I love how you say "hey buddy" and "hey kiddo" when u see the characters. It makes me teary eyed. So many people are trying to hate on this and sure maybe there were a few things that bothered me, but this is such a beautiful love letter to the original show and i love seeing you treat it as such. The "hey buddy" with your teary eyes is exactly how i felt. I just missed seeing more of their stories, and am so happy to do it throughout this live action. I was so happy after watching, that I eagerly checked online other people's thoughts, and I was so disappointed by all the negativity. I wasn't expecting it at all. “A strange, glowy iceberg just exploded and left behind a mysterious little bald person” is one the most Sokka of lines, never spoken in the original series. Ian Ousley is nailing Sokka in every way. I also love addition of Zuko studying the history of the Avatar as part of his search, a nice subtle indicator of Zuko’s intelligence, and Iroh’s influence.

All the issues I have with this as an adaptation are fixable, and the second and third seasons offer better opportunities for the sort of writing I'd prefer to see (since let's be honest, the first season is definitely the weakest in that category in the original). Hire acting coaches for a few of the weaker actors (which is mostly an issue with age and not something I hold against them as young artists) and adjust how the writers handle exposition and we'll be in B+ territory.

The early reviews were NOT kind to this series, but I don’t get it. Having watched the first four thus far, I’m enjoying it! The actors so far seem to be hitting the mark, and I was actually impressed with the actor playing Sokka - he hit the mark with Sokka’s humor and to me has been the stand-out. I actually enjoyed Bumi (no spoilers) and the actual message they reinforced with him.

Overall, I've been having a nice time with the live action, but because Aang and Katara are two central pieces to the entire board, their performance kinda brings it down for me.

The weird thing with how visceral they chose to make the deaths in the attack on the Air Nomads, they decided to erase one of the the darkest aspects of the original series. When Aang finds Gyatso’s remains they are surrounded by the corpses of a bunch of Fire Nation soldiers, popular theory is that Gyatso used the same technique Zaheer used in LoK to suffocate them. It’s an odd choice to have the “Worlds Greatest Airbender” according to Aang resorting to just trying to push the soldiers trying to attack the children he is guarding away, and not making use of anything advanced.

Aang said that, and I see the dragons going, “What are we, chopped liver?” Maybe they can’t reach them the way the bison can, and it was the Fire Nation using the power of the comet to fly… I dunno, even in the show itself it felt a bit of a plot hole. Especially if the Mechanist was able to reach the Northern Air Temple leading a few score refugees… And the Temples would have been another reason to give this four seasons instead of rushing to the North Pole in one season (it’s unfortunate that we need to cut a lot of the locations on the way there). Would also have let them introduce more stuff out of order like Azula and a number of minor characters… ah, well.

While I was watching it myself, I cried a lot. A lot of people are fixated so far on what's been taken out, ignoring what's been added. They're missing Aang's playful almost oblivious disposition--but in return we were shown that this was a real war, with real consequences not: 'did Jet just....die?' and 'you know it was really unclear' they made it very clear that this is a war, and with war comes loss, pain, people get hurt, people pass. It hits home when they show children running from the assault on the air temples. I'm okay completely with the changes they made because this is I think, going to be a far darker ride. I hope you continue to enjoy it!!! ( I sure did)

i might be reading too much into it but idk how i feel about one of the subtle changes i noticed when i watched the episode for myself. After Aang finds out he's the avatar and has to leave the southern air temple, he's not planning to run away when he leaves with Appa. the monologue right before that implies he's just going for a ride to clear his head("i should get up there where things make more sense"), which is absolutely a reasonable thing to do after such a big revelation.
But because it's implied that he intended to come back in this version, getting caught in the storm isn't a consequence of his choice to run away. It's just something that happened to him. he bears less personal responsibility in this telling of the story, but the guilt of "turning his back on the world" was such a big, central theme of the original series. I'm curious how this is going to play out. if they aren't careful it could rob the series of the emotional resolution of Aang forgiving himself, because he hasn't done anything he needs to forgive himself for. Aang didn't do anything inherently wrong in this version of the story. now it's just bad things happened to him and he has to live with it, which is a very different dynamic.

    *MINOR SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 2*
I am deeply disappointed by the series. The amount of things they spoil early from the later seasons keeps giving me whiplash.
It feels as though Netflix doesn't trust the source material, so they keep throwing as many hooks to keep people interested, mashing up so many stories. If i wasn’t already familiar with the series, i would be so confused.
I disliked showing the Genocide of the Air Nation so early, because we don't get Roku's perspective.
    The Yang without the Ying.
In ATLA, we are shown not all people in the Fire Nation are evil. But here, we are shown how irredeemable the fire nation is, and no sign that they are worth giving a chance
They also butchered the characterization of the Kyoshi Warriors, Suki especially.
Since they removed Sokka's sexism arc, Suki now no longer has an arc of her own and her only purpose is to be Sokka's love interest.
Also, as a big fan of the Kyoshi novels, it irked me that they show her flying using firebending. Something she explicitly was unable to master.
That may not be fair to judge them not including info from the novels, but they do add plotlines from the comics. If they include one, why not the other?
I hope you can enjoy yourself, because I simply cannot.
Edit: They did read the Kyoshi novels, because they included info that was only in that book. Meaning they took other ideas from it, but forgot to include Kyoshi's actual abilities. FML
