This channel is underrated as fuck. I know there are way more than 50k metalheads out there, and we should all be here at this channel. Also does anyone know if the charts/lists they make get posted anywhere else? It'd be nice to be able to see these lists somewhere (like on their site) so we don't have to come back to the video and skip around to find stuff.
Thanks Lucas! We post a photo of the updated charts on our Facebook page after each show. And will be relaunching BangerTV.com this fall so you can find all that in one place.
Sam Dunce lost ALL credibility when he brought up sexism in metal. Women are MORE than welcome in the metal community and Sam's canadian style shitpost of a Sexism in metal talk only proves that he is turning into an SJW by even entertaining that garbage of a topic. There is no sexism in metal, there are metalheads and posers, and the posers who try to get in are rightfully kicked the fuck out, whether they have a cock or a cunt.
it's not in the metal heads... sexism occurs when a male metalhead makes a crack that eludes to the female gender & how he doesn;t think that she belongs in metal at all..
Hall Of The Mountain King has the elements, surely. Classical leanings in structures, references and Criss Oliva's shred. The title track has the tempo and time changes of early prog metal, as well as 24 Hours Ago. The high soaring vocals. The production values. A landmark album in terms of American contribution to the genre.
I agree. I think some of the special guests on Banger have deemed Rhapsody more of a "Symphonic" type of metal band than a "Power Metal" band. Problem is the "Symphonic Metal" genre is really small and doesn't give Rhapsody their due recognition (Idk maybe that should a new lock horns down the road). If you took all the orchestral stuff out it would be straight up power metal imo.
Dragonforce doesn't add nothing new to the genre. It only does faster, with more notes and exaggeration. It's not good, well written music. Rhapsody brought something fresh with their sound, combining classical music with power metal in a way no one did before.
I had a lot of fun yesterday watching the show and chatting with cool people from all over the world, a big thank you to that one guy who kept plugging Viper from Brazil : I checked them out and now I just ordered their first two records 'cuz they're great !
loved the show as per usual! I just want to give my own shout out for a group I've always found criminally underrated, Nocturnal Rites!!!! I've loved them for years and while they embodied so many unique power metal qualities in their back catalog, I feel it all paid off with their final output: 2008s "the 8th sin". Neo classical, folk, powerful instrumentation, infectious chants, symphonic elements, and the best ballad I've ever heard with the song *me* . I am a proud fan of this band and I urge anyone with a curiosity of this genre to check them out! especially their album *the 8th sin*
Nocturnal Rites is one of my favorite bands, but I prefer their 3 first albums, with singer Anders Zackrisson: In a time of blood and fire, Tales of mystery and imagination and The sacred talisman. I like Afterlife too.
There's no comparison between Edguy and Dragonforce, both music-wise and overall quality-wise... Seriously, you find "Mandrake" boring?! Don't forget that Tobias Sammet released the first Edguy album before he even turned 18 (!) and is the creative mastermind behind the first two Avantasia albums, two real gems of an album. Besides, what's your prob with good production values and good quality/fidelity sound? We're not talking some garage or 'true' BM stuff here... The above said, I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding Primal Fear, Blind Guardian and SymphX...
Fabio B.M. what would you say in this fabio? Uriah heep 's lps Demons& Wizards , MAgician's birthday& sweet freedom as essential proto power metal Lps?
Stratovarius-visions//rhapsody-symphony of enchanted lands//hammerfall-legacy of kings//labyrinth-return to heaven denied and by the way, the last two dragonforce albums are better than all their discography
I believe Helloween's Walls of Jericho album is by far the most essential power metal album. Ingo's drumming on that album set a new standard for power metal drummers, with the constant double bass on the majority of the tracks.
While I agree Helloween's Walls of Jericho is a true masterpiece, it was more a thrash metal album. It misses several of the trademarks of power metal.
I'm a bit of a Virgin Steele super fan, so it was disappointing to see them disregarded so quickly :D . Great video, but Dragonforce and Sabaton do not deserve to be on an essential power metal albums list and I would probably knock Yngwie off of it too. The list really needed: Lost Horizon - A Flame to the Ground Beneath (shocking that this band didn't even get a mention as their 2 albums are just about flawless) Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands Angra - Temple of Shadows Virgin Steele - Invictus Edguy - Mandrake or Avantasia - The Metal Opera
I understand why Keeper of the Seven Keys made the list, but I've always preferred Helloween's self titled and Walls of Jericho. Also, if anyone ever gets a chance to do noraebang (Korean karaoke), they have absurd amounts of power metal (and all the machines seemed to have the same song list). Only 3 Beach Boys songs, but something like 15-16 Helloween songs. My go to songs were always Victim of Fate, Emerald Sword by Rhapsody, and Revolution Calling by Queensryche.
