  • The rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State is perhaps the greatest in sports. But besides from the game, the rivalry goes back centuries from the events of the Toledo War. The first game was played in 1897 and they went on to play a number of classics such as the Snow Bowl, the Games of the Ten-year War with Woody Hayes & Bo Schembechler to the days of Charles Woodson to Jim Tressel to the present with Ryan Day and Jim Harbaugh.

I’ve lived in Ohio my whole life, my dad is an alum of tOSU and now I am a student there as well. A rivalry does not describe the feeling. It’s a hatred that sits for 364 days and on one Saturday at the end of November it’s released. There’s no game that means more to either team or fanbase.

You're so close to saying the quiet part. Like when Southerners say the civil war was about state's rights. In this case, it's the only game that matters because everybody else in the conference has a Big12 roster.
Anyway, "ThE gAmE" isn't a big deal to most college football fans. It's just filler until the game they care about is on.

Yea, "nobody" cares about The Game, yet it is the most watched regular season game almost every year.
Last year wasn't close; Michigan v OSU had nearly 20 million viewers whereas the second most watched game of the regular season was 11 million viewers.
      But sure, "Nobody Cares".
Let me put it another way. Which other rivalry to people (to use your words) "care" about more. If "nobody cares" about Michigan v OSU, I'm sure you can easily find another one people care more for.

Late int the 4th quarter, 8:06 to go and Michigan runs the ball down the field for a field goal, a 6 point lead, with 58 seconds left and OSU has used all of it's time outs. Then, Michigan's defense does the job once again for a second interception. Therefore, game over with 25 seconds to go and a victory formation for Michigan and a 12-0 record once again... Michigan 30 OSU 24..

    Very well put-together documentary 👏 ! I enjoyed it immensely ! 😊 🏉
A note : between 2001 and 2019, Michigan won two contests - the 2003 game along with the one mentioned in 2011. 🏉
In retrospect, the 2006 matchup is probably more noteworthy in that Schembechler passed away the night before the game. The actual game was, arguably, a made-for-tv hype contest - #1 v #2 which, yes, did provide a close, competitive, entertaining affair. Yet OSU then gets blown out by Florida in the nat'l title game and UM is routed by USC in the Rose Bowl. So ... maybe not a real matchup between the two best teams; more simply, the last two regular season undefeated schools. 🤔 🏈

I've been a OSU fan since '86, I was 12. I have family in Detroit, we never liked each other because of the rivalry. I felt disrespected when they hired Rich Rodriguez, because he changed up their identity. From that point on I wanted OSU to stomp them and get every coach fired. We would've gotten Haurbaugh fired if he wouldn't have chickened out of the '20 game. We didn't chicken out of the Snow Bowl. That gave him enough time to show how desperate he was. Enter Connor Stallion...who helped him to cheat and get consecutive wins. Those fans swear up and down it's them against the world. No, it's you against the NCAA infraction board. They have the gaul to imply we had done something wrong to try and take the eyes of the nation off of them. Once again, when we had 'tattoo gate' did you here any OSU coaches, alumi, faculty or fans mention TTUN of anything? That's how classless they are, skirt responsibility like a politician. This whole scandal has made me hate them more.

Only osu would want to play a bunch of sick kids, also Ryan day is the only coach about to be fired, funny how that comes back around. Horse crap,Army navy kids. Are Michigan and Ohio State players willing to die for the other? Difference is for 364 days a year there is that commitment to the other service. I have seen it.That one day, when there is NO OTHER F.B.S. level game on any channel, these two leadership factories try to destroy the other. On every single building on the post that is West Point the words Beat Navy are found.Every Building. They would do the same thing at navy, but they have spelling issues there.Beat Amie does not look too good. Michigan and Ohio State are just two over ratted academically state colleges. Nothing special.Big but average. There are many state schools playing football but only 3 Academy's.Just 3.E.S.P.N.talking head hands out that championship trophy. The president hands out the Commandeer In Chief trophy.HUGE DIFFERENCE! In fact except for Biden, the Commander In Chief attends the game. Then again Biden is NOt. in true command of anything. WRONG! This is NOT the greatest rivalry in College Football. At best it is #3. In 2nd place is the Iron Bowl,Alabama Auburn. Now sit down and learn kids. Number 1 is guess what? Army Navy. Do the losers in game 2 and 3 go stand in front of their fans ,sing their Alma mater, and THEN go And stand RESPECTFULLY behind the winning team as they sing their song in front of their fans? No they DO NOT! Guess who does. There are other games played when these two simple state colleges play, Army Navy is a stand alone game in top level. And sorry Blue lovers and Buckeye fans, your game is NOT seen globally in real time. The Army Navy IS! The players and every member of each academy's student body get it. And each person on the field, wearing their academy uniform in the stands, would willingly give their life for each other, for all of the rest of us. I had the huge honor during my 10 years in the Army to have been training cadre at Camp Buckner and Natural Bridge. These are summer field training exercises on post. These people are motivated by a commitment to service, not to big money pro contracts. And this rivalry is as intense in every sport, including boxing. Yes they have boxing teams,oh Army is the best.First words a cadet learns on Reception day is Beat Navy. It is somewhere on every building on the entire p;post. You say Beat navy Merry Christmas. No other college rivalry is broadcast this way.AND just 11.83 million ( real actual number) see Iron Bowl, that's all? So sorry,.Notre dame is seen by more every week.In Japan where American Football is real big,(they even have college teams) they see three teams weekly,N.D.,Navy,and Army.Iron Bowl is a nice game between two academically so so colleges from the same state. Now Kick 6 is no doubt the most rebroadcast single play ever,I give you that and will always yell WAR DAM EAGLE everytime I watch it. But child this here Army Vet has seen Americas Game in Vietnam, never saw Iron Bowl And if T V not possible,RADIO BABY!LIVE too. Two years ago Americas game hit 13.97 Mil in U.S.just on C.B.S. By the way Iron Bowl and Ohio Michigan are seen on the same day.Army Navy is a STAND ALONE GAME,where the BOSS shows up.The BIB COMMANDER, President. Understand this troop, every other game is just a game.Between future pro's who do not give a crap about education, service, sacrifice for others, they are games between teams of spoiled children.Army Navy is between Freedom Keepers, leaders, life givers and takers, liberty savers, and is 1,000 times larger.

This not the greatest rivalry. USC-Notre Dame is. Combined they have more of almost everything than Michigan-OSU. But the real reason it is the Greatest Rivalry is because it should not be one. EVERY Rivalry is based on location except this one and Army-Navy. Either its same city (USC-UCLA), same state (Alabama-Auburn) or same conference (OSU-Michigan).
USC-Notre Dame is the only rivalry that does not fit into that criteria. At least anymore. Money has destroyed CFB rivalries, but not USC-Notre Dame. And that alone would make it one of the Greatest. Add in Combined NCs, Heismans, All Americans, College and Pro Hall of Famers, and USC-Notre is the greatest rivalry.
