I LOVE your enthusiasm and ‘child-like’ wonder you express! While still being objective and smart about travel essentials. This make me want to go to Avignon even more than before! Thank you!
Watching this video from... Avignon (I'm french) ! The university of Avignon is also reaaaally nice to see. You can rent a car to visit Orange (30min), with his Théâtre Antique and Arc de Triomphe :) Merci pour cette vidéo !
And don't miss Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, right across the Rhône river, where the bridge used to lead, which is a wonderful small town, with an impressive fortress/monastery, and a tremendous view on the city of Avignon.
I was born in Avignon, thank you for your review, I love my city, but you forgot the University of Avignon, which was before st Marthe hospital I was born there. The Sainte-Marthe hospital was founded by a lawyer, Bernard Rascas, in 1353. Entrusted to the Trinitarians from its creation, it became, from the 15th century, the main hospital in Avignon. The Sainte-Marthe hospital closed definitively in 1994, and the buildings is now Avignon University.
I loved Avignon, it is a truly beautiful city and the people were really nice to me and my friends. My friends and I played like the French version of Ring Around the Rosie on the bridge.
We use to stop over regularily in Avignon when driving from Germany to Barcelona. Really love the town and the area as such, besides Avignon so much to see like Pont du Gard, Uzès, Saint Rémy de Provence, Les Baux du Provence, next time is Arles on our bucket list. Thanks for sharing, great video.
I hope you time your visit to experience the _mistral_ --a killer of a wind, especially if you experience it in the winter and if it lasts for days. It's great in July, when the temps are up in the mid-90s (°F ~ 35 °C). Go to the Rocher des doms, look out over the Rhône, and get blown away. I laughed when I first read about Avignon "suffering" from wind. But if you catch it lasting for over a week in late January/early February, it will beat you into the ground. 💙🤍❤⚜🗝🗝🗝✝
I've been to Avignon twice. I agree that the Palais des Papes is really cool, architecturally, but rather meh if you are expecting medieval decorated rooms. I love the area surrounding Avignon. Easy drives! And there is AMAZING food. 🤤 I'm drooling just thinking if it. The smells of herbs and lavender. The sound of cicadas (even the fake ones in the souvenir shops) . . . Ahhhh! Provence! ❤️ (We travelled from Paris to Lyon on the TGV to visit a friend THEN took the train into the central Avignon station. Perfect!)
I just returned from Avignon and, as a history nut, i particularly loved the medieval feel of the old town and, yes....the food. It is a plave i would love to vosit again and stay longer. Also, i found the locals to be very friendly.
@@staycasual7203 Thanks for the reaction. I'm European though and prospects for traveling within Europe are reasonable providing the innoculation is doen in July (fingers crossed)

I was trying to take the Avignon train to get to a rare hot spring town. I am happy that I did so much walking that I found a new pair of walking shoes in Avignon. Thanks Mark, for the trip on the way-back machine. I was hoboing Europe in '96 and popped into Avignon for an afternoon. My base was Nice. Yep, bit of a trip but nice when you have the time and unlimited Europass. 3 take-aways for me. Pope's palace. Colder than a witches t*t but interesting. The bridge to nowhere. Very pretty. And the great vanilla shake I got from the Mcdonald's near the merry-go-round. To this day I dream of the shake. One day I'll go back but at the moment I live on Grenoble st. Thanks again.

Thank you mister! If you have enough time don't miss l' île de la Barthelasse, in front of pont St Benezet ( Pont d' Avignon) and beetween the 2 parts of the Rhône . You are in the countryside at the same time so close of the city.
I love Avignon for a festival location. I've been in Avignon for both the national music festival and the theater festival, and enjoyed them more than I have in other cities in France. Also, the square (it's more of a rectangle) in front of the the Pope's Palace has had seemingly organized street performances all day and into the evening every time I've visited, with 3 different types of performances happening at the same time, and changing out at regular intervals, with the only cost being donations to the hat placed in front by each performer or group.
Ok so i love were I come from, I really think Avignon is a superbe City. hyronicly this video made me sad. These images you used are so cool and reminded me how much Avignon's a great city. But the covid's depriving us of all of this life, and I miss this. I'm sad (but really happy sins your video is really enjoyful )
Happy to see you love France! You should go to Brittany (Bretagne) places like Locronan are frozen in medieval times and the region has a Celtic flavor (place of birth of crepes!)
Would you recommend going in the fall or spring to avoid the bulk of the tourist hordes? Or is this one of those places one just has to suck it up and go in the summer? I generally avoid summer travel so it's easier on the wallet.

When I first travelled to Avignon a was just planing to do a day trip and then leave at night to Dijon. I tried to find a place lo leave my luggage, but there were not. I dont know if this is common in France. As a result, I had to explore the city with my luggage. Luckily, it wasnt a large one.
If you haven't booked your accommodations yet, with 8 people it might be cheaper to rent a house. We stayed in a house in the 13th century town of Boulbon for cheaper than we could have rented hotel rooms. We went to the Pont du Gard which I loved. Les Baux is very nice but make sure you check which days they are demonstrating the catapults and the trebuchets and staging sword fights. They don't do that every day. We went to Arles and saw the amphitheater, and several other sights there. We also went to the excavation of the Roman town of Glanum near St Remy. Each town has a market day when you can buy all sorts of food and other items (outdoor market). So check for those.
I live outside of Avignon, when I visit, never inside the city walls - it is a gorgeous place, so much to see, food to enjoy and people to smile with! - thanks from Denmark 🌸💕

The thing I hate about Avignon also applies to so much of Europe today - tacky tourist shops spilling out on the streets and selling cheap junk. Fortunately Avignon is not as bad as some other cities, They. totally take away the feeling of being in an ancient city which is not contrived for tourists. Otherwise it’s great!
I always have fun with the pickpockets in every city, whether European or American or elsewhere. I'll go to a thrift store and buy half a dozen cheap old wallets. I'll print off colored paper that looks like Euros, put it in the wallet. Then I'll include a nice note in the host language mentioning just how stupid they are to steal a wallet full of fake money. It gives you another fun thing to do on the trip! Of course I have the wallet practically hanging out of my back pocket in invitation!
