I've said this before, I'll say it again. Build your tolerance naturally. I thought Cayenne was super hot when I entered this journey. Then, I kept needing more to get the same level of heat. I started to appreciate the flavor of peppers other than just thinking it's hot. Now, I'm addicted to the pepper world and super hots. I do challenges because I think they're fun and to see what I can handle. I love this pepper world and the thrills it gives me.

If theres a new pepperhead that wants to grow peppers i recommend starting out with a capsicum annuum or frutescens (jalapeño, serrano, numex stuff) they are very fast growers and reward a Lot.
then grow a baccatum and a chinense variety, maybe try something with a bubblegum calyx and finally at the end try growing the rare wild ones like rhomboideum, praetermissum etc
That way You get used to seed germination times and general complexity while You see what You like, Also don't be discouraged if your superhots don't want to sprout they are finicky, get a good Quality seed supplier, sometimes they get sold too old.

I first time I ate a really hot pepper was when I was working at a horse show, and my friend who worked there also worked for a pharmaceutical company that was looking into capsaicin as a topical pain killer. She brought a bag of peppers, fresh picked, and the crew were trying to prove how tough the were. There were lots of tears. As a cook, and fan of Mexican, Thai and Korean food, I locked eyes with a Chocolate Habanero, a particularly hot strain of them, and I was in love. I had Betty send me seeds and have been growing them since 2006. They are beautiful. Have a stable of peppers to grow this season, including the very exciting Bleeding Sawtooth!
Thanks for all you do Johnny & big respect!

My questions for everyone here (and JS too) are:
    1. What is the equivalent fresh pod vs powder of the same pepper. How much powder equals one pod?
    2. How specifically does cooking increase or decrease the heat level?
I ask number 2 because every time I add a pepper or two into a dish I am cooking and it always makes the dish hotter to me when compared to eating the exact same peppers raw pod.
    Can someone explain this please?

Thanks for getting me interested in the world of spice! I always refer people to you. I'm about six months into my tolerance journey and am happy to announce that I can nibble down ghost peppers now. Not the whole pod at once but im still super happy to feel this progress. I heard you say that none of the reaper powder you've tested goes above a million shu's, and that ghosts can sometimes be hotter? That makes me even more pleased with my progress lol. I was recently unable to handle hot cheetos... pshh...NOW, I'm slowly working on my 5th tube of terror, have a bottle of Hellfire's double doomed rebooted (very dangerous sauce), and wear a Capsaicinist t-shirt when shooting at my local pool hall lmao. You completely won me over with your previous tolerance building YT video, so there are probably many other good fer' nothin' millenials like me watching ya 🤘 Today I got Dr. Lall, a neurosurgeon at my work, to try a t.o.t. peanut lol. And many other coworkers too. I'm winning them over now lmao. Sorry to write a whole short story but just wanted to say thanks for the content and that i admire your passion of peppers and spice. I call my quest for heat tolerance "discomfort training". Lol. Cheers from Houston

Habaneros and fatallis are the hottest I go on a regular basis, but when I wanna go on a ride I take out the daggers, I only use a little bit but it’s enough with a good sauce, Hellfire is my favorite so far for that, crazy heat but still so much flavor that even a little bit is enough, I still need to explore more of their flavors but I have a few favorites. Exploring different hot sauces is fun because it gives me ideas for recipes.

Yeah, I ordered a pack of dried ghost peppers... ate a half one, no problem (prolly cuz it was the upper half)... next day did a whole one. Mouth pain was bad but passed rather quickly. 12 hours of agony, it was coming out of both ends, could not get my body to stop dry heaving. Slept on the bathroom floor. Only thing that kept me from going to the hospital was a) pride and b) I knew they couldn't do anything for me. Never again.

After years of simply enjoying spicy foods, mostly via sauces, I finally decided to build my tolerance a couple of weeks back by going for pods.
I'm a mad man. I decided to skip jalapeno and go straight to habanero. One a day. The entire thing, no cutting it in half.
The first few days were misery. Would be reaching for ice water very quickly after the pepper went down the hatch. I know what 2 million shu feels like due to being blasted in the face with oc spray (military training), so the heat wasnt the problem. That sting is insane. Like someone going wild on my tongue with a hole puncher. I persevered though, and made it through 4 days in a row.
However, I took a break the 5th day. The middle of the night cap cramps were almost worse than the sting. I suffer from sleep apnea, so waking up in pain was just pure misery.
Whats interesting is what happened next. I think taking a day to recover boosted my tolerance.
The next day, I went for a habanero. Yeah it burned, yeah it stung... But it was absolutely tolerable. I set a timer for 10 minutes, and not once through that 10 minutes did I feel the need to reach for ice water.
Previously I was reaching for ice water within a minute.
Now I can ride it out without a problem.
... I still have to be mindful of cap cramps though.
Habaneros are the hottest my local grocery store has. I'll be searching up local farmers markets or growers soon. I want to stay on habaneros at least for a little bit longer.

Yuppers all that and more. I in no way thought l was a chili head at the beginning of this journey. I was in complete denial... Much like the drug addict who says... l am not as bad as tommy, but tommy is laying in the alley with a needle. hahaha... Much like in the beginning of my tattoo artist adventure l was comparing myself to the top pros... judging how heavily tattooed l was. I was comparing myself to you and my other favorite... Shaheena hahaha... but as l sit pouring ghost pepper puree in my blazing hot ramen... covered in pleasure goose bumps and shivering. I think maybe ...l have a super hot addiction. 🤣

I'm not sure what to do with you. Part of me wants to correct you and leave your comment here for others to laugh at. The other part of me wants to block you because i think you are a troll.
