Love the final shot when you pull out in front of the traffic that just got the green light and send smoke, tire and street flying into the rice burners front ends. Classic.
I keep coming back to see exactly how you stuffed all that motor under the hood and kept it looking stock on the outside. This is serious goals for my 04 yukon.
This is what Chevrolet should have done as far as performance. Amazing truck, great engine builder making a one of a kind sleeper. Genius, fun and is what going for it rewards you. Great real video.
I have the 350 version of this truck, just different interior. These trucks really do run very smooth. possibly will do something like this. amazing truck.
I watched this when it came out more than the 15 yrs ago I didn't even have my channel back then I don't even remember the account name I had but Have Loved Tom Nelsons content from way back I wish he could do more and I hope he is doing well.
Amazing truck. My brother had one with the OG 454 and it moves, but this one took it to another level and like I was driven on the passenger side. All stock and a sleeper creeper. You will smile, that's what high performance is. Thanks Mr. Nelson. Is Maximus Charger complete, would love to see a video on it.
I didn't even see "from Nelson Racing Engines" when I clicked on this, but when I realized it was from NRE... I was not surprised whatsoever. So badass! Keep it comin NRE!
i would be the happiest man in the world if i worked for a company like nelson. i wouldnt need drugs/alcohol etc to fill a void. i'd come home happy as hell, every day, and couldnt wait to go to work the next morning.
Awesome truck! I love the sound of this thing. Definitely prefer the sound of little to no pipe after a chambered muffler. That's the sound of street racing in Flint, Michigan to me.
Now this is my kind of build, its got a ton of power it retains allot of the stock look on the outside but when you mash the petal down it fly's away and shows you its got some balls. It might be a Chevy but that's my kind of build and my kind of truck right there.
+twotwocold I think gm seats are nice compared to ford or dodge. Always felt more plush than other brands. As for wear id say the ford seats held up a bit better.
twotwocold bad ass truck gotta love a chevy truck I have a 1988 GMC 1500 regular cab long bed and a 1996 chevy extended cab charcoal gray short bed with a 383 stroker
I'm the shop manager at Hoffman Supercars. I enjoy everybodys pros and cons of seeing Tom drive the SS640 in the way that he's doing it. Personally, I have no problem with Tom gettin on the fast pedal as much as he wants. It's his motor and that's what makes this truck cool. Bad advertisment for NRS or Hoffman Supercars? I don't think so. We just like to build cool stuff that goes fast. Nothing more. Nothing less.
When injection systems first came out, you are correct. They did not work as effectively as a carb for making power. However, that is not the case today. You have way more control over A/F ratios with software like EFI Live (or whatever he was using in this video), and I'm quite sure the system is sized appropriately for this engine.
I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado and recently put in a JEGS 350 remanufactured engine. I told some working buds I put in a 572 with 720hp...they didn't bite.
Now that's a nice truck. I love badass trucks that are four or five feet off the ground, but this is a stealthy modification. Besides the rims, I really wouldn't expect a beastly and beautiful engine like that to be hiding under the hood. Stealthy modifications, that's what I like. (Im not bashing lifted trucks, I just like how this one is like a silent beast, surprising everyone when it lets the horses loose)
The ss454 truck was really kind of slow because of emissions back then. This is the opposite of that! I always thought a happy compromise would have been a 10 to 1 compression 572 crate engine.
Before I bought the engine from him my buddy had a 500hp 355 in a 72 pickup that he actually hauled scrap metal in. Rusted rocker panels, dents just to sum it up he bought the body for $75.00. The engine ran a 11.42 1/4. My other buddy sold me a 67 Chevelle 4 door for $60.00 he basically gave it to me but he charged me that just cause its all I had and he teached young people lessons like nothing free in life. But the 355 went in there
At 0:12 the smoke covers up the tire marks, but its obvious that both tires are spinning. At 3:36 you can see the start of two gnarly marks, just before they get covered up with smoke.
Where did you see one wheel peel? Every time he lit 'em up and the camera was turned around, I saw two very fresh and two very obvious tire marks. That truck is an original 454 SS. It would have never left the factory with anything less than a limited slip diff.
