- I've got about 6 months left until I take the Czech Citizenship exam, and I have to pass a B1 language test! Here's a snippet of one of my real lessons with my Language Coach Eliška from Because Czech is Cool (www.becauseczechiscool.com/)

Ahoj! I'm Jen, Native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Everyday we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

Nádherné. Ano takhle se cítí každý kdo mluví cizí řečí v určité fázi. Bylo to super. Vy máte s Honzou nevýhodu, Jen, že spolu mluvíte anglicky. Potřebovali byste být celý den nuceni mluvit s domorodci a pak ten jazyk do člověka nateče strašně rychle.
Pěkné!Obdivuji vás a držím palce ať vám to vyjde
to nevím, zatím předvádí víc Angličtiny než Češtiny
Hey Jen!
I want to recommend you to read aloud in Czech. As a foreign speaker some letters can be extremely hard to pronounce. Even for Czech kids. Some have to go to speech therapy to learn. It's not so uncommon...
Also you can try to watch tv or vids in Czech so you can catch it better.
You need to read, talk, listen....
But I have to say your Czech is not so bad. You are on a good way to learn. You will get there!
Impressive. Czech is such a difficult language for English speakers. Congrats!
Wow, Eliška. Doufám že všichni ji známe z kanálu s Gavinem 😉
Gavin asi umrel?
@@rodier_ratafakus To asi ne, ten jeho portugalskej kanál normálně jede. Nejspíš na češtinu nemá čas a motivaci.
Not sure what the exact B1 requirements are, but you were pretty amazing. Holding a conversation and being able to both understand Eliška just fine *and* you being perfectly understandable without long thinking or anything was pretty amazing you see. Especially after that long talk about how you usually prepare your videos!
I'm from Morocco and live in Hradec Kralove for 8 years, I can see that our Czech level is almost similar, and I'm planing to do B1 test on March or April as well :)
Ahoj Jen.
@Anális to není o chybě.
@Anális Časem zlepší.
I agree with Eliška. You did well. You were able to keep a conversation. You had a good vocabulary and you were able to build sentences correctly. The mistakes you made were small.
I can totally relate. My family emigrated to Canada from Slovakia many years ago, and we didn't speak any English. Czech language and grammar is very complicated so kudos to any foreigner who can learn it. Great job!
When you feel like is your bad day think in us your followers. You are being my inspiration for many things that you don’t have idea. Don’t let your self down with the learning process of Czech. You doing great 👍 thank you for your videos
Hi Jen and well done! I'm Czech living in the UK and got a baby girl I'm bringing up bilingual. It is really interesting what you struggle with that I take for granted ...🙂
What helped me when I was learning english: Take a movie you know very well (like pretty women or dirty dancing you seen million times) then you watch it in Czech with czech subtitles. As you know what it is about you can listen easily while you read the text without trying hard to concentrate on the translation. Keep watching it while matching your pronunciation with the text. Hope it helps and good luck !
Jen je prostě skvělá. Leckdy vystupuje jako excentrik, extrovert, exhibicionista, je velmi, velmi hlučná a vtipná, přitom nezapře plachého a velmi skromného člověka. Ideální kombinace.
Hi Jen. If you wanna learn Czech, try read some books and record it. Even children at school learn Czech by reading aloud in front of the whole class.
Such a good tip, I’ll try it. Thanks Mari!
and talk talk talk..))) learn verb and noun , listen cze tv ..try use czech words w honza talk .. when you got it ..you will see new world..))))
Exactly, lots of reading and maybe listening to the news on radio is imho the fastest way to build vocabulary and get used to the language. And the only way to get feel for the language and stop being dependent on the grammar rules.
My tip is radio and reading. Really helps.
reading AND listening to the text at the same time (for correct pronunciation)
Well done Jen! You are an ispiration to our kids! Please keep these lessons coming, we will have our kids do them with you!
Well done, Czech is extremely difficult to learn. I was born there but lived most of my life in NZ. It's great to see someone putting in so much effort to learn.
Inspirational! Keep it up!
parádní video, radost koukat. doufám že budou další 😉
Omg, so cute! Love the effort you put in. 😍
Jen tak dál! Klobouk dolů :-) Ta zkouška se určitě povede v pohodě!
That's a really good video. I just started learning Czech and it is very challenging!
Tohle nikdy nepřestanu obdivovat. Opravdu klobouk dolů. V březnu držím palce.
You’ll smash that exam :-) good luck :-)
you’re doing great jen!! i love watching your czech journey:)
Good luck Jen! Please give us some tips when you already made it, for sure you will. 😊😊
I'm in a similar situation and seriously needed your example on how to progress. Thank you for this video and please please keep the series up through March.
And the comments of your subscribers have also been helpful. Many great suggestions for me to take on! Thank you all!
