This is a really good video. Videos these days just have filler information, speak really quickly, and edit too much, but this has been most instructive. Thank you for this.
Shaymus - I have huge studio envy! Brilliant video - well planned, researched and executed. I want to put all the suggestions into practice myself now. Great ideas. I love a studio tour and this is the best one I've ever seen. Here's the "but". Someone else has also mentioned this and it was a big red flag. I was IT Health & Safety trainer for staff using computers and sitting at their desks. All the set up you have created is second to none. The one, outstanding danger is your use of the armrest on your chair. You might not suffer much pain at the moment, but that's because you are young and fit. I am against resting any part of the arm, wrist rests are a no-no and resting your elbow is just putting off the worst. The active arm should always be free from the shoulder to the fingers. There are many tendons in the hand, wrist and arm - they need complete freedom of movement. I would say that a Mahl stick is a good tool. I have a lot of experience - probably more than 8 years - and research shows that once you have wrist or elbow pain, it is too late to cure. Please think about it and I hope this has also helped your lovely followers. I mean only the best.
Great ideas. Thanks. I’m going to steal the French cleat idea, but make a modification. I’m going to offset it from the wall and have the lowest point high enough so that I can fit my legs underneath while sitting. The space behind can be used to store large sheets of paper and/or gator boards etc.
I know you are young, but if I can give you any advice for my many years. Your chair set up is awesome, but you should get some to cushion your elbow. I have found out the hard way that you have a never in you elbow that is you lean on your below for years it can become pinched. Maybe you can get a cushion like people get for their mouse and use it for your elbow. It may not hurt now but do the road you must like will pinch that nerve. It took me three hours to have the nerve back to normal.
Hi there, thanks for the comment. I haven’t experienced any discomfort at the moment but I was thinking about trying to get some memory foam there. I will definately keep that in mind 😊
Definitely as that's what I've done. It's your Ulna nerve which leaves under my arm from the elbow to my little finger and ring finger is very numb and has been for months now. You can also grow a bone spur at the side of your elbow where it becomes worn and calcified x
That’s an excellent point. I had the same problem as I have got older. The point of my elbow gets very bruised. I sorted it by resting my elbow on a ring doughnut shaped cat toy, now I no longer get a sore elbow. I do have to keep grabbing it back off the cats though 😂
You are an inspiration. Your video shows us all just how being organised can really pay off. This has been an eye opener for me as to just how it makes total sense in the long run to be your own best friend and make life easier . So professional Shaymus you deserve all the success in the world . I will be replaying this video when reorganising my own studio space very soon and boy does it need it . Thank you so much for sharing and being so generous with all your links and suggestions Margaret B Fine art printmaker .
Fantastic presentation Shaymus. Thank you. I can see you in the ‘not so distant future’ developing prototypes for aids that will enable artists (including disabled artists) the ergonomic solutions that will afford them a comfortable working environment. Wishing you the very best of luck in everything that you do.
Thanks for the comment! Since starting my business It’s has always been about finding ways to obtain what I need to in order to work and produce the work as best I can 😊
Wow! The thought & planning you put into your studio amazed me. You have so many ingenious setups in your space, it must be a pleasure to create there. Thank you so much for sharing, and for taking the time to list all the source links (very kind of you). I just “found” your channel today and I subscribed immediately!
Superb examples of how to stay organised and have time saving and comfortable ways of working. Well explained and you actually do what you are suggesting. Detailed but steady explanations and really helpful for professional and leisure painters and illustrators alike. Thank you. Val Cansick
This is the most useful, thorough and practical studio tour EVER! Wishing you much success in your career and thank for sharing this valuable information.
DUDE!!! I'm almost speechless... 🤯🤯🤯 Thanks so much for this upload; it's incredible! I hate to mention your age, but my mind boggles how you're able to accumulate so much knowledge at such a tender age. I was looking for a way to draw without becoming fatigued... your drawing wall and your chair set up is NEXT LEVEL! Again thank you so much❤
You are very talented and generous in sharing your knowledge, thanks. You provided me a lot of good ideas that I can apply to my home studio. I especially like your French cleat set up for pastels and your mounted IPad.
