I've always valued how the Monogatari series highlights the perspectives of adolescence compared to adulthood and how teenagers grow through life. Every non-adult character sees their world through fairly black and white lenses, while the perspectives we get from Kaiki and Oshino are nuanced, grey, and not always correct but broadly consistent, the way most adults live. Kaiki and Oshino both live consistently with their own values (Kaiki toward skepticism, egoism, and perspectivism and Oshino toward harmony, self-determination, and respect), but aren't so rigid to them. Kaiki's involvement in the story highlights this best, as he's seen by Araragi and Senjougahara as a petty fake villain, when he's truly just a middle-aged shabby (tsundere) conman. He genuinely tried to help Senjougahara by (though this is more implied) bringing the crab diety to her to help a young girl endure a terrible life. This ends up being a blunder on his part, but he then succeeds when he helps Sengoku move on from the life she's imposed on herself. He didn't really change across the series so much as we just saw more of who he really was. However, we see all the adolescent characters gradually change and mature in how they view the world as they have more experiences, yet they always maintain that teenage stubborn self-righteousness. It's so realistic to how teenagers actually think and develop mentally, where most anime or young adult series fail to, either by making teenagers think and act like irrational adults, or portraying them like overemotional simplistic caricatures. Also SHAFT is based in general, making a HEAVILY dialogue-driven series constantly look gorgeous and keep your attention.

I would say "You do not know how hard it is to explain or onboard other people to this anime" but you know exactly that pain my brother. Thank you for this focused explanation i can only hope more give this series a chance.
Monogatari really is one of the most unique series ever made, I've been watching anime for over a decade and have yet to see anything like it. It takes a little getting used to and can be hard to follow sometimes, but it's 100% worth watching and should be experienced by every anime fan at least once jmo. It's an amazing series with some of the weirdest, yet most likeable characters you'll ever see.
it's not anime in the broader sense but the only thing i think it gets closer to it it's bojack horseman, it has a different subject entirely, as monogari is a coming of age story bojack is an end of the journey story and what happens after life happens
I do like how you present monogatari and I agree that this is basically what the series tries to convey, however in practice I think there are some pretty big problems with it that you strategically omitted (not that I blame you). I'm of course refering to the fanservice, and specifically the many, m a n y unnecessary scenes where children are sexualised for no justifyable reason. To be clear, there is a lot to like about monogatari, but I cannot in good conscience recomend this show. I'd say kizumonogatari is probably my favorite entry and largely because it's the only part that adequately criticises Araragi for his obsession with weak little girls. But while Shinobu calls him out on it, he ends up doubling down and subjecting her to a pitiful life of a hopeless child that is entirely dependent on him for survival (and sustenance), which she very much didn't consent to. It's a really unnerving scene (and intentionally so), but it only gets worse from there. The sexual tension between Araragi and Shinobu, not to mention Mayoi, Yotsugi and HIS SISTERS is something that feels like it really shouldn't be in the show. I really can't say the show ever properly adresses this. Araragi is judged for his actions, but not as much for his weird fetishes, and for whatever reason he kisses every single loli in the show (they never show him kissing Senjougahara btw). Some of these scenes are downright painful to watch, but there are also a good deal of really amazing ones. It's a weird show. I want to like it, but I also can't stomach it sometimes. I don't judge anyone that can though. And I know the lolis are 500 years old but I don't think anyone is buying that joke anymore. Also some of them are legitimate kids and his sisters. He also time travells and sexually harasses child Hanekawa because of course that had to happen.
I am interested to hear how people cope about this though, I know I did for a while and hey, maybe I'm wrong and there really was a good reason for that toothbrush scene. And groping Mayoi as a gag. And all the feet.
there isn't any justifiable reason really and comes off disturbing but that's kind of the goal. It's a culture barrier type of thing. Eastern nations like Japan don't see a problem with making jokes like that in fiction and find them funny where Western nations tend to take it more seriously and get offended. I'd caulk it up to the east separates fiction from reality very harshly in media, and the west applies their values to fiction more strictly, and so what wouldn't cause any disruptions in Japan would in America. As someone who separates fiction and nonfiction pretty strongly, I even find scenes in Monogatari weird and disturbing which was kind of the point of writing Koyomi that way. I wish they didn't have it, but it's kind of not up to me. If the author wanted to make those kind of jokes, the author made those kind of jokes.
@@socksensei I see. I suppose that's fair. It's not like I dislike the shock humor in monogatari over all and it's a big part of it's identity in a way. But it does go a bit too far with it at times in my opinion. Though I do appreciate how it mostly uses fanservice to ridiculize itself instead of just exploiting it like most anime. It has the right idea but the delivery doesn't always hit I guess.