My top ten 1-Blind Guardian-Somewhere Far beyond 2-Rage-The missing link 3-Helloween-Walls of Jericho 4-Grave Digger-The Reaper 5-Running Wild - Under Jolly Roger 6-Gamma Ray - Land of The free 7-Iced Earth - Night of The stormrider 8-Savatage -Edge of thorns 9-Judas Priest -Painkiller 10-Sanctuary - Refuge Denied
Awesome. Interesting to see how that Nu Metal episode goes. By the way, although I love all Iced Earth albums, I say the Night Of The Stormider is by far their best album and a far better pick. Thank you, Banger TV.
Nightwish Oceanborn should have made it. Because Stargazers, and that throat cutting riff from Passion & The Opera. Other than that decent enough list.
I remember back in the early 1980's we were calling bands like Metal Church, Reverend, Meliah Rage, Heretic, Vicious Rumors and some years later Iced Earth. Even Metallica were being called power metal early on. I tend to still remember these bands as US power metal. Seriously, we need to separate European and US Power Metal. Bands like Hallow's Eve's first record or even Savage Grace's records were influential to the European bands.
hey Scott, what did you think about Fifth Angel 1st album from 1986 i think that was power metal album, what you think.hey good to see you watching Bangertv channel..
Lock Horns wishlist: Top 10 Essential Thrash, Death Albums Top 10 Essential Melodic Death Albums Atmoshperic Black Metal Top 10 Essential Doom Albums Top 10 Essential albums (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's etc.) Power vs. Thrash Death vs. Black Great show!!!!
One of Tad Morose's Century Media era albums should be up there. All 3 are some of my favorite power metal albums of all time. Way darker than pretty much every other power metal band. Urban Breed's vocals and lyrics are amazing on those albums. Also no mention of Morgana Lefay? Maybe both are too unknown and dark sounding for this list.
Respect on that one, but then again, some US bands made it to this mostly european ( and Angra) list, so I guess it would be unfair. Kamelot is from the US and I'm 100 per cent positive, it should have been included, but so should have Rhapsody or Sonata Arctica, Primar Fear, Nocturnal Rites, Vision Divine...
1. Rhapsody - Legendary Tales2. Gamma Ray - Land Of The Free3. Helloween - Keeper 24. Blind Guardian - Imaginations5. Iced Earth - Night Of The Stormrider6. Helloween - Keeper 17. Luca Turilli - King of the Nordic Twilight8. Symphony X - Divine Wings Of Tragedy9. Rhapsody - Symphony Of Enchanted Lands10. HammerFall - Glory To The Brave
Helloween and Manowar are the Godfathers of Power Metal 🤘🤘 Helloween is sort of like Speed Metal Meets Power Metal with a lot of Priest and Maiden influences & also very German !!
Streets is more Prog/Symphonic Rock, there is not too much metal to be found on that album except for few songs, Hall of the Mountain King would be a lot more fitting nomination.
Steeler - Steeler and Manowar - Battle Hymns (both from 1982) are two of the most important proto power metal albums. Kings of Metal is the power metal album above all.
Crimson Glory Transendence. .. Great twin guitars .. the drummer was incredible ... Bassist was great ..And Midnight ' s soaring tenor...Midnight could hit soprano in his high register There was a air of mystery with the face masks Transence deserves to a essential power metal lp Neo classical power metal = Yngwie Malmsteen ( He said it himself)
iced earth is NOT powermetal in my ears, it's thrash blended with classic heavy metal and in best case can be called "american power". I miss Sonata Reckoning, stratovarius infinite, edguy tos, rhapsody soel, nightwish wishmaster... essential power indeed. and when it comes to new power metal orden ogan to the end should be mentioned.. but it's awesome that they focus on this genre. great!
Some essential power metal albuns, these would definetly be on my top 10: Sanctuary - Refuge Denied, Helloween - Walls of Jericho, Helloween - Keeper of the 7 keys pt II; Metal Church - Blessing in Disguise, Manowar - Fighting the World
Halloween especially their first record Walls of Jericho had a Speed Metal feel to it even some of the Keeper stuff has the Speedy almost Thrashed out elements in it
I never understood why Somewhere Far Beyond and Nightfall are often ranked higher than Imaginations from the Other Side. In my opinion, Imaginations from the Other Side is the QUINTESSENTIAL Power Metal album.
