"Gender Apartheid": Taliban Approves Law in Afghanistan Requiring Women Remain Silent in Public

The Taliban government in Afghanistan is drawing renewed outrage over a new law banning women's voices in public, forcing them to completely cover their bodies and faces out of the home, and more. This comes after the Taliban banned women from working in most fields and ended girls' education past primary school following their takeover of the country in 2021. We speak with Sima Samar, an Afghan human rights advocate and doctor who chaired the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission from 2002 until 2019; she also briefly served as minister of women's affairs in the interim Afghan government in 2002, after a U.S.-led coalition toppled the first Taliban government for its support of al-Qaeda. "You cannot see such a law in any other regime on this planet," she says. "This is a crime against humanity. It is gender apartheid."

When will we stop stealing each other's hopes and lives? When will we stop harming each other? When will we stop making life unlivable for others?
When it's impossible for them to do the same to us.
When did Afghanistan become "we?"
I'm not claiming any part of this "we" you're speaking of.
They have a flawed concept of morality. I feel like this tends to develop in heavily expIoited countries. For whatever reason, the TaIibn seems overly reliant on religious doggma rather than common sense. I'm the first one to say that countries may as well ignore western values and their ideas of right and wrong. If people are treated well, that's all that matters. But in this case, it is clearly not sensible... This law of theirs was never a reality of most lsIamic empires of the past, at least I don't think it was. I wish the TaIibn wouldn't hamper their country's potential like this.
@@TD1237 And the Tali thinks you've a flawed morality as well.
Only the people can free themselves. Silence from men is complicity.

How could they free themselves if uneducated people with guns patrol the streets? Those uneducated people with guns could have been taken care of but the allies didn't. Makes me wonder why...

I guess women should have taken up arms and stopped the Taliban from retaking power. Almost nobody was willing to stand up to the Taliban at the end of the US occupation. I worked with a guy from Afghanistan who had been a translator for the US military. The way he talked about the country was always heartbreaking. It was like he couldn't bring himself to admit the reality.

Maybe the U.S. should stop trying to dictate the policies of nations halfway around the world.
Honestly, I think the country shouldn't have been expIoited for the years the way it was. I feel like these things always get out of hand after that.

