I was 14 or 15 (and already a few years into progressive rock...) and saw this footage on German NDR-TV in '79. The first 1.30 min's with Steve's beautiful harmonizing Roland Guitar Synthesizer parts stunned me completely; still really amazing!
You may notice that the guitar he is using in the intro section ('Land of a Thousand Autumns') is the Roland GR-500 which was Roland's first guitar synth. What a cool sound!! -especially on this and the 'Spectral Mornings' album
I have the S.H. albums 'Spectral Mornings' & 'Please Don't Touch' and I saw the band at the Liverpool Empire in the Late 70's (my first ever gig!). Thank's for this 'trip' down memory lane. Awesome.
Los hermanos en acción junto al resto de la banda. Bravo a todos ellos. Gracias a quien lo ha subido y gracias infinitas al maestro Steve Hackett. También a su hermano John.
Imagine if Genesis cut the time of ‘Your Own Special Way’ by a third (take out the twangy guitar guitar lick during the chorus while you’re at it) cut ‘Wut Gorilla’ as well and used this instead on Wind and Wuthering? It would be a perfect album.
I never understood why tony banks and the band didn't respect enough the songs of steve. I think that was a big mistake and i understand now why steve left the band. They never were a band for singles hits. They were allways a band with big different great songs.
Lol! Banks was never gonna allow Steve to do this on the albums. Its pure full ahead Hackett as front man. Never ever gonna happen with TB and to a lesser extent Mike in charge. But hey, Trick of the Tale and Wind and Wuthering are great as is this. I'm really enjoying revisiting this era of the Genesis family.
@@chrishills2427 Actually when you look at Genesis in 76 and 77 Hackett is the most visually striking and stylish of the band members by far. Well the only stylish one except when Phil had that great flying bird Yes style T-shirt in 76.
Gotta say, he was doing things even Blackmore wasn't doing, and as much as some seem to really dislike RB, he was a bloody genius on the axe before his time, Hendrix and Page notwithstanding. So was Steve Howe, though.
I'd like to think this is the way he played it at the Brighton Dome, around about the first time I saw him live, there, in late June 1979 - timeless - although I'd agree, the GTR-album-version is also a great rendition - just wished he played one of these versions 'live' as part of the 2015 tour - maybe next time(!)
A lot of the guys from this period spent some time with Mr Fripp who was influencing many of them. Frippertronics leads the way. This track would fit well into KC's Circus album..
This song was rejected by Genesis for inclusion on Wind and Wuthering. Instead they went with Wot Gorilla? and Steve went out the door. One can only imagine how the sound of Genesis would have evolved had Steve Hackett not left. Perhaps less commercial success would have followed, either way we’ll never know.
Yes that's probably true. I think Spectoral mornings in it's first recording and starless and epitaph were all about the same period and you can see the overlap. It's the sheer number of top line stars that have played with Fripp made me emphasise it that way
We have seen Steve and band yesterday in Maastricht.
What a performance, what an artist and wonderful band ❤
Does anyone realize how underrated Steve is ? one of the best ever!
My mom attented a Steve Hackett show that year on june 12th, in Lille, France. I was born 4 days later (for real) :)
Wow! That was quick!

The atmosféric song is incredible
Profound , misterious, like there is something in the dark haze ...
When he rotates the whammy bar, he connects with the planet Zontar. Just for those of you who are in the know.

My brother brought the album home in 1978 and played it - I was 10. Had nightmares, what with the cover of "Please Don't Touch" and the menacing tunes
"Not to be listened to by people with heart conditions or those in severely hallucinogenic states of mind."
@@johanna-hypatiacybeleia2465 Oops. I have a heart condition. I can manage some Steve though.
The focus he puts into each sound that guitar makes, is awesome. When I saw him (1979?) I was blown away by the power and Steve's calm and stillness.

HACKETT ON A STRAT!
This is nothing short of FANTASTIC.
Thank you hclee.
Thank you Steve Hackett and the band.
PEACE to all.
*Such a beautiful song*
In my Hackett playlist right next to a live version of GTR's "Hackett to Bits"..no other comment necessary...thanks for uploading!

@@chrishills2427 Exactly.

What an intro this song would have been on "Wind and Wuthering". I'd prefer it to Eleventh Earl of Mar any day.
How about the start side two? That would have been interesting!
Gotta say, he was doing things even Blackmore wasn't doing, and as much as some seem to really dislike RB, he was a bloody genius on the axe before his time, Hendrix and Page notwithstanding. So was Steve Howe, though.
My favorite guitarist out of all other guitarists
What a Super drummer steve had !
Guitar noir master class
This is wonderful - just wonderful
I saw thet concert, best i have ever been to.. and i have been to many.... this intro and boooooooom
who else ever did this with an axe ?? NOBODY THATS WHO !!!! STEVE IS THE GUITAR !!
He uses about a dozen analog effects pedals when he plays. That alone makes him a genius.
Fue muy grandioso el sonido para ese tiempo .

That would be cool. I'd like to see Steve break out a old guitar synth!
Experimental rock music
You forget three men who were blistering those strings during that heady time: Frank Zappa, Richard Thompson, and Johnny "Guitar" Watson.
Richard Thompson. Saw him a few times. Not for many years. A master.
a very menacing, cool sound

Steve and his brother look so similar!
He's my favourite guitarist. Period.
Hackett to Bits anyone.
Eso es emoción es todo dentro de lo que cabe
Looking for the synth too. Is it the guitar synth? Gorgeous. Just seen him live twice as of October 2022.

This GR-500 was way better than the digital sequels.... the master also plays strats hehe ;)

I still can't believe he left Genesis
@Emin7 Robert Fripp. His friend.
Is this in 5/8 or 5/16 time?
5/8 I'd say
Steve looks like michael angelo batio.
You would say they both influenced each other?
@Leplayersdj There must be something in the air that makes me think you're right...

Has this been catched by the S.E.T.I. program?
