The powder post beetles will not go into the heart wood. They have no problem with the sap wood. The leaves, husks of the nuts, and shavings from the tree are good weed killers, and you do not want any walnut saw dust around your animals as it can kill them. The black walnut is being hit hard by 1000 cankers disease out here in Oregon. Personally it is a nice wood, but I can't work it any more. It makes me sneezy and itchy.
If you still have this question, the trees seem to do well in a number of different locations around the US. And many people in my area (north California) consider the nuts a nuisance. So there may be some folks that have these trees that will allow you to harvest for free.
When I was a teenager , a friend and me were at a park watching soccer game. I was leaning up against a Walnut tree with my left hand. The next day we went to the park we noticed that Walnut tree I was leaning up against was now shriveled up and completely dead. A couple of days later it was announced in the local paper that park maintenance workers were going to cut that Walnut tree down. I think that maybe while leaning up against that Walnut tree I drained it of its life force ( Chi ), and now I might live as long as a Walnut tree would.
that tree would've shriveled up and died even if you didn't touch it. trees don't live off energy, its bark and roots. your physical touch can't affect that