Remember when Trump wanted the Taliban to come to Camp David?
What a dumb comment. Reagan built the Afghani Mujahadeen to fight the Soviets (their Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan 1.0), Clinton supported favored status quo with the Taliban, W tried to improve relations, and then after 9/11, we completely destabilized and ran the country into the ground, fueling corruption and ethnic / sectarian bloodshed, only to cut-and-run during Biden first year (after Trump all but sealed the country’s fate). This doesn’t even touch on the 3 wars fought between the Russian and British empires during the colonial era (the Great Game).
Stop being so tribal and open your damn eyes. Instead of told-you-so BS, see this for what it is - this is a battle hardened country that has been kept from blossoming because of outside invaders. Grrr... 🙄 When I was deployed to Afghanistan, everyone back home took great pleasure in reporting how much the Afghani people suffered because of us. Now all the news are bitching about how much they are suffering under Taliban.
The truth is that Afghani people never wanted freedom, democracy or girls going to school. You can't just force the people to accept our values. We poured in troops, money and materiel into this shithole for 20 years and it took like 6 hours for Taliban to take over once US troops left. So let's drop the bullshit outrage and let the Afghani people decide for themselves.
If they prefer Sharia Laws over modernity, that's their own business. My unit suffered 2 KIA in 9 months we were there but we lost 16 to suicide in 10 years since we got back. All these deaths and suffering and we achieved nothing. I am so sick and tired of these pretentious people complaining about women's rights in Afghanistan.
I am a retired US Soldier. Though I was never in Afghanistan, I was in other combat zones. The US didn't fail in those countries either. The people of those countries deserve the lion's share of the blame. Metaphorically speaking, we led a horse to water, but we couldn't make them drink. The foundation to build functioning democracies simply wasn't there. Our military leaders let us down by insisting we were continually making progress. The rose-colored glasses they wore distorted the reality of the situation.
The Taliban regime has cut off women from all rights that a woman should have as a woman and as a human being.
Taking this tragic circumstance into account, it must be noted that in 20 years the occupation has not created a material basis for women to assert themselves. This woman, Sima Samar, had tons of money, but instead of working for the women, she worked for the occupation, which was opposed by the majority of the Afghan population.😢😢
Well said. I agree with you. I don't trust Sima. I hope things settle down and the TaIib realizes how silly these rules are.
So, the occupation cared about women's rights more than the women did?
@@tracyclark7560That's not what he said. The occupation didn't care about helping women, or helping anyone. From a Western Secular Perspective, which I've mostly held through my life, the "covered in public" cry is one that I hear. There is, however, a reality of sexuality and its lure. A Religion/Culture which takes steps to keep one from being stuck at lower energy centers (Sex) versus growing towards higher levels of consciousness is not, however, foolish. I'm not recommending America also go this way, but I believe our overvaluation of sexuality and promiscuity, if growth and development are of value, is a real problem for which we have no solutions. Reality of the animal self we are invited to transcend; the potential human.
I will always blame the CIA since the Soviet-Afghan War. All the hardliners holding power or terror groups wreaking havoc in these countries trace their origins to that single event, that then became a standard policy of control to undermine countries with a muslim majority. It always leads to a fall-out of these groups with the US that raised them in the first place and is followed by handing power to fascist military vassals to curb freedoms under the guise of war on terror, with the occasional coup removing civil rule to get to the last point. Only the locals pay the price throughout this ordeal.
don't agree on blaming US. When, while US was there--more push, an impetus to fight for right should have been something the women wanted. Home of the brave.... I believe we (US) are some of the only brave, and some of us not all are reasonable, rational, intelligent, put that with brave, and we think ourselves out of complex situations, and others join us because they too realize it is complex and will take long tern solutions and a lot of sacrifice and people will die naturally and too son.
I blame radical Islam. The Taliban are brutal savages.
@@tracyclark7560 the politics of the US does not represent its people, despite the relative democracy and freedoms. Many decisions over the years served interest groups and not the public. Sima Samar worked with Americans during their invasion of Afghanistan. As a Canadian citizen, she advocated for the adoption of Western-style democracy in the country. When George Bush declared war on Afghanistan, he appealed to a feminist majority to support the liberation of Afghan women, and she was among the first to join this cause. She still believes that the world should intervene again in Afghanistan, a stance that has been controversial as it is perceived by some that figures like her benefit financially from such conflicts. Even the best Western coverage fails to repeat, let alone explain that point adequately, leading to idiots blaming this s*** on Islam even though it goes against literally everything demonstrated by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in how he treated women and the roles they held. His wives, may Allah be pleased with them, didn't just speak, they are the source of the most intimate hadiths, they taught many Muslims after he passed away, peace be upon him, and Aisha in particular LED AN ARMY.
Again, if this was Islamic then it would conform or attempt to conform with the conduct of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, let alone the Qur'an of which Muhammad's conduct was the living embodiment; as I briefly outlined above, NOTHING about the Taliban remotely matches that. The US doesn't even want change. They just want power and resources, and they'll make whatever excuses they can in order to obtain it.
nothing, because you got to want liberation as bad as occupiers do.
Just goes to show you cannot change an ideology using military force. Both the Russians and the Americans failed. As with South Africa in the day, and a certain ME country today, the proper action is to "BDS" Afghanistan.
It is quite true that you can't change an ideology by military force. You can offer a different ideology but the populace must be willing to accept it.
The USA occupied Japan longer than they were at war, and Japanese culture changed significantly during/after the occupation, from a society that followed their military's demands to a functioning democracy. The change was huge, it was possible because their government lied and failed their people, so it was completely discredited. The Japanese society was looking for something better and were able to accept what the Americans were offering. (Embracing Defeat - John Dower)
There have been successful military occupations that have changed societies, but they require a willing populace. You can't occupy first then assume they are willing to embrace change.
The problem with boycotting, is that currently, the Chinese and Russians would rather ignore the gender apartheid, because of the poppy fields and minerals are a huge advantage (because the Talibans only care about religious control, they won't focus on advanced mining industry or medicine.)
South Africa was unique, because at the time they were tied to the British, making them dependent on Western trade. In today's time, it'll only work on Israel, but not Afghanistan.
@@monsjohnson8832 Good point. In the case of Japan, it seems losing the war was destructive to self-image and incentivized a change.