Thank you. Lots of great ideas! I took a couple of design, watercolor painting and Illustrator classes at the local college. I started oil painting. I do floral still lifes and abstracts (to use up leftoverpaint from my palette). Semi-retired. Your portraits are stunning! Congratulations on the periodical cover! Best wishes for continued success and creativity. --K
I have never seen such a brilliantly thought out studio! Hats off to your inventions! The thing about the paintingstick is... WoooooooooOooooooooW! 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 Have fun and good luck! LG Tschij 😉
Hi Shaymus, I have just completed the 2nd year of a fine art painting degree., and I can tell you that traditional portrait /figurative and realistic art is still not appreciated as much as abstract/modern art. I was using pastels for portraits in the 70’s (Yes, I’m soon to be 70, and an extra mature student! 😁). I love your work and hope to pick up from where I left off with your expert guidance.. Your room is so organised but this is something I doubt that I could achieve as I’m your typical messy artist! You deserve any success, well done!
Thank you for a brilliant video on how to use a small studio place efficient and inspiring! I really liked the ”wall easel” you made! And I have to say I so envy your young eyes-I would love to be able to sit upright and draw/ paint but my old eyes-in spite of very expensive eyeglasses- need to be hunched over a strong magnifying glass these days! So for your excellent idea to be able to work for an oldie like me I would need to be able to come closer to the surface and then my knees would literally hit the wall. If anyone could come up with a solution to make such a great wall easel but w a sort of niche for the knees to go even an artist w as bad eyesight as me could work in comfort, that would be great! Perhaps some sort of boxlike construction attached firmly to the wall, and w the slats you use to attach your drawing board to also firmly fastened on the ” wall box”, would give space for someone sitting very close and then also be able to sit upright in a good position for the back ? Sorry If I ramble-my brain starts to figure out how such a solution would work. I suppose one could also attach a magnifier in the same way you made you brilliant Ipad attachment. I am sad ypu were discouraged from working realistically at art school-that is one of the reasons I never applied to one-I do not need to get horrible debts to learn to do installations and ” idea based art”.But perhaps the wind is changing-at leats at the foundation course level? My daughter just finished a foundation course and they were taught the basics w oil and watercolour and drawing models and still lofe and also did ceramics, sculpture and etching and engraving. But, even being a - in my eyes-a talented art student she decided not to waste four years in an art college ( university level) as they still go for conceptual art and such. I have a relative who ten years ago went to do art at Goldsmiths college in London and I was told their teachers hardly ever visited the students’studios!! They were just left to do their own stuff…but still had to pay horrible fees!!
I recently returned to art after many years. Working in the corporate world kept me away. I am thinking of doing a Art degree...drawing and painting. I love it! Wish I had started earlier! Love your studio, hoping to create something similar foe my small space
I see you have clearly found organization is the key to success. Staying focused when you’re working is probably just as essential. you have set yourself up in a very intentional way that will increase your chances of living life the way you always hoped to- bravo! I am setting up a new studio myself. you have many great tips on technical aspects that are very helpful. I too use air purifiers and I’m looking for a new one, so I may look into your Phillips. The more you control your own world I believe the more successful you will be! I can see you are very talented and I think you will definitely go far. thank you for all of your efforts in this video and in passing on some of these unusual and very useful ideas for setting up studio in a small space in particular!
Yes this was my exact purpose - aiming yo be as comfortable as possible so I can just get to creating and looking forward to it! Thank you very much for the kind words, good luck with your studio 😊
wow so cleverly organised and laid out! love your well thought-out studio, very inspiring and helpful ideas, thank you :) i'm in my final year of a fine art degree (at the age of 37) it definitely doesn't teach you any practical skills, I've had to learn painting, film-making, editing and photography through RUclips. It's been challenging and frustrating at times, but the degree has taught me how to view art conceptually, apply art theory and given me a greater understanding of art practice which I am thankful for, and of course being surrounded by like-minded people who love to talk about art is great!
