This is something “interesting “ I found, that that is the danger of humans, we will do something if it was our job. For example, take a look at sll the police officer that followed Hitlers orders. When they were questioned, that is what they said, they didn’t “necessarily believe” in genocide like hitler (which I disagree with) but that they were simply following orders, not hatred from their hearts
@@juannavarrete9647 That is partially true, as those trials also led to some of the most famous social psychology experiments like the Milgram Experiment and Zimbardo/Stanford Prison Experiment (the former having been done a couple times since the '50s and then updated in the '90s/2000s, but both experiments have also been ruled as not fully up to scientific fact as they had replication crisis issues like many social psychology experiments have unfortunately gone through, especially the latter). This is definitely of one the best anime of all time. It’s not you see such a carefully laid out plot, with complex characters, and with a mystery that keeps you hooked till the end. Especially not one in such a realistic setting. I think that’s what makes it so horrific at times. While it’s unlikely for such a thing to happen in theory it could and to certain extent similar things do happen all the time. I really like the doctor as well. A very good representation of a more pacifist ideology without making you want to pull your hair out over their choices. It’s a depiction of a realistically good person that wants to protect and save people in whatever he can.
The show seems slow paced for my sperg brain, but from what Ive heard is that Johan is one of the most interesting characters, Im so stoked to watch this!

You’ve earned a new sub please keep up the amazing work as the only thing stopping me from watching the other videos is spoilers on an anime I haven’t seen yet!
Actually I think the end can also be interpreted differently in that Tenma just saves Johann to not make the boy's drunken father a killer, but a father saving his son instead. Having sad that: Great summary and good pronounciation of the German names for not being a German native speaker. Deserves a like and sub.
This is incredibly well edited, the audios clean, the story telling and plot play by play is both succinct and informative. How the hell did I not find Sock sooner??
its been 10 years since I watched this and this was one hell of recommendation. What a great summary and the questione you leave in there to make me think about certain events in it are great. Leaving a sub, just in case!

That was a wild ride my man, mind thoroughly 🤯Monster is a classic, an Anime I'd recommend to anyone if they have the patience to allow the plot to unfold. As Sock-san has so masterfully laid out is a very accurate movie length version of the entire series. Better for people to watch this video after watching the Anime though - maybe add a spoiler tag? Regardless, thanks for creating this, I really enjoyed the breakdown/trip down memory lane. Quite the passion project with the attention to detail you put into it, bravo.
Watched the whole video and this is very well made. I wasn't able to finish the series because I dont have much time so this saves me a lot because I was really curious about the story. Keep it up!
another very well researched and very well explained analysis. I feel so grateful to have been introduced to your work and with every upload I'm reminded as to why
Grimmer, Johan, and Roberto. All expressions of the same monster(s) but differently. Johan became a nihilistic monster through his early dissociation which caused his developing consciousness to latch onto the only thing he could remember being. Grimmer was much the same way, a manufactured monster through trauma and dissociation and abuse and negligence, but one who found meaning in other people and eventually grew to shed his monster. Roberto, not a monster in his own right, is meant to be a foil to Grimmer, a man who, while not explicitly a monster, becomes a monster through his own actions. Like the reverse almost. The story I believe is meant to outline the actions and consequences of the two who had a choice, Grimmer and Roberto, and the story of these two is a commentary of the power of one’s own self determination. Everyone, at some point in their lives, will have their ‘ego’ their entire sense of self ripped from under their feet. I believe the message of this beautiful story is that regardless of what happens to us we are only what we choose to be.
@@RhythapriyaArumugam Christof is less of a main character in the plot. We can tell this by the lack of plot attention given to his ending, so it can be interpreted that the author of monster didn’t believe this character was as important to establishing the end of Monster. For his own character though, Christof is mainly meant to show the psychological impact of kinderheim 511 in its victims because he is not able to feel emotions, but still thanks Tenma for saving his life. He is a necessary character to the plot, not because of his particular qualities but lack thereof, illustrating to us how even normal people can be damaged by the type of psychological torture experienced by these kids in kinderheim 511. He is also meant to show the impact of this organization and how it lingers to this day, illustrating the importance of how we raise our children to society.
I gotta say, this is such a good summary and analysis. The only thing I really think you should have included is some of the light hearted parts. You hit all the major plot points, but to be honest the parts that hit the hardest for me are the ones where the author shows that there is still good in the world outside of the monster. Some of my favorite moments are "promise when we meet again, we'll have a picnic" and "Tenma told me we could create new memories, happy memories."