Sam Dunn. You are a legend. Thank you for what you have done for metal. Your passion and dedication is inspiring. Been following you since Headbangers Journey, GM, Flight 666 up until Banger TV. Your consistency and high quality film catalogue is also undeniable mate. The discussions are very interesting and it feels so cool to see so many people get involved, united by metal. Lets support this channel and the others that are keeping metal relevant and more alive than ever.. BTW It would be cool to hear your thoughts on the new Insomnium, Winter's Gate. Hail.
Kamelot's The Black Halo deserves to be there somewhere, and while I have no issue with Something Wicked being added, The Dark Saga is my go to Iced Earth album. Also, I can't tell you how thrilled I am that Sam Totman mentioned Luca Turilli's first solo album, KIng's of the Nordic Twilight. That album is just so amazing. I agree with a good chunk of the list, but there were so many bands that went completely unmentioned. Here's what I'd have as the Top 10: - Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2 - Hammerfall - Legacy of Kings - Gamma Ray - Land of the Free - Dragonforce - Sonic FIrestorm - Kamelot - The Black Halo - Tobias Sammet's Avantasia - The Metal Opera - Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands - Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica - Angra - Carry On - Iced Earth - The Dark Saga
Great episode as always. I'm actually really interested to see next weeks nu metal episode. I found the episode of metal evolution on the subject to be one of the most interesting ones. I'm not a fan of it myself but having lived through that period as a fan of more traditional metal and watching nu metal come and go, I find the subject kind of fascinating.
Allied Forces Triumph rik emmett's voice, guitar playing ,material & the over all sound of triumph ( high harmonies) this is one of the earliest power metal lps ever !
There seems to be a very thin line between these genres when u have malmsteem and rainbow as early influences with mentions of let there be rock aswell. U could easily end up tracking back to origins of metal again.
What about Nevermore "Dead Heart in a Dead World" Most important Power Metal album of the 2000's maybe the most important album in 2000's Metal in general. Travis Smith cover, Andy Sneap Sound, 7 string guitars. It represents everything 2000's metal stands for.
sorry banger tv im not happy with you guys not putting rhapsody. legendary tales was the first album that influence other power metal band go more symphonic there wouldn't be dark moor, fairyland, avantasia, heavenly, pathfinder, kaledon , secret sphere and more afterwards to me they completed on the whole power metal sounds manowar, yngwie, helloween, blind guardian, nightwish compine and you get rhapsody/rhapsody of fire/luca turilli's rhapsody
+Andrasté Reminiec well of fire has been around over a decade but rhapsody the original one came out 2 decades ago and before that they had another name called thundercross
I think it was a mistake to leave out some of the 'precursor' albums. Who could doubt the influence albums such as Priests' Defenders of the Faith or Powerslave by Maiden had on the genre of power metal? Tracks such as The Sentinel and the title track from Powerslave are 100% power metal.
I agree with the main thing. Helloween's Keepers are the Power Metal paradigma. They created the path for the thousands of bands that came later to walk through. Another interesting point was Gamma Ray's Land of the free record. For me, it is the best Power Metal record since the Keepers. It is fast, energetic and with NO that much symphonic elements that (IMO) ruined this genre. Having said that, I would add Running Wild. One of a kind band with legendary albums. Cheeeeers!!!
Well, that guy Martin knows his stuff but they focus too much on the European power metal. The high sales-cheerful-singalong type. And Sabaton shouldn't be on that top 10 list - not even on the top 1000. Some landmark power metal albums from the USA are: Crimson Glory - Transcendence 1988 Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King 1987 Queensrÿche (early) - The Warning 1984 Manilla Road - Crystal Logic 1983 Omen - Warning of Danger 1985 Fates Warning (early) - Awaken the Guardian 1986 Riot - Thundersteel 1988 Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction 1984 Manowar - Into Glory Ride 1983
I really cant understand how nobody mentioned Avantasia. They are the best current band and the Metal Opera 1 and 2 are fantastic albums. One could argue that Avantasia is not a band but a project but now they have a fair number of albums and if we are talking about albums the Metal Opera 1 and 2 are incredible.
