I saw Frank perform at The Whispering Beard Folk Festival in Friendship, Indiana in 2013. He was mesmerizing. Poor Old Lance is an outstanding song. Love you Frank THAAAAAAAAANKS!
I've never been interested in this type of music, but Frank presents it with such heart and an authentic personality. Honestly, I have never seen anyone so in the moment. Such a great man and musician
I first saw Frank playing on the street in Hollywood one summer, and lo and behold I got to see him in concert on the other side of the country last summer in Asheville. There are a lot of really great Old time players out there, heck, I'm a pretty serious player myself---but Frank is on a different wavelength...he IS the music.
Frank plays Old Time Fiddle music which was popular during the late 1800s and early 1900s. It stopped being popular by the 1920s, but there were still some prominent artists creating that style of music for a couple decades after. Frank's clothing and hairstyles remind me of the fashion of working class Americans of the very early 1900s. Wikipedia actually has a nice little bit of information about the music Frank tends to play: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_time_fiddle
This is hipster music? WHAAAA!!?? Oldtime gets cool and then it gets uncool. It doesn't matter to the hardcore folkies, who are about as unhip as your groovy uncle for the most part.
@flesheatingbull he's really wonderful, but there are lots of great old time musicians out there still playing the music and learning the tunes but not getting a lot of credit. This music is due for a major comeback!!
Its got the same head as the resonator Roscoe Holcomb holds on the front cover of the high lonesome, also an open back (same model maybe)in the walker family videos. Prolly an 50-60's import. Wouldn't take much to find out I bet
frank is so intense! those "punk rock boy bands" belong to disneyland comparing to that true intensity. I wonder if he tried derroll adams' folk. Anyway, It feels so good!
Clawhammer. Look up a how to video for clawhammer banjo. What might blow your mind a little more, is that not a single note is played with an up stroke/up pick. Its all striking down
Who cares about all this hipster nonsense? This guy produces good music on whatever he touches. I could get down to this and then listen to trap music. Just let people do what they love without judgement.
kmerr100 It's the "fifth string," the highest sting on a 5-string banjo (of which there are four and five string varieties). It is a drone string (not usually fretted) and is usually tuned to G. This traditional style of banjo playing is called clawhammer. :)
true! Frank's playing is nice, and he's got the whole act and look to go with it, but there are other musicians out there making amazing music who aren't promoted nearly as much as this guy. check them out too!
It was so lovely to hear your voice again in the 10th anniversary tribute to Over the Garden Wall.

I’m envious, I bet it was amazing.
i feel the need to help support this guy. he is one of a kind, for sure.
He channels the old timers like few others. I return to him again and again when it's time to time travel.

It is great to hear contemporary musicians playing this stuff so well.
This guy plays wonderfully. He is an instrument.
saw him a few days ago for the second time here in Portland. He is a real great guy and an amazing talent.
I was raised in Cumberland Gap TN, from 2 till 11.
a great place to be raised.

went to gig of his last night, wonderful person. can't wait till he comes to the UK again!
Come back Frank. Critics condescend because they can't.
Come back Frank!!!! We miss you!!! Come play with me in Phoenix!
this is just amazing!
Wish I knew the tuning for this Land Norris's version of this tune is my favorite Frank killed it on this sounds just like the original recording
this guy is the real deal
Inspiring, simply lovely.
King of bluegrass
Made my day.
Soul and heart. Wonderful Frank.

The way he is dressed and has his hair styled is like right out of the fifties, perfect for this type of music.
I'd say it's older than that. 1930s or even older.

Can't wait to see him perform at the Whispering Beard music festival this year!
Clawhammer banjo players are a breed being reborn again!
Wonderful take on Land Norris' 1924 solo banjo recording.
excellent!
What??? People are saying this is hipster music but its just like... Good music??? Idk bros its just like
Rlly good

That's a matter of preference! I like both.
Great!
holy freakin' crap...
I'm a professional country guitarist, and I have no idea how the hell he's picking that
7 years late but its his fingernail and thumb acting as a claw and hammer.
God made Seattle alright with KEXP.

He plays seemingly without effort, his voice may sound weak but I think it compliments the playing.
Clawhammer. Look up a how to video for clawhammer banjo.

I found it alot easier than scruggs style but I think it sounds better
@flesheatingbull a dear friend of mine just produced a record for him, so you can support Frank by purchasing the recording!! :)
anyone have any idea of the tuning hes using in this song?
Roscoe Holcombe reincarnated! Great!
If you're lucky, you'll hear him do a fiddle version. It's truly demonic, and makes this one (which is wonderful) seem almost staid.

I need to know how to play this. It’s just to fast for me to figure out. Does anyone have at least the chords.
Is that like a bass string on his banjo? And are all banjos like that?

that talented weirdo.

Gabriel Kyne youre not doing a great job of promoting them
@AmbientMW Made it himself, I bet.
I wonder what Frank is up to these days
He recently narrated the Aardman animated Over the Garden Wall tribute. 😊
What's the tuning on this piece?
Sounds like regular open G to me, but don't hold me to it.
@@sgpr3d Also kind of sounds just sharp of Open G, just under a half step
a great clawhammer version, but hipsters do your reasearch, one of just many classic Appalachian tunes.
He's good banjer owrite BUT these lix are the polished-fer-yankees version heard since hootenanny in the 1950s
Some fast
Greatest hipster of all time! You win Frank!!
I don't much care for these lyrics. I prefer the more well known versions.
