So how about Mercury?
You could try freezing the Gallium in and small crust of water, and see if the ice will let it keep its shape as it compresses
you know how soft drink cans slightly expand when they get shaken.. what happens if one is in resin and then put onto a paint shaker? will it crack the resin with expansion, will it expand at all?
What is the name of that tune at5:50? I looked for it RUclips music samples but no luck. Answered thanks
I think you could make a cool multi layered with the gallium
Carve a shape into a solid chunk of resin then fill that shape with gallium. The pour more resin over the top.
It'd either have to be Rooster or possibly Eiffel Tower shaped being that it's equally named for Gaul and the common chicken (Gallus Gallus).

And add a tiny bit of colored water. That will make the flowing more visible and have one side of the gallium free from (not sticking to) the resin. 🤓
Or put the gallium in a Little box then do what you said
@@BensWorx or you could put something in the middle of the resin while it cures, like half of a plastic egg with weight in it or a ping-pong ball with a skewer in one side of it sort of cut and taped level with the top of the cup to keep it half submerged
If your pressure pot is made of Aluminium be careful with Gallium around it. Gallium will leech into Aluminium and weaken it. Even just touching it with some on your hands can cause this effect. You don't want a weak pressure pot.

@@ChiseledDiamond I don't believe that it is entirely illegal necessarily, but there are obviously restrictions for how much and what it can be stored in. When stored in a proper container, it shouldn't be a problem because it can't come into contact with the metal that the aircraft is made out of.
This is only true when the oxide layer of Aluminium is gone
@@bababoule66 Yep, I tested it out on a pull tab from a soda can, I needed to scratch it under the gallium before anything would happen.

Dying in a dishwasher would be an awful way to go. You're locked in a tiny space, with low amount of oxygen, being sprayed by scalding hot water, being slowly cooked while being unable to easily breathe due to the heavy, humid and hot air. Even worse if it has a heating element as your skin will be in contact with it, scorching you without end. What a painful, slow and morbid way to die... I just checked, there has been at least one confirmed case of a person that died from climbing into a dishwasher. A woman climbed into a dishwasher to commit suicide, the cause of death was scalding and asphyxiation. More common cases of death by dishwasher are actually when someone falls on knives that were placed in dishwasher, now those are pretty common.

@@THESLlCK Don't ask me, ask the people who are so desperate to get Darwin's award. I merely looked up info relating to dishwasher deaths and fished out only true and confirmed cases and to my amazement, there's way too many dishwasher related deaths and injuries, and as we all know those which you can find info on on the internet are in minority, meaning the numbers are probably way higher in terms of dishwasher related injuries, at least the minor ones.
Fun fact about Gallium... in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Gallium was used for the scene where he shattered the T-1000 after it was soaked in liquid nitrogen then started to reform. The part where the heat from the mill melted the frozen parts of the T1000 was Gallium under a heat lamp.

Another fun fact is that Robert Patrick improvised the moment when the T-1000 walked through the bars in the jail. The door was supposed to be open, but the actor surprised the cast and crew by melting his body into liquid gallium, and walking through the bars.
WillysLhead134 that’s crazy, I knew Robert Patrick to be a very dedicated actor but to turn himself into gallium and then melt is insane!

Cast the chunks in UV resin first, THEN cast those in regular resin. That way when the gallium melts, the metal stays in the UV resin shells instead of pooling at the bottom. I dunno if that'll work, but it would make an awesome experiment!!

You should take that burn spot and make a sphere out of it. I think that would look really cool. Maybe you could do more tests with the microwave using different colors.

@@BensWorx The burn sport was kind of predictable, as that might have been a spot in the resin that hadn't fully cured yet, and it was soft enough that the molecules reacted to being jostled by the microwave. It might be something to try re-creating again.

the round shape of the resin might have made it act like a lens and that's what caused the burn mark, Idk just guessing

You know that part of a scary movie when you are sure the jump is coming. You are staring hard because you know something is going to happen. Sure it looks innocuous, but you know better. That's what pot cam is like. Love your videos!

Do it the same way you did the ice. Wait until it was very thick. Then push the gallium in. Pouring the resin over it encased it.
The problem is gallume is very heavy compared to ice
OMG. Gallium pretty much close Mercury. Can't wait for the mercury video if you are making one.
Mercury is poisonous though, much more dangerous to handle than Gallium. And the fumes from heated Mercury are ALSO dangerous to breathe. It SOUNDS cool and all, but I honestly don't think it's worth the risk, especially since it will just react the same as melted Gallium does.
The Mad Hatter was based on REAL hatters that went mad from exposure to Mercury used in the hat making process. NO BUENO!

@@HarnaiDigital I don't know how it would react. But if it flowed to the edge of the resin like the melted Gallium did, it COULD be problematic.
Mercury is reletively safe in its non-diluted liquid form. They are definitely right about the heat, and fumes not being worth it :(. Cody's Lab explains a lot about mercury on his channel. Something cool to check out while waiting on the next Vid from Ben :)
The coolest! The burn mark concerns me, though. Be careful that you don’t release any volatile gasses in the micro wave. Cool, though!

this gives me ideas! I watched a video where they cast a mold inside another mold with resin - essentially creating a void to make snow globes. Make a smaller version for a pendant with gallium inside it :D

A nice idea could be to turn the burnt spot on the resin, i think it could become a nice sphere with an amazing efect.

Also gallume makes really cool weird tendril type things when you add it to aluminum you could cast a small aluminum plate into the first pour then shine it up put the gallume on it and pour the second and see if they grow and get preserved by the resin

If you wanted to try this again, you could cast the bottom first, then cast some walls around the edge before putting the gallium in. That way, you have a barrier to keep the gallium from puddling all the way out to the edges, and could turn the thing afterwards if you wanted to. Oh, really cool (but a lot of work) would be to do multiple layers of resin, each one with a randomly melted shape of gallium.