You're taking the humor scenes wayy to seriously. The kissing scenes are mostly just there for humor/fanservice, and neither of those scenes seem to characterize araragi as having genuine attraction towards those characters. The "sexual tension" that you speak of also isn't really a thing. The only two characters that have genuine sexual tension with araragi are Hanekawa and Senjoughara... the remainder of the fanservice scenes are either done for gag purposes (toothbrush scene), characterization (Shinobu bathing scene), or plot set up (yotsugi foot to the face) often times doing multiple things simultaneously. Could the show have changed the fanservice scenes to make them more SFW? Sure... but it would be a fundamentally different show as the "ecchi" element is kind of vital to its identity.
"He lies and tells Koyomi to not worry about him being Hitagi's first love" Spoiler: This is clearly shown to not be much of a lie later on. And once you've seen more, suddenly Hitagi wanting to keep Koyomi away from Kaiki makes more sense, as to not unveil this past chapter in her life, as well as the secret meetings she'd have with him in the future to solve the snake problem and the way they act towards each other, all the while having told Araragi of how much she hates Kaiki and making him stay away from Araragi, who likely not only would get agry at Kaiki for what Hitakgi told him about the conman, but also because Kaiki's words during Karen Bee probably stuck to him, and he is not only jealous, but also has to fight for his spot in Hitagi's heart (even though she'd only love Araragi), and this is a paralel to Hitagi defending her spot in Araragi's heart from Hanekawa, as you'd see throughout the series, where she tries to be more like the ideal Hanekawa (haircut, etc) to please Araragi.
I remember binging through this series in one fell swoop during the pandemic, and I fell in love with the art, music and story. I remember reading through chapters of Kizu before tackling each of the movies, and that hit like nothing else Since you started this series of videos, I was wondering when you’d tackle this especially since I knew you had a lot to say already from your previous videos, and I think you did a phenomenal job. Keep up the great work, guy. Can’t wait for the rest of the series. Also Hanekawa is best girl I will die on that hill
I have watched every installment of the monogatori series including movies in release order and got very frustrated with the pacing, koyomi's perverted acts, lengthy monologues and fan service after the first season and really fell out of love with the series for many years after finishing it. I want to say this video essay, distilled like this and in chronological order has brought me back to realize it actually is a really interesting anime adaptation with worthwhile things to say about mental health, peoples personal motivations, flaws, and how they relate to others. Loved this video thank you so much!
getting frustrated with this story is a totally fair reaction because imo the series is transgressive, it actively is trying to frustrate the reader/viewer in order to make them look at the series with a more inquisitive mind instead of mindlessly consuming it. a lot of art house media does this because it's an effective way at drawing out more honest and emotional responses from people, but that doesn't mean those responses must be positive. having a negative reaction to things like koyomi's perversions and fan service is just as valid as having positive reaction to it or no reaction at all... it's all meant to make you think and express yourself honestly. it's the beauty of this story is it's so open for interpretation and I think the vast majority of interpretations people have hold some validity to them.
@@telegangst3r why exactly do you consider the sexualization as "unnecessary" in this show ? And why should everyone have an instant negative reaction ? Seems a bit illogical doesn't it ?
Thank you very much for tackling this huge task of an anime. It really isn't easy trying to follow the main plot and timeline of this anime but that's what I love about it. It's very EVERYWHERE and jumps around all over the place. I love how unique it truly is on telling whatever story it's telling and the way they went about it. I know alot of people hated this anime and kinda story telling, but I always felt memorized and in entranced about the whole thing. Thx again for part 1 and I can't wait for part 2.
Are you gonna make more Monogatari videos after Off & Monster Season anime starts this July? I'm so hyped for it, and there are so few videos that cover the novels that come after the main story.
I have had an issue trying to stay on track with watching this series for years. Watching your video in tandem with each season gave me a lot of clarity and understanding without giving the entirety of the story away. Thanks for giving me the chance to fully get to experience the story by myself 😊
After viewing, I wanna add that I loved it. You do a great job of approaching each story at levels of interpretation that it was could potentially mean, then drawing all those narratives into a conclusion. Especially near Kaiki arc where you delve into the nuances of him being a pseudo antagonist. I loved it, I hope this blows up so more people watch this show.
thank you for another great video :) this anime looks really great and i would like to watch it sometime. it reminds me of tokyo ghoul a little bit. im a big fan of your channel and always look forward to new uploads.
