    I’m many years late and I understand if I don’t get a response. I have a German Shepherd male puppy that’s 10 months and is predicted to be 80-100 pounds (vet) and he’s incredibly tall. I am a 15 yr old that weighs around 120. I am going to ask a few questions and feel free to get back to me if you have any time to spare.
    1. When he’s older. Would he be able to pull me in a cart?
    2. How old would you say they are ready to pull?
    3. How do you train the dogs for directions? I do horses and know horse controls, but not dogs. Would it be okay to use the same command as horses or no?

    • @DaphneLewis
      @DaphneLewis  2 года назад +1

      1. Yes. He will love to do that. 2. Start training now. As long as he is having fun, he won't be damaged by this sport. At two years old, you can work on distance and speed. 3. Use the same commands as for horses or use the commands that mushers do. Go to www.chalosulky.com for training instructions. Your German shepherd is lucky that you will give him a job and a career.

      Darlin, you have a standard Australian Shepherd if your dog is 22" tall. =/ Minis only get 14" - 18" for males & 13" - 17" for females of the miniature variety. I own several standards that are currently between 17" and 19" as they are only 5 and 6 months old. Unless you mean you have a toy that is 12" tall and had just measured incorrectly. Now, the cart pulling would depend on how big your dog actually is and how old they are. My girls will be starting their training with a makeshift cart made from a milk crate and light weight tractor wheels AFTER they are used to dragging either light weight chain or their training shafts around the yard / house. The whole thing would probably only way a few lbs. but the point of it is conditioning the dog to actually pull a regular cart when the dog is 2 years and had their x-rays done for hips and elbows. Something I have to get done anyway in order to breed them when they are 3 - 5 years of age (when ever a good tested stud is found or joins my household). You never want to over work your dog, especially if they are under 2 years, or much older or showing signs of discomfort from things like arthritis or hip dysplasia.

      the same way you make them come too you, how you make them walk at your heel or play fetch. By making it fun for them, that they get rewarded with either cuddles pats and attention or treats. You reward good behaviour and I stress do not punish them for doing wrong.
      I got my dog to walk religiously on the left hand side of the road off the leash. did not matter if I was there or if he got it into his head he wanted to go on an adventure. alone or not he walked on the left hand side and waited for cars to pass before crossing on his own. His reward was getting off the leash on good behaviour(it was enough for him) and his punishment was to be leashed (cause he disliked it) He quickly picked up that to remain unleashed he had to obey the rules I set otherwise he got leashed.

    • @DaphneLewis
      @DaphneLewis  4 года назад

      The ease of pulling a person the size you write depends on the rig. The sulkies that I now sell at www.chalosulky.com are easy to pull at a steady 6 to 8 mph trot. A person your size is small. I think a 27 kg dog with nice long legs and long muzzle could trot (In cool temperatures) for multiple kilometers pulling a 40 kg girl. The dog needs time to train to do this and needs time to get fit enough to do this.

    • @DaphneLewis

      No. The dog is trained to pull when something is hitched to his harness. He is trained to respond to the collar, but not pull with it.

    • @MrEmiosk
      @MrEmiosk 3 года назад

      It is very much dependent on you reinforcing the difference between leash, unleashed and hitched. If you behave the same and allow them to break or make the rules for the different tasks you might find your dog enjoys pulling you along no matter what, doesn't matter if it is trained or not to pull a wagon/cart.

      What I see are happy dogs getting a workout. Did you know that some dogs were actually bred to pull carts? I know it’s hard to believe that dogs weren’t meant to sped 12 hours cooped in a kennel and given an occasional walk when the owner felt like it. I see that so often it is sickening. Ironically, many people don’t consider that abuse. At least these dogs have the “privilege” to be tired. Of course people need to be responsible and not push the dogs too hard for too long (especially in the heat), but it is very judgemental to call someone an animal abuser after seeing a few videos. Because of this, they will develop strong bones and muscles the same as if a person went to the gym. If you report that to the police for animal abuse, what do you think their response would be?
