot more fish than I did. I chose to fish one of the clearest, most glass like sections of the river. Right behind a rock weir. That's my excuse and I am sticking to it! Anyway, 6x is still probably light. Especially for a hopper. I might be at 2 or 3x to the hopper with a 5x dropper. But conditions the day you fish will dictate the choice. Get em! I would love to hear how you do.
@@skorflyfishing I will let you know for sure! This coming week the plan is to hike olympic NP with friends. The following week I will be solo and heading thru central oregon/eastern oregon. Plan to stop by possibly Fall River, maybe Metolius, Lower Deschutes (where ever the canyon area is), then the owyhee river (I may just head here first as I am so excited). But I will let you know if I'm lucky enough to catch any of these beauties!!
I'm planning on heading out to this river 2nd half of the1st week of August . I plan to use terrestrial dry dropper rigs with some type of nymph. I've heard the 5 mile stretch below the owyhee dam/reservoir is best spots for big browns. Does this mean to the north of the reservoir or to the south? I'm assuming it means south just was unsure!
Carl, it means below the dam which is actually North of the reservoir when looking at a map. This is a tailwater fishery meaning that the outflow from the dam keeps the water cold enough for large trout to thrive. The Upper Owyhee is much warmer and supports bass. Good luck! There is nothing like a big brown smashing a hopper!
@@skorflyfishing this week I caught 2 rainbows at Todd Lake and caught a nice 2 pounder middle fork williamette, also today at Crater Lake landed a nice rainbow on pheasant tailed nymph. I will head towards Deschutes canyon area and owyhee river this coming week and I'll let you know how that goes! For now the plan is for my friends and I to rest this weekend, maybe do some fly fishing early at quartzville creek Monday. We shall see. Hope you're doing well man!
Cmon man, be better with your handling. Keep them wet and in your net, no need to slap em on a table.
You are soooo right! I have an excuse, but you are still right on.
Awesome! Headed to the Owyhee next week for my first time, can't wait to explore it!

Good advice. 👍

I've got 4x and 5x tapered leaders and tippet..one 6x ring of tippet as well. I may want to use 6x for spots like this !!
