I cycle to work for a 50kms round trip. In 2017 I started cycling to work to go on time and save myself from a PIP since I used to be regular late comer at office.
It improved my mental and physical health. Become a hobby. Gave a disciplined lifestyle.
Many started cycling look at me. Now I’m doing weekend long rides (150-200kms) along with daily commute. Have a target of 400kms per week.
The concern is, the autowalas, bikers, corporate cabs, sometimes BMTC buses won’t respect my space and give a very hard time. End of the day I just need to protect myself and also contribute to nature and society.

Since many are asking about the sweating problem which spoils the office attire, below are my recommendations,
Two things, one is I start early from home, put on some light music(also be aware of surroundings 🤷‍♂️) and cycle stress less, still I sweat out so I wrap around some light cloth just in the back collar of the shirt. Wear a good sweat absorbent Inner sleeve and will wash it every single day before going to bed.
Two is when I try to beat the time laps, so I wear just a T-shirt and keep the inner sleeve and shirt in the backpack. After reaching office will just walk around the parking lot/common gathering space till the sweat is complete dried(15~mins) and then change to the shirt in the men’s room.
Also a head band is mandatory to prevent the sweat from dripping out over the face and a full face band(from decathlon) to avoid tanning and dust.

I cycle to work from Ramamurthy Nagar to Belandur. Since ORR is jammed most of the time, I take other routes to get to office. I end up pedaling 22 km instead of 14 and reach office/home in an hour or less, markedly less time than using a motor vehicle.

At one point I thought 2 metro lines were enough for BMRCL to construct in Bengaluru, and they have done so in the peak areas of Bengaluru (me not being a Bangalorean). Little did I know the peak places of Bengaluru, and the actual plans that BMRCL has for Namma Metro. 500 years is an understatement it seems 🤭🤭🤭.

On the occasion of world bicycle day, I'm reminded of an episode during my teens. I used to go for early morning tuitions daily. One day as usual i woke up brushed my teeth and drank a cup of water to start off my day. My mother came smiling to me. Before i could even think why she was smiling at me she lifted her hand and spanked me hard on my bum. She punished me for a mistake i did a few months ago but was waiting for the right time to spank me. My butts were on fire. I found it hard to cycle to tuition since cycling requires constant pedalling. The more i pedalled the more my buttocks stung. I had to stop at times to soothe my bum and then resume cycling.....😫

I love cycling, but in namma oru? A big NO!
Been averaging 50kms of commuting for the last 15yrs and I find cycling the most dangerous on Bangalore roads.
On a bicycle, you are invisible to most road users. I have tried, been knocked down a couple of times, and had several near misses.
The forever bad roads will take a toll on your body. You'll notice body aches or back pain by the time you enter your 30s.
You are exposed to dust, noise, and smoke all the time. Cons far outweigh pros.
