The 2022 Padma awards ceremony had a special awardee - '125-year-old' yoga guru Swami Sivananda whose video of walking bare feet to receive his Padma award had made him an Internet sensation. But the humble monk says it is his "ideal" way of life that attracts people. Shikha Salaria visits Varanasi to meet him and tell the story of the award-winning philanthropist.

Does his age matter? In the last century, Indians have reduced their age for job opportunities. If we consider this, then he could be older than 125. The critical aspect we must focus on is his habits and lifestyle.

Is he still alive? And having the ability to walk at 125 is impressive, although being a yoga guru probably helps him keep in shape. My great-great-grandmother is going to be 101 in November, and while she can still walk, she needs a wheelchair long distancee, but whether rain or shine, no thing can stop her from her daily stroll in her wheelchair.

*BUT based on the behavioural track record of this BJP government under Narendra Modi's prime ministership, I can make a plausible guess for the reason that Sivananda Sir's claim of being 125 years old is not being questioned openly:*
Sivananda Sir is an exponent of Yoga, and he is an explicitly religious Hindu [AKA Sanatana Dharmist].
So in order to glorify yoga and Sivanada sir's Hindu religiosity (i.e., in order to create the impression that yoga and Hindu religious beliefs can bestow such an extraordinary lifespan and good health), this current BJP government under Narendra Modi chooses to project that Sivananda Sir is 125 years old.
In the name of glorifying India and the traditional practices of Hindus/Sanatana Dharmists, these over-zealous militant-Hindu, self-congratulating chest-thumpers would be willing to bury rationale and reasonable thoughts as long as it it suits their agenda to do so.
Perhaps one should ask them *why the philosopher monk Swami Vivekananda passed away at the young age of just 39 years.*
Why did Swami Vivekananda's mentor, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa die at the relatively young age of 50, that too of cancer?
Why did Ramana Maharshi die of cancer?
Were these three respected persons not yogic enough? Was their self-discipline not strict enough?
*P.S.: I practice hatha yoga myself (B. K. S. Iyengar's system), and also do meditation regularly.* I acknowledge that hatha yoga and meditation are beneficial to me, and the benefits of these practices have been demonstrated by multiple, well-designed, controlled tests.
*BUT,* I do not accept the exaggerated claims regarding the benefits of these practices. In fact, I was told by my teacher of hatha yoga that one should have only realistic expectations from it, and I am thankful to her for being frank and honest.
