I really like the marketing concepts of Gretsch . Simple videos putting the people in the front . Artists showing their trust to the brand and sharing their love for their instruments rather than showing off some crazy paradiddles with over edited clips. The videos they made to display their snares were really good too. Even though i dont play Gretsch, i got to know better the brand and tried different sets and snares and must admit that they sound great. I absolutely loved the Brooklyn serie .
I’m a Tama guy for life but love these unboxing videos of their artists. Such a great idea and genuine response and speaking about the kit, the idea behind the kit, the specs, finish, everything cause everyone knows unboxing and setting up a brand new kit is just the best experience and feeling in the world.
DAMN!!! Ok so ive watched almost all of these gretsch drums unboxing videos, and this is the most beautiful kit ive seen yet! I myself play a gretsch kit, and its true there really is nothing like that great gretsch sound. But this video shows theres nothing quite like that beautiful gretsch look ether! I know I'm hooked, and ill never get rid of my gretsch....
Were the drums unboxed and the drums played the same because I notices the mounting system on the drum was different as well the front head logo placement.
Great catch! After unboxing the kit and before setting them up I swapped heads (Aquarian Single Ply Coated) and swapped to the RN tom mount. Hope that helps Mike J www.mikeslessons.com
Mike Johnston Oh gotcha I was just wondering, cool beans! It's a gorgeous kit, do you find the RN mount more stable as opposed to the one that comes stock? Thanks for the reply btw!
Because the normal mount is just unnecessarily bulky, and the RN mount is sleek and clean, and I honestly can't tell the difference in tone between the two. Everyone clamors for as much resonance as possible and then they slap gels and gaff tape all over the drum, lol. Mike J
Dang man that’s a gorgeous kit. I love the sound of your cymbals too. I almost got the pack it was a toss up on the grebbs too but I went with 2002’s just following my instinct and I’ve never played on paiste hah. Congrats on the kit and I dig the shit out of your videos bro. 🤘
Mike, enjoy your new drums. Your enthusiasm and genuine love for drumming is infectious. A question if I may, in your experience with Gretsch, which line/series of drum kits would you recommend for someone who likes the attack and projection of TAMA, the warmth and tunability of DW, and the vintage sound of a Ludwig? I know not every drum shell fits-all but I'd be curious to hear what you think!
Just a small observation, the rack tom that Mike opens first has a rims mount and when the kit is being set up there is a Gretsch mount. Curious as too why the switch was made?
Can anyone involved in This video give the dims on the shelves on the background? Great idea to showcase the snare drums in your collect. Nice. Thank you.
I'm going to Sam Ash today. I'm going to price this shell pack, possibly a 22" bass drum instead of 20". If i get a decent trade in on my Yamaha, i'm going to pull the trigger on this.
"I admit I'm a bit jealous at all these world famous drummers that can afford any drum set they want and now they get them for free.... don't get me wrong I would take advantage of it the same way but it's just street-level musicians way of looking at things..... great drums and a great drummer at that Gretsch and Mike are....."
Mike Johnston almost surpassed Vinny Coliuta when it came to overkill of emotion... these guys have so many drum sets and get many for free.... it's weird how when you finally get successful everybody gives you free stuff, whereas before you were likely struggling with duct tape to hold your kit together......"
Greg Peller not necessarily,I have three pro kits, several snares, and several hats and cymbals. But I made enough playing to justify buying gear over the years. I feel really fortunate to have been able to do this!
just what Mike needs...just how many drum sets does one person need? Love Gretsch so much though. His drum collecting is way over the top for me... he could send me one of his many kits not being used, that would help me a ton. ;-)
.....on the other hand : without people collecting drums the companies would die! I think there are already enough drum sets for everybody on the market (drums don't waste) ......capitalistic system, consumer society.... there would be no progress.....even if it is a circle development, it's more a spiral ;-)
whoever saw his live stream of him showing the boxes better be glad they didnt bet me on what that kick size was gonna be. All y’all woulda been out 10 bucks😂
The excitement is understandable, sure, nice set,,,,,However, no drummer should act this way, unless you're opening Craviotto set, or Antonio Drums of Croatia, every drummer should experience single ply shell whether steam bent or true solid (carved out of a tree trunk). That's a whole different universe when it comes to drum sounds,,,,,
@gretschdrumsusa you can deliver me a set of Renown’s, USA Custom, or Broadcasters any time you like. We can even do an unboxing video if you’d like. Lol
It really pisses me off when you have an excellent drummer that goes on youtube and throws down, and then we go on his sight and will only take drummers, that are already excellent drummers. Obviously stuck on himself, and feels he doesn't want to waste his time with drummers that REALLY need the extra help, when in turn he was once there himself!!! *CAN WE SAY SELFISH*

… come to the dark side 😉
Beautiful sounding and looking drums!
Beautiful kit, the finish and sound is spot on! Mike is a very lucky man.
Classic looking drums, classic sounding drums, classy drummer = "That Great Gretsch Sound!"
Buildings come and go but that Gretsch sound remains forever.
What a beautiful looking and sounding kit. Just love Gretsch drums. Would love to see some more rock guys using them. Everything ebbs and flows.
It's about time Johnston! Some of us have been waiting a week to see this. Drooool
LOL! So sorry to keep you waiting :)
Was it seriously like torture? Had to be.
These gretsch unboxing videos just make me drool. 🤤 someday i’ll have my broadkaster!
I have one .... 1980, Jasper shell... 12, 14 , 16 and 22x16.... sounds amazing!!!!!