Surprised no one mentioned American Proto Power metal. Alot of early Prog Metal has as much in common with Power metal as Prog. Fates Warning...Awaken the Guardian Warlord.. Cannons of Destruction just for a mention Fifth Angel..Fifth Angel Crimson Glory..Self titled Firewind - Forged By Fire Chastain .... Mystery of Illusion HeirApparent...Graceful Inheritance
Sam, why wasn't Uriah Heep Mentioned? Their Lps Demons & Wizards ( which the band demons& wizards borrowed their name from this LP) The Magician's Birthday & Sweet Freedom are the three best protopower metal lps ever! David Byron's soaring vocals are the prototype for every power metal singer to come ! Mick Box's guitar playing is incredible( he's out lasted everyone else from that era) they've had a succession of bassists..but ,my favorite was Gary Thain. Gary Thain could play circles around the enwer bassists ( and would've had he lived) Ken Hensley is the best organist in the world... and his high harmony vocals are wonderful And No one can out play Lee Kerslake! Why was there no love shown for the elder statesmen of Power metal?
Manowar Battle hymns Eric Adams voice is amazing on this lp! the extremely high pitched notes he hits towards the end of Battle hymns , can scare a bunch of 17 years cicadas ! Listening to this cd makes me want to grab a sword ,knife &shield.. and go to war with the Akkadians !
No Sam... no dude... 1st you didn't know the name of Hail to England... then you are confusing Power Metal with Melodic Metal... Power Metal is POWER Metal man... Manowar, Grave Digger, Running Wild, Blind Guardian.... I don't know dude... it could be better....
@RyZombie619 Running Wild and Manowar ARE Power Metal. There is the US Power Metal that Manowar plays (along with Jag Panzer, and Crimson Glory), and then there is a keyboard drenched Euro Power Metal (Hammerfall, Sabaton etc).
@RyZombie619 Universal acceptance is a pretty bad thing in the Metal community. Yeah, most people think of Helloween when they think of Power Metal. But most of those people don't even know the majority of US Power Metal bands, and have never considered the stylistic origins of the genre.
Two albums that really need to be on this list are Lost Horizon-Flame to the Ground Beneath (and I mean come on, who DOESN'T know the song Highlander (The One) at this point) and Hibria-Defying the Rules. Hibria is an interesting one cause they are relatively unknown. But they blend the technicality of prog brands like Dream Theater with a straight ahead power metal approach. The standpoint track there would be the title track or the amazing MIllenium Quest. Also, not having Savatage on this list is inexcusable and really hurts the credibility. One of the fathers of power metal. For shame. Hall of the Mountain King (or Gutter Ballet) is absolutely essential power metal.
I think the black halo or karama by kamelot should be on here, kamelot is very progressive and not being a power metal fan myself they are one of the bands that really expands the sound while still having a fun sound that reaches me.
THE LATER RIOT ALBUMS YES ON POWER METAL !! BUT I THINK THE EARLY RIOT SHOULD BE SPEED METAL LOVE RIOT ONE OF MY FAV BAND FROM NYC USA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey guys! Please replace marching out with trilogy ! Mark boals has a crystal shattering tenor.. something that Jefff scott soto only wishes that he ould have
I strongly disagree with the choice of Iced Earth's Something Wicked This Way Comes. I would have substituted it with either Night of the Stormrider or Burnt Offerings. I would go with Storm Rider because of its dark take on power metal with awesome classic songs like Angels Holocaust, Pure Evil, or even the title track. One could chose Burnt Offerings for their masterpiece epic Dante's Inferno, which that song alone has more power and emotion than most, if not all, of Something Wicked.
I love all the songs you list, but there are strong arguments to be made that they have their roots in thrash metal. The Dark Saga was the first album where Iced Earth turned pure power metal in their style and sound. For me it's a difficult choice between the two (TDS and SWTWC) as which is the essential power metal album, but it's SWTWC by a pinch, because its content is more accessible.
Popoff has a strange notion of the term power metal. Having witnessed the rise of Metal in the late 70s and 80s in Germany to me essential power metal bands were Virgin Steele, Savatage, Malice, Savage Grace, Manowar, Chastain, Pantera, Griffin, Omen and Gargoyle - just to name a few. Power Metal has it's origins in the States. And if you take Helloween into consideration you have to chose their much better record "Walls of Jericho".
