"Buffy is the girl that everybody wants to be, but Willow is more like what they are....just she doesn't have superpowers." cut to season 6 where she nearly ends the world :)
"Normally if comedy and horror go to together, it's a spoof. That's the only way people really have ever dealt with it before. Joss set out from the beginning to say you can have all the emotions and they are heightened by the existence of the other emotions." One of the reasons the show is so memorable.
My first exposure to the concept of homosexuality was willow turning gay in season 4 (i was 8 years old) b/c i loved willow and she didn't change after realising she's gay it taught me that it was such a tiny detail of one's personality, Buffy taught me not to be homophobic, that one's sexuality makes up such a tiny part of who they are that it's mental to define somebody or worse condemn somebody based on that, it's like hating somebody b/c they like pineapple on their pizza. I seriously wouldn't be the same man today if I didn't have btvs and angel while i was growing up.
Just need to correct a point there cause in the real world a person doesn't TURN gay. They're born that way. A bisexual person can choose their preference but a gay/lesbian person doesn't have a choice in which gender they prefer. That's the only thing that bugs me about Buffy, is people gathering a person can just "turn" gay.
***** I don't even interpret Willow as being gay, she loved Oz and Xander she is clearly capable of loving and having attractions to men, therefore not a lesbian. I say she's Bi, but maybe that was too modern for FOX in 2000. I choose my words poorly I'll admit and just for the record I know sexuality isn't a choice, if it were ad go gay in a heartbeat, women are fucking mental! I believe sexuality is a broad scale with with many degrees, with straight and gay on either ends. You can Love pussy but enjoy the occasional cock, you may find women sexy but be unable to develop romantic feelings for them. think of them as political positions extreme communist on the gay side, extreme nationalist on the straight, and you political beliefs change over time, Willow took a swing to the left. I occasionally visit the left isle. But of course there are the Stalins and Bushs out there that can't and don't change. Sorry if I've needlessly rambled I've been tokken.
Plup Pi Pop you're right I'm not gay, (though I have gave it a go) So I will always have a level of ignorance to this question, not that it even matters, I love gay poeple, I love lesbians (even got a crush on one once, that wasn't fun) whatever the definitions of gay straight and bi are, it doesn't matter, because we treat everybody the same anyway, people just love people, that's simple enough for me. :)
Tony Head is a God! And also I loved the backstory of “Ripper.” Every time that bad ass side came out in Giles I’d cheer him on, yelling “Ripper!!” at my tv.
The first 35 or 40 seconds of Anthony Head's interview, where he's explaining the premise of the show, it's as if he's pitching the most absurd story anyone's ever heard: "ok, *snicker* get a load of this..." Love it.
Has anyone else noticed how the actors tend to be pretty close in personality to their characters... Except for how David is probably closer to Angelus than he is to Angel: Angelus is pretty much his own personality plus evil.
Not personality. You mean, the way they talk, i suppose ?' But i don't agree for Anthony Head. He has a cockney accent, and seems more assured of himself than Giles.
Remember the episode Teacher's Pet from season 1? "Oh, forgiveness is my middle name! Well, actually it's LaVelle, and I'd appreciate it if you guard that secret with your life." :)
What Charisma Carpenter said regarding the cinematography is why the current HD version needs to be put on the trash heap of history. I wouldn't mind a HD version done by a Whedon-approved editor, but in the current HD version that darkness is destroyed. It ruins the tone.
I watched a RUclips presentation a few years ago that showed how the BluRay edition is awful!! Scenes where you see the crew doing the filming during the scene - - NOT good!! I bought the first DVDs and was so glad that I didn’t get that rushed terrible BluRay editions. I keep hoping that there will be a BluRay edition that is done like it should be.
Still my favourite series of all time. Though I never agreed with the notion that no one else tackled a wide variety of genres at the time. Xena tackled all those same things and did it with their style and to some extent Charmed did as well.
They kinda DID do that - Cordelia's character on Angel gets to deal with superpowers, saving the world, etc. I was Soooo glad to see the characters on that show get a chance to expand. Wesley especially.
It’s weird thinking that Anthony Head coached James Masters on his British accent. It seems like Head’s real accent is quite neutral, he obviously got Masters to play it up a bit.