Super video :) Jde Vám to moc dobře! Jen tak dál... :)
Seeing you struggle like this makes me feel better about my own language skills. Thank you for showing us that it's okay not to be perfect and we can still be confident and unafraid to speak. Btw your eyes are beautiful and shining in this video.
I praise you,, I have honestly tried to learn the language myself and actually ordered food to improve on my Czech! I failed and was laughed at, but learned from experience!!!
Ahoj držím palce ať to dáš a pokračuj určitě v dalších videích, je to super!
Your Czech is actually much better than my Greek and I study that for more than 3 years now. Congrats!
Ahoj Jen, jsi moc šikovná, jde ti to úžasně! Skvělá práce a velká pochvala!
Obrovský obdiv a respek! Jste skvělá! :-) :-) :-)
Amazing, good luck 👍
You are absolutely amazing as is. One tip I've got from teachers while preparing language exams is not to overthink or overcomplicate things when it comes to speaking or writing exercise. if picture shows you two persons in a situation - stick only to that you see.
Could you please make more of video like this one ? It was great.
Oh boy, I can totally relate. I’ve taught guitar for many years. I’m learning Czech myself right and I totally understand the experience. I can also relate to how my students feel.
Perfect!!Congratulation!
Dávám velký LIKE. Jde to to moc dobře. Držím ti palce.
I have the same issue sometimes in Czech, some words that I know, I suddenly forget about them. Anyway I understood everything you spoke in Czech, I think the fact you’re trying to learn this language is pretty amazing.
Good luck, dont worry Jenn, you gonna be fab😁
Good for you! I’m currently working on a birthday rhyme for my mother in law. I’m headed back to the Czech Republic next week for a couple of weeks. I’ve been taking lessons 2x week for almost two years, and I was so cocky that I thought I would have it down by now. I’m fortunate in that I will be living in Opava/Horni Lomna, and far fewer people speak English there, so I will be forced to confront my fear of being child-like, which anyone has to do to learn a language. Good luck, and I will be following your journey. If you ever want to escape to the end of the world, look up hotels in Horni Lomna, and ours will be the top rated on bookings. Drop me a note if you ever want to visit.
Well done for being brave and let us see the actual lesson! Já jsem se nejvíc naučila anglicky sledováním soap operas a filmů s titulky, a pak jsem měla možnost žít ve Walesu a prostě jsem musela začít mluvit :o) Keep up the good work!
You speak so well already!!!!🥰👍🏽
This should be more than enough for passing B1,Jen. In fact, very, very good. Pls let us know if you passed. Considering how difficult the Czech Language is - you have my respect. Michael
you're great at learning Czech. and something completely different, I love your hair colour.
Hi Jen! Really good job!
I have almost similar idea as Mari.
Try book in two languages...
Same text is in Czech and English...
It could help you with the ends of the words ("koncovky") :) best wishes, Girl from Brno
Much respect, Jen.
'Makes me realize, how complicated language czech is. I wouldn' t want to learn it again😅
well...good luck... hodně zdaru
Jste moc šikovná! :)
Perfektní výslovnost! Tomu Čech rozumí a správný tvar slova to už je jen cherry on top of the cake.
A konečně taky video, kde mluvíš česky, víc takových! :)
Good Luck, I want to make B2 english certificate next year and my english is somewhere on baby yapping level.
Úžasná jsi!!!
Wow! You’re at about the same level as I am! I thought for some reason Citizen test was C level. If that’s not the case, and it’s B, I better get studying!
I really enjoyed watching (and understanding) your lesson! I say keep posting them!
Mluvis hezky good luck
Obdivuju Tě, Jen, za heroický zápas s naším jazykem. Ale daří se. :-)
Keep on going, your Czech is very, very good! 👌
Don't be so harsh to yourself. Your pronunciation of "ř" is really good! And that's what many struggle or never learn! Keep up!
Youre kind Nika, thank you!
Love you hair ! It makes your eyes super blue .
Don't worry Jen, you can do it! :-)
Wow, Jen! Honestly, I did not expect this level of proficiency...
You go Jana, you will do it! Hodne stesti :)
Thank you, Martino!
So. We're in the same boat in the sense that we've been living here for an extended period and still haven't mastered the language and now hit that point where it's time to take a more formal approach to learning and write a citizenship exam.
Starting with the cultural exam - Here there are 300 questions from an online publically accessible databank. All the questions you get in the actual exam come from this databank of questions. Therefore the challenge here is memorizing 300 questions and their correct answers. Although not dead easy is at least passable with some work.
Now onto the real challenge, the language test. It seems to be graded at B1. If it is actually B1 (Which I doubt) then B1 is exponentially more difficult than A2. Honestly, from what I've read and listened to from model exams, it seems more like C1. To put it another way, it's real Czech, the same Czech you hear in the wild and spoken at full speed.