- Keepers of the seven keys 1( helloween )
- imagination from the other side ( blind guardian )
- land of the free ( gamma ray )
- visions ( stratovarius )
- symphony of the enchanted lands ( rhapsody of fire )
- angels cry ( angra )
- return to heaven denied ( labyrinth )
- vision divine ( vision divine )
- legacy of kings ( hammerfall )
- inhuman rampage ( dragonforce )
1. Helloween. Keeper Of the seven keys 1/2.
2. Hammerfall- Legacy of kings
3. Gamma Ray- new world order
4. Running wild- Pile of skulls.
5. Edguy- Vain Glory Opera
6. Iron Savior- Unification
7. Angra- Angels Cry
8. Primal Fear- Nuclear Fire.
9. Riot- thundersteel
10. Nightwish- Wishmaster
My list:
- Avantasia - The Metal Opera
- Blind Guardian - Imaginations from the Other Side
- Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2
- Gamma Ray - Powerplant
- Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
- Stratovarius - Visions
- Edguy - Mandrake

Yeah Jag Panzer! And Fifth Angel are cool
Symphony of Enchanted Lands needed to be on there. It's a much better choice than Valley of the Damned.

Finally someone with some sense! I love the Keeper albums but Walls of Jericho kickstarted the whole genre in my opinion.
Speed metal,not power metal..
Helloween wouldn't become a power metal band until they hired Michael Kiske
Speed metal
walls of Jerico ismore ofa speed metal lp... not power

Rage - Perfect man. Should have been up there. :)
I have that on cassette
I personally consider that one more of a speed metal record
I know I commented on this six months ago, but I really think they should do another lock horns on U.S. Power Metal bands.
HammerFall - Glory To The Brave
hard to choose because of the different movements that fit under the umbrella Power Metal. What about Manilla Road ?
Helloween and Manowar are the Godfathers of Power Metal 🤘🤘
Helloween is sort of like Speed Metal Meets Power Metal with a lot of Priest and Maiden influences & also very German !!
Savatage - Streets. One of the most underrated albums ever and undeniably power metal
Savatage hall of the mountain king& edge of thorns are better lps
Streets is more Prog/Symphonic Rock, there is not too much metal to be found on that album except for few songs, Hall of the Mountain King would be a lot more fitting nomination.
Savatage haall of the mountain king.. Criss Oliva plays Grieg...
one hell of a power metal lp ! Strange wings is my favorite track
Manowar - Battle Hymn - Same era just as important.
Not really that album was 1982 again power metal wasn't recognised back then. Manowar are Proto Power
Sonata Arctica til' the day I die
Steeler - Steeler and Manowar - Battle Hymns (both from 1982) are two of the most important proto power metal albums. Kings of Metal is the power metal album above all.
the show just keep getting better & better
god job guys
not including a Rhapsody album is a crime. Sonata Arctica deserved a spot too, imo with their Silence album but it's a bit underrated for some reason
Crimson Glory Transendence. .. Great twin guitars .. the drummer was incredible ... Bassist was great ..And Midnight ' s soaring tenor...Midnight could hit soprano in his high register
There was a air of mystery with the face masks
Transence deserves to a essential power metal lp
Neo classical power metal = Yngwie Malmsteen ( He said it himself)
You need the bell from the first Black Sabbath record! Or maybe even a "For Whom The Bell Tolls" bell. Make it happen! :)
how about the brass bell from Hells bells?
This was a quality debate and thank you Lisa and Sam for listening to our requests!! :D
iced earth is NOT powermetal in my ears, it's thrash blended with classic heavy metal and in best case can be called "american power". I miss Sonata Reckoning, stratovarius infinite, edguy tos, rhapsody soel, nightwish wishmaster... essential power indeed. and when it comes to new power metal orden ogan to the end should be mentioned.. but it's awesome that they focus on this genre. great!
It's just Power/Thrash, or even Melodic Thrash
Some essential power metal albuns, these would definetly be on my top 10: Sanctuary - Refuge Denied, Helloween - Walls of Jericho, Helloween - Keeper of the 7 keys pt II; Metal Church - Blessing in Disguise, Manowar - Fighting the World
I'd choose Triumph of Steel over Fighting the World, but Metal Church's Blessing in Disguise is essential listening in my mind
what about The dark ( same band)
the first two Crimson Glory lps belong on this list
Where is Havens Gate's "Living in hysteria"? Heir Apparent's "Graceful Inheritance"?