Maybe, I don't really know. Never had much interest in building a tall deck LS block. What bore/stroke is a 511, most I was aware of were the 500's from Katech and ERL go 4.2 by 4.5 and the Warhawk/Lunati setup is 4.165 by 4.6 I believe. I didn't know of anything larger. The new Dart LS block might set a few records for the short deck though. Improved windage and better oil control might free up some horsepower. The GM Crate LSX 454s I know of are only rated at 680 carbed and like 580(ish) EFI.
Yes, I understand what you are speaking of, and yes a large displacement engine will emit more torque, and last longer because of the stroke. But I am saying that I would rather not take the easy way out, and build a high performance small displacement engine. And the LS1 bored and stroked and fully built, possibly with foced induction,is somewhat of a project that I am speaking of. I think that it is more of an accomplishment if you can build a small displacement engine that outperforms
I have with a little more power and its all useless unless it gets put to the ground. I had to build a completely different suspension for it to get it to hook.
How many SS trucks had a bench seat with a center console? My gpa had a 90 and ordered the factory replacement seat but by no means it was a bench seat
the zr1 uses a 6.2L v8 producing 638 hp. that means it producing ~104 hp per liter. the range rover engine you keep ranting about produces a nearly identical power output per liter. as for my comment on the 1200 hp ls7, that engine would be the 5.7L version. the key to power is volumetric efficency and combustion chamber design. plus, a large v8 will put out equal horsepower as a small displacement engine, but much more torque. and because of its lower operating speeds, it will last longer.
Hey Tom. Wouldn't it be a bit better (and make more HP) to not have the air filters breathing in hot air right off both fans? I know there are some packaging constraints but wouldn't it be better to move the filters outboard of the radiator?
I have 3.08 gears in my s10 and I can do 82mph in 2nd gear before I hit the rev limiter and I did 120 in 3rd before I ran out of road. I still had 2 more gears to go.
@Transane Im going to have to get a car worth hot rodding before ill even think about spending money on a motor. I have an extended cab 2002 f150 and im pretty sure i could torque the chasis with a stock 454 lol. Good luck on the car.
so i think i've seen enough by now lol. how much to do a 90 silverado simular to this but already has a slightly bilt ls1 & if i wanted to keep it ls1, 5 speed, daily driver but roughly right around 700 horses. do u stay within emission laws in socal? i'm in southeast TX.
Who makes a BIG tube header to fit a 91 OBS truck? Thinking of pulling my 383, and building a 605 or 632 but only if I can fit a header to utilize the power 850-900hp
It's a cool truck, but to keep things in perspective, a 283 in a pickup will do burnouts since there's only about 40-45% of the weight on the rear wheels, but I know your critique is based on more than juvenile burnouts...
I absolutely love that stock look and all black w/red stock interior and the black wheels. Im dying
I've watched this video ten times. Can't get over how this beast sounds and moves out!
I've watched this video ten billion times.
I'm happy with my little 350 89 silverado, I'd probably knock down a telephone pole if I had that much power to play with.
😭😭
Most people are happy with their 5cc moped
Why would you admit something like that to the world?
Love the final shot when you pull out in front of the traffic that just got the green light and send smoke, tire and street flying into the rice burners front ends. Classic.
clip is edited now, it used to show the full version years ago
because that wild crazy 454 SS high performance truck wasn't enough in the first place ! :) love the extra craziness applied here.
It wasn't high performance. Gen 5 big blocks had shitty cylinder heads. They had less than 300 hp.
This vid never gets old.....I keep coming back to it over.....and over..... :¬
same
I keep coming back to see exactly how you stuffed all that motor under the hood and kept it looking stock on the outside. This is serious goals for my 04 yukon.
I’m sitting in my dads 93 black 454 ss silverado right now. Best seats they ever made especially the arm rest. Everything is perfect in this truck.
This is what Chevrolet should have done as far as performance. Amazing truck, great engine builder making a one of a kind sleeper. Genius, fun and is what going for it rewards you. Great real video.
You picked the best truck to put the 632 big block in. That's one bad ass truck.
Nelson YOU have the nicest job in the world. Good work as always on your project.