It would have been an interesting take on Buff it Charisma got the role instead of SMG like they originally auditioned. Would love to the the parallel.
Well...Cordelia _did_ become a lot more like Buffy during"Angel"(there's even a parallel scene in which she and Angel train together 🤬) and Sarah played Daphne on"Scooby Doo"who is much more similar to early Cordelia,so...wish granted?Somehow...?
I find it a bit weird when people talk about certain characters as "audience substitute" or "that's what people are really like" as if everyone in the audience is the same. I always related more to Buffy than Willow or Xander - it's not like you need superpowers to relate to a character, she's not all about superpowers. (It's funny because by that token, Willow would seize to be relatable the moment she started doing magic and nobody could relate to Tara or Faith or Angel or Spike.)
FrakkinToasterLuvva agree. I think Xander has his moments but overall I’d be horrified to be compared to him. I’m a girl in my 20s but I’ve always related to Giles more than anyone.
I loved the earlier seasons of Buffy a lot more than the later series. I mean, it was all great, because of joss Whedon and all the actors, but season 1 to 3 were my favourites. After that seasons 5 and 7. Season 4 was ok and I just wasn't a fan of season 6 except the finale episodes where Willow goes evil and the begining two episodes. Oh and the musical of course.. it's nice to see an interview of the earlier casrt!
I find your thoughts very interesting. I’m just like you, my favourites are Seasons 1-3 On the other hand, as you go through life, you may find that as time goes by, you have a new regard and appreciation for Seasons 4-7. Season 4 was good, but quite jarring. It escalated the stakes from the small town mayor covering everything up to a national initiative where the government at large know about demons, we lost some very well liked characters to Angel, and new characters were very subdued and low key by comparison. Season 5 is actually one of the best. It balances the stand alone episodes with season long arc. Season 6 - although I often think it my least favourite season - is really good, it is a real character study of a season - so much so that unlike the other 6 seasons, there is no big climax it’s building to, it’s all about the choices we make, the things that happen to us and how they shape our character. Particularly Buffy and Willow as they deal with loss, depression and guilt. Season 7 - I recall liking a lot, but not as much as I remember, for all the good things, there was still annoying elements like the new Slayers not being that likeable, the mutiny, Giles feeling quite distant despite being an integral part of the series, and what was Buffy’s actual plan in the final episode? There were lots of good things, Spike was a highlight, the Uber vampire, bringers, Caleb and the First were intimidating villains which is something season 6 badly needed, I like Robin Wood, the crossovers with Angel, Willow’s redemption arc. I think there are positive elements to all 7 seasons, but 1-3 are my favouriteS with season 2 being at the top of my list.
Yep... Willow is really the person everyone can relate to... untill she becomes the most powerfull witch in the western hemisphere gets addicted to magic and nearly kills everyone... and then theres the lesbian thing wich doesn't help girls relate either especially since we're talking about the nineties when homophobia was still more common then homosexuality/support
Nic, no I haven’t stuck a pig before. Bc I’m not an inhumane, cruel, asshole. If that’s your frame of reference, you deserve the path you’ve traveled since this show. What a monumental disappointment.
Really nice to see Seth Green and Kristine Sutherland - both integral to the show's success imo. Was really sad when both left.... especially as Oz and Joyce were replaced by interminably boring Tara and very irritating Dawn.
+Trey Mears How was Tara NOT boring? She hardly spoke, had no personality, awkward, stuttering, no confidence. And she's average looking. I hate people like you, you're the reason why there's boring ass people that have friends. That or you are just boring yourself.
willow: computer genius and magic person of the show... except for jenny calender, so really, willow is the reason the jenny died, to make room. so, willow is a murderer
Willow tvs! When Buffy died for a short time in episode 12, Willow was called and became the next slayer. Bruce Campbell???

lol @ the person complaining about spoilers. It's been over a decade since Buffy ended. Spoilers are gonna be everywhere.
Kristine Sutherland's hair is IMMACULATE.
Back then Anthony Head was about as old as Nicholas Brendon is today.
Nicholas Brendon had his own problems unfortunately
"I'll say 'Hey! Don't do that!' and then I'll run." Such a good description of Xander.
