Im not gonna lie, what brings me back is just the audio engineering the devs did for ED. Ill burn some time listening to a new album while listening to the sweet reverbs and synthesizing of events in space every so often. I saw the other day that VR was only done in Elite because one of the original devs was a VR enthusiast, and he did it all in his own spare time. VR stopped being developed in Elite simply because that one single dev left the company, and no-one else knew what (or how) to do anything with it... and of course, FDev didn't bother getting a proper VR dev in to get all up and running in Odyssey. First login today in 4 years after spending 618hrs ingame. Had got Horizons, bought a fleet carrier, did the Low Temp Diamond/ overlapping hotspot mining subgame for a month or so then parked everything as the whole thing got so monotonous. Now back and has anything really changed ? Certainly doesn't seem it apart from the LTDs being decimated. I've read that surface Platinum mining is now the go-to and trying it today, I'm certainly no where near 150m creds/hour as advertised. And if Yamiks is right about player numbers, this only confirms my fears.
What are the chances of Elite: Dangerous solo play being modified to be able to play offline ? At least that way, if Frontier and their servers do go belly up, the game can continue.

Even the Powerplay Overhaul isn't new. Sandro Sammarco was gathering ideas for it back in circa 2017-2018 before he left the Elite Dev team. So, who knows? the Powerplay stuff they've sat on for years now.
Engineers needs doing way more than Powerplay. And they NEED to re-look at the offline Client and get that rolling again (as it was an original Kickstarter promise) and then open it up to mods, and let the community work on it instead. Been saying this now for YEARS.

Probably due to familiarity, but nobody ever mentions how awkward and burdensome the new player experience is in ED. More than once I've heard gamer youtubers say "I tried it but applied for a steam refund". That's people who are experienced with games and bought a game saying "the new player experience does not give me enough reason to keep playing it within my reasonable time frame".
Two of my biggest issues there are the massive brick wall of the control setup to even start flying, and the lack of information for where to find systems / stations / factions for doing anything at all throughout the game. If your players need third-party tools to be able to *find the gameplay in your game*, that's a really big sign as to where to focus your improvement efforts.

    • @EinonY

People used to mention it, but since they improved the in game tutorials, people just started to talk about it less frequently. I started playing when it was released on ps4, and at the time, the tutorial was basically a handful of 5min missions with the bare minimum, plus a few links to youtube videos, all started from the main menu. No in depth explanations, no noob restricted star systems, no anything else.Took me hours of gameplay and trial and error to understand stuff that is pretty much basics and core elements, like ship modules for example.

One thing, one little idea, that could add some interesting new fun to the game is the ability to COLONIZE star systems and planets!!!! It would give a meaningful reason to EXPLORE, MINE for resources, and have COMBAT ships to defend it. Find a star system with an ELW, explore it for resources. Explore neighboring systems for resources. Build a station in orbit on the ELW. Use it as a base of operations. Build a "city" on the ELW. If Thargoids or pirates show up, combat players can defend it. Your gameplay would actually matter in the universe, instead of a stupid virtual commodity market that has no tangible consequences. Shit, they could even toss in a new alien civilization that could either be an ally to humanity or another antagonist! Hey, maybe create some nomadic android civilization that was left behind by their creators due to some great cataclysm the wiped them out?
Players could literally build a new bubble in another part of the galaxy few have ever ventured to.

@@silo_olisWhat I'm talking about is migrating to an unsettled star system and mining resources to build new civilizations, not take control of existing stations. Here's the idea, an FC brings a fleet of exploration and mining ships to a remote region to find mining resources and ELW's to settle. You mine for resources that are used to build stations and cities that don't yet exist there. Space truckers bring in goods like food and medicine until the star system becomes self-sufficient. Passenger ships haul in NPC workers. Pilots explore, mine, defend, and build new civilizations that didn't exist before.

