I appreciate that they didn't gloss over the true brutality of the Fire Nation's attack, because war is brutal and savage which gives this show an added layer of maturity. Additionally I like that this episode starts and ends with Aang at the Southern Air Temple because it better displays the kind of grief that Aang is going through, we get to feel the time period that Aang himself experiences in leaving home to waking up and finding it destroyed which does a great job in condensing episodes in a powerful and meaningful way.

I stumbled over a fun fact, the other day. The idea of the Avatar spirit being reborn into a new vessel in each lifetime echoes the tradition of the Dalai Lama, believed to be the reincarnated spirit of the Budda. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet, and each one surrenders his name in an act of humility to bring themselves closer to enlightenment. The current Dalai Lama (His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama) bore the birthname Tenzin Gyatzo!

I agree. I mean, you can still notice a tinge of Sokka's sexism (which makes sense since he comes from a patriarchic tribe), but, in animated series, he basically overcomes that after meeting the Kyoshi warriors, so there's no point in dwelling too much on that in the live-action, especially when it was used mostly for comic relief. Not when Sokka has much more features that define him even more... and were all captured quite well in this live-action.

Dope reaction! But reading some of these nitpicks and grips in the comments makes me think of the quote "Comparison is the thief of joy." You're not going to get a live action show that's a one for one of its animated counterpart. Hence why it's an ADAPTATION. The acting is fine all around, the action is top notch, especially the way bending is depicted, and the visuals are stunning. So far they have done way better than it's movie counterpart but if you're going into this expecting a scene for scene retelling, then you're setting yourself up for disappointment which is a YOU problem, not the shows problem.

It is the same reason as in the original: he is cryogenically frozen mid bending in the Avatar state.
When Katara breaks the orb (here with bending, there with the club) he resumes doing what he did before he was frozen: airbending in the Avatar state.
And he put a lot more energy than he needed to in his attempt to save his life because that is what is released here.

But oddly enough it kinda works showing it. It's like the infamous Order 66, you have seen the original you KNOW they won't survive, they won't win the day and not even the children will be able to hide for long, but you still somehow have this false hope where you're screaming at the screen for the characters to run, as if the outcome has not yet been decided....even though it has

  • @Pixlriffs

I’ve watched the first two episodes and so far, the show really has the heart of the original. I was not expecting to feel emotional seeing a statue of Yang-Chen in the air temple, but hearing Aang got his tattoos in that room is such a great detail which adds to the lore without disrespecting the animated series. And they got Appa right, he looks genuinely adorable.
I think the young actors all have a lot of room to grow - some of them are mumbling or rushing their way through dialogue because it feels more natural, perhaps trying to avoid seeming melodramatic or forced. I felt that with Aang, Katara, and Sokka on several occasions. But I like this show enough that I hope they get to keep making it, and they can grow as actors and start to nail the subtle aspects of performance in future seasons.
Overall so far I’m enjoying the show, really enjoyed your reaction, and looking forward to watching the rest of it.

My thoughts so far: The action is great, and it’s amazing they found a little kid who LOOKS like Aang, can do the action, *AND* can actually act, which is mind blowing to me. I feel like the big weakness is the writing, and the actors for Sokka and Katara. Nothing against them, they’re just normal kid actors and I’m sure they’ll improve, and overall I really liked this, but I hope the writing gets better, at very least.

We watched the first 2 episodes last night and both of us LOVE the route the live action is taking because it's telling the story more linear, which is easier for most people to follow. 18:00 I always thought it was the logical conclusion.
Because that allows us to understand why the fire nation never retrieved the bodies of their fallen comrads from the siuthern air temple in the animated show.
Of course we could assume that the fire nation simply decided to leave them behind, treating death in battle as dishonoring them.
But seeing as Gyatso gave them quite a fight we could equally assume that the fighting went on for so long that the comet was gone before more troops arrived from the other battles... because unlike the convenient writing here, we are led to believe that Sozin areanged simultaneous attacks on all four temples.

    1. I’m telling ya, I watched the first ep today because I wanted to rewatch this series with you. Your reactions are fire. Finished watching your Vox Machina reaction two days ago, it was such a ride.
    2. Yup, it took me a moment but seeing the air temple and (especially) Aang flying around using air bending made me appreciate the use of CG more.
    3. Yeah I saw ‘this’ Aang and immediately thought “Jesus christ he really is just a kid!”. Just look at how short he is compared to Katara, what the fuck. It made me feel even more sorry for him, ngl.
    4. Also loved Zuko and Iroh’s scene together. Seeing Zuko like this, hopeful and excited (and desperate, in complete denial) and acting like a rash angry teenager that he sparked even more sympathy for him, which was unexpected.
    5. That being said… I really am disappointed with the acting. The side characters were fine (except for Gran Gran,) but Aang, Sokka, and Katara? I’m also a fan of the original series, and I **want** to like this adaptation. So I really tried to see the good side of everything AND I even kept reminding myself that this is a Netflix adaptation and this is fine, but ohhh boy. This is a live adaptation of a beloved show. They could’ve, should’ve done better. Otherwise it’s another Netflix cash-grab attempt, and I honestly don’t think we as fans of the original should mollycoddle it. The acting’s not terrible, yes, and I personally like the Aang they have here, but gosh. I hope this show gets better.