The show has many similarities with the very good book "le grand cahier" by Agota Kristof, a story of two young sociopathic twins who grow in a violent time of war, very good and well recognised book
Sock sensei, this is the first video of yours i have ever seen, Your voice is amazing, and this video had me sitting on the edge of my seat watching the whole thing in one solid go. Absolutely amazing work! Have my sub and like its the absolute least it deserves
i usually cant stand listening to documentary youtubers or people that make video essays but you've successfully changed me on that. at least about you in particular. usually these video essays I try to watch the commentator is talking to you in an almost degrading way. a way that kinda makes it look like they're trying to tell you that you shouldve known this information and that you're dumb for not knowing it. just today i finished watching monster and without a doubt it's my favorite anime. im usually not very good at watching shows no matter how much i love them because i tend to forget details too fast even if theyre importnant to the story and matter to me. i was looking for a good recap on monster to find any details id missed and you opened my eyes to a lot of them. i thought that i was doing good keeping track of the whole story but because i forget stuff really easily im glad i had this video to help me with that.
I love your synopsis as usual. I've been trying to get into Monster myself but damn, as a german myself, I sometimes cringe so hard at how cliche some of that stuff is. For example whenever they write or say something in german, it's usually littered with mistakes and much to my own disappointment, "real" Germany does not look as fairy-tale like. But yeah, other than that great show
Great video the only thing is that grimmer and Robert (Adolf) didn’t went to kinderheim 511 in the johan generation they went in the 60s as one of the first generation of kindeheim.
Honestly this is one of the best critiques of Monster that I have ever seen!!! Kudos to you my friend this video is definitely going in my like videos and I will check out more of your contact!! Keep up the excellent content
I did a non-spoiler review of Monster and THAT was hard enough so I truly appreciate the work put into this video. Fantastic breakdown. The conversation between investigators "comparing notes" and arguing theories was absolutely epic. One of my favorite scenes of the show
Grimmer and Roberto are from a different generation than Johan, they're considered graduates from Kinderheim 511 and weren't present during the incident, Johan and his 'apprentice' were the last children on Kinderheim 511, the 2 kids that were hiding with the 'apprentice' are around the same age as Johan and him, but Roberto and Grimmer are waaaaay older
Jesus christ i just realised something. When Wolf meets t Tenma later on, he talks about how there is no one left alive to be able to validate that he is who he says he is. He is the only one left who truly knows that he is in fact who he is. Johan had told him after wolf had given him the name Johan and asked how he was feeling, "I will soon show you." Theres definitely some connection between Johan telling him this and him killing all of the people who knew of wolf and turning him into "The Monster With No Name". He had a name but there was no one left to call him by it.
And the scariest thing is. Johan couldn't even call himself by his name since he literally had no name. His first memories are that He had to pretend to be someone else. Thats why Johan isn't the Nameless Monster. He is just The Monster. With nothing. Not a single thing that he has.
"You see sister, I did terrible things as a child" "No, I did those things" "... I am so embarrassed I'm going to kill myself now" That's it that's the ending
Wait what did anita do? I know she witnessed ONE terrible event (rose mansion massacre) but thats it unless u count her bro convincing her to shoot him. What did she do that I missed?
It's more: "I saw terrible things as a child" and her: "no I saw that and told you and now your a monster and I'm responsible I need to kms now" And him: "Ah shit I guess ima kill those responsible for my other traumas and kms also."
Hey I hope you are able to grow as a channel and do more videos like this and of stuff you enjoy. Great content!! Thank you and keep it up. Also you should do jojo part 2 inaccurately recapped next if you can !

I missed so much of it when I watched the series, although I still loved it, but this gives me a whole new level of appreciation for the brilliance. It took to come up with this deep layered narrative as well as the incredible character/world building.
1:09:30 Besides his morals, remember the kid's alcoholic father was being taken away for murder, so by saving Johans life, Tenma was also reducing the guys sentence (in case the judge didnt see it as clear self defense).
I remember this being one of the handful of anime series I watched, I think it must have been 13 years ago. I remember it being very dark and captivating and it left an impression but I have no idea what happened anymore lol. Looking forward to watching this video as a recap of sorts.
Looking forward to this! I'm a big fan of your content and can now finally watch this video now that I've finished it myself, and what a series it was! It so quickly has become one of my favorites which is crazy because I almost dropped it after the first episode (was watching a couple other things and wasn't sure I should start a new series) I've never been happier to have given a series a second shot!
i guess the antichrist reference is sufficient, but there's got to be more to it specifically having four heads. Ana, "the prince", and "the monster" are three people who have existed in Johan's head. is there a fourth?
This video made a lot of things clear to me about the story and really cleared up points that I missed. It made me appreciate the story more. Thank you sir
monster did something a horror didn't do for me in long time, i must say that the fact that part of it played out in my country helped with that, but when i saw Liebert close to kids, it just instilled this fear for what can happen, the dread. if i see lets say, Jason Voorheese around kids, i know hell just kill them but with Liebert? it quickly became one of my favorite anime and horrors.