The questions seem confusing, even for native speakers. I can't tell you how much information they cram into a question and the audio is played back at full speed and you only get 2 listens. The answers also seemed like they're designed to trick you up a bit. They aren't playing around, and it's a case of understanding everything instinctively or high possibility of failing it. They've designed it to be very very difficult.
So if you're at that point where you can't speak Czech that well but can understand about 80% of what's going on around you - At least from what I've seen so far it would be highly unlikely you would pass a B1. If you however are at that point where you can put on a movie without the subtitles and understand almost every word without any problems, and can have long conversations with people over just about everything, including using nuanced and picturesque speech, then you will pass this exam.
Now, if you're like me, you need subtitles when watching Czech movies and seriously need to pause and study and translate and decrypt and most of the time short on vocab. Well consider this test, taking the hardest movie you know, turning off the subtitles, playing a quick paced complex dialog and then, playing that again, and then asking you detailed questions. Again if you're like me you look at the questions and there's still words you don't know. Well chances are then you'll fail this B1 exam.
I guess that's the reality we find ourselves in. For anyone thinking 'Oh just a language exam". Again I believe the B1 for citizenship is actually harder than a traditional B1. I also think the B1 label on this test is very misleading. Think of it more like a test designed to determine if you can actually REALLY speak, read and write Czech.
When I consider the foreigners I know who live here, I who in my circles speak the best, and for me this test is about as challenging as perhaps climbing mount everest. But for those students who you come across in language schools who are still busy with "Kde je stanice metro?". Passing this test is like asking a layman to pass the bar without studying.
Lady You and Your husband are beautiful people. I enjoy Your videos!!! You speak Czech much better than my own kids who were born were You live now. I live in USA now for most of my life but I miss my homeland very much. Food over there is second to none and the beer is the best (Budvar)!!!!!!!
Obdivuhodné. Držím palce.
You speak great, I hear almost no English accent! Good luck on your way to the citizenship!
Thank you Jaroslav!
I really like the ficus and the monstera! 😊
Hi Jen! Your czech is better than I thought! As many people above, I recommend reading, listening to radio and watching documentaries and movies. If you choose correctly, not only your skills with language will rise, but you can use it in the test in another way, too: you can show them you know about Czech culture, history etc. So, for example, when talking about Prague spring, you can mention Bílá paní (movie), Píseň pro Rudolfa III., Kdyby tisíc klarinetů, Návštěvní dny Šimka a Grossmanna etc. Invasion in 1968 and what came right after: Šimek and Grossman's soudruh Pupák, Píseň pro Rudolfa III. part 8 etc. 1960s, great movies like Spalovač mrtvol, Ostře sledované vlaky, Starci na chmelu. 1970s, mostly good comedies that didn't include anti-communist ideas. 1980s and a bit more interesting stuff like Proč?, Návštěvníci and other. Comedies, parodies in Czech film and I could go on. The same applies to literature, you can use it in many ways. You'll show you're interested in our culture, you can use it when not knowing what to talk about ("oh, this reminds me of a book I've read") and it's a fun way to learn.
Brava!
-Me who started studying Czech since 3 week at újop: PANIK
- After watching the video and knowing that Jana herself is panic: KALM
Hi Jen, good luck on your exam! I think you’re doing great, btw. Czech language is difficult and it’s hard to practice when both you and your partner are foreigners. I can’t imagine myself doing the same
with for example Chinese 😀. Just don’t give up, you’re gonna make it!
Good luck.
Well done
Fandim! 👍
O stupeň níž je between the sheets/pod duchnou, s partnerem tím jazykem mluvícím.
7:07 no já mám Českou zubařku a když můj malý bratr měl velice malý problém s kazem, tak mu ten kaz vyvrtala.
jde ti to moc dobře :-)
good job..
Trying to convey a content in a foreign language as complex as we would in our mother tongue can easily throw one off :) Be kind to yourself and start with easy short Kids´like sentences... at least that is my experience. You are doing a great job! Good luck.
Czech is hard and we know it, so no worries! ;) you're doing great.
To rád slyším, Jen. :-) Hele, uděláme dohodu: Až do března ti budu psát komentáře jenom česky. :-) Jen abys nevyšla z cviku, Jen. ;-) Snaž se, a ať se daří.
Watching a lot of czech television helps always a great deal, especially news, documentaries and so on, where they speak "clean" czech so to speak......actually, if you get into it for real, you won't probably need any more teachers.....
Another source is the Český rozhlas Plus RUclips channel. The interviews there have a lot of different people speaking, in different registers, and you can slow down the video speed.
I realy wouldn´t want to learn czech as a foreing language, I admire you.
Very nice ficus lyrata there.
Zkuste najít krátké české výrazy pro "wehmut" nebo "Mono no aware"...
