Saw this live in Toledo, Oh, October of 1977. Utopia came out and played 7-8 songs from Oops, Wrong Planet, dressed in just white T-shirts and jeans, then took about a 15-20-min intermission. When the curtains parted, there was the Sphinx, the pyramid, the dry ice/smoke ... the lights went down, and then we heard, "THIS ... is an electrified fairy tale." That was it. I was hooked. Have been to this day.
Keyboards! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! An artesan of the electric, and will be looked at in the future (or even now) as such. Bravissimo!
I was fourteen years old when a friend and I hitchhiked in the cold and snow about 20 miles to the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio on New Years Eve to witness this spectacular concert! It's the ultimate in hypocracy for Cleveland to have the Rock n Roll HoF, and not induct Todd Rundgren after 34 years from the date of this show. RUN DM...WHO?
I saw this live in San Jose, Ca. the drummer was riding a motorcycle like drum set that span around. Sorry drugs won't let me remember the year but I think it was the SJ Civic.
His name is Roger Powell. A synthesizer God. He designed that Keytar he christened the Probe. The first polyphonic remote keyboard controller. It was state of the art.
I just missed the Richfield New Years Eve concert-a friend had an extra ticket for $10, I scraped it together, he'd sold it to his cousin...did get to see Utopia at World Series of Rock in '77, and '78.
Clearly the Fender was easier to play than the Veleno Ankh Bass. I understand it, Todd’s Ankh and Roger’s Probe and custom Moogs were lost in that infamous warehouse fire. As was “Maurice”
dude the drummers arms must be freaking jello by the end of this... i mean guitaring your only moving your fingers same with bass... and with synthasizer hes using he must be pretty tired lol
Todd Rundgren's written some great songs - Hello It's Me, I Saw The Light, Can We Still Be Friends, We Got To Get You A Woman etc, but this extended, solo laden stuff just bores me. Why does "progressive" so often translate as "let's show everyone what skilful players we are"? Sometimes less really is more. As I said, Rundgren's great, generally - I like him a lot, just not this so much.
