Nothing against Luke and Linus but I’m really enjoying Jon hosting, I feel it adds a bit more flavour across the three channels, not that I don’t enjoy Linus and channel super fun, but Terran and Jon should host more
Tbh I'm sick of only linus hosting here and on ltt. Luke is officially gonna host like 3 videos a year because of this floatplane stuff and I guess linus doesn't let them be in the ltt videos
Dolby Atmos is awesome, I have the Samsung HW-K950 soundbar, which is the only atmos soundbar to actually include rear channel speakers and as a consequence also has 4 upfiring speakers. Unless you have a really advanced setup you’re never going to be able to precisely locate objects in space, but you truly do hear sound coming from all around you and it’s eerily close to the kind of sound you get in the cinema.
Tobias Vis "most terrible voice .....ever" you're easily triggered there Tobias. Look, there was a saying, before the interweb thing came along, that went "if you have nothing good to say, then say nothing at all" but all that's lost nowadays it seems. Tobias........ basically, why can't you just be nice by just saying nothing?
Please note: Dolby 5.1 actually has 6 channels. 5 for fullrange speakers and one dedicated for sub. The sub-channel isn't generated from the five fullrange-channels. So that's a error at 0:52.
I know it is mean to say but I absolutely am disgusted by Linus voice but it is not only that, he also makes it worse by speaking like a mouse that is getting electroluted, going extremely high and "low" trying to sound like a professional speaker I guess. If the content would not be that good I would not torture myself with the videos. I guess he never got professional voice training, he should definitely invest in that to show empathy with his viewers.
Linus' voice always does the auditive equivalent of a frontflip when he says "but". You will remember this message from now on. You can not un-read it. You will not forget it. Every "but" he utters shall remind you of the fourth version of AnalKarl's account, because he forgot the passwords for the first three.
Yes, but wouldn't it have been interesting to hear Jon trying to explain the technology behind Dolby Atmos while Linus jeered comments backed to him from random positions in the recorded space (i.e. from the peanut gallery).
2:08 maybe talking about calibration integrated in some (good) sytems would have helped to moderate the statement about classical surround. The Audissey system is improving the result based on the user's configuration and distance to the speakers and the possibilities of the speakers too.
I think the best aspect of this is it works even in only stereo, making it perfect for gaming with stereo headphones without the fake "virtual surround" some dacs offer.
This solves one of the things that annoy me with surround sound. Usually you'd have the person on screen talking coming out of the center channel only, which sounds weird. Doing it like this makes it come out of the center and front channels, which in my opinion makes much more sense.
To anyone who cares about having a good audio experience, absolutely do not buy "Atmos enabled" upfiring speakers like the ones shown at 3:17. These do not work in 98% of rooms and even when they do work, they fall way behind dedicated ceiling mounted speakers. You'll only be muddying up your front soundstage with those upfiring speakers.
Dolby Atmos for the home can render and scale up to 24.1.10 (as long as it's not a fixed "print-out" with no 3D objects and more like a channel-based immersive track as all Disney UHD Blu-ray's are and a few titles from other studios - sadly). Consumer Atmos tracks can accept around 20 discrete objects before spatial compression is used to lump similar objects in time and space together for data and bandwidth saving purposes (the cinema package has no such limitations to worry about). DTS: X is only capable of 7.1.4 at this time and allows for only a few objects to be used along side the 7.1 channel base. Almost all home DTS: X tracks are print-outs fixed to 7.1.4.
Dolby Atmos is amazing. It's just limited on what movies and games have it right now. Upward firing speakers aren't that great though. I used a $10 speaker Mount and hung speakers upside down on my ceiling and it works freaking phenomenally. You don't have to cut holes in your ceiling for that. When are you hear a movie with helicopters or bullets flying over your head it is very immersive.
RUclips should have a feature that channels can put content in videos that only non-subscribers can see but subscribers can't and the other way around. So an example would be non-subscribers only seeing the intro of this video.
But that would create leeway for youtube to create a system for say youtube red where they could specifically hide content from free users and only show the full video for those who pay, thereby literally cutting content from videos. Its a slippery slope
Thank you for demystifying this, I've always wanted to know. Can you do one on cell phone towers please? I drove by them all the time and wondered which carrier they belong to. Thanks!
As you can see, nunfortunately, your comment didn't aged well. Idk what you loved about him so much, but for me he was literally the worst host at LMG in the last 10 years.. him before Edzel.
Did anyone try gaming with Dolby Atmos on the PC using the Dolby Access app? I wonder how compatible it is with games. I can't check this myself because I only have a 7.1 Setup and even that can't be fully used with games like Borderlands 1-3 or Ghost Recon Wildlands only using 5.1 channels which means I have to matrix-split my rear channels to get the full experience. Older EAX games on the other hand work very well in 7.1 with a capable sound card (like the Audigy 2 ZS in my case). And ironically when you use ASIO to capture the outputs you even get 9.1 including a separate surround back center channel and a top/ceiling channel.
I'd love a receiver that just comes with four to six sets of OssicX surround headphones, with microphones, and a smartphone app so you can choose who you can hear while you're all watching a movie together (if anyone at all).
Dolby atmos for headphones is actually pretty bad according to most people who tried it. People have said that it degrades quality too much and the free windows sonic 7.1 is better lol (The downside is that it works with some apps only). I haven't tried it so I don't know if it's true. EDIT: I tried it and it seems both do not work with any of my apps, chrome, mpc-hc, and vlc. Sbx pro studio (that came with my mobo) works with every app on the other hand.
I love my home system with 15.3.6 speakers. I still go to the movies. But when I watch them at home it's such a more personal experience. Sadly contect up scaled from 5.1 does not sound great unless I disables some speakers but my receiver can store 3 speaker layouts.
I'm still not sure that I understand from this presentation how Dolby Atmos differs from Dolby 5.1, DTS and other theatrical recording formats of the past generation (feels kind of weird to refer to Dolby 5.1 and DTS as the "past" generation). Is Dolby Atmos somehow more dynamic? Does it require a DSP to process the audio stream in a more active fashion than with the previous generation? What does it mean for a receiver (or speaker for that matter) to be Dolby Atmos enabled / compatible?
usually when you give us info, you tell us what you are excited for, i want to hear it. maybe buy every old speaker that was worth something and build a sound wall? lol tell me what you are excited for.
The first time I experienced Dolby Atmos was when I was watching The Incredibles 2. I was looking for Jack Jack when he vanished as he was reappearing in another spot in the kitchen, up on the ceiling like an idiot.
I think this one is an old edited video. Notice that there's no 60FPS option like the previous video had. The intro might have been left in this one by mistake.

