I thought you would be faster! We have an Amel Super Maramu, 53 foot monohull, fully overloaded for live aboard and in 15 to 20 knots on or in front of the beam we get 8 knots plus. We are delivering a Neel 51 from Gibraltar to Martinique this December
The hybrid versions of this vessel use two electric pod motors, one out in each of the Amas .. the could be retractable but you can regen under sail back up your diesel engine in the event of a breakdown or fuel problem and do amazing maouvers like tank turns in a crowded marina or enter and leave a harbour or anchorage in silence without having to fire up the ICE... In fact diesel electric hybrid propulsions even more fuel efficient. You need a bigger pack but still a lot less than you would imagine .. E motors are virtually maintainance free and pod motors are cooled by contact with the sea they also only require small through fixings and a hole for the cables.
Interesting. I never heard of the hybrid version of the Neel 51. I never even heard Neel mention electric motors on the amas for any of their models. Do you have some links for this hybrid version?
@@jamesaron1967 That may be because its a system they actually put on a Neel - Leen Explorer power yatch ... but they have a reputation for experimenting with materials and layout from reading articles and METs industry sessions. ruclips.net/video/k7kQToTeE_E/видео.htmlsi=uifReZKwJ2iue03N I was feeding information to the sailing oceans couple when they went back to Poland to rebuild their prototype big Neel .. they ran out of funds and time so put the hybrid drive on hold till the costs dropped and the tech. There are already electric sail drive systems, pod motors as well as inboard shaft drive motors. As per the many main drives Though theres also a couple of companies that already produce vertically retractable motors ones Dutch, the french also do a line of rimdriven high thrust pod motors they come on a vertical shaft so can be run as an outboard or plunged vertically down in a sealed well and rotated. Even some of the big ocean racers are now using twin oceanvolts 25s as hydro generators...then aux motors when needed eg. entering port or heading out. Spirit yatchs also have also used hybrid power on some of their Wooden sailing sculptures as they can retract the whole drive into the hull. Running a generator to power the electric motors pretty much proven but take a look at Edison motors, Topsy their DIY prototype hybrid electric logging Truck and now light truck conversions. The big suprise was that it was 50% more fuel efficient and burnt cleaner .. as well as lighter and more powerful. The key word as far as this is the Stoichiometric running point and duration of the generator .
The highest recorded speed for a Neel 51 has been around 25 knots surfing in big waves and high wind. Average cruising speeds are more in the 8-12 knots range averaging 200 miles in a day.
They sail it between the two of them but regularly take one extra crew onboard to help out in the handling of the boat. It is a big boat, but with the electric winches and lines all leading back to the helm station it is efficiently handled.
I'm so in love with the Neel (just can't afford one now). The only thing I would change is put a hybrid diesel/electric motor instead of just diesel.
What an amazing boat 🤩

Beautiful boat, enjoy your home , thanks 🎉
If you guys ever need help with passage, I am there. You have me sold on this boat.

Not in the hamas, both in center hull.
Let’s go Kaiju 🔥🔥 Greetings from Italy

oh gelukkig, dank je wel voor het antwoord.@@Boatlifeisbest
You need at least 4 people to sail this type of boat.
They sail it between the two of them but regularly take one extra crew onboard to help out in the handling of the boat. It is a big boat, but with the electric winches and lines all leading back to the helm station it is efficiently handled.
@@Boatlifeisbest They should say it.
Two experienced sailors are more than enough. The Neel 51 isn't that large.
No, single hand is fine really.
