    When I first started learning to knit the first scarf I knitted for myself was in garter stitch but with a slightly difficult yarn. I don't regret it and it was so warm! I only knew the knit stitch at the time. Since then I've learned how to purl, and then I started straight into cabling. I was an ambitious novice. I'm still a novice, but I love the craft. Thank you so much for the video's. I've found them incredibly helpful

    I am a beginning knitter and so far it's driving me completely crazy! Not at all relaxing in comparison to crochet. I so want to thank you for the tip on weaving in the tail ( which annoys me to no end). It's a great tip and the end result is so uniform. Thanks again!

    I'm a lefty but crochet with my right hand because my mom is right handed lol,I learned how to knit on the internet.. so i knit right handed. I never had trouble using my right hand for most things. Thank you for the refresher! I just picked up a scarf I started a few years ago and had no clue what I did. I really want to learn how to read patterns make some slippers too!

    Different bind offs have different looks, some are more stretchy than others. The standard knitted bind off done here is a good all purpose bind off, it is neither too firm nor too stretchy. I have a number of bind off videos on my channel, you can see what they look like.

  • @iknitwithcatfur
    @iknitwithcatfur  11 лет назад +2

    Without watching what you are doing, it is hard to say exactly. An extra stitch means you are making an increase somewhere along the row. Sometimes at the beginning, the yarn may go over the top of the needle and it looks like there is a stitch there. Maybe you are accidentally making a yarn over. You can just knit two of the stitches together, which will get rid of that extra stitch you have, and you can carry on knitting. It won't matter with this project, it will look fine, I promise!

    I can't link here in comments, but if you go to the Craft Yarn Council of America website, you can get a list of the yarn weights. I am not sure that all manufacturers use the CYCA standard weights when labeling yarn though, certain manufacturers may use their own system that slightly differs. Honestly, I don't pay much attention to that, if I like a yarn, I use it :0) For a beginner, Red Heart worsted is good yarn to start on. That is a "4".

    Hi there, I really love your work and im a very beginner at knitting and trying to knit a scarf under your instructions. problem is that my scarf getting bigger from two sides, long one and short one. What the mistake that I have done and how to get rid of it now at this stage
    Thanks

    • @iknitwithcatfur
      @iknitwithcatfur  9 лет назад +1

      Maha Shahwan It's hard to tell without seeing what you're doing, but it sounds like you might be making an unnecessary increase. When you are starting the row, be sure your working yarn isn't going over the top of the needle. When the yarn is in that position, it looks like you have two stitches instead of just one. When you start the row, let your working yarn dangle and take a look to make sure it is hanging down in front, not going over the top of the needle.

  • @iknitwithcatfur
    @iknitwithcatfur  11 лет назад

    I don't remember how long it took. The time it takes someone to knit this will vary depending on how fast you know, and how often you work on it.

    Are pointed needles like the ones you used better ? Are they at least easier in some way ?

    • @iknitwithcatfur
      @iknitwithcatfur  9 лет назад

      Jamila Best I prefer pointy tips, but some prefer a more blunt tip. If you are knitting lace, pointy tips make it much easier because it helps to get into the stitches when you have to work 3 or 4 stitches together, for example. Generally blunt tips work better with heavier yarn - pointy tips can sometimes split heavier yarn. Mostly it comes down to personal preference and what you are most comfortable with.

    • @jamilabest5857

      Julianne Ha Yes those are metal - no one needle is better than another it is a personal preference. You will need to try different types to see what you like best.

    Is the garter stitch another name for knit stitch? Or if not what's the difference?

    • @iknitwithcatfur
      @iknitwithcatfur  7 лет назад

      Garter stitch is the pattern that you get by making the knit stitch across every row, or you could purl every row, which is called reverse garter stitch.

    • @iknitwithcatfur
      @iknitwithcatfur  11 лет назад +2

      MaiVue Chang-Yang Yes it is supposed to get longer, otherwise you would have a very short, useless scarf. If it is getting wider, it shouldn't; you are making unnecessary increases somewhere.

  • @nicolep7077
    @nicolep7077 11 лет назад

    my mother said that scarves should be loose..but i see your scarf is tight instead, what is the trick anyways?

    • @iknitwithcatfur
      @iknitwithcatfur  11 лет назад +2

      Wen Jing Peng I am not certain what you mean by loose and tight. If you are referring to the tension, everyone knits with a different tension, and there is no right or wrong way to make a scarf. Scarves can be any way you like them, they don't have to be one way or the other.

      Kamen Chan It depends on how quickly you are able to knit; using a bulky or chunky yarn will reduce the time also since heavier yarn works up faster.

    • @iknitwithcatfur

      minyoung shin Are you working in stocking stitch or a stocking stitch based pattern? If so your project is always going to curl, it is just the nature of stocking stitch. Plain garter or other stitches based on garter will not curl. Check TECHknitter's blog, there are a number of posts on the topic.

    • @iknitwithcatfur
      @iknitwithcatfur  9 лет назад

      Kikyo Akiyama Ah, ok. It sounds like you are making an increase somewhere. Before you start the row, check to make sure your working yarn is hanging down in front, not draped over the top of the needle. When the working yarn goes over top of the needle, it makes it look like there are two stitches where there should be only one, which can add an extra stitch. Hope that makes sense.

    • @iknitwithcatfur
      @iknitwithcatfur  8 лет назад

      I assume you mean the side edges? Since the stitch count remains constant, the edges are straight. If you make an increase it will get wider; if you make a decrease without adding another stitch to make up for the decrease, it will narrow.

    • @DaysFlyBy007
      @DaysFlyBy007 7 лет назад

      iknitwithcatfur - I think she meant how did you keep your side edges from looking bumpy as garter stitch typically does? It looks like it would if you'd slipped every first stitch purlwise and then knit stitch the rest. Neat and tidy.

    20 isn’t enough...too narrow

      That depends on the weight of the yarn used, gauge and personal preference as to width.

      @@iknitwithcatfur I just did 36, I’m using 8 ply, with number 6 mm needles to make it more of a loose stitch. It’s for my son who is 6’4 lol….
      What about that last loose stitch I saw at the end as you’re binding off?

      Easy fix :-) ruclips.net/video/aRNbWHhI0OM/видео.html There are other ways to accomplish a neater last stitch, just google and you can find them. This is the least fiddly for me.