0:22 the big sqaure center ceiling mounted thing is an AC unit....
nice catch 🤣
SPOILER ALERT, MATE! That's extremely underrated! Haha!
maybe youre right in that particular picture but there is some theaters with speakers on the ceiling
Close enough
Linus looks different today
😂😂😂
yeah i think its the haircut
Looks kinda like Wesley Crusher to me...
im glad i wasnt the only one who noticed, its definitely linus tho, did you see that transition into the sponsor?
This is how Linus looks without a beard
Did Luke get a new haircut or something? He looks very different...
no luke havecut
@Cody Carson r/wooosh
Hmm, Don’t have an answer for that...
@Hugo Gonzalez WTH?? XD!
Nothing against Luke and Linus but I’m really enjoying Jon hosting, I feel it adds a bit more flavour across the three channels, not that I don’t enjoy Linus and channel super fun, but Terran and Jon should host more
trust me, linus loves this comment, he wants time to do other shit too lol
Tbh I'm sick of only linus hosting here and on ltt. Luke is officially gonna host like 3 videos a year because of this floatplane stuff and I guess linus doesn't let them be in the ltt videos
Charlie Thompson-hill probably because now the guy who writes the scripts is the host
Is this Spam?
Is he still working at Linus Media Group? I don't see him anymore.
0:20 really, the air conditioning unit is part of the surround system? lol ;D

I like this guy. Linus, more from him please.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
He has the most terrible voice I've ever heard on RUclips

Better to be enveloped in Jon's voice than Linus' 😋
Have a reply

Was meinst du wieso ich mich Fergesslich genannt habe? Damals konnte ich mir nie meinen YT-Nicknamen merken und Vergesslich war bereits vergeben.
Yes, but wouldn't it have been interesting to hear Jon trying to explain the technology behind Dolby Atmos while Linus jeered comments backed to him from random positions in the recorded space (i.e. from the peanut gallery).
Google dropped a Wix ad in before the video, and was not disappointed in there being a squarspace ad at the end of the video a la Techquickie.
Somebody needs to take all the marshmallows out of this guys mouth.
Nick Lewis
Mean
Stop
I’d really like to see a techquickie explaining Boot Camp. Might help some Mac users become introduced into true pc gaming.
Thank you! I’ve been wondering how it works. Sound objects and locations, makes sense now.
2:08 maybe talking about calibration integrated in some (good) sytems would have helped to moderate the statement about classical surround. The Audissey system is improving the result based on the user's configuration and distance to the speakers and the possibilities of the speakers too.
Oh Damn. I was literally looking this up when I git the notification.
Are you a Wizard?
Jon seems to have more control of Techquickie than ever before.
0:21 I thought the height channel in the middle was the air corn Haha!
I think the best aspect of this is it works even in only stereo, making it perfect for gaming with stereo headphones without the fake "virtual surround" some dacs offer.
Great presentation, Jon. Well done.
best explanation of the two object formats yet.

