Hi! Big Fan. Few clarifications because I had to go a bit deeper to find out what exactly Adobe thinks those sliders do: First, a tip: if you CTRL click and drag the dropper you sample a 5x5 area instead of a single pixel for your key, you should always do this as your chroma key isn't just one value. Second, what you say about the matte generation sliders isn't accurate ... from the Adobe site: Matte Generation controls help refine transparent areas: Transparency: Adjusts transparency of the source image when keyed over a background. 100 is fully transparent, and 0 is fully opaque. Highlight: Adjusts opacity of the light areas in the source image. Shadow: Adjusts opacity of the dark areas of the source image. Tolerance: Adjusts the range of colors selected. Pedestal: Filters out noise from the alpha channel and can improve the key when working with low light footage. Frankly, Ultrakey is great but not very conventional when it comes to keyers (if you have used Keylight in AE the sliders make a bit more sense) and to get a solid key that doesn't have a ton of noise can be an issue if you dont know how to use (or not use) the sliders.
The term pedestal comes from the early days of television and the NTSC signal. Without getting into a deep technical discussion, when adjusting the TV signal using a waveform monitor, the signal ranges from -40 to 100 in units of IRE. 0 being black and 100 being white. There is much more that goes into this of course and you can look it up should you be interested. 0 was referred to as SUPER BLACK but setting the video signal to 0 created problems and to fix this they would raise the black level to 7.5 IRE (indicated by a dotted line on the reticule of the waveform display). This point at 7.5 IRE become known as PEDESTAL or even to some as SETUP. That's a very basic nerdy answer. But knowing this may help as you realize what that setting does when you use chroma key.
Steve Beydler you're welcome at any of my parties, anytime. I appreciate those who share their knowledge and find them to be the most interesting people.
Hello. I have a problem when using the color selector for coloring when in "Luminetry color" menu. It takes the color on the opposite side of a color wheel. For example if I want red I need to click in blue and it goes on for every color. Any solution please because it's driving me crazy. Than you so much for your very well explained tutorials.
Extremely helpful and clear, thank you so much! Maybe it's called pedestal maybe because there's this kind of effect going on with the levels of some image parameter: /''''''\ Complete guess though
Hey Luis - I made this tutorial before I owned a green screen now I do. Haven't had a chance to do another one on Ultra Key. But I made a tutorial recently on an awesome plugin called Continuum Primatte Studio, which works in Premiere and After Effects. It works great, here is my tutorial which uses a person with hair on a green screen backdrop: ruclips.net/video/mfMX3py5ItY/видео.html
Thanks so much for responding so quickly. I'll check out the video you suggest. I have Primatte Keyer NOT Studio... will play around with what I have to see if it's any different from Studio. Thanks again.
hi cathy - my friends over at fayteq are currently working on a plugin called fayOUT that will let you do this with ease - otherwise I'm afraid it would require masking and layering duplicate clips. The product is not released yet, but you can see it here and sign up for updates > www.fayteq.com/fayout/

Steve Beydler thanks! Very interesting to know the history of the term from a technical view.

Excellent tutorial. The other one I watched on Ultra Key taught me the 'how to' but yours included the 'why' which makes it that much better.
Thanks, Ryan!