Hi there, thanks for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment, I really appreciate it! I agree about art degree’s, my experience was very similar 😊 good luck on finishing the rest of your studies!
I appreciate how thorough you are with your videos and your attention to detail. I know this must have taken so much time and effort to create, including linking all the supplies in the description. Thank you so much! I also think if you ever tire of being an artist, you could be an engineer! 🙂
Thank you Michele, I really appreciate the kind words 😊 I’m here to help! Haha I think engineering would be too much math for me but thats a huge compliment!
Y'know, the devil works hard, but the algorithm works harder because it knew I would click for those leeeegs! But, I'm also a figurative oil painter so here I am learning to improve my space. Bouncing the strobes off the wall to diffuse them is really clever and I do love the french cleat wall since I paint on board, too.
Amazing!!! 👏🏼 I am in the middle of reorganizing my art studio. I have watched many many you tube videos of art studio tours and art supply organization and yours is most definitely the THE best one I have come across. Your organization skills are amazing. To be honest I don’t think mine will ever be this organized. I have ADHD so nothing stays this organized for too long 😅 Thank you for taking the time to make this video and for the links. ❤
OMG I needed this video! Thank you for sharing your wonderful organizing ideas! Looks like I am building a French cleat easel now. Just what I needed. Another project lol.
Wow! What a dream space! I'm super interested in your easel. I also really like how you keep your paints, brushes and pencils. Thank for sharing this! And your ARTWORK!! You are VERY talented!
The French cleat and repurpose Ikea drawer was smart! I can only dream of having a proper studio, just working from a corner of my bedroom and living room.
Thank you! I started off working in a tiny room too. This studio is still way too small - hopefully we will both have a large working studio in the future :)
Your are work is phenomenal, thank you for sharing this your studio with us, I learned a lot, you seem to have the perfect set up in so many areas of your studio! So clever with the IKEA drawers, French cleat easel, sander & sanding pads! I love it all!
Very happy yt show me your office, I have a 12x14ft room that I want as a studio. I like your video and I will follow you. A my senior student art discovery, my teacher bought a large amount of pan pastel and she want teach us how to do art with them where we will use material bought on previous session. My total session are 5 times 8 course offered at low cost for senior, adults and reenagers. Your art is amazing
Very useful. The links are great. I will go through them and add to my wish list. I love the cleat wall idea. I saw an idea where the light box was incorporated into a hole cut into the desk. This together with a cleat wall will definitively be added to my studio makeover
Very interesting and very useful video to artist to show how to organize and keep their art studio neat. If a studio is like this then the interest of doing art automatically boost in you. Or we can say your studio is one good reason for your great artworks. Surely this video of yours will make a atleast a small change in my art material arrangement. Thanks for your effort. Its damn worthy. Keep giving us many such valuable videos which is very helpful for many artists and art learners. All the best.
I love the iPad setup! I’m just setting up my new art studio space and have recently shifted to utilizing an iPad for references. I was trying to figure out how to mount the iPad. Thank you!
Another amazing video Shaymus. Thank you for the time, effort & detailed content. Lots of really helpful advice, not least for those amongst us who relate to postural pain - loved the wall easel! This studio tour was great.
Great video, so helpful, thank you. I really liked the Komplement drawers section. Any chance you could say more about how you assembled it, best wishes.
Very nice!!!! I love the cleat wall. I have seen other artists use it in their studios but never knew what it was called. I am hoping to convert a part of my basement into a studio and would LOVE to have this. But I do have a question: Is there a way to hang a stretched canvas on it? Maybe an attachment that would allow it to hang on one of the cleats and be stable? Your studio is beautiful. So is your artwork.