Interesting idea. Guardian generation ships that avoided Skynet's destruction of the species. According to lore the Guardians were a lot like humanity in how they evolved and how their society was structured. Them being enemies to the Thargoids gives them the perfect reason to become allies with humanity when rediscovered. You could hire Guardian crew, buy Guardian ships, buy Guardian suits (if they're THAT close to humanity) and weapons, trade resources between humans and Guardians... fuck I just created X4: Foundations without the automatic player economy. Perhaps they would be very far away from the bubble, not too far but maybe 2,500 ly or so, just to encourage combat mains to explore a little bit and to engineer long range ships, just like new weapons and new ships alongside a bit of a profitability increase would encourage people who hate combat to maybe give it a shot.

hel i say this as someone who only really likes NMS because of the side-track distractions and the RNG timing "expedition" live-events. tho i do need to try the atlas path main/original quest again now the recent update "changed" it.

Easy fixes that can be accomplished by the devs in an afternoon and will make this game a lot better:
    - either reduce grinding for materials and guardian modules by at least 75-90% or make engineering way less important to actually play late game content, otherwise there will never be new players
    - power play only in open
    - power play modules unlocked forever once you first earn them
    - double the jump range of everything
    - native index tool with eddb/inara functionalities
    - remove carrier upkeep, even if initial purchase price goes up
    - cut the "sponginess" of FPS targets by at least half
    - remove asp scout
Harder things to implement but that we really need on the game
    - at least 2 new ships per year
    - ship interiors
    - base building
    - remove solo play. Only open play, but with a pvp flag for who wants to engage in pvp. No flag, no interdiction.
    - make it so player groups cannot influence NPC factions out of existence, thereby making ot impossible for newer players to earn certain system permits

all i wanted was a fun and engaging space-game i could fight my way through and have an excuse to move around within looking for interesting things.
Now all i can see is that simply staying in one place in the bubble next to an RES area resetting the instance is the ENTIRE combat gameplay other than the thargoid fights that mandate ONE specific playstyle, 3-4 specific builds/fits and don't seem to provide any meaningful reward beyond simply existing.
Oh and to get those fits/builds you needed to engage with the RNG "resource farming" system and RNG output engineering, and the toiling of getting thousands of the right kind of trade-good (handed out by the ten) to faction grind your way into access to the engineers.
At which point i walked away hoping for something to change (it didn't), and eventually installed a myriad of other games instead (including NMS and warframe that despite being focussed on walking-sim/third-person-horde-shooting respectively have way BETTER flight and combat encounters, tho not quite flight mechanics than ED ever has). That NMS can throw in a generic "capital ship fight" and it outperforms ED with it's way more detailed systems is damning, I just wisht he WF community hadn't over-farmed then rejected the railjack system so hard (as a solo/duo player with 2+Ai crew gun/engi it's a fun experience, HORRIBLE with 3-4 players/randoms tho) as the potential for alternate ships/builds/encounters was huge.

and unfortunately, unlike with X4, the RNG based engineering can't be modded out because it's online only. I doubt it will happen but hopefully with their dying breath, Frontier makes ED an offline game, even if it doubles the filesize (meaning it would rival RDR2 in just how much space it takes up on your PC). This would enable a whole new world of shenanigans with mods and cheats and third party programs to make it as much of a sandbox as it is a simulator. Also, exchange arx for ingame credits since I feel like very few players actually use the ship cosmetics due to either having to buy them or having to grind for months to build up enough arx to get even one cosmetic pack. Hell it took me three weeks just to get a fucking paint job for my anaconda.

new player here, dove into ED a couple of months ago, and 180 hours of gameplay later, I'm really loving it. the exploration, ship building, economy, and spaceship flying/combat are unmatched within current space games imo (aint counting Star Citizen, it aint finished).
it achieves nearly everything I wanted from it. I came off of playing no mans sky, and therefore I wasn't needing or expecting the level of on planet exploration or base building that game had. No Mans Sky lives within a much more vast universe that goes for a fantasy setting. ED works perfectly as a more realistic space sim game, I don't need massive generated earth like worlds or city building to enjoy this game.
I'm hopeful for the future of the game even despite its age. I'm super excited for the power play update. power play was one of the elements that originally stood out to me from ED from afar, but I was disappointed by how little its implemented in the actual game. hopefully it becomes more of a factor and drives PvP and gives an actual reason to pledge/work for a faction.
Also if the base building thing is true, that's hype for me. I'm an explorer, and the idea of going into the black and being able to build an actual home base/outpost is really fuckin cool.

