  • So this is Day 2 on New Zealand's best Trophy Trout river. possibly even best in the world. While comparatively, it was slow compared to Day 1 Opening Day, Me and my Buddy Lance had an absolute Blast Chasing these mega-sized Trophy Rainbow trout from tricky pocket water.

    Every fish you catch in NZ is a trophy fish in the PNW for me. Hopefully some day I will be able to make the trip to your side of the world. Keep the content coming brother. Love it!

    that pole near your car when you got the brown we named it brown pole. every drift resulted in a hookup as they were sitting just on the backside of that skinny section of rocks.

    40 odd years ago I used to fish rough places like this, after 3 days I was spent. Used to call it full contact trout fishing. Fun times.

    Any idea why the fish are so big there, do they just enter the rivers to spawn as they must pack down a hell of a lot to get to those sizes, scary where a fish in teens is small

    Apparently the conditions in New Zealand are perfect for the trout to grow big, oxygen levels, good food, clean water, conservation programmes, water temperatures, climate temperatures, all combine for great environment for the trout. I probably cannot explain it more that that, that is as biologically scientific as I can get.

      I'm pretty sure these big rainbows live most of the time in a lake where they grow big, and these guys are catching them during their spawning run into the river - the fish look like spawners, based on coloration and the big kypes on the males.

      It seems this was the Tekapo hydro canals - there are some Salmon farms, so wild & escaped salmon & trout get huge on food that drifts out. So yeah, not so much to do with the natural environment in this case.

    Appreciated your video of the various flies; many of which i use here in Colorado (USA)...Adams parachute, Pheasant tail, Royal wulff, Copper John, and Hares ear. I'm heading to your beautiful NZ for the month of November. I was curious if 5/6 wr rod would be suffice but thinking from what I'm seeing (Large Rainbows) I better bring my 8wt?

      Not they are only in there for a very short time while the season on them is open anyway.

      @@fishinthenorth Lakes and Rivers, these fish are land locked as there are multiple dams between here and the ocean. There is a fishfarm not too far away I suspect has a bit to do with the mammoth size of the fish

    The biggest trout I have caught was a 20 inch brown which is big for our small streams in the USA specifically VA if I ever caught a trout that big my heart would probably stop. What size leaders do you use for Jurassic Park sized fish?

    Gday Gareth, Recently subscribed & Just watched this vid after purchasing my 1st fishing license in close to 20 years due to other sports, hunting & raising 3 kids. Im looking forward to casting the fly again in the sth cant region & explore the high country waters ive never fished.
    Which brings me to a couple of questions:
    In this river what weight rod and what lb leader & tippet do you use to catch these monster tanks of trout?