I really love this video! I particularly liked your IKEA tray hack. I’ve been using tool chests on wheels. It fits my large easel on top just nicely. I have wooden draws but they are less than a metre tall. Now I’m thinking I can raise that with the tray hack to a workable height for mounting and framing. That way I can ditch the drafting table.
Ohmigosh. I’m just about to start painting again after a long long commercial art career and I’m besotted with several of your suggestions. I’m going to do a wall like you have - genius! And the idea for the chair is worth a try since I have never found a comfortable set up that doesn’t leave me aching. I’m quite excited to get some of this implemented. I’m so glad you created this video! I also spotted a lot of really lovely art work so I’ll start following you to track your progress. Wishing you all the success and joy you can handle!
Oh P.S. I did go to art school here in America, Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. It was an experience I value but I don’t think art school is necessary to become a good artist. Putting the work in is what gets you there, and hopefully you can meet other artists who will clue you in to some tricks of the trade that help you along. Like I just got some tips from you!
I love the vertical cleat wall vs. an easel. I can see how it could be a huge space safer. I had an injury as a child that caused damage to the nerves that feed some muscles in my arm. Unfortunately, it's my dominant arm. As a result, I have to draw on a flat or slightly tilted surface so my forearm rests on the table. Otherwise my traps get extremely knotted and sore . I mention this because that mahl stick idea might work because my arm could rest on that, eliminating the need to use my muscles to hold my arm up. I have to give you a lot of credit for being so creative and figuring these challenges out on your own.
I love your studio. So well organised. Love the video and love your beautiful artwork. Oh yes, please could you make a video (if you have time) about how you post the artwork etc. Thank you for sharing your artwork and your wonderful skills. Wishing you even more succes. ❤
This has been very helpful. Thank you very much for sharing 🙏 I was just about to buy a drawingtable for larger size artworks 😉 I would very much like to see a video on how you ship your artprints and commission work. Or did I miss an video on that last one?
Faced with the same type of window air-conditioning situation a foam core board seal between opened window and it's frame will work wonders . A tidy sealing of triangulated boards ....at the open sides ....and a rectangular piece ( with a cutout for the air-conditioning pipe exhaust ) have worked well here in Winnipeg Canada for a number of years . ( Lately the window's were changed to a better configuration ) . The conditioner sits on a baking tray to catch occasional condensation .... and a second drainage tube ....18 " above the tray .... drains into a rectangular plastic pail ....purchased from the Dollar Store . All this has worked out just fine ( though required retaping once a year ) . All the best .
Lovely informative video, thank you as I to like organization . Sorry but links to products did not show up and am wondering if you have them posted somewhere else.
It was great to see you and your studio. You have a great setup. Thank you for sharing this with us. I can make a suggestion about the air conditioner: you might want to see if there is a way to better adapt the vent hose to your window. With the window open you must be loosing a lot of conditioned air. This will make your electric bill more expensive. You may be able to make an adaptor baffle with wood or foam board to reduce air loss. There will be inherent inefficiency due to the makeup air needed for a single vent design, but a better fit should save money. Don’t make the air seal too tight, as some makeup air is still needed, unless you have a dual vent model.
Thank you! I did experiment with a couple of ways but because the aircon creates negative air pressure, it would always pull the foam board or whatever out. Portable AC’s arent the most efficient but it does still help when the day is at it’s hottest. Luckily I only have to use it in the summer, the rest of the year is fine. I might have to look at a duel model as that would work! Thank you for your comment 😊
Great video Shaymus. You have such a nice and functionable space for creating! I need that air con unit so bad 🙏 and those tray drawers are such a good idea! I keep adding things to this comment but wow.. that air purifier data was alarming. Thanks for the heads up.
Thank you Grace! I’ve been obsessive about how optimised I can make this small space work for me 😆 The air con is definitely a shout - so pleased the cold weather is coming back!
I envy your organisation! 😂 I'd love to see a video about how you organise your schedule, I found it interesting how you sketch the outlines so far in advance!
