  • My first horror movie review, not counting Myra Breckenridge. E. Elias Merhige holds it down with a true fright-fest, Begotten.

it was truly the longest 50 minutes ever committed to film, and uh...yeah much more fun to talk about than to actually sit and watch, if I were to put it on now I probably couldn't get past a few minutes...and yet I can't help but feel it was badass

That is way cool man, I figured it was a stop and start sort of production since it's very independent and the setting doesn't have a specific time or place. Thanks so much for giving me a little more background info. P.S. at the time I'm writing this, the review has a total of 666 views...so rad

Me, I love movies. Love them. But when I watch something like Begotten it almost seems like Merhige back then was what we would consider a "troll" now. My 2 cents.
Again, love your style in reviews.

I like your style, Brian. I watched Begotten for the first time months ago, disliked it, went back to it, and disliked it all over again. These aren't my kind of movies and I can understand why people MIGHT like them, but I can also understand why somebody would say they liked it even if they didn't even watch it or understand it. It's a highly overused excuse saying you like experimental films when you don't even get it... even when in most cases there is nothing to get.
    That's Begotten.

I liked it, regardless of the fact that I don't care what it means symbolically.

Some of the film was shot in Tenafly N.J. near the Palisades Pkwy. It was made over the course of a few years. It would start then stop the pick up again some time later. Kind of crazy production. I was hired in1985 to do the EFX I was with the production for over a year. (6 months past my obligation) i wanted to see it done. But then it shut down and i had to move on. Hollywood was calling. lol

This movie is as pretentious as it gets!! Don't watch it unless you love shockfests that are boring as piss and make no sense.....

Didn't care for this one. I could barely see it & without end credits & online synopsis, I would have had no clue what the hell was going on! I understand that symbolism can have a greater effect at times vs open message but geez! It was too long & trying to hard to be edgy in my opinion. The only thing I could really think about through the entire film was production, wondering what the actors were thinking and the hell do you prepare for that and why is that woman's crotch so damn hairy!