Great video. Might actually have to save the latter half for later.. Haven't caught up with the more recent seasons, but put on one I didn't recognize the other day to show a friend and it just so happened to be a scene with one of the sisters in the bath and he was like, "What the fuck is wrong with you?" xD
My god please continue this, I love how you presented the flow of the story that mainly confuses on the narrative importance. Monogatari series in my perspective is like watching a book being read to the viewer and this video covers the important story beats that makes its story interesting. For the others who wants to watch the series itself, just go do that cause this video focused on the story but the show is action packed and hilarious if you know the Japanese word play and joke beats/references.
Monogatari is literally watching a book. The novels have th exact same type of narration. They give much more funny interactions and monologues explaining the why's of the novel's protagonist.
This is easily the best video dissecting the story/theme/character writing of Monogatari that i have seen. I enjoyed the very clear and concise manner in which you were able to keep focus on the core narrative of the series, that being Koyomi's constant internal struggle towards self-worth and acceptance, and how his short comings and conflicts affect all of the people in his life. The fact that all of these different people he has a connection with, all find themselves facing similar issues, and all end up either facing them or coping and stuffing them away, which is where Araragi falls, that's the reality of dealing with personal problems, and the maturity that is necessary to resolve them head on is what Araragi takes this entire series to learn.
I really appreciated this video. When i first started watching, I was confused. Thanks to your video, I now realized I watched this completely out of order lol. Your video really cleared things up and explained the story eloquently. I might need to do a rewatch in the proper order soon.
Wow... Just.. wow. There's just so much. Yet, again I find things here and get some sort of closure to things that I deal with currently. Please continue with your analysis of this wonderful series as well as doing Steins;Gate 0 as well, man.

If you're wondering why the video (currently) seems to be underperforming, it seems that RUclips may not be notifying some of your viewers about the upload. I got a notification for the video on my phone, but not my computer, which is why I'm bringing it up. No clue why it would do that as this is the first time I've encountered such an issue.
Interesting viewing this later in life, when I watched it early highschool I just like the jokes and the interactions the characters had. Watching this now made me realize all the deep core values that were hidden behind the surface 😊
with most anime like monogatari and fate, its best just go off what year the anime came out and by what studio. Monogatari, I think has had the same studio Shaft since first season and the movies, so going off by what year came out, is the best watch order as for fate it had 2006 (saber route) anime and 2010 movie done by studio deen, but when had reboot with fate zero in 2011, ubw and when heavens movies, hopefully we get saber route and it can be complete home run for my goats at studio ufotable

Loved this series at the start, but it really lost me with the increasingly long and dry monologues. In the first few arcs they covered this with the beautifully striking animation, but as it went on it felt like the monologues got longer and the animation cut back more and more into reusable b-roll animation. It's an interesting story but I feel they got too wrapped up in the show being talky and "cerebral" when they really needed to put in the work paring down the dialogue so it works for an animation. Adaptation is an art, its not meant to be 1 for 1 when going from a still medium to a moving one. I often thought about going back and watching it but every time I heard about new seasons it was always through pervy gifs and it just felt like they were using fanservice to hold the audience attention through those deserts of dialogue. Such a waste of a beautiful show.
I wonder how the sawarineko would react to someone who buried it out of disgust rather than pity. Someone who felt grossed out by the sight of a dead cat on the side of the road, and thought that burying it would stop it from infecting anyone else who came in contact with it. Someone who instead of saying a prayer for the buried cat, would rather literally wash their hands of the encounter as soon as possible. Preferably with scalding hot water.
Right around ~51:00, a question sparked in my head. When do Hanekawa and Senjougahara actually become friends? The video at this point asserts that Senjou fears Hanekawa, but I don't remember having that feeling on any of my viewings at this point. I think she's genuine in caring for her situation, or at least caring for Araragi's sake as he certainly cares. Additionally all of the kids seem pretty relaxed at comfortable with one another at the closing of Bake while they casually reminisce about Oshino. However we do know come Nise that Senjou does fear Hanekawa, or at least fears the influence Hanekawa could have over Araragi and their relationship given Hanekawa's theat of asking him out. However, however we also know that come Neko Shiro they're very close friends, or at leasts that's how Senjougahara feels given all she does for Hanekawa this arc. It's nothing major ofcourse, but i think it's fun to thin about and i appreciate this video sparking that train of thought. It's entirely for reasons like this that i love to listen to people discuss their perspectives on Monogatari :D
Danm... probably the first 1 hour long video i've watched in normal speed and without pausing it to do other things every now and then. Awesome script and narration. I've watched monogatari in high school, and at that time the last one released was "monogatari series second season", and i never went back to watch the rest, because i forgot most of the story. Monogatari is too dense and slow for me to watch the same thing again. You did me a favor, thank you.