I think we all love these gear videos so much
this is almost too beautiful!
Love, Love that snare. Incredible!
Those hoops... Gorgeous set. Such a sound. I guess I'll start saving now
That snare sounds great! Hopefully we can see/hear more about it soon :)
VERY NICE!
LOVE MY GRETCH DRUMSET
CONGRATS MAN! beautiful drums.
hahaha the pure, unadulterated excitement on MJ's face!
Great drummer and great demonstrator .
Great drums too.
top 3 😄
Oh man, great drums but great drumming as well. Flawless.
I did the WMP inlay....nice touch!
Beautiful video, Mike! Job well done
Lucky skunk ! I mean that in the nicest way of course. Great looking and sound kit.

I'd also like to know why Mike prefers the RN mount over the GTS mounts they come with.
Because the normal mount is just unnecessarily bulky, and the RN mount is sleek and clean, and I honestly can't tell the difference in tone between the two. Everyone clamors for as much resonance as possible and then they slap gels and gaff tape all over the drum, lol.

Mike Johnston Thanks for the info Mike!

Hi Dominick, Hope we can help as well. You might want to check out our Brooklyn Series.
Mike I hope you’re not mad but I basically just copied your exact (finish and sizes) but a Broadkaster. lol
Thank you for all you do!
Bring it, let’s hug it out!!!
Just a small observation, the rack tom that Mike opens first has a rims mount and when the kit is being set up there is a Gretsch mount. Curious as too why the switch was made?
Just a switch to what was preferred. 😎
makes my heart sing !!
Is this Andrew from Paiste?
Boy … this video sealed the deal for me
It’s USA Custom for me 💯🙌🏿
🙏
Never been a fan of a tom on a stand. Beautiful drums
FINALLY!!
Can anyone involved in This video give the dims on the shelves on the background? Great idea to showcase the snare drums in your collect. Nice. Thank you.
I have a six piece Yamaha Japanese Oak Custom. Black badge. After seeing these drums, I have buyers remorse.
I'm going to Sam Ash today. I'm going to price this shell pack, possibly a 22" bass drum instead of 20". If i get a decent trade in on my Yamaha, i'm going to pull the trigger on this.
🙏
how can i become part of the gretsch drum family?
The best drums in the world
🙏
When will we hear about the snare?
Soon my friend... soon :)
+Mike Johnston
+Andrew McAlister
Was this prototype snare ever finalized and released???
Very pretty.
Woah! ✨🙏✨
Snare nice too maybe u should do a brooklyn standard like that one lol metal version
Is that a 20x14 kick?
It is indeed :)
They don't get them for free. :-)

I will be sure to be bummed and stone-faced the next time I receive a gorgeous drum, LOL :)

I thought he already has a USA custom.
I do, but it's in sizes that I haven't played for a few years (18X22, 8X10, and 16X16)
You prefer a 20 inch kick now Mike? Is it for rack Tom placement reasons or do you prefer the sound of the 20 more?
just what Mike needs...just how many drum sets does one person need? Love Gretsch so much though. His drum collecting is way over the top for me... he could send me one of his many kits not being used, that would help me a ton. ;-)

Mike has nothing compared to some pro drummers. Some pro drummers have crazy amounts of drums.
whoever saw his live stream of him showing the boxes better be glad they didnt bet me on what that kick size was gonna be.
All y’all woulda been out 10 bucks😂
LOL :) 14X20 ftw
Mike Johnston its 14x20 gang out here boiii
The excitement is understandable, sure, nice set,,,,,However, no drummer should act this way, unless you're opening Craviotto set, or Antonio Drums of Croatia, every drummer should experience single ply shell whether steam bent or true solid (carved out of a tree trunk). Maybe for him that’s Grestch USA customs. My craviotto would be a Yamaha Phoneix.
Must be nice...
Definitely some great looking and sounding drums!!
@gretschdrumsusa you can deliver me a set of Renown’s, USA Custom, or Broadcasters any time you like. We can even do an unboxing video if you’d like. Lol
Dude, calm down, it's a brown drum kit... You just gotta wonder, why not a Sonor?
Cause Gretsch SHITS on Sonor......
It’s a free country
Grestch is the American version of sonor.