I’m fascinated with that burn mark. It reminds me of a tiny sun. It would be interesting to see if you can replicate that effect and incorporate it into one of your eggs. Great viddy Ben!

The burn is caused by the standing wave in the microwave.
gallium has some pretty high surface tension so that's probably why it didn't flow out. also it's ever so slightly more dense as a solid than a liquid (as opposed to water) so there wouldn't be any room for it to flow inside the resin!
The burnspot could be made into a keychain, necklace or simply a cool small globe!
an egg/sphere with that burn mark in the middle could look really cool

If you poured resin in the cup at an angle three times, you’d end up with a pyramidal base. Then the gallium would take that shape when it melts
I actually love the little puddles of gallium suspended in that mold, even more with the little burn mark above. That would make a cool egg, or sphere!
Gallium is amazing stuff!! I was thinking so making some earrings in a mould with it then I thought “der ... it will melt in the ears”!! What a nitwit I am!!

The burn Mark is from the microwave. Gallium will melt, but it also has some pretty high surface tension so it won’t exactly flow.

Congrats to Dennis 66 I was expecting that with the Gallium but not for it just to sit there after you put it in the microwave an heated it up! I was expecting a puddle on the microwave dish as that is normally what happens with molten metal (I should know I melt metal for a living and had a few crucibles fail on me! 🤦♂️) Keep up the good work and I will see you on the next Project.

could you try freezing the gallium before putting it in resin. Gallium expands when cooled so you should get flow in a slightly larger cavity. awesome work please keep it up.
It would be awesome to see you revisit this and do it in layers try to sculpt a tree or something with the gallium and resin!
Idea for videos:
1. Make cooking tools out of resin and try to make a omlette with them. A knife, a fork, a spoon and the other stuff, and lets see how useful they turn out to be.
2. cast paper into resin and see if the paper is affected if you throw the block of resin into fire
3. make a labrinth tunnel system out of resin with enough space to put water and small fishes into them and see how crazy one can cut one piece of resin, or instead of fish, make it for the size of a small mouse and have him try to find cheese in that labrinth

You could take a figure and pace a chunk of gallium on top and get a shot of it melting onto it in the resin!

9:40 its the vacum rule, like dipping a straw in liquid sealing the open end and pulling it out. the lack of equal pressure is causing it to be pushed in by the outside gas
i think if you can keep that in the center it would look really cool turned and polished.
Be cool if you could suspend something ike a top in resin but have swirling lines around it. Childs spinning top toy. Not sure what theyre called down under or by the British.
Hey, Ben, thanks for the excellent content! Interesting video and it spawns an idea for another resin experiment and a video. We really enjoy when you try new stuff and we do some resin casting ourselves and you have taught us much! It looks like the microwave possibly heated the resin block starting from the middle! What if you cast a block with several old style mercury thermometers with the bases at different points. The potcam would be extremely interesting and you could put that into the microwave and test the idea that the block heats from the middle first. Just a crazy idea and, if I understand how your job works, a big part of it is merely thinking of stuff that would be interesting to watch. If you use this idea, how cool is that, if not it's an idea for your idea bin. Keep up the good work!

That's really a nice clear resin. Maybe put it on the lathe while the gallium is melted; the cetrifugal force should fling it out!
I think the back pressure won't let it flow out. Very cool though. You should definitely do something on the lathe with it. I'd also like to soo you do something with burnt spot, that would be cool. Like maybe a sphere with that spot in the middle like the sun.
Now that I think of it, a solar system would be a cool project. Very time consuming tho lol

Could you perhaps make a first layer of resin with a bowl shape, fill that with gallium and some heavy (heavier than resin) transparent liquid (mineral oil, perhaps?), then cover that with resin? Once cured: cool coaster and fidget toy!
You should also try cleaning the metal! Impurities tend to float to the surface, making it look dirty, but can be relatively easily scooped off. Once clean, it should look like a T1000! :D
Another idea, perhaps try this with a ferrofluid, or casting a ferrofluid formation as a mold?

That was really cool! The melted gallium reminds me of mercury.
For filming the inside of a microwave, you can do camera tricks, or another way is drill a hole smaller than 6cm in diameter and use a cell phone camera to film. Steve Mould details these in his "How to film the inside of a microwave" video

I think you should think about putting the set up in a bucket full of ice while it heats up. I think it would give de galium a more interesting shape. 😉
Bit of a thought; what if you just made a big cuppa resin and stuck it in the microwave for a really long time? It could be interesting to see either how much you could burn or if it eventually loses integrity. Keep up the good work!
Cast a cup of clear resin and put it in the microwave for various times and see what kind of burn patterns you get. Also try it from different places on the plate rather than center!!
Unlike Water/ice (which really is the exception) Gallium have a higher density at lower temperatures (as when it is solid), and lower density at higher temperature. So it will expand, slightly, as it warms up and melts. The difference might not be very noticeable between "room temperature" and 30C.
So, in the cast in would leave a (tiny?) air gap when it's solid, but when it gets warmer and melts it will take up the entire "void" in the cast, so it can't slosh around. But if it the cast was done with a bigger void than the volume of the Gallium it should work.
Interesting experiment though, and great video!
I was surprised that it didn't spark in the microwave.....but maybe that's why it burned instead?🤔🤔🤔 Loved the experiment! Have you ever tried those big milkweed in resin? They look like dried dandelions when they go to seed....just jumbo sized!🌼🌼🌼 Or spiders webs🕸🕷🕸?