It's not hard to understand if you pay attention lol. Very good story telling. One thing that is left to mystery. Is that if yohan(i know this aint how its spelled lol) was actually some kind of monster or not. I think he was, because of the ending. I think the experiment they were doing on the kids actually worked on him. Maybe he gained some kind of power or something. One thing we definitely know, is that he went crazy and became evil or something. How he burn down the red rose mansion and everyone died? They left that part open. Because I think yohan did it somehow. The ending was crazy. He shouldn't have been able to move. But he escapes out the window? Some people say someone pulled him out. But who could've done it? I think he healed up really fast and jumped out the window. Or he just got up and felt no pain 😮
The red rose mansion. It was implied that the bookwriter I forget all his names had poisoned the wine that everyone drunk and told whichever of the children who was actually there to run away
@@AC-on5fo It showed yohan peeking through the door watching everyone die. Maybe the book writer was the last one to die and he figured yohan did it. Maybe he figured the experiment worked and told him to run free? I think yohan burned the place down after. Becoming a serial killer after. Didn't they find the book writer burned up?
@THIZZAVELI no the book writer was bonaparte he was the same guy that done the book readings and the old hotel guy from the final episodes and I'm pretty sure it was confirmed how he was the one to murder everyone there and that the trauma from this incident is what made Johan a monster but the ending suggests that Johan was actually left at home and nina was the one who went to the mansion and witnessed the massacre but there's no way to actually know who went
Summed up the series very well! Monster is one of those things that makes sense in my head, but turns into a jumbled mess when I try to explain its depth. Also, I hope you don't mind but Lunge's name is pronounced Loon-geh, and not Loonj.
The only issue I have with this manga (I read the manga only) is that Tenma felt to me like somewhat a Mary Sue. He's the best brain surgeon, he is brave, bold, learns to shoot like hell, runs like an athlete... But indeed, he needed to be a bit like that for the pacing to work, and it's a marvelous manga.
Fantastic work. I've watched Monster 3 or 4 times over the years. I first saw it when I was only 14, and so I couldn't grasp all these complexities at the time. This was an incredible video to check my understanding. What a sad yet beautiful story. (Now to get the manga volumes and finally read the source material!)
Pretty sure you're wrong about Grimmer and Roberto being in 511 around the same time as Johan and Christoff since the former two are much older than the latter two.
After escaping from the hospital in the final scene, Johan went and became Hisoka. (Same voice actor in the English dub, go figure. They are kind of similar when you think about it lol.)
Inspector Lunge is one of my favourite characters throughout fiction. Chasing Tenma like a madman and slowly but surely having to reconcile with the fact the true culprit is a man who in many ways doesn’t exist. Also his dealing with Roberto went hard

28:32 Landline phones don’t require power to work. Amazing video sir. Must have taken you an entire year just to get this script made. Just wow.
Actually I think the end can also be interpreted differently in that Tenma just saves Johann to not make the boy's drunken father a killer, but a father saving his son instead. Having sad that:
Great summary and good pronounciation of the German names for not being a German native speaker.
Your video essays and conclusions are just so rational/ argumentative and emotional at the same time. I am left thought-provoked, even after i had watched the anime i found more, significant things that i overlooked. Thank you and you deserve much more recognition ❤❤❤
The way you have the perfect voice for these videos I don’t know how to describe but keep doing these sort of videos
thank you
Watched the whole video and this is very well made.
What monster would kristoff be?
@@уронить ohh I see! That's interesting wow
That's a missed opportunity by me, those scenes really do hit hard.
The show has many similarities with the very good book "le grand cahier" by Agota Kristof, a story of two young sociopathic twins who grow in a violent time of war, very good and well recognised book
Sock sensei, this is the first video of yours i have ever seen,
Your voice is amazing, and this video had me sitting on the edge of my seat watching the whole thing in one solid go.
Long video, but well explained and interesting, so definitely worth the time
Definitely one of the better breakdown videos I've seen. Excellent work.
I know it's been less than a day since this has been uploaded but man this is so underrated, it's soo good!
By far the best video explaining chronological order of things I’ve seen
3:55 - I love the concept that Stories have that big of a power over people. I like to believe they do.
You deserve way more clout my friend, this video is just amazing
I love your synopsis as usual. I've been trying to get into Monster myself but damn, as a german myself, I sometimes cringe so hard at how cliche some of that stuff is. For example whenever they write or say something in german, it's usually littered with mistakes and much to my own disappointment, "real" Germany does not look as fairy-tale like. But yeah, other than that great show
Great video the only thing is that grimmer and Robert (Adolf) didn’t went to kinderheim 511 in the johan generation they went in the 60s as one of the first generation of kindeheim.
The way Johan did Richard in was telling him that he looked into his case and found that he was only drunk after he had taken out the 16 year old.