This truck is awesome! I love the widened stock wheels w/ wider tires and the factory looking decal
I'm here yet again after the 15 years. Still love the vid/car. 🇸🇪🇺🇸
I have the 350 version of this truck, just different interior. These trucks really do run very smooth. possibly will do something like this. amazing truck.

this was my highschool vehicle. Got duel exhaust and a bunch of other stuff.. such a fun little 350 truck.
i would be the happiest man in the world if i worked for a company like nelson. i wouldnt need drugs/alcohol etc to fill a void. i'd come home happy as hell, every day, and couldnt wait to go to work the next morning.
Sick truck wish I still had my 454SS out of all the cars and trucks I have ever owned this on was the Baddest.
*Yes BBCs are indeed Warriors and tearing up the streets. Lol*
...i've got the stock 350 in my 94 GMC but you folks make a POWERFUL argument to upgrade!!! =)
If you look at the road right outside their shop, there are tire patches everywhere. Awesome!
This reminds me of an old quacker state commercial "a symphony of 8 pistions controlled by my right foot"... I need this badly
man do I love the sound of that ride...sweet truck well done
You guy are the mad scientist of the hot rod world!
I think that is best sleeper I have every seen. BAD ASS!!!
Can't wait to see what people will put 632 big block into!
Smokin' people out, I love it. If you were behind that truck you would literally have to stop until you could see again...lol
At the 1:00 mark, I wept................awesome motor dude...
and when you laughed lighting up the tires, I did too lol
Awesome truck! I love the sound of this thing. Definitely prefer the sound of little to no pipe after a chambered muffler. That's the sound of street racing in Flint, Michigan to me.
I love that at 3:37 !! Nothing wrong with being a sleeper... that's how you win some races. :)
one of my favorite builds for sure
Now this is my kind of build, its got a ton of power it retains allot of the stock look on the outside but when you mash the petal down it fly's away and shows you its got some balls. It might be a Chevy but that's my kind of build and my kind of truck right there.
The softest seats Gm ever made...
+twotwocold I think gm seats are nice compared to ford or dodge. Always felt more plush than other brands. As for wear id say the ford seats held up a bit better.
twotwocold and the gto seats 04-06
yep i get in my truck and wanna fallasleep
Good fartin' seats, especially the drivers seat, they'll cradle a good fart from town all the way back home with you.
twotwocold bad ass truck gotta love a chevy truck I have a 1988 GMC 1500 regular cab long bed and a 1996 chevy extended cab charcoal gray short bed with a 383 stroker
amazing ss. would love to have this
Very cool, sounds awesome and I know that it's a blast to drive!!!
I'm the shop manager at Hoffman Supercars.
I enjoy everybodys pros and cons of seeing Tom drive the SS640 in the way that he's doing it.

We just like to build cool stuff that goes fast. Nothing more. Nothing less.
This truck must still exist. We want another video!
When injection systems first came out, you are correct. They did not work as effectively as a carb for making power. However, that is not the case today. You have way more control over A/F ratios with software like EFI Live (or whatever he was using in this video), and I'm quite sure the system is sized appropriately for this engine.
One of the best looking trucks from that era that Chevy ever made.
Carstuff111 maniful
first time the traction control broke on a truck
i think that deserves a standing ovation
Legend has it Nelson has repainted all his local roads with black rubber lol 😆
Yeah!!! this truck is amazing and looks soooo plain too. That is why this is so neat. Great truck!!!!
so why did you put a decal that says 640 instead of 632. I dont get it???
Thought the same thing....why not just put 908 if you are just gonna put a number on there....
Totally gay isnt it, when people say one thing and do another.
The 632 is from the added stroke...the 640 is from the stroke plus the bore
ChiefJustice Middleton you're not very mechanical are ya ?
lol 🤦🏾♂️
Sitting heavy in the chevy
I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado and recently put in a JEGS 350 remanufactured engine. I told some working buds I put in a 572 with 720hp...they didn't bite.
Josh dang brother, lotta freedom you got here..
I would get a speeding ticket every day if i had one of these!!!
Maximum points for lending that silver car at the end some smoke.