  • @rodrirm

    Base building?, like for real?
I still can't walk inside my ship, heck I can't not even watch the back of the cabin if I don't use the free camera.... and they are working on base buildings?, what for?
Are we even going to be able to go inside? (I really don't care), Why would I want a planetary base of my own?, I usually avoid them because of the time it takes to land on them?
Most people playing Elite are grown ups, we don't have time to waste, we want space combat, different trading experiences, mining, etc.
I play ETS2, I try to spend the smallest time I can inside my garage and the more time I can driving my truck, Who cares about base building?
I hope they really get us new ships to the game, its been a while, and hope they are not just copy paste of the old ones with one more or less hardpoint. After all this years, dissapointing players on this last point would really be the dead of Elite Dangerous. Cheers!

The saddest thing about Elite Dangerous is that we will never get full atmospheric worlds with dinosaurs and such that I seem to remember them talking about waaaayyyyy back when. I guess the best I'll get is the cartoon version (no man's sky). Still enjoyed hundreds of hours of what we got. Nothing beats demolishing things in a Python/Corvette, and then getting lost in the stars after grinding thousands of passenger missions/space trucking/mining.

Yeah. I remember Braben saying about how fleshed out the earth-like worlds were gonna be, you could be a big game hunter and even earn a reputation as such!
.. And now we're 10 years into the games lifecycle and you can still only land on planets slightly more lifelike than our moon. Everything in Elite: Dangerous honestly felt so groundbreaking at the time that felt reasonable if they kept up the pace. This game will always hold a special place in my heart because of what it achieved but it will always be bittersweet because of the things that were NOT achieved. It will always be a huge step forward in the 'Space-sim' (Sim-Lite?) genre though, and I'm hopeful new cool stuff will continue getting developed until we inch ever closer to that sweet, sweet, full fidelity immersive space sim universe with ACTUALLY no limits. That'll be a day to be a space fan!

Still a very accurate description of the current situation Yam.

    • @_Jay_Maker_
      @_Jay_Maker_ 8 месяцев назад

That's still a grind, though. You still have to go fuck-all out of your way to get the resources you need in order to upgrade your ship with the Engineers, and then you have to do it over and over again for each part you want to Engineer. Instead of... you know... just being able to buy all of the shit you need off of the market, like you should be able to in what is this future sci-fi universe that's literally full of every resource imaginable. I don't have to go out into the desert and blast rocks in real life if I want to improve my Sedan. Why do I have to do that to improve a space ship in the future?
The grind isn't a choice when the only way to progress your ship's advancement is a grind by its very nature and design. Which it is. The _worst_ thing is, it wasn't always like this! Letter-grading ship parts was a much cleaner and more understandable way of ship upgrades, but then they had to go ahead and fuck it all up by adding this absolutely batshit granularity that was The Engineers. instead of keeping it simple and branching out from there, they added this impossible-to-balance complexity and turned it into an absolute chore. Typical Frontier.

    • @TheYamiks
      @TheYamiks  8 месяцев назад +1

saying that "grind is a choice" is downright stupid.
If you consider "not progressing" in a game as valid, acceptable option/choice then I fear to think what you consider even mildly bad?!
you do realize that you are willingly ignoring the game structure..that the game is built to throw at you countless easy/unchallenging, but extremely time consuming tasks for you/your ship/what ever to progress/improve. Grind is not challenging nor is it beneficial in ANY kind of capacity, so defending it with "well it doesn't feel like it's that bad" or "bro, it's just a choice" is attempting to excuse objectively bad progression systems with your "feeeeeewings".

