Excellent review from someone who is knowledgable. I've ordered a top-specked UK Iconic model (with that essential heat pump). It was a straight choice between the Renault and the Tesla Model 3 (forget the id3/MG4)........no contest! The 'sterile' boring and poorly made Tesla is now looking so dated, with the tech so 'yesterday'. By the way, the claimed 0-60 time is 7.5 sec, but motoring reviews have timed it at 6.9 sec (that's Mini Cooper S territory)........how typically French, underplaying! A brilliant touch going to the experts for the tech, Google, constantly updated.......well done Renault!
Good review. At least you get the option of the smaller battery. In England we are only getting the 60kW which means the base model with no options starts at £37k. It's a nice looking car but, like all EV's, too expensive. I'd save £6k-£10k & go for the MG4 & even that's not ideal - dark interior, no rear wiper, no sun roof option, iffy infotainment system, no rear passenger lighting or grab handles anywhere. I'm still looking for the ideal 5 door 5 seat EV hatch with a 250mile+ range for an affordable price.
Another master review Nobby. All this intensive work you do in these reviews will stand to you, in the future. Keep it up. I suddenly want a Megane Electric for Christmas! 440 litres, just about ok though.Would be hard to move from a Scala with a very comfortable 467.
Fantastic looking car in the metal. In videos and photos it looks a LOT larger than it actually is (it’s lower than a Zoe and shorter than a Focus). I have the current gen Zoe, and one huge difference is that when you sit in it, you actually sit in it as opposed to sitting on top of the battery. The interior is also far superior than it’s rivals (ID 3; MG4). The 40kwh battery might be sufficient for most people, but it’s also a lot slower than the 60kwh.
Mark. Now this may come as a surprise but this is how an electric car should be done! Design is superb! Knocks the iD3 and the like into a 'cocked hat'! Looks like a proper car. Overall excellent. Add to that the now 'benchmark' interior of Renault. Really have upped their game. As below, the 'smaller' battery should be okay for most 'around' town and weekly use. If charging network improved in UK and indeed Ireland, then would not be an issue. Back to Megane: size, shape, quality and driving dynamics make this a clear winner. Imagine what the Pug 308e will be like! The French are taking the fight to the Far East. Tesla doesn't come close. Tesla needs to be consigned to history....! Thanks again, great review.
Like your reviews Nobby. Maybe you'll get a better efficiency with a longer test. Recently tried one out and found it at least as efficient as our id3, I also regularly drive an MG5 which has almost identical consumption. For those looking to the MG4, it may be cheaper and possibly uglier (in my opinion) but efficiency wise is not as good, with an identical range, according to EV database, which I use as an unbiased accurate guide. More importantly for me is towing capacity, 900 kg RENAULT megane and 500 kg MG4.
I’d personally want the bigger battery, and I was a tad disappointed by the rear bench and space, but I can imagine the smaller battery being fine for Ireland and this probably makes more sense kept as lower spec for best value. Looks better than Ariya imo too!
Love the design of the outside of this car, easily one of the best looking EVs around but the interior distinctly lacks the edginess that the exterior looks promise.
THe rear door handle reminds me of my previous Zoe and the overall design is similar to my current ID.3 . 60Kwh would be no brainer for a 3 grand difference. 18 inch wheels would do good for the range as well. NOt sure why the front seats need a pointy end. Thank you Nobby.
It's about 200 kg lighter than ID3 so not surprised it's nippy. What's surprised me is no sunroof and no heatpump as standard or as option even on top spec in UK. I heard irish ones have Heat pump as option
I got 18kwh/100 too on a short 90 test. The leaf came back at 16.9. So it’s not great but not brutal like an suv at 20s That was the 60kwh. Showing 333 on gom.
Nice one Nobby, I saw the car up close a few weeks ago and it looks really good. Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to drive one yet, but all the reviews (including yours) sound promising. This will probably be my last test drive before making a call between this, EV6 or Polestar 2. I am interested know what you think of the car at speed as well as around town. Also a few folks remarked about the brakes feeling a little strange on occasion with the regen stepping in.
I liked the brakes, felt quite like a standard car and the bite point was fine. Different sensation to many other EVs though. Did a good bit of motorway too and it was solid.
@@NobbyOnCars super stuff, great to hear that. The colour you tested is a nice one, quite a pearlescent colour in the right light. Supposedly cars should be available for testing in the next couple of weeks, so I look forward to a decent spin then. Enjoy the weekend Nobby! 👍
Nice review Nobby. Am torn between Cupra Born and the Megane and now the MG4 has thrown a spanner in the works on value alone. Several reviewers have commented on the Megane brakes being a bit sharp especially at lower speeds. How did you find them?
Doesn't mention cost cutting for the Irish market, Battery capacity and also including the cut down Infotainment screen. Also small battery is useless I do 120K every day. Battery says 350 thats 300 summer 275 winter. Does look great though. Off my list though. Tech in these cars is No 1 priority and seeing them skimp at 40K is a disgrace.
That “A” pillar looks real thick. @ the 11:40 mark you can see how massive it is.. otherwise I wish they brought it to NA, the Ariya’s infotainment is too LEAF like, the Google system looks so much better.
Great review and the car looks great, however the battery I'd agree is too small. At the figure you quoted,18Kwh/100kM the range on a full charge would be a max of 220K with range anxiety kicking in way earlier and if you travel at the motorway speed limit for your journey the reasonable range you could expect to get would be between 150 and 170K.
@@NobbyOnCars like a tesla M3 SR at 110kmh on the motorway and you are at 14 kwh/100km - you can hammer it at 130kmh and you would still get 18. Can't understand how this could be so inefficient compared especially with a smaller battery. When i first heard of the E-Tech i heard it was ultra efficient, which it's not by your spin.
Why is 300 miles considered as longe range? A diesel easily does 600 miles per tank and don’t forget the massive refuelling time of 4 minutes! The Megane is a beautiful car but way too expensive and a range 300 miles too short. The door handles do not pop out in icy weather as unlike Range Rover they aren’t heated! Boots are deeper as manufacturers refuse to fit a spare wheel. These cars are not the future as no home in Ireland or UK can have a good charge point and, most importantly, neither country can actually produce enough electricity to power chargers if all car were electric. Hydrogen is the only way forward and before everyone says you can’t buy it, if the manufactures made the cars, the refuelling station would appear,

Massive battery , 40 kWh battery much to small for this size of car at this point in ev development. Zoe has 52 kWh and does from 150 to 200+. 60 kWh should be the minimum level . Putting charge port in the side stupid . Front like zoe should be the way forward. 130 kW charging should be standard. As mg4 just coming on the market likely will blow the European vw, seat , Renault away for range , battery size , value for money.