Jon's voice is very soothing!
I love how there's a little game at the end ...... quickly close befor the intro into add

thank you john was trying to figure it out with out reading an article
His voice accent is funny
Damn John that velvety transition so good hahaha

Which is better Auro 3d or atmos?
@@abhijith6589 I don't have much experience with Auro 3D. But I know not as many movies are compatible with it
Your best "commentary" imo
I always look forward to a new techquickie video

....no.
no.
Akhilendra Gunasekara I see what he means. Hopefully they make it tied to the subscription instead of whatever someone wants
thats a logical fallacy akhilendra and I disagree with the idea never the less
John's quite good on camera, hope we get to see more of him around
Thank you for demystifying this, I've always wanted to know. Can you do one on cell phone towers please? I drove by them all the time and wondered which carrier they belong to. Thanks!
Very well explained! Great job
Really brilliant explanation!
Doing a great job Jon!
Nice to the point explanation.
I actually like all hosts in here.
That was perfect Jon! Great work :) Keep it up!
I love when Jon hosts. Please make this a thing. I know Jon isn't a huge fan but the viewers are :D
As you can see, nunfortunately, your comment didn't aged well. Idk what you loved about him so much, but for me he was literally the worst host at LMG in the last 10 years.. him before Edzel.
Is something wrong with the audio or just me? Sounds like he has a short tongue or smth.
Yeah, he usually sounds like that but this video had more than usual, made me a bit uneasy
Sounds like the guy has serious case of dry mouth
Of all the people at LTT that don't talk like they have something wrong with them, they put this guy in some of these videos JUST to talk. It sucks.
Hahahaha i didnt have to finish the vid because his voice is disturbing.. the way he speaks is uneasy on my ears..
Most ppl of Asian decent have short/small body parts.
I don’t usually comment but I love it when you host videos!! :)

meanwhile watches techquickie videos with a cinematic setup and only runs in 2.1 for this video
And thus you again include your signature, bad integration of sponsorship advertisements in your outro. They're so bad they're good ;)
I'd love a receiver that just comes with four to six sets of OssicX surround headphones, with microphones, and a smartphone app so you can choose who you can hear while you're all watching a movie together (if anyone at all).
0:21 I'm pretty sure one of the highlights is highlighting an air con vent.
What about Windows Atmos for Headphones?
Habieru7 most important thing to know about that, it doesn't work without USB headphones
Keya Kinan aka poopy headsets
Dolby atmos for headphones is actually pretty bad according to most people who tried it. People have said that it degrades quality too much and the free windows sonic 7.1 is better lol (The downside is that it works with some apps only). I haven't tried it so I don't know if it's true.

I use dolby atmos in a video game. Using my in-car buds I can listen exactly where everyone is
or windows sonic?
So does that mean that streaming services use DTS:X? Or they use Atmos more?
I really enjoy John's videos! Please please do more!
Nice to see new faces sometimes. Well done Jon 👍
wow many thanks for making this video.
Fun fact, the sound as object thing was developed in a usable form Aureal3D, Creative sued them into the ground for having better tech though.
Sad that innovation can be crushed like that, and then stolen later on. Big companies that aren't held accountable are a cancer to the world.
You explain much better and quicker than Linus. Linus should leave TechQuickie and start another channel called TechSlowie.
Oh finally now I know what the hell the Cineplex theatres labels mean.
Here's an idea. learning how to code as fast as possible. can you do a video on the steps to get started?
I love my home system with 15.3.6 speakers.
I still go to the movies. But when I watch them at home it's such a more personal experience.
Sadly contect up scaled from 5.1 does not sound great unless I disables some speakers but my receiver can store 3 speaker layouts.
I learn something new everyday

