    If you want to track calories here is the link to what FitBit I use: amzn.to/3jkrnmx I love how it tracks my sleep, heart rate, and miles. The power will last a week before needing recharged. Weighs just over an ounce. I love it!

    My suggestion take it or leave it is to get you a bike. Use that bike everyday when you are off trail and you can keep the weight off. Riding a bike burns a lot more calories then one would think. It's easy, it's fun, will maintain your muscles in your legs for hiking, keeping the muscle mass also helps keep your metabolic rate up helping to burn more calories. My best friend was 400pounds til we started mountain biking everywhere then he dropped to about 220 in about a year and a half without him actually trying. He didn't start riding to lose weight we were just riding because it's fun him losing the weight was a byproduct of the fun.

      Semper Gumby approves the bicycle suggestion.
      Just a few added tips. A fancy bicycle is not needed, in fact, a more simple bicycle is probably the way to go for those who aren't into all the maintenace, gear shifting and such.
      But there is one thing worth upgrading, especially for older or larger folks: A really good bicycle seat. 🧡

      @@paulrevere2379 heck yeah a nice seat is a must especially for newer riders sore butts can be discouraging.

    Hey dude, I've been watching your videos! Me and my husband have started day hiking to lose weight. We do once or twice a week, we aim at 6-8 hours at a time in mountain terrain (local to us) and I'm really finding your videos inspiring!! Mountain hiking really burns A TON of calories while still being enjoyable and being in nature really helps me focus less on food and more on my physical strength and my surroundings! I hope to see you back online soon, cheers and good luck to you!

    Hey Corey, I noticed that I wasn’t getting any new postings from you. So I came to your channel and saw that you haven’t posted in a couple of months. That is fine. That is cool. Do what you need to do! I might have to go back and watch your beginning videos again. Looking for inspiration. It’s April here in the Pacific Northwest… LOL, well it’s April everywhere… But to my point, I’m out wanting to get some hikes in but I am out of shape! No desire to do the PCT or to walk with alligators and crocodiles in Florida… but I need to get into shape again. Just doing a one and ahalf mile around the golf course is testing me. I’ve never been fully recovered from my heart attack two years ago… No wait three years ago now I think… Time to put on my Merrell hiking shoes. Actually that’s what I’m doing right now before work getting in a mile and a half around the golf course. Anyway keep being an inspiration!

I seem to be able to loose weight better when I stay away from the fast foods and suger, the suger is everywhere, and hard for this old man to stay away from. We will have to fight this battle forever. I homesteader for 18 years and still would be if I hadn’t gotten a lung disease that made me move off of our place at 3600 ft of elevation. Physical and emotional stress can also contribute to getting fat, for two reasons: 1. Stress makes us crave sugar and carbs, 2. Stress releases cortisol (stress hormone) in the organism which causes the fat to store, especially in the abdomen area.

    I've had a Fitbit for 7 years now (different models!) so have a long stretch of data. Some of the real obvious stuff, when I do more, I burn more and I lose more. I also see quite rapid drops in my resting heart rate when my weight goes down (Less mass? More relaxed? More Sleep?). Is it 100% accurate? No, but if it says I did 5000 steps one day and 10,000 the next, then its pretty certain I walked twice as much.

The exercise and other benefits from hiking and being active are important, but it's almost impossible to lose weight without focus on portion control. Everyone has their own story on weight loss. What worked for me was picking 3 calorie laded regulars in my diet and stopping them totally cold turkey. My three (and everyone will have a different three) were Starbucks Mochas, chocolate chip cookies, and mayonnaise. I gave up these Three Big Calorie Items that I had no self-control on except for total absentence. Everything else I allowed myself (except sugar soda drinks - coke - etc. - so maybe it is 4 things.). No seconds allowed - except when I slipped once in a while and then a small plate of the best item in the meal and I did not beat myself up.
    Visiting the scale daily or weekly was too discouraging so I weighted myself every other week. Lost pounds pretty darn effortlessly instead an Iron Discipline for Food and The Scale of which I am not capable.
    Weight loss is a lot like HYOK. Best to you Cory!

    If you are on a Keto or Carnivore diet, you become fat-adapted and do not need or crave carbs... They are completely unnecessary. I run half-marathons and ruck carrying 60-pounds completely fasted almost every day. It's all about the food. Real weight loss happens in the kitchen.

    • @LetsTalkSurvival123

    You say you have an addiction to food. But when you are low in mood what feels good, comfort food. When you were happy the weight was falling off, when you were down you were eating more. We all have an addiction to food as it keeps us alive but some people will reach for the bottle, some will reach for illicit substances and some will reach for food. Food was not an addiction, food was the feelgood factor. Not all large people are like this as some people have thyroid issues for one. But I see here I have talked myself into a corner (lol) and I'm not going to change this. I will leave it as is. Yes, you have an addiction BUT this is linked to your mental well-being. You need to feel good mentally to feel good physically. So what I'm saying I guess is that you don't eat excessively everyday, you do so when you are low in mood or feeling down so finding happiness in what you do and who you surround yourself with is your antidote. You have probably worked this out already but food was not your problem, food was your solution to all problems. Please don't think I'm putting you down Corey (who knows if you ever read these) you are a fantastic guy with so much life, you exude joy and you make so many thousands of people happy by making your videos. Let that be the drug, the impact you have on others, the brightness you bring into someone's dark day. You certainly light up my face when I watch another video (albeit 2 years behind). I am watching video after video. I am one person who you have had an impact on today. If I am one then how many others? Thousands. Keep being you and you will find what you seek. I am convinced that once you finally do then the weight issue will be easier but please remember one thing. Beauty is only skin deep and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Stay Safe and stay well and keep doing what makes you really happy.