Women can work Sima. And yes Woman can go without a mahram as long as they have a women with them. I literally travel there alone without a man. I went everywhere with only my sister. No Taliban that I have seen has ever pointed a gun at me or others, there was no beating no intimidation. In todays Afghanistan there’s also no sexual Harassment. Men aren’t allowed to be prevents either. As much as I hate the Tailban I also hate propaganda. While as a Muslim female I do believe that the hijab shouldn’t be in no way be forced. And that higher education should be opened to both females and males. I would also like to add that speaking to other Afghan women, they felt comfortable and completely safe they only wanted the schools to be open.
This is the impression I got from what I researched. The women want education to be more accessable. But they are happy now nonetheless. And, to be honest, I have serious doubts about the claims made in this video. The US has made similar remarks in the past, which were shown to be massive exaggerations or simply not true.
Well can we hear from the average women on the ground in Afghanistan right now? Live? Can they speak for themselves directly to the world at large and not under pressure, reading from a script? If not, I don't believe this is propaganda, just oppression and silencing of the female population there. There is such a thing as internet trolling. 🙄

i believe afghanistan / taliban should not force laws on ppl like the west is currently forcing. in the west, it is becoming increasingly difficult to raise your voice against war crimes, & arms support to rogue nations. you are then arrested under anti-terrorism laws, just for having an educated opinion.

Majority of afghans want the taliban mind your own bussiness
People just dont really understand what apartheid was , you cant apply the word to everything .
One historian once said, even if Islam didn't come Afghanistan, the pastuns would have treated their women so. It's a case of the wind meeting the palm fronds dangling. No where in the Muslim world are women denied education.
They can't have it both ways in Afghanistan without their own internal action-- wanting a foreign occupier out, and also having women's rights.
Can't the Afghani women fight back in their own families? Make life so miserable for their husbands and families--in all families--that the entire family unit fights back? Don't clean, don't have sex, etc. As long as women are needed (in whatever capacity), then they have some power.
This is another version of the "why does she stay" refrain used for domestic abuse survivors. I don't blame you. But Psychological abuse is a tough thing to overcome. One of its purpose is to weaken the will and agency of the victim.
Where would the women go if they're kicked out of their homes? They don't hire women at jobs. They'd be homeless and possibly forced to resort to prostitution to survive.
@@wonderkid-wr7mh When it comes from the state/powers that be, it's not psychological abuse. Many of these women, as in this video, know they've been oppressed and think it's a problem. But the Afghani women can not leave. They barely have rights. So the only thing they can do is fight back with the little power they have. And they do have power because they're kept for whatever subjugated roles they've been given. They don't have to fight, they haven't yet. But if they want more rights, more respect, then fighting is their only option. And because of the extreme oppression they're under, even their fighting would be limited. But they can withhold household and marital duties en masse, and create problems that can snowball into bigger societal problems to create change.
But p.s., I've endured relationship psychological abuse, and I got the hell out as fast as I could as soon as I realized it, so don't speak for all women.
This puts in great light the level of obliviousness the west have regarding this situation. There is no "we vs them " mindset in Afghanistan. At least not in the minds of most Afghan women. Respect the religious and cultural landscape of theirs . Stop trying to act savior . No one needs one
@@revivalist355 You're full of it. Are you an expert on Afghanistan? Have you polled the Afghani women on what they want and how they feel? According to the above video and other videos, Afghani women feel oppressed and think it's a problem. And I respect their right to self-determination. Quite frankly, you sound like a man, an Afghani man, who just doesn't care about women other than as a material good, so you dish out "respect their religion/culture" BS.

Gender Apartheid: it has nothing to do with the Taliban.
Amy, you host this channel and are responsible for its content. I respect that but can you explain what is meant by “gender apartheid” as there is nothing such as mixed gathering/assembly of male and females in Islam in any capacity other than they are with mehram, like father, brother, husband and son etc. There is not a single school of thought in Islam that has any dispute on this issue. Remember I am talking about Islam not cultural Islam which the whole world is exposed to including you. This looks like sheer propaganda against Islam. Remember the western media has already covered “Malala” extensively, so there is nothing that the world is not aware of about the Taliban. Please clarify your position. Thank you.
Islam is all about apartheids and gender apartheids
Wrong - stop perverting Islam for your own misogynistic view. Muslim women did as much if not more than men - they were warriors in wars with men some 1400 years ago and the incident of Hazrat Ayesha should educate you sufficiently on your purported need for a 'mehram'. Idc what your 'schools of thoughts' say, we can read the history and understand the facts without requiring help of a cleric. Men can not take away rights of women or speak for them. Why are Taliban and ISIS silent on the Palestinian issue? Why are they only interested in oppressing women and using religion as a smokescreen for their own perverted agendas? They need to learn humanity and fear God for the evilness they are spreading.
Why is this our problem? Look, Afghan women: those men have to sleep sometime. And you have access to kitchen knives. They won't even see or hear you coming...
