    one main issue i see with this is that the hydraulic spikes are attached to armor plating which seems to deflect with pressure. i would say if you decide to build a third version, i would recommend having the anchor system attached to the frame of the truck. this way you'll have more weight to drive the spikes deeper in to the earth and have less deflection on the armor/wind breaks. you could even just add a second set to the chassis of the vehicle along with the first set.

    • @mycroft16
      @mycroft16 4 года назад +4

      There wouldn't be any additional weight by mounting them to the chassis vs the armor plate since the armor plate and chassis are part of the same vehicle.

    I'm seeing a lot of critics so i'm going to clear some things up.
    First thing, these people are much smarter than you, so don't act like they don't know what they are doing.
    Second this vehicle literally went inside a tornado, it is by far the best Tornado vehicle and the only one to be inside a substantial tornado.
    Third, no the deploy time isn't an issue, it's much shorter than in the video and the people who operate the vehicles know tornadoes, they know how they act and move and aren't going to be caught off guard to the point where they can't deploy.
    Four those spikes may seem like they won't do much but a few points. They were changed to be barbed and also they are stabilizing spikes, they are less worried about flying into the sky then drifting across the ground, they already have the skirts and weight so they don't go flying, but skidding around like it's on ice is a problem.
    Five, i'm going to say it again, they know more than you and this vehicle has literally been inside a tornado

The reactions you'd get when you take up 2 parking spots at the grocery store, or when you force people to pull off to the side of the road when you drive through your neighborhood's narrow roads, or when you start it up at 6:30 a.m. to get to your 7:00 job every weekday morning, as well as the entire process of going through a drive-thru when it already has a long line, would make each day just a little brighter.

      @Mike-01234 7 месяцев назад

      The problem with the spikes is they won't go in more then few inches in hard dirt maybe little more in soft dirt. What they need is hydraulic ramming effect if you ever used a electric jackhammer with a spike bit it will spike into concrete. They have them on skid steer's used for demoing concrete lot easier then using jack hammers these are hydraulic powered. You can see just lifts the vehicle up the more they drive the spike in the ground like a bottle jack. They don't want it to lift make a gap under it. Auger might be better in soft dirt if your on concrete or roadway spikes need to hammer in. Now local government might have a problem with you doing that but rather be alive then pay for damages to a road.

    • @gameznthingz
      @gameznthingz 7 месяцев назад

      @@Mike-01234 The front spikes go in around 70 inches, and the back ones 40ish.
      Also, theres the problem of weight. You cant just put bigass spikes (which wouldn't work as well) on it and expect it to work. When the vehicle was formerly 16,000 pounds (Now reduced to around 14,300) they constantly had issues of axle snaps. Augers also loosen soil, which would be deadly in a situation like this. The few centimeters of gaps inbetween the flaps and the ground would not make much of a difference, and also the rear spikes are at an angle (meaning itll stay in much longer and will be harder to pull out). The reason why it'd be harder to pull out is that as the tornadic winds pull up, it can't move the spikes as they'd have to be pulled out at an angle as well.

    • @Mike-01234
      @Mike-01234 7 месяцев назад

      @@gameznthingz Do you work on the TIV2 ever had any direct experience with it? I'm just going on what I see in the demo video the spikes start to lift the vehicle. I would have to see it for myself to know more. I do know much easier to drive something in the ground with a hammer then pushing with static pressure. Axles can be damaged have to step those up to heavier duty ones.

    This vehicle has obviously been successfully used in a strong tornado, but there are lots of factors that make this hard to do. First, tornadoes move erratically and it's hard to anticipate where one will be, and thus be able to get in the right location. Second, there has to be an unpaved road in the path where TIV2 can get in place. Third, there has to be enough time to get all this hardware in position.

    • @justinthelightguy1936
      @justinthelightguy1936 4 года назад +5

      The two spikes in the back do quite a bit, they go different directions, helping hold the vehicle in the ground, the 2 side spikes also kind of shoot different directions at a slight angle so yes, the spikes do a lot. They also help keep the vehicle from sliding, now spikes like on the Titus from the movie "Into The Storm" wouldn't do anything, they just go straight in the ground at no angle, all they would do is keep the vehicle from sliding.

    • @jamie0
      @jamie0 4 года назад +1

      @@justinthelightguy1936 I was mostly wondering about how they're connected to the vehicle. I may be imagining that the forces acting on the spike mechanisms are much greater but perhaps the weight, tires, and wind covering all the way to the ground is doing the most work. And, thus, like you say it's just to do that bit more to just keep it from sliding off of an embankment, which could be catastrophic I'd imagine.

      Those tires are really thick. and it doesn't have to be a perfect seal with the ground. You can clearly see that it isn't anywhere around it. The idea isn't to be a sealed undercarriage area. It is just to stop the wind from getting in, and forcing it through small holes and slits forces it to slow down rendering it powerless to lift the 15,000 lb vehicle.

      Not sure if you're still on RUclips or not, but if you are, don't worry: TIV 1 and TIV 2 are anything but fragile. They've intercepted plenty of tornadoes, and the only thing that's ever been actually damaged were the weather instruments they used to have to assist in scientific research, as those things are definitely fragile. But as for the whole vehicle, turret, doors and all, as long as they don't end up in a tornado that's too strong, or end up in one when they need serious repairs, they're all good. :)

      You do realize that the vortex is an extension of the mesocyclone in the supercell storm overhead right? The main vortex extends from the cloudbase all the way up to the stratosphere. 50,000 ft. It has an updraft capable of keeping softball size chunks of ice aloft. The wind and rain energy of a single supercell storm can power the entire United States. The amount of energy released by these storms is insane. We simply do not have the capability to affect them. Besides, thanks to conservation of energy, we really don't want to. Storms are how the atmosphere keeps an energy balance. Too much heat energy and an imbalance is created, which forms storms that dissipate the energy. They are literally the pressure valve on a pressure cooker. Stop the energy release and it will just build up more and release more violently.