The Monogatari Series drives me insane. It has some of my all-time least favorite plotlines and characters in anime and simultaneously some of my absolute favorite visual storytelling and character dialogues/interactions. I want to hate this show so, so, so much. But I just can’t deny good art.
I remembered only in hindsight, but someone I know proposed the idea that Monogatari can essentially be viewed as this allegorically Christian tale, which I do like to think about though I have yet to really continue watching beyond Nisemonogatari.
Monogatari imo is the greatest anime of all time. But damn this video is so well made, I am happy it has a Chapter 2 because I can't wait to watch it later. This is fire man, thanks for the hardwork & effort!

@@JosephJoestar-ld3qv cat scene?
toothbrush scene probablyyy
monogatari has so many "THAT scene"s that I don't even know which one you're referring to.
I would say "You do not know how hard it is to explain or onboard other people to this anime" but you know exactly that pain my brother. Thank you for this focused explanation i can only hope more give this series a chance.
So true, I feel awkward recommending it, even though it’s great. I think that’s why the Hitagi arc came first, it’s the least morally dubious…
holy, you weren't kidding. You really did make sense of monogatari
It's fiction
"He lies and tells Koyomi to not worry about him being Hitagi's first love"
Spoiler:
This is clearly shown to not be much of a lie later on.
I’ll get to that soon lemme cook, I got a different theory on that section
I remember binging through this series in one fell swoop during the pandemic, and I fell in love with the art, music and story. I remember reading through chapters of Kizu before tackling each of the movies, and that hit like nothing else
Since you started this series of videos, I was wondering when you’d tackle this especially since I knew you had a lot to say already from your previous videos, and I think you did a phenomenal job.
Loved this video thank you so much!
getting frustrated with this story is a totally fair reaction because imo the series is transgressive, it actively is trying to frustrate the reader/viewer in order to make them look at the series with a more inquisitive mind instead of mindlessly consuming it. a lot of art house media does this because it's an effective way at drawing out more honest and emotional responses from people, but that doesn't mean those responses must be positive. having a negative reaction to things like koyomi's perversions and fan service is just as valid as having positive reaction to it or no reaction at all... it's all meant to make you think and express yourself honestly. it's the beauty of this story is it's so open for interpretation and I think the vast majority of interpretations people have hold some validity to them.
nope, everybody should have a negative reaction to unnecessary sexualisation, it does not help the story in any way
@@telegangst3r Valid and understandable, generalization is a sin.
@@telegangst3r why exactly do you consider the sexualization as "unnecessary" in this show ? And why should everyone have an instant negative reaction ? Seems a bit illogical doesn't it ?
@@Unspecifiedweeb so you're saying sexualising women in this case was... necessary?
Existentialist all the way through
Thank you for creating this! I always wanted to see the series but I couldn't stomach the fanservice
sounds pretty weak.
what is there to make sense of ? the story is pretty straight foward and thouroughly spelled out to the viewer .
Great video! It’d be a really nice watch if you did ( Black Lagoon ) next :)
So some mentally problematic girls that get helped by Mr. MC but need help from theirselves or someone else to truely fix their problems
so hyped cannot wait, hope it has great story telling like his evangelion videos
thank you for another great video :) this anime looks really great and i would like to watch it sometime. it reminds me of tokyo ghoul a little bit. im a big fan of your channel and always look forward to new uploads.
I appreciate it!
It's art, but it's kinda hard to recommend due to Araragi's... Questionable opinions toward children.
37:00 Moe as in 萌
Great video. Might actually have to save the latter half for later.. Haven't caught up with the more recent seasons, but put on one I didn't recognize the other day to show a friend and it just so happened to be a scene with one of the sisters in the bath and he was like, "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
xD
My god please continue this, I love how you presented the flow of the story that mainly confuses on the narrative importance.
Monogatari series in my perspective is like watching a book being read to the viewer and this video covers the important story beats that makes its story interesting.
For the others who wants to watch the series itself, just go do that cause this video focused on the story but the show is action packed and hilarious if you know the Japanese word play and joke beats/references.
Monogatari is literally watching a book. The novels have th exact same type of narration. They give much more funny interactions and monologues explaining the why's of the novel's protagonist.
Thank you so much for this. I was at rock bottom of my life when I watched this series. My life is on track now. This just gives me nostalgia.
Would I end up watching the Monogatari series again after this video? Absolutely, it's like I'm reviving the moment I first fell in love with it.
Glad I could be of service
Thank you so much for making this- it was a great analysis and a much-needed refresher on the show ahead of Off Season and Monster Season!