You got stuff I need and want but don't have the room. I'll be moving next year giving me more room. The flat drawers are first on my list. Also, what fixative do you use, and how do you spray your pastel work? Great video!
Thanks for watching, hope the move goes well for you! I don’t use any fixatives - they always ruin the artworks. I have a soft pastel beginners guide video with this info & more 😊
Hola ,hice un soporte en la pared con el vídeo explicativo y me quedo genial y muy funcional, mi pregunta es donde puedo conseguir el soporte que tienes para sujetar el iPad muchas gracias, te admiro mucho un saludo
Your studio is amazing!! I’m a new pastel artist and I would like to do commission pet portraits. How do you package and ship your commissions and prints?
Nice setup, I'm thinking abou an AC unit as well, my studio gets really hot, I have a similar window and space is very similar too, I clicked the link you provided for amazon, but there are too many options. May I ask if you are happy with the one you got? and what model it is? I can see is a Rhino, is it good enough for a similar space? Thanks so much.
Hi there, the specific AC unit I have is just a decent one I found on Ebay, it’s the Rhino 12000. It works well but it will depend on your space. My studio has 3 walls that face the sun throughout the day and you have to have it on constantly to keep the room cool. The heat rushes back pretty quickly once I switch it off so thats something to keep in mind. But it’s good for emergencies when I need to work and it’s too hot. If you’re able to, it would be a better solution to have one installed through the wall but we’re unable to do that with our house because of rules regarding changes to exterior. Good luck!
This is a really good video. Videos these days just have filler information, speak really quickly, and edit too much, but this has been most instructive. Thank you for this.

wow so cleverly organised and laid out! love your well thought-out studio, very inspiring and helpful ideas, thank you :) i'm in my final year of a fine art degree (at the age of 37) it definitely doesn't teach you any practical skills, I've had to learn painting, film-making, editing and photography through RUclips.
@@shaymusart thanks so much! looking forward to more of your videos :)
@@shaymusart You're welcome. I agree, all that math wouldn't be as enjoyable as art!
I am so in awe at your studio. It’s so epic.
Thank you Owen! Glad you like it
This is gonna help me with my studio! Thanks for making this !
😁😁 thanks for watching, glad you found it useful!
He is shaving his legs😅
@@Christdiedforoursins1Corinthia so do I! 😎 gotta show off these legs of steel, my guy.

Hi there, thanks for the lovely comment I really appreciate it! Glad the video was of some help for you 😊
Same here! I envy people who can maintain a clean, orderly space. Shaymus is the best! Talented and so generous.
you are so clever, your studio is perfect
Thank you so much 😊❤️
OMG I needed this video! Thank you for sharing your wonderful organizing ideas! Looks like I am building a French cleat easel now. Just what I needed. Another project lol.
My pleasure, so pleased to hear it was helpful! Thanks for watching ☺️
The best studio tour I've ever seen. I love your organizational skills.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video ❤️😊
I’m in love with your wall! Great idea
Thank you so much ☺️
Loved the studio! You have organized it very well and given me some great ideas to better organize mine!
Brilliant! I'm saving this video for future reference. Thank you!
My pleasure, thanks for watching ☺️
Wonderful, innovative storage and organizing hacks!! Your art is terrific.
Thank you so much for all your suggestions 😊
You’re most welcome 😊
Just found your video. Exactly what I needed. Thank You
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Very informative video.
Great studio, small but very well organized.
Nice art. 👍
Thank you! Glad you like it ☺️
Wow! What a dream space! I'm super interested in your easel. I also really like how you keep your paints, brushes and pencils. Thank for sharing this! And your ARTWORK!! You are VERY talented!
Beautifully organized studio. Good job! Just checked out your website and your artwork is truly exceptional.
Thanks Lisa! I really appreciate it :)
My New Dream Studio 😅💚💚💚 thank yiu so much for sharing 💚💚💚
Thats such an honour! Thank you 😊
thank you! I have a Goal now lol🤩@@shaymusart
The French cleat and repurpose Ikea drawer was smart! I can only dream of having a proper studio, just working from a corner of my bedroom and living room.