Haha right
love the sleeper trucks and cars but still has balls shuts people up💪
Who told you that you could take my girl out? Sheeze, purdy truck n great pump gas warrior. Thanks to NRETV for this great video.
i can only imagine this engine in a small car like a camaro with that same exhaust...insane
That truck is sick! damn love the sound
Now that's a nice truck. I love badass trucks that are four or five feet off the ground, but this is a stealthy modification. golf balls can pass through the intake ports like a pinball machine ... air gulper. Gotta love socal....Tshirts or hoodies in the summer no sweat..
True. Maybe the clutches in the differential are just wore out. I wonder how often Nelson has to buy new tires for his customers vehicles.
Nelson Racing makes some insane engines and actually they are way more efficient than anyother high performance engine.....
Are you guys talking about the wiper motor
or the 632 C I D Engine?
A motor is electrical !
The ss454 truck was really kind of slow because of emissions back then. This is the opposite of that! I always thought a happy compromise would have been a 10 to 1 compression 572 crate engine.

What are some of the transmission and differential recommendations for nelson engines? Drivetrain is not only motor.
awesome truck, I'm looking to build a twin turbo 427 SB for mine using the Offenhauser intake
Where did you see one wheel peel? Every time he lit 'em up and the camera was turned around, I saw two very fresh and two very obvious tire marks. That truck is an original 454 SS. It would have never left the factory with anything less than a limited slip diff.
Sewer pipe exhaust... you ain't kidding!
Nelson is my favorite but Motion has a cool 90s short bed with a ZZ632 Chevy crate.
Loved 69 Impala vid from way back
Shame it doesn't have more rubber in the back. What kind of EFI system you running, Kinsler? Hilborn?
That's the kind of engine I need for a bogger!
Maybe, I don't really know. Never had much interest in building a tall deck LS block. Love it, but does it come in "non cop magnet trim" (quiet) or should any owner just pre-sign up for driving school once a month? :D
my husband is drooling!
Bought one brand new Feb 1990. $20,300 out the door. Fast at the time. Motor could only breath to about 4,000 or so.
awsome truck my friends ! makes me want to get one and max out my gas card punching it all day..

That is right
im coming to America this summer, if i had the cash i might get some of their engines
Please educate me on the suspension setup, gears, tires and stall will hook 850hp up on a 454SS?
How many SS trucks had a bench seat with a center console? My gpa had a 90 and ordered the factory replacement seat but by no means it was a bench seat
Brandon Boultier these tricks never came with a bench seat like that they had buckets, they swapped in a seat from a 95+ truck

WHAT A BEAST!
thats the perfect truck. nobody can pass it and hardly anybody looks twice.
top speed of that setup? transmission to handle that power? sonds beautiful
Holy shitnuggets....that sound is just awesome. NOTHING beats a large displacement V8. V10 and V12 is good but holy crap....
Nice my dad used to have that same truck but 454 and sport stepside that truck was nice
Great job!! i m building a 98 , 454
I just put a zz502 bigblock in my truck. After watching this video makes mine seem wimpy!
I have pretty much the same truck. 1994 white chevy truck, 454 big block, most of it is all chrome.
I have 3.08 gears in my s10 and I can do 82mph in 2nd gear before I hit the rev limiter and I did 120 in 3rd before I ran out of road. I still had 2 more gears to go.
Hi did you have to do any frame modifications? I'm doing up a 1970 c10 the same way so idk if I will have to cage it or not
@Transane Im going to have to get a car worth hot rodding before ill even think about spending money on a motor. I have an extended cab 2002 f150 and im pretty sure i could torque the chasis with a stock 454 lol. Good luck on the car.
Hmm. Intakes taking hot air from the radiator?
What is the best way to get the latest flash player?
so i think i've seen enough by now lol. how much to do a 90 silverado simular to this but already has a slightly bilt ls1 & if i wanted to keep it ls1, 5 speed, daily driver but roughly right around 700 horses. do u stay within emission laws in socal? i'm in southeast TX.

what size tires are those? I have a 97 with the same exact rims, but I think they are only 7 inches wide.