      @Cohen.the.Worrier 8 месяцев назад

@@TheYamiks You calling me stupid boy? Care to step outside and repeat that? 🧐
But seriously, let me give you an example. You don't _need_ the longest jumping ship if you want to explore. Just get the pre-engineered FSD and slap it in your Phantom. But your neighbours fully pimped out Anaconda jumps 5 ly further?
Who gives a flying rats ass? As he's filing all his components to make them super light and fragile, you could be half way across the galaxy in your off the shelf Phantom.
There's the grind and nearly all the content creators show you how to do it, then complain about the grind.
Or you can play the game, have fun and progress a bit slower. After all “It's not the destination, it's the journey.”

I think they mean because it doesn't work in Odyssey on-foot. All you get is like a giant monitor to look at in VR, not you being in a VR world.
I saw a video the other day that explained why it's like this now. It turns out that VR was only added to Elite in the first place because one of the devs was a VR enthusiast, and he did it all in his own spare time. The only reason it wasn't added to Odyssey is because he left the company before Ody was made. And of course, FDev didn't bother getting a replacement dev to do anything with the VR side of the game, so they just left it as is.

Because the player base convinced themselves it was an actual supported feature they were maintaining. It actually was merely enabled and worked fine for a very long time, but the performance requirements of odyssey content made VR unfeasible in those areas. They are calling it dead because it doesn't work for the full game(although you dont have to interact with odyssey content so it doesn't really matter).

After a few hundred hours and billions of credits, plus most but not all engineering done; I just come back in for a day or two every year or so to see what's new. The Thargoid conflict was interesting for awhile, but after killing hundreds of them in base defense; rescuing refugees by the thousands; and providing thousands of tons of emergency supplies, it gets old like everything else in-game. Nothing related to the titans themselves caught my interest since there was so little to do there for so long with "minimal consequences' to the conflict outcome! Including what was just released today for some group combat on the Titan itself. With such a solid base game, (Better than almost all other space games for ship control/ship combat/mining/shipping/passenger transport/exploration/planet landing mechanics; but sadly not on atmospheric planets which was a huge miss-step among many) it's a shame they squandered its long term potential. We needed reasons to come back, (Not just capitol ship maintenance costs, LOL) like every 6 months to add some detailed story arc related to the factions that had you chasing a mystery around the bubble or farther out in the black; with tangible rewards like special gear or a special ship as an end reward. Or something more like Eve where player organizations could carve out a foothold in a certain regions on the edge of the bubble. As an explorer, the dev's could of created numerous large trigger zones so as you go out in the black and run into a zone: an alien race region/weird signal is detected/or finding a lost/stranded expedition and a series of missions commences from that. Galnet messages could be received of the discoveries so other players could experience the same content. So much potential, wasted away year after empty year! The original passionate and creative dev's that made such a great base game literally handed the reigns over to a bunch of lazy corporate employees with no creative abilities or drive whatsoever!

That is to say, because the players can *SUSPEND THEIR DISBELIEF* it is immersive, *But* once that suspension of disbelief stops, pal, that's the end of the immersion too. For starters, I cannot imagine that what I'm flying in ED is a Ship any longer, because I know the cockpit is actually a HUD and my "spaceship" is actually just fighting in a FPS, without any ground to walk or bunny hop over. In other words, ED is no better than Descent, at the end of the day, especially if the VR goes from excellent to busted / removed.

I think they shot themselves in the foot by adding FPS content. They should have just expanded on the ship combat by progressing towards EVE(larger scale). If they gave you the ability to own larger ships, which could have smaller AI ships slaved to them, they could have expanded the scope of battles. Doing so, all of these alien encounters could have been massive and immersive fleet battles instead of the boring DPS check that they are now. That way, you would have something to grind towards. Eventually, they could have expanded it to have ownable PVP territories, the same way EVE does.
At this point, I don't expect this game to outcompete Star Citizen. If they focused on one thing and made it really good, they might have been able to.

i just recently came back to do a little space trucking. I was midway through a trip to Colonia so now I'm there. When I got there, non-stop 50 mill bertrandite missions. I thought "hell yeah thats why I was coming back out here" but then the missions either dried up or someone is taking all of them.

