Watching this video brings back wonderful memories! Great game! Thanks for posting it Pete! I was a student at Mizzou at this time and a Tiger Hostess! Go Mizzou!
That stupid crowd noise rule back then put control of the home crowd and the refs in the hands of the visiting QB, and they milked it for all it was worth. The visiting QB's used to put on an act worthy of a drama award.
@etramway The clip that was called was against a solid guy named Tim Helm. He was finishing a block, fell, and his facemask tipped the Cyclone player's heel. Tough call and tough loss .
@johnnyquest1867 - Thanks for the info. My sister and her family live in Springfield. Her husband is a professor at Missouri State. I was wondering where Bull is. I know he was coaching at Miami (O) at the past few years, but knew that the staff at Miami had left. Glad to know he's still coaching. Clay and Bull were good friends.
Missouri finished 6-5 because their schedule was brutal and took a toll on the team by the end. Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Oklahoma St., and Iowa St. were all good that year. But they got killed by a 5-6 Illinois team 31-6 too.
Missouri beat USC,Ohio State,North Carolina, Nebraska and Colorado. All were nationally ranked and USC,OSU and Nebraska finished in the top ten.All those quality wins and could only manage a 6-5 record and no bowl
@etramway Sorry, nothing on USC. At some point, I will have to load the Nebraska game from '76. Unfortunately, Mike Newman's copy (received it from him) has a blue scsreen in the second half. I also have some 1977 games to share. Not MU's best year, but some great players on that team, just as here.
Wasn't Mike an offensive lineman? I used to memorize those press guides as a kid... It is an honor to trade RUclips comments with you Pete. My dad had season tickets next to you for a few years and he was very proud to tell me about it. I just lost him a couple of months ago... we shared a lot of great Tiger memories.
Jeez Pete Woods! When you win the game on a two point convert, with seconds remaining, and upset OSU on their own field, you should milk a cheerleader's hug for as much as you can (LOL!)
@Betsie33 I guess that sounded bad, I would never criticize the player, he is a Tiger! But it is such a typical Tiger memory in that whenever anything good happens we are trained to scan the field for the flag. In my section there was a collective groan when the zebra reached for the flag.
Your video prompted me to sign up to RUclips! Wonderful video! We should swap information. I have some Nebraska - Missouri film & radio from 1964, 1967 and 1970 to present day...you know, 'way back' when Nebraska & Missouri were in the same conference. :)
Curtis Brown was such a stud running back. Betsie, do you have highlights of the USC game? I went to the Iowa State game later that year and a long Leo Lewis punt return was called back on a stupid stupid clip 30 yards behind Leo.
@johnnyquest1867 - Thanks so much for your message! My Dad was very fond of Ray as well as Norris Stevenson and all those great Tigers from the late 50s -early 60s teams. Is Ray still living? If so, please give him my best. We lost my Dad, Clay, four years ago at age 89. We miss him very much. Thanks again for you kind comment.
Bogus stoppage of play due to crowd noise. (Glad that was a short-lived rule!) Bogus touchdown. Bogus penalty on 2-point conversion. Yes, I watched through scarlet & gray colored glasses. 🤩
Those are awfully dark colored glasses. Blinding even. I have recently developed a relationship with Chris Ward, All-American offensive tackle from that team, who's a pastor in LA now.
Aside from a visiting QB being able to use that asinine crowd noise rule to manipulate the refs into giving his team free time outs, it's debatable that TD would stand in the era of video review. It did not appear he controlled the ball all the way through the catch in accordance with the NCAA "catch rule" (must control the ball long enough to "avoid or ward off an opponent").
@@RMB42 I think that, even today with review, it would be difficult to overturn the touchdown reception call on the field. The slow motion replay appears to show Leo Lewis (the receiver) catch and control the ball just before he goes out of bounds. It's only after he steps out of bounds that the ball is stripped from him. Admittedly, it's a "bang-bang" play, but I think the call would, in today's vernacular, "stand."
What a wonderfully whacky ride it was following these Mizzou teams in the 70s. Thanks for posting.
THAT MY BOY LEO LEWIS /CLASS OF 1978 /I HAD THE CHANCE 2 PLAY WITH LEO BACK IN 1978/
Hey, I remember you. Don't remember which game it was, but you ran a kickoff back for a TD.
Watching this video brings back wonderful memories! Great game! Thanks for posting it Pete! I was a student at Mizzou at this time and a Tiger Hostess! Go Mizzou!
What a great game! Go Missouri!

Harbaugh would pull that shit 10 years after this game.
Woody probably felt like punching somebody.
That TD a would’ve been ruled incomplete with today’s rules.
What a great lineup for Mizzou. Joe Stewart, Curtis Brown, Leo Lewis, Kellen Winslow. They beat USC, Alabama, Ohio State that year.
@ 1975
Thanks for posting. Great memories. My Dad was the color commentator. Where did you get the tape?

.
It weird to see the play stopped cause of the crowd is too loud

A classic Mizzou win!

Thank you. He was indeed. We miss him a lot.

+Dan Michaels They played Illinois the second game of the season...so the toll had not mounted at that stage.
THOSE WERE THE GOOD DAYS 1970S.

The Big Kat would get revenge on Corby Jones 20 years later!
And then Mizzou would get revenge 27 years later. lmao
Jeez Pete Woods! When you win the game on a two point convert, with seconds remaining, and upset OSU on their own field, you should milk a cheerleader's hug for as much as you can (LOL!)
Jim Leavitt, later USF head coach, is #40 on this video.

Happy to trade for MU games of mid-70s.
@etramway Understood. You can imagine how it felt from the field.
Curtis Brown was such a stud running back. Betsie, do you have highlights of the USC game?

my cousin was married to his cousin or something like that for awhile. they were related somehow , i never got to meet him though.
Ohio State is always loaded and we beat them over there but yet had no bowl or national ranking.
touchdown MISSOURI!
Man Missouri was great back than
No they were not great, they had 5 losses in 1976.
MIZ!

what a stupid rule that crowd noise rule was.
will get some recruits and than will see
WHAT YEAR.WAS THAT WAS ARCHIE GRIFFIN PLAYING I DON'T EVEN NO /GO MU/8/22/
No AG, he was gone two years prior. His brother Ray played, though.