This video is really in depth and cool, I hope it gets more views soon
How the fuck is a video essay leaving me with the same emotion as Oppenheimer?
Bro fucking hell you good
Hi I hope you get this message. As I get older I stopped watching anime but you explaining them allows them to be even better. So thank you
Only 1k likes for this masterpiece is crazy ur underrated asf sock
This video was so good you deserved more attention
Excellent recap, never watched Monster but definitely will, thank you!
Beside the fact that i had a heart attack when he pronounced "MUNIK", the video as always is amazing.
my apologies I swear I actually know how to say it lol
@@socksensei it just caught me off guard lol
@@socksensei german here cant blame ya
Honestly this is one of the best critiques of Monster that I have ever seen!!! Kudos to you my friend this video is definitely going in my like videos and I will check out more of your contact!! Keep up the excellent content
Someone mentioned to me how he says eggscape instead of escape and now I cannot unhear it.
this guy needs more love, his videos are amazing
THANK GODD U MADE THIS I TRIED SO HARD TO FINISH THIS ANIME BUT COULDN'T CUS I KEPT GETTING BUSYY
Thank you for making this. Great content.
Please do more!!! this was actually so well done
Yo, another underrated channel with 100+ videos and
Jesus christ i just realised something. When Wolf meets t
Tenma later on, he talks about how there is no one left alive to be able to validate that he is who he says he is.
HOLY SHIT
Amazing video essay! One of my favorite series.
"You see sister, I did terrible things as a child"
"No, I did those things"
"... I am so embarrassed I'm going to kill myself now"
That's it that's the ending
Wait what did anita do? I know she witnessed ONE terrible event (rose mansion massacre) but thats it unless u count her bro convincing her to shoot him. What did she do that I missed?
It's more:
"I saw terrible things as a child"
and her:
"no I saw that and told you and now your a monster and I'm responsible I need to kms now"
And him: "Ah shit I guess ima kill those responsible for my other traumas and kms also."
Hey I hope you are able to grow as a channel and do more videos like this and of stuff you enjoy. Great content!! Thank you and keep it up. Also you should do jojo part 2 inaccurately recapped next if you can !
I will at somepoint the pillar men deserve their time to shine
Wonderful video, my mate! I love this story very dearly, and it was great to revisit it though this video! Much respect, and Please Come to Brazil.
I know it didn't get as many views as you're evangelion video but I would really say that this is some tier S+ content, if you keep making this explanations I'll keep coming backand I'll keep dropping likes and comments, but if we're on this vein might I recommend a video on elfen leid,
Thank you for this carefully crafted breakdown. You did a great job capturing the essence of this story!
“Moo-nick”-😂
But on a serious note, fantastic video.
Johan lives in the book. He lives and have normal live
i guess the antichrist reference is sufficient, but there's got to be more to it specifically having four heads. Ana, "the prince", and "the monster" are three people who have existed in Johan's head. is there a fourth?
That was the perfect blend of recap and analysis, well done!
Kinderheim 511, 4 boys survived... 911... I dunno dude
tysm for the vid i watched monster but never truly felt like i understood it
no problem
This video made a lot of things clear to me about the story and really cleared up points that I missed.
It made me appreciate the story more.
Thank you sir
anytime
monster did something a horror didn't do for me in long time, i must say that the fact that part of it played out in my country helped with that, but when i saw Liebert close to kids, it just instilled this fear for what can happen, the dread.
if i see lets say, Jason Voorheese around kids, i know hell just kill them but with Liebert?
it quickly became one of my favorite anime and horrors.
super in depth video. Best Monster summary ive ever seen, great job!
I feel like Monster is the best representation of The Butterfly Effect.
How this channel doesn't have atleast 500k subs is a mystery to me
It's not hard to understand if you pay attention lol.
R
Your the best at explaining all these complicated anime or manga. I really love your videos
Oh, I have nothing in my closet. I mean, really. I oughta do some shopping.
Summed up the series very well! Monster is one of those things that makes sense in my head, but turns into a jumbled mess when I try to explain its depth.
Also, I hope you don't mind but Lunge's name is pronounced Loon-geh, and not Loonj.
48:45 - "Grimmer stays hard". I found it funny.
This was quite the experience.
20:16 - Ooooh, I like this guy!
Pretty sure you're wrong about Grimmer and Roberto being in 511 around the same time as Johan and Christoff since the former two are much older than the latter two.
Just finished this anime and this video was absolutely phenomenal, Great job
God bless you for putting this massive amount of work into this video, it does justice to the masterpiece Monster is
The only video one needs to watch after watching Monster. Thankyou so much man. Loved it.
After escaping from the hospital in the final scene, Johan went and became Hisoka.
(Same voice actor in the English dub, go figure. They are kind of similar when you think about it lol.)