    Corey, I started watching you 2 years ago when you were first starting on the PCT. I was inspired by your perseverance and fascinated by your approach to life. After your fall and helicopter rescue I moved on to other viewing interests. I started thinking about you in the last few weeks and finally decided to come back to this channel and check up on you. I'm happy to see that your are still out there doing your thing. I am also happy others are suggesting in the comments to try KETO. I started KETO because of a fitness challenge my wife signed us up for, after two weeks I had a lot less pain and stiffness and was hooked on this way of eating (it's not a diet) and the weight loss was secondary (I needed to lose about 70#). You have to find something that works for you ON or OFF the trail. Keep the faith and as I said keep going - it's good to know you are out there and pushing forward - still an inspiration!

    Look up Paul Gautschi, he does back to eden gardening. Which is what the homesteading movement is about. Moving away from processes food and back to high density nutrient food. The concept is that our agriculture system have moved away from nutrient rich food to those of longer self life, sweeter, bigger, shinier, pest/disease resistant, etc. So we are left with eating nutrient poor food. To compensate for the lack of nutrients, our body demand we eat more. I have tried all kind of diet, from keto to atkins. I would lose a good amount of weight but eventually gain them back, all the while feeling miserable. Now I have a large garden for all my vegetables, a small orchards, 13 chickens for eggs, I raise 100 meat chicken each year, get my beef and pork from my neighbor so I know how the cattle and pig are raised and what they were fed. There's no restriction on my diet, but since my foods are so nutrient rich, I eat less and still feel satisfied. At 56, I'm in the best shape of my life for the past 8 years.
    You don't need sheep, plant a garden and some fruit trees, you'll be amaze how good a strawberry picked when it's ripe instead of those that are picked so they can travel across the country to go on a grocery shelf.

    There is something wrong with the number of calories that will be burned by doing nothing. I usually have to do more than 10,000 steps to burn 2500 calories.

    • @scarroll1555
      @scarroll1555 4 года назад +1

      Number of calories burned is determined by heart rate and body weight.
      A 100lb kid in a coma will burn far less than 300 guy also in a coma.
      It's all relative.

      Whole heartedly agree with your essential point although, in truth, most long distance hiking is still just an easy walk in the park compared to elite US military training. Some of us have done both.
      The good thing about the hiking is that it's so wide open to almost anyone, but it does take that little bit of something special to finally get off the couch (that's an analogy folks), ignore the resistance of those final excuses, and simply get out there.

    • @Drone256
      @Drone256 4 года назад

      @@paulrevere2379 The stress level definitely isn't as high as being in the military but I do believe the calorie burn is. This will vary by person of course. Each night I barely got 2 or 3 hours of sleep because I rolled around in pain. I just loved pushing it too hard. Many days were 25+ miles in the mountains with several 30+. My body was shutting down after months of that. And quite a number of other thru hikers were in the same boat by the end of their hike. During the 2nd half of your hike you just want to finish. You've gotten the experience you wanted and you want to be done but you aren't going to quit. So you push hard the entire time the sun is up.

      @@Drone256 First of all "the military" is as different from elite forces as elementary recess is from running a marathon.
      Second, I thought you were contrasting the reality which 2C is pointing out using numbers with the disbelief reaction many are likely to have with those numbers.
      I may be wrong here, but I like to think that most of 2Cs admirers are bright enough to understand that SCENIC trail adventures were never meant to become a cheap replacement for genuine athletic competition.
      There are actual competitive events out there btw, with legitimate trophies. The true competitors I have known also don't pawn off their participation as the eqivalent of some noble prize.
      Now it may be that a bunch of serious a-holes in the self-promotion business have created a prejudicial negative reputation for all marathoner type hikers. It may take some doing if anyone seriously hopes to change the impression that those are two distinct characteristics only incidentally linked. The rugged quiet types will never be as visible as the egomaniacs.
      As for me, I just simply say that I have my genuine life achievements. Long hiking is not, nor ever will be one of them. Being out in creation and exercising freedom is the reward, not an achievement.

      I have a Fitbit Charge 3 on one arm and a Garmin Instinct Solar on the other or vice versa of both on one arm. In general Fitbit measures about 10 to 25 % more steps and calories. Garmin measures up to 400 % more sleep. A few times I counted 1000 steps myself and noticed that the Garmin only missed 2 or 3 steps. Meanwhile the Fitbit was in la-la land: 1100-1200. I believe my Garmin is more accurate than my Fitbit.

Math and physics are not subject to emotions and feelings. You ARE losing weight and making muscle. ONWARD! Love and hugs 🤗.