Halloween especially their first record Walls of Jericho had a Speed Metal feel to it even some of the Keeper stuff has the Speedy almost Thrashed out elements in it
Helloween
@@juliereminiec4937 oops my bad !!
I never understood why Somewhere Far Beyond and Nightfall are often ranked higher than Imaginations from the Other Side.
In my opinion, Imaginations from the Other Side is the QUINTESSENTIAL Power Metal album.
somewhere far beyond is my favourite but imaginations... is near there
Martin and Sam nailed it. I like how the albums have possible dual choices, Hammerfall, Halloween, Dragonforce etc....
Hail.
Fernando! You're choking us up over here. Thanks man! \m/\m/
what does GM stand for?
Kamelot's The Black Halo deserves to be there somewhere, and while I have no issue with Something Wicked being added, The Dark Saga is my go to Iced Earth album. Also, I can't tell you how thrilled I am that Sam Totman mentioned Luca Turilli's first solo album, KIng's of the Nordic Twilight. That album is just so amazing.
I agree with a good chunk of the list, but there were so many bands that went completely unmentioned. Here's what I'd have as the Top 10:
- Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2
- Hammerfall - Legacy of Kings
- Gamma Ray - Land of the Free
- Dragonforce - Sonic FIrestorm
- Kamelot - The Black Halo
- Tobias Sammet's Avantasia - The Metal Opera
- Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands
- Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
- Angra - Carry On
- Iced Earth - The Dark Saga
Great episode as always. I'm actually really interested to see next weeks nu metal episode. I found the episode of metal evolution on the subject to be one of the most interesting ones.
I'm not a fan of it myself but having lived through that period as a fan of more traditional metal and watching nu metal come and go, I find the subject kind of fascinating.
And I wouldn't have labelled Yngwie as Power Metal. It is more hard rock on speed with neoclassical elements (if that makes sense... 😛)
ever heard of combining neo classical music& power metal?
elitist !
Allied Forces Triumph rik emmett's voice, guitar playing ,material & the over all sound of triumph ( high harmonies) this is one of the earliest power metal lps ever !
Riot - Thundersteel
I say "ugh nu metal" as I roll my eyes. Sam, have fun. But in all seriousness, I'm sure it'll be a fun episode regardless lol.
Hey. Will you guys be doing a Lock Horns for POST METAL in the future? Cheers
They not really a power metal band they more progressive metal
Love Nevermore but would say that Dreaming Neon Black goes over Dead Heart.
Aeolian scale IS the natural minor scale. Someone had to be redundant.
Ohhh, music theory LOL
Alright egghrad... what is the natural major scale called?
logan, i suspect that Ankok had to google it
LMAO
No Helstar?...
Weren't a lot of American Power metal bands represented here. No Metal Church, Sanctuary; Savatage wasn't even mentioned.
Sabaton, Iced Earth, and Powerwolf.
Riot shirt and no Riot album?? Thundersteel is a must on this essential table. Ofc it's also speed metal, but more power there.
Vtx,what do you have against fire down under ?
Born in America?
First livestream i miss... And featuring the MIGHTY Martin Popoff! It would be nice to make a thrash metal essencial albums i think. BANGER RULES!!
sorry banger tv im not happy with you guys not putting rhapsody. legendary tales was the first album that influence other power metal band go more symphonic there wouldn't be dark moor, fairyland, avantasia, heavenly, pathfinder, kaledon , secret sphere and more afterwards to me they completed on the whole power metal sounds manowar, yngwie, helloween, blind guardian, nightwish compine and you get rhapsody/rhapsody of fire/luca turilli's rhapsody
and how long has Rhapsody of Fire been around?
+Andrasté Reminiec well of fire has been around over a decade but rhapsody the original one came out 2 decades ago and before that they had another name called thundercross
I agree
excellent video going to spend some time digging through these bands' discographies
Totally agree on those two.
Really thank you guys for this awesome show!!
the hall of the mountain king Savatage
Oh man. I am going to have so many opinions on every nu metal album. I won't even post my obligatory post metal request I'm so happy.
Cheeeeers!!!
crimson glory album crimson glory is a badass power metal album
what about Transendence?
Love this show Sam! Can't always contribute to the chat because of timezones but watching it back later is still awesome!
We take comments in advance too. The chat is open several hours in advance and we read those. We also take comments on our Facebook book page. Cheers!
BANGER Oh that's great to hear! Will keep that in mind. Cheers!