Thank you! I started off working in a tiny room too. This studio is still way too small - hopefully we will both have a large working studio in the future :)
Subscribed. This is very helpful to me as I begin shifting part of my small space into an art studio.
Thanks for the subscription! Glad the video was useful for you 😊
Your are work is phenomenal, thank you for sharing this your studio with us, I learned a lot, you seem to have the perfect set up in so many areas of your studio! So clever with the IKEA drawers, French cleat easel, sander & sanding pads! I love it all!
Thanks so much for watching Jane! So pleased you enjoyed the tour 🥰
Thanks for watching, I’m glad the links are useful. Good luck with the studio!
Cleat wall is cool. I have something similar i can put on a table so i can tuck my legs under. Think i will get it up and running. ThNks!
I lot of detail and your diy is amazing. You have really thought about it and came up with clever tools and ideas. Your work is awesome. I subscribed
Love all of the great information in your video. I'm seeking up my studio and your videog8ve me all kinds of great ideas.
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching!
I love the iPad setup! I’m just setting up my new art studio space and have recently shifted to utilizing an iPad for references. I was trying to figure out how to mount the iPad. Thank you!
Impressive organization.
I try to have my work area in the basement organized but this puts me to shame and now motivated to do better.
This was super helpful. I definitely want to incorporate some of these ideas in my art space.
Another amazing video Shaymus. Thank you for the time, effort & detailed content. Lots of really helpful advice, not least for those amongst us who relate to postural pain - loved the wall easel! This studio tour was great.
Thank you so much, I’m so pleased you liked the video 😊 i’m glad to hear it was of use to you!
that was a great detailed run down of our studio mate. Well planned.
Absolutely brilliant. You are very kind to share your design.
Of course! Thanks for watching 😊
What a perfect video! Amazing tips, thank you very much, Shaymus.
No worries, thank you for watching! ❤️
Loved your video and love how organized and neat your studio is. I learned a lot from you sharing this. Thank you.
I love your studio. So well organised. Love the video and love your beautiful artwork. Oh yes, please could you make a video (if you have time) about how you post the artwork etc. Thank you for sharing your artwork and your wonderful skills. Wishing you even more succes. ❤
Thank you so much for the lovely comment & request - I’m definately planning on making this video as I know it will be so helpful yo people 😊
such helpful video, thank you!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching 😊
This has been very helpful. Thank you very much for sharing 🙏 I was just about to buy a drawingtable for larger size artworks 😉 I would very much like to see a video on how you ship your artprints and commission work. Or did I miss an video on that last one?
You’re very welcome - thank you for watching! I’m definitely planning to create the shipping video - i know it’ll be helpful to a lot of people 😊
Faced with the same type of window air-conditioning situation a foam core board seal between opened window and it's frame will work wonders .
Hi there, thank you for the kind words! All the links can be found in the description
Amazing setup. Well done
Really interesting to see your set up! A video on packaging finished pastels for posting would be really helpful. Thank you.
@@clare1455 Thank you! Noted :)
I really enjoyed the studio tour. I thought the shelves from Ikea was a brilliant idea.
Thank you! So pleased you enjoyed it 😊
You got stuff I need and want but don't have the room.
I really enjoy and it’s very useful to me thank you so much 🎉
Your artwork is amazing! Where do you get your reference Fotos from?

Very informative video 😍 more artworks to come babe ❤️
thanks for watching!
Your studio is amazing!! I’m a new pastel artist and I would like to do commission pet portraits. How do you package and ship your commissions and prints?
Thank you!! I've been requested a few times for this so I'll start putting things together to make a video for it :)
Brilliant, thank you !!
Thanks for watching ☺️
Thanks wonderful trip.
Thirst trap thumbnail for the win 🏆 🎉
Good luck!
