- So this is Day 2 on New Zealand's best Trophy Trout river. possibly even best in the world. While comparatively, it was slow compared to Day 1 Opening Day, Me and my Buddy Lance had an absolute Blast Chasing these mega-sized Trophy Rainbow trout from tricky pocket water.
Hope you enjoy it.

Every fish you catch in NZ is a trophy fish in the PNW for me. Hopefully some day I will be able to make the trip to your side of the world. Keep the content coming brother. Love it!
great fishing and just really enjoy when you bring out the drone.
Cheers mate I appreciate it 🤙
Keep the great content coming. One of the best fishing channels on here!
Hi Gareth, great drone shots that really show the potential of this great river. Cheers mate. Harera
that pole near your car when you got the brown we named it brown pole. every drift resulted in a hookup as they were sitting just on the backside of that skinny section of rocks.
Great video again Gareth - fantastic
Great vid and fishing Gareth! :)
Cheers mate I appreciate that 🤙
gorgeous fish
AWESOME !!! THANKS 🎣🎣🎣
Cheers
Awsome buddy!!!!👍😁
HUGE FISH! I’m mKing the trip from Seattle in Feb., what size rods should I bring? 5 and 8wt?
Best fly fishing and trout content on youtube good sir 👍
Thanks you kind sir.🤙
Nice one Gareth! Wondering if you could post your thoughts on the 7X 5wt and 6wt?
Love the video bro. I'm a guide in the US. Ever come over I'll take you out. Curious, what fly do you call "natural" that you switched to. Would love to know some o your secrets and I'll share mine also. Tight lines my man, great fins!!!!🔥
SICK dude
your editing and shots are so sick! Love watching and learning not only from your fishing technique but also filming! Great stuff
Thanks heaps bro. 🤙
40 odd years ago I used to fish rough places like this, after 3 days I was spent. Used to call it full contact trout fishing. Fun times.
Is the 10 in 4k? Great video as always
How big was Buddy' fish, looked huge?
Idk like 15-20lb ?
Seriously - what the heck are those fish eating daily to reach those proportions?? WOW
Based on my limited fly fishing experience in the US, that looks like Fly Fishing on a Neighboring Planet.
Yeah it’s definitely a different world
Which neighboring planet is there an availability to catch trout on? Mars?
Any idea why the fish are so big there, do they just enter the rivers to spawn as they must pack down a hell of a lot to get to those sizes, scary where a fish in teens is small
Hi Trout Hunting NZ, can tourist do trout fishing in NZ?
Where are you located by the way?
What gopro chest mount is that?
What's your gear of choice mate?
Been following for quite awhile…multiple accounts as I tend to have to make a new one with each phone I go through. Love the videos love the areas you’re able to fish hopefully I can make it there sometime throughout my life
Thanks heaps mate. Hope you make it some day
I will ask my question again - are these lake fish coming up a river for spawning? North or South Island?
I was thinking the same thing.
Catch n cook
Whats the deal with Okuma?
You sure those aren't small submarines?
What’s the rivers name?
I’ll never tell.
@@TroutHuntingNZ Promise?
@@TroutHuntingNZ worth a shot 😂
@@TroutHuntingNZ keep up the awesome fishing though mate, quite a inspiration and a thrive to get out there!
Its the same as the last one, opening day, I think anyway, and I know which one it is
Great vids but man! That music is the worst elevator music ever, I feel like I’m on the end of the phone during a 47:57 hr ‘we’ll be with as soon as the next available…….’
Apparently the conditions in New Zealand are perfect for the trout to grow big, oxygen levels, good food, clean water, conservation programmes, water temperatures, climate temperatures, all combine for great environment for the trout. I probably cannot explain it more that that, that is as biologically scientific as I can get.
Yeah you pretty much nailed it
I'm pretty sure these big rainbows live most of the time in a lake where they grow big, and these guys are catching them during their spawning run into the river - the fish look like spawners, based on coloration and the big kypes on the males.
It seems this was the Tekapo hydro canals - there are some Salmon farms, so wild & escaped salmon & trout get huge on food that drifts out. So yeah, not so much to do with the natural environment in this case.
How the fukc these fish get so BIG???

