  • Hey, it's that movie I saw two scenes out-of-context in The Beatles Anthology for so many years and still doesn't make much sense after watching the movie twice - it's How I Won The War!

It's nice to know I came out of seeing the film and ended up on the same page as someone else.
Incidentally,, the German Officer in all the scenes with Michael Crawford plays Irwin Rrommel in "Patton" (1970), one of the best war movies of all time.

I loved the book, I don't know how they thought to try and make it into a film.

I guess themes of capitalism, jingoism and hypocrisy never go out of style. Richard Lester sure was on a tear of bleak and cynical movies around this time.

A good anti-war movie and a parody of the deluge of war movies from the 1950's and 1960's. Look you should know that many of the actors, producers and directors had their part in WW2. People had to film the trauma, which is why so much was produced in that area at that time.

It's kind of staggering how many of those pre-Python comedians all served in WWII and carried that trauma with them for the rest of their lives. A parody of war movies is certainly in the mix, but there's just so much going on and it's so meta and self-aware that its hard to even describe. Is it comedy, parody, legitimately depressing war drama...