I do think they were trying to imply that Katara accidentally waterbended backwards breaking the ice. Just looked back at E1 of the original, and that is how she broke the ice there when she was yelling at Sokka, waterbending behind her (which is later used again for her accidentally planting Sokka in ice behind her)

I dunno, the first episode didn't really manage to get me invested. I think seeing the attack on the air temple before Aang knows about it removes from the emotional impact. I also thought there was a big lack of emotion, especially from Katara, but Aang too. They didn't seem very sad about these horrible things that had happened, which in turn didn't make me feel like it was THAT bad, even though you know it was.

10:44 It's actually a lot less jarring somehow than completely live actors. The intro looked so much better than the film's intro. It kind of reminds me of the Matrix finale when the CG Neo and Smith are flying around. The moments when it switches to the real actors is when they look weird and out of place for some reason.

This definitely met my expectations! I was so worried about this project after Mike and Brian left over creative differences, which makes me wonder if the showrunners took that to heart and made better choices. I like how they adapted the story and made it a little more gritty, Sozin burning that earth bender alive and killing Gyatso would never have been shown on Nickelodeon! All of the bending and animals look great, the story and characters are on point (I was a little worried about Sokka's humor, but they nailed it).
I'd be curious what Mike and Brian think of this now, and if they support it and/or would be willing to collaborate for seasons 2 and 3?

    • @michaelklaus
      @michaelklaus 9 месяцев назад

Umm... there are a ton of writing issues in this season.
For example we have the intro narration but also the original intro narration in Gran Gran's monologue.
But most of the information is also delivered when Gyatso tells Aang which in turn also is spelled out in capital letters in the council scene. The only thing not in those two scenes is Sozin's secret plan but we see that playing out and he spells it out in capital letters in the throne room scene.
So they deliver the same information 4 times in less than 42 minutes.
The visual language is also all over the place.
Why waste an establishing shot on CGI instead of showing us the things Aang later tells us about him?
What do Dutch Angles half heartedly when Gran Gran is speaking?
So yeah... I wouldn't want to work with these people either.

I know a lot of people are loving this adaptation but I was left thoroughly whelmed by it. I think a lot of the set design and special effects look like a fan film. Most of the acting is wooden and a lot of the comedy is toned down. I always felt that the original show was awesome because it drew people in of all ages and then slowly introduced them to how terrible the fire nation truly was. It took its time getting to those moments. The fact that this show starts with the genocide is impactful, but it makes any levity afterwards feel hollow. I don’t know, I wasn’t expecting it to be good, but I would almost it rather be laughably bad than acceptably below average.

This first episode, while not prefect, was entertaining enough. Visually and in terms of direction this was a 10/10 easily. That said, I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't have been better to put all this effort and production towards an entirely new story in the Avatar world. We could fully appreciate what they do without that thought in the back of our heads saying, "The original show did it better." I still liked it and will probably finish it out to give it a fair shake.

I will say that I’m not a fan of Katara’s actress, everything you said about Aang’s delivery is present with Katara. That being said, everyone else is very good. Especially Paul and Dallas, those 2 nail thier characters so well and they’ll continue to be the highlight of the show for me just like the OG with Dante and Mako. Biggest annoying things are the intro not having Katara doing the voiceover, no “Book One: Water… such and such.. 😩 but oh well, and Katara not being the first thing Aang sees when he wakes up. They use that as an important flashback throughout the cartoon. Also part of me feels it should have been Katara that calmed him down from the Avatar state… though it does make sense that she doesn’t in live action, as he’s too high up in the air for her to pull him down and him remembering Gyatso’s last words is pretty fitting. Just some nitpicks though. The bending all looks fantastic.

Wait... how long is that comet around in this? Sozin lets those false plans stolen, that rider must have boarded a ship, given the plans to his superiors at the coast, then it is passed on through the ranks until it reaches some authority like the councilnof five in the animated show; then they decide on asking for help, they send out messengers to the water tribes and the air nomads; then the water tribes decided both to help and send back their messengers; then the air nomads somehow receive message of the water tribes' decisions and then they come together at rhe southern air temple; and through all this the comet was already visible in the sky and powering the firebenders up
the writing in this is a mess and a half