I miss when anime characters and manga had freaking NOSES. I'll never understand the lack of noses in today's styles/s
Wow... Just.. wow. There's just so much. Yet, again I find things here and get some sort of closure to things that I deal with currently. Please continue with your analysis of this wonderful series as well as doing Steins;Gate 0 as well, man.
Hello mr. Sock, i can't wait for a premiere of this video, i hope u will be making more of them and keep up ur schedule as u did earlier, also how about u make a code Geass video next, or maybe a haruhi Suzumiya one, how about a ergo proxy one as well, nonetheless keep up the good work im counting on u
This video is amazing man. It's just amazing. Thank you for bringing to light so many anime for me that I would otherwise not have heard of
This video is simply a masterpiece thank you for your hardwork.
I thought tsubasa cat the same as nekomonogatari, and the source of Hanekawa's stress is Koyomi's having girlfriend (Hitagi)
Amazing analysis… but surely you’re trolling with the way you’re pronouncing some of these names?
Great video 👍
Eating poop might sounds disgusting but from another perspective it could be delicious.
its always nice when you upload because i know what classic to watch next
Day 1 of asking for vagabond
"Confusing watch order" AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA absolute brainlet
with most anime like monogatari and fate, its best just go off what year the anime came out and by what studio.
Monogatari, I think has had the same studio Shaft since first season and the movies, so going off by what year came out, is the best watch order
as for fate it had 2006 (saber route) anime and 2010 movie done by studio deen, but when had reboot with fate zero in 2011, ubw and when heavens movies, hopefully we get saber route and it can be complete home run for my goats at studio ufotable
yo bro why did you get rid of all your videos?

Loved the video, specially because it was made by someone who loves the series and that shows throughout the 1:23:12 that the it lasts
Bless you sock sensei
Thank you I really wanna watch this and I don't get it
Skill issue I figured it out at 16
Monogatari is cringe and overrated and I thought HXH is the worst
I remember when there was mainly just the Eva video in this series and I was so hungry for more, but now all my favorite shows are getting their own entry and I'm eating the best I ever have
how did i get from renai circulation to this
I HAVE to sub, watched this all on the bus and was just mesmerized by the quality. Thank you so much for the video and I’m now frothing at the mouth for more
You are way to good at this
Someone said it’s even more enjoyable as a Japanese speaker because they have a emphasis on language
I wouldn’t know tho 🤷♂️
Is correct
Pleaseeee work on a part 2 for this when you got time. I would love to hear your vocalization and emotional/mental breakdown of the latter parts of the show such as owarimonogatari and koyomimonogatari
U shouldn't have glossed over the toothbrush scene.
I think video would be over 1 hour
Please make a part 2!
Pleeeeease, we need a continuation, i get a feeling that im going to do a rewatch because of your analysis :3c

What the heck are you even trying to say? "Selfnessness is selfish" Do you even comprehend this part or are you just regurgitating the 21st century american teen zeitgeist?
He wants to do good not for the sake of others but so that he feels like a good person. His motivation is self Indulgent, he’s not selfless.
Every person's life needs a monogatari experience at least once

I'm glad you're still talking about this series. I'm currently on my 3rd/4th rewatch, this time I got a friend to watch it with me and he's enjoyed it. I watched your vids from years ago then noticed you put out this video a few days ago. Super well put together, thanks for making this. Also I'm a bit out of the loop - I don't really know what Off or Monster Season is about but I'm excited nonetheless
Awesome coverage, made understand and appreciate the anime more.
This is such a good video on Monogatari
The series is definitely brain cluster sometimes and there are SOOOO much to focus on. Like the background, the poses, facial expressions, the wording, the metaphors etc. but this series will always be in my Top 3 anime series. I probably watched about 400+ animes in a course of 12yrs (started watching at 14yrs). This series has you thinking not to mention it’s pretty funny too. If you haven’t watched it I recommend Highly to start. You’ll probably be like wtf even going on but trust we all been there and you just have to pick up the pieces as you go until you get the picture
Your content is both fantastic and consistent. Both being unheard of in this youtube anime sphere
Yeah... Finally I know Koyomi. When watching the show, I understood everyone except Koyomi Araragi (ironic I know).
This is a great analysis
Masked man needs to watch this
Your "order of events" anime explanations are accessible, near thesis-level PSAs. Gratitude!
P.S. - This channel should, and likely one day will, have MANY more subscribers. Best to you on that journey
after 20 minutes i am incapable of understanding the plot
I’d encourage you to work on your concentration.
The plot is pretty easy to understand. What is your hurdle? What aspect is making it difficult for you?
MORE MONOGATARI CONTENT IS COMING????
WOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!!!