Somewhere far Beyond is my number one. Without Bards Song, I would have never gotten into heavy metal as a whole.
Running wild is power metal
Well, that guy Martin knows his stuff but they focus too much on the European power metal. The high sales-cheerful-singalong type. And Sabaton shouldn't be on that top 10 list - not even on the top 1000.
Some landmark power metal albums from the USA are:
Crimson Glory - Transcendence 1988
Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King 1987
Queensrÿche (early) - The Warning 1984
Manilla Road - Crystal Logic 1983
Omen - Warning of Danger 1985
Fates Warning (early) - Awaken the Guardian 1986
Riot - Thundersteel 1988
Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction 1984
Manowar - Into Glory Ride 1983
I really cant understand how nobody mentioned Avantasia. They are the best current band and the Metal Opera 1 and 2 are fantastic albums. One could argue that Avantasia is not a band but a project but now they have a fair number of albums and if we are talking about albums the Metal Opera 1 and 2 are incredible.
Liisa looks so cute in this episode, I love her smile. I think Edguy and Rhaposody had very good power metal albums thay could be also in the top 10
Surprised no one mentioned American Proto Power metal. Alot of early Prog Metal has as much in common with Power metal as Prog.
Fates Warning...Awaken the Guardian
Warlord.. Cannons of Destruction
just for a mention
Fifth Angel..Fifth Angel
Crimson Glory..Self titled
Firewind - Forged By Fire
Chastain .... Mystery of Illusion
HeirApparent...Graceful Inheritance
Passing a sterling silver goblet to Sam Dunn... here you go,sam
Handing a silver wiccan bell to lisa
Sam, why wasn't Uriah Heep Mentioned?
Their Lps Demons & Wizards ( which the band demons& wizards borrowed their name from this LP)
The Magician's Birthday
& Sweet Freedom are the three best protopower metal lps ever!
David Byron's soaring vocals are the prototype for every power metal singer to come !
Mick Box's guitar playing is incredible( he's out lasted everyone else from that era)
they've had a succession of bassists..but ,my favorite was Gary Thain.
Gary Thain could play circles around the enwer bassists ( and would've had he lived)
Ken Hensley is the best organist in the world... and his high harmony vocals are wonderful
And No one can out play Lee Kerslake!
Why was there no love shown for the elder statesmen of Power metal?
Maybe they're proto power metal?
Demons and Wizards (the album) is just rock music. It even borders on blues. Hardly metal in any capacity whatsoever.
Manowar Battle hymns
Eric Adams voice is amazing on this lp!
the extremely high pitched notes he hits towards the end of Battle hymns , can scare a bunch of 17 years cicadas !
Listening to this cd makes me want to grab a sword ,knife &shield.. and go to war with the Akkadians !
No Manilla Road?
No Sam...
For shame. Hall of the Mountain King (or Gutter Ballet) is absolutely essential power metal.
no love for Dark Moor's the gate of oblivion??
I think the black halo or karama by kamelot should be on here, kamelot is very progressive and not being a power metal fan myself they are one of the bands that really expands the sound while still having a fun sound that reaches me.
The fact that they are somewhat progressive is why they get excluded. They are power metal by default, but they are not strictly power metal.
Where is Edguy - Theater of Salvation?
yank manowar for being a combination of Classic & Power Metal
THE LATER RIOT ALBUMS YES ON POWER METAL !! BUT I THINK THE EARLY RIOT SHOULD BE SPEED METAL LOVE RIOT ONE OF MY FAV BAND FROM NYC USA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Early Fates Warning needed included IMO.
Yea, more progressive though.
"Sabaton is this era's Dragonforce" Martin, I respect you mate but you didn't have to be so harsh on Sabaton.
I would have added Savatage ..hall of the mountain king
Running wild.God now i feel old listen to those bands 16 years ago.Halloweens keeper stuff. Still like it.
Something wicked my fav from iced earth
sam can we have vedic death episode?
The best list to come out of locked horns...only Sonata Arctica is missing: that band perfected power metal on their first four albums.
hey guys! Please replace marching out with trilogy !
Mark boals has a crystal shattering tenor.. something that Jefff scott soto only wishes that he ould have
please epica album from kamelot becuase it an awasome album
And if you take Helloween into consideration you have to chose their much better record "Walls of Jericho".
don't forget britian, vodka!
Rhapsody (pre Turilli/Staropoli split) should really be on there...