I got it for the VR experience (or really, I got VR specifically to try it in Elite) but dropped it cold over the simultaneous introduction of space legs and FDev's bafflingly poor handling of the """slaver""" controversy.
Oddly satisfied that I left a sinking ship.

I follow the financial markets as part of what I do and I've seen this before. First they lay off as many staff as possible to cut costs and increase what little profit margin they have. Now they're adding these 'new' features which are low effort leftovers which they can enable with the few developers they have left. Why? It's one of the last games they have with any kind of reliable player base. All this to eek out the last bit of profit to make the company more attractive to potential buyers. I would bet you'll see the remaining assets of Frontier up for sale within a couple of years.

Thanks, this answered most of my questions, looking back from the odyssey launch. Except, does Odyssey planet tech still look like a stack of books under a blanket?
Also I assume that not mentioning fixing multi-crew means it still isnt viable.

Its a great game, Im still enjoying playing it, smashing thargs, watching a titan get obliterated, its all good. As you say, you can just fly around and pew, mine, truck, you dont need to grind the engineering to play.

Balanced Video, Yamiks, They should really have Stuck to ships as they were very very good at this, apart from the engineering Grind, but ships and ship fighting was far better than SC and I play that a lot...roughly 16500hrs in Elite over the years. I personally gave up 3 years ago. I believe it was the Carrier (cost/time) update that ruined it for me.

    • @jasonking5405
      @jasonking5405 8 месяцев назад

The only 'hard' thing about carriers now, is the initial 5 billion cost. Running costs are so easy to get these days that they are literally insignificant now. I can get my weekly upkeep simply by doing just one high intensity on-foot conflict zone, and have cash to spare. Granted, my carrier only has rearm/refuel/repair installed, so a weekly cost of 9.5 million, but a 20 minute CZ easily gets me that, and about 100-120 Arx at the same time. Four of them will easily cap my weekly Arx, and net me anywhere between 40-60 million, all in less than a couple of hours.

Ever since the Great Disjunction (We will live Forever...in Legacy) left me behind...
... apparently 21st century retailers don't accept the Warm Fuzzys i get paid in as Valid Curreny...
... I've had issues with maintaining my persona. Especially given that BGS manipulation was the thing that actually hooked me.
(I singlehandedly spread my Best Faction Friend to 20 systems and even negotiated it's survival when the Blue Wings of everyone's favorite Mystic Anime Space Princess swept through my neighborhood)
The recent announcement of new ships is Even Worse. Why?
I deliberately chose to be a 34th century SnakeShip Salesman & Not a 21st century SnakeCoin Salesman for a reason (yes i could have made a killing fleecing rubes with Brooklyn Bridge NFTs and such), that being that much like the Sleek Brick-like Styling of the Keelback i come equipped with Morals and a soul 😇.
The thought that my Insane Ravings might cause some poor kid to spend Real World money on a (poorly optimized apparently) PTW ShipFriend fills me with dread.
I will probably drop my "So long & thanks for all the Fish" post this Kraitsmas season for those Poor Unfortunate Souls who seem to like me. I owe them that much for sure.

What really got me to quit the game was the fact that when engaging with the BGS (minor faction systems and such) players that play solo mode can affect what you are doing, even against you, and there is nothing you can do about it. It was especially bad for me and my group of friends since we got our own minor faction to manage and were undermined by "solo" players. While things like this dont change our group wont be coming back to play, sadly.

I'm so tossed up on Elite. I love it and it's one of my favorite space games. Even though I've invested real money in Star Citizen, I still think Elite is the better "space Sim".
But I don't have a lot of time in it, maybe a couple of hundred hours, and engineering grind is killer for those busy with jobs and family.
I really want to come back but I feel like I may end up putting in time for nothing if they shut down in the next year or two.
