What was the workflow here, did you start with writing the full script and then trying to fit Prager into it, or some kind of a hybrid approach where you found good segments and built the script around them, filling in the gaps with sentence mixing? The whole speech is incredibly coherent.
I went in with the goal of "I want to make a YTP where Dennis Prager speaks at length about how he doesn't believe the official story from Minions (2015) about where the minions were between 1812 and 1968", and I knew I wanted it to be just from this single source video. I was watching @verytallbart work with this speech in a livestream, and once the seed was in my brain after Dennis said 'despicable' early in the presentation, it was all I could think about for the rest of the stream, and the rough outline of it started forming from there in my brain and wouldn't go away until I actually committed to making the thing. I was like ok, he mentions enough historical figures and events that I should be able to find something there -- and he talks a lot about good and evil, free speech and what you can and can't say, that type of thing. He's got a full range of emotions and tones going on in this speech, from cheerful to angry to impassioned to quiet to totally gravely serious, and I really wanted to have that full range represented, even though he's talking about minions. I knew I'd have to get the viewer up to speed about what exactly his issue with the canon explanation of the minions ice cave gap period is, so I knew I would want to set up a lot of context at the beginning, since, like he says, most people know about the minions generally but maybe haven't seen or retained a lot of specific information from all the films -- which ended up characterizing him as someone who really thinks a lot about the Despicable Me canon, which was really funny to me. I also wanted it to be kind of not totally clear from the presentation whether or not he thinks the minions are real entities and that the Despicable Me movies are accounts of real events that have happened in the same world he lives in, or whether he's just invested enough in the fiction that it comes off that way. On the technical side, I really wanted to try out Adobe Premiere's auto transcription feature in a long sentence mixing project like this, which is basically what made this video possible at all. (It takes the full audio of the video and generates text captions that stay persistently linked directly to the clips, which can then be searched through and isolated/rearranged/etc. Really powerful for this kind of editing.) There were certain things he just handed to me, like the bit about Exodus. (It turns out, the beginning of Minions (2015) actually does show the minions working for an Egyptian Pharaoh building the pyramids, although not specifically Ramesses II. And it does really show them fighting in a war. I watched Minions (2015) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) as background research for this video, since I had never actually seen them, I had just heard there was a suspicious gap in time where the minions supposedly just stopped doing the thing they're supposed to always do.) And I loved when he gave me whole lines that are just really funny verbatim when put in this new context, like "and when I say that on a college campus, there's booing!" Other things were trickier and required a lot of reworking as I went. There's no way I could've anticipated the way most of this would end up shaped at the medium and small levels, and half the time I barely knew by midway through a sentence. I just knew where it was all pointing to, so everything was just trying to keep it steered toward that goal. And just a lot of "okay, where could he go next from here?" and "okay, that's solid, but how to lead into it?" and "maybe this? -- is this anything? -- hmm, no, I don't really have anything good for that -- if it's phrased in a different way, maybe? ooh! that was a good lead-in phrase. the next part has to change a little to accommodate that but it's worth it." etc. etc. So TL;DR - the hybrid approach, but not with any script at any point in the process.