Didn't realise the air con was a part of the surround sound system 0:21
0:18 suwwound sound~
Hey LINUS with "MELTDOWN" and "SPECTRE" exposed we couldn't miss it but you are the best person to know from hence i am requesting. PLEASE
0:07 if you want to skip the intro
I'm happy with plain stereo. I can imagine it was in surround sound later on when I think about the movie.
Correct me if I'm wrong (which happens frequently) surely you still need to be in that tiny "sweet spot" for it to be effective.
Thumbs up for that ad intergration, best segway yet!
usually when you give us info, you tell us what you are excited for, i want to hear it. maybe buy every old speaker that was worth something and build a sound wall? lol tell me what you are excited for.
02:49 *atmos support up to 118 channel* R U SURE BOUT DAT
The first time I experienced Dolby Atmos was when I was watching The Incredibles 2. I was looking for Jack Jack when he vanished as he was reappearing in another spot in the kitchen, up on the ceiling like an idiot.
0:36 someone hit record
Great, thanks for clearing that up
Just got an AV receiver that support both of those.
Quite wondering what they do
Do more episodes jon. Thanks
Great video - thanks !
Nice job man!! I love the video
So do any 5.1/7.1 Headset already work with Atmos?
Did you really highlighted the air conditioner in the center of the ceiling at 0:22 :D !!???
back to having the intro sigh*
A 5 second intro makes you sigh? I wish I had your life.
Why would you just accept things as they are if you know they could be better, why not seek improvement?
I know, I really hoped they removed it for good...
I think this one is an old edited video. Notice that there's no 60FPS option like the previous video had.
The intro might have been left in this one by mistake.
As a German I have a hard time listening to this guy.
why lol
Flo Grauper yeah he slurs of combines his word to much
As a German I cannot approve this message.
Das war doch astreines Anglosächsisch, Freundchen.
Sorry guys... But at 0:21 - in the group of 3 on the ceiling.
Isn't the one on the top actually an Air Conditioning unit?
Yap.
I want those 118 different angles of Jon’s voice :P
If John is going to do ads for Square Space he should maybe figure out how to correctly pronounce the word Square.
Can you guys do an episode about IPFS and IPNS?
It would be pretty great if you do.
miss this guy
WE WANT LINUS
While I may be deploying for a while, and I do like to trust the approvals of LTT as for cpu cooling, I have enjoyed the Noctua fans a lot. The next few months, I am looking primarily at speakers and to see how this atmos setup will work for games and how to properly set up soundvars. Since while one in front is pretty lovely. I do wonder how adding one or two sound bars to a system would create an amazing theatre of sound. Let alone would someone need a fancy dac or sound card to make games sound be a pure immersive setuo that would put theatres to shame. Given that soumd technology has advanced quite a lot over the years.
So from what I understand.. people watching movie in a cinema hall won't experience same "location" of source of sound.
So is there any ideal location to sit in the hall?.. like centre or at the back?
Jon in 180 direction!!??, why not.
Good video, good Jon
C is for...
We will never forget
(Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE)
So it kind of does the same thing as a 3D video engine? It's my theory that stores location data for sound-creating objects and then runs algorithms to determine volume, delay, and reverb associated with it to give the desired effect.
How can we hear the sounds of the mobile phones, pets (dogs & cats), dolphins, earthquakes, so on, come from the ground up in the movies? I think we should make the ground speakers for those sounds. 🔊 🔊 🔊
4D sounds are mixed down to stereo , you still have to have use headphones.
I dislike the newer iteration of “Dolby surround“ which replaces pro logic ll and DTS Neural X which replaces DTS neo, they sounds OK I suppose but I strongly dislike the lack of fine-tuning you can do, if any at all, depending on the receiver you have. The older system may have been a matrixed codec but I could fine-tune it to suit my situation Such as widening the center speaker to give mono sources a bit more breathing room Etc. something that you generally speaking can’t do with the newer systems (I.e. Dolby Surround and DTS Neural X) aside from a few receivers out there.
These newer versions offer almost nothing at all by way of user adjustment aside from speaker level.
Nice explanation...Felt like it was presented by Wil Wheaton's brother.
Can you do one on how to clean pc from dust. How do you clean radiator h100 v
Canned air
BonfireRL its on the top, linus said keep canned air parallel to ground
XMegaJuni Angle the can slightly
Get a gun and shoot it it will remove the dust!
Heads up, Don't use the suck side of a vacuum for the electronics with chips .. lol There's static on the end, I killed a motherboard once.. lol
John, you should do more videos mate!
3:09 luke is that you?
This is the so-called modern day equivalent of Dolby Stereo Digital/Dolby Stereo Digital Spectral Recording/Dolby Surround AC-3 Digital/Dolby Digital vs. The Digital Experience/DTS Digital Sound.
@0:20 at the ceiling. Did they just mark the A/C as a speaker? Linus, give your editors some rest
This guy is very good and more tolerable than Linus