Hope this comment helped you earn a bit more money! 😂
Why do some of their mouths stay open?
That would be a silent scream.
@@ALLROY240 no actually it’s there natural instructed to search for oxygen and this happens even when fish jumps
Great videos man. Love watching them. As a fisherman, this kind of content makes my heart beat a but faster. Keep going! 👍🏻
Appreciated your video of the various flies; many of which i use here in Colorado (USA)...Adams parachute, Pheasant tail, Royal wulff, Copper John, and Hares ear. I'm heading to your beautiful NZ for the month of November. I was curious if 5/6 wr rod would be suffice but thinking from what I'm seeing (Large Rainbows) I better bring my 8wt?
Nice drone shots and nice edit. Very enjoyable watch. Hard to get over the size of those fish.
Cheers bro
I FINALLY caught me first trout on a fly. Was only like 2lb at silverstream but man it was a rush 😀
2lb is nice size!!! Be proud of yourself, flyfishing is REALLY hard
@@Sceptnado Just got into flyfishing and I can’t sweat it enough. It’s really hard. But im getting there 😃
Just looking at that water makes me salivate! Note to self.. New Zealand-bucket list-fishing, cheers mate.
I really enjoy your videos! NZ has always been a destination for me and was planning in 2020 then Covid hit. Once this is over, I can't wait to visit your waters. Until then, keep up the great work!
Cheers mate hope you get here soon
Superb clip and music too, keep it up! Greetings from Ireland
Thanks heaps mate
Love the drone footage of the hooked rainbow 🌈........

Quality as always mate......have put my trip over on hold for 12 more months......so this will keep wetting my appetite. Keep rubbing our noses in it !!
The beauty of new Zealand made feel like in lord of ring...
Thanks
your videos are beautiful. thank you for sharing your adventures
You never fail to amaze me.. I swear if there's a big trout Ina river, you've done battle with it. Bravo on another great vid.
Great stuff, especially liked the drone shots 👍
Thanks.
Great vid bro. Nice fesh!!!!
Thanks mate
Mate, I know where this is but will not share your secret. I live overseas but will be visiting this place on my next visit home. I used to know Lances' Dad, Rik, and knew Lance as a really wee fella. Good vids, keep it up..chur
It's a very well known location, there are numerous articles about it.
What river in new Zealand doesnt have giant trout..
absolute dream of mine to catch a trout that big
Beautiful monsters!
Thank you sir
Another great video. Do these fish stay in the river system or do they come from the salt?
Not they are only in there for a very short time while the season on them is open anyway.
@@TroutHuntingNZ So they come from the ocean like we call steelhead in North America or they come from lakes there?
@@TroutHuntingNZ Would be really interesting to hear more about these rivers and the reasons behind the fish growth, where they come and go, season rules etc. Great channel. Cheers PP
@@fishinthenorth Lakes and Rivers, these fish are land locked as there are multiple dams between here and the ocean. There is a fishfarm not too far away I suspect has a bit to do with the mammoth size of the fish
Awesome. That water looked great
Great Drone footage.
Awesome trout fishing they were so beautiful and I just loved the scenery I recently did a trout fishing video it is so peaceful especially since I have been distracted with school love that bait that you use I have the exact same one my favourite is the lucky strike spinners thought anyway have a happy Halloween!
Where is this
What river
Chur bro, tidy work
Thanks mate
Great video. What size hooks you use?
I see me in my undies didn’t make the cut 😂😂😂😂
Bro it was in for a while I really wanted to.
@@TroutHuntingNZ 😂😂😂😂😂
Quenial what camera did you use to record ?
The biggest trout I have caught was a 20 inch brown which is big for our small streams in the USA specifically VA if I ever caught a trout that big my heart would probably stop. What size leaders do you use for Jurassic Park sized fish?
Love u
Love u too
first 🇺🇸🔥
Yes sir🤙
How long are you in Tekapo? I have the car keys at the ready if you still there this weekend… if you ever want to make a video of what not to do…. Give me a yell!
Are those steelhead? migratory?....They have to be.....
What lb tippet are you running for these monsters?
Awesome video!! Hope you get your new go pro buds!!
What weight rods are you using? Love the vids!
🐟🎣👍👍👍✌
They look like steelhead
gaint fish
but where do you go after this...:-)
The Twizel Tavern is always worth a visit.
Almost as epic as middle Tennessee tailwaters…. Awesome stuff man!
Should I come there ? Big fish ?
@@TroutHuntingNZ you should come to East Tennessee and fish for browns, I wish there was some way to send you pics I have caught several over 30” this year
Gday Gareth, Recently subscribed & Just watched this vid after purchasing my 1st fishing license in close to 20 years due to other sports, hunting & raising 3 kids. Im looking forward to casting the fly again in the sth cant region & explore the high country waters ive never fished.
Which brings me to a couple of questions:
In this river what weight rod and what lb leader & tippet do you use to catch these monster tanks of trout?
Cheers, Pete
Hi mate 6wt rod and 6-10lb line
If you don't net it yourself it doesn't count !!!!
