I have a bit of a nerdy question about vowel sounds and how they're represented in Persian. In a word like کیک, which occurs in one of the examples in this video, ی represents more or less the same vowel as the one in the English word 'cake'. How do Persian speakers 'conceive of' this vowel? What I mean is: does the ی produce the 'ay' sound on its own, as it were, or is there understood to be a short e (زیر) below the initial ک?
Thank you for your question! 🙋♀️ The answer to your question is, it is understood to be a short vowel under the level کِ Because the noun کیک is a cognate which means a word from a different language that has similar pronunciation, and meaning. The sound of the letter ی (ye) in کِیک (keyk)is because there’s a short vowel (e) under the letter ِک If the letter ک had no short vowel (e) under, then the pronunciation of ى (ye) would change to an (ea), so کیک would read as (kik) I hope I understood your question correctly. If not, please let me know and I’ll try to explain it another way. The vowel sounds are tricky in the beginning, but with practice, they’ll get better and easier.
The prepositions dar (or tu in informal) as well as the preposition "be" do not really seem to be used that much. Could you clarify when to use them and when not to? In the example, "Yesterday, I did not go outside" I was expecting to see a "be birun" but it did not have it.
The preposition به can be implied. In the spoken language we don’t use it most of the times. Also there are some common places that we don’t use it for - like “home, outside” For example, in English you say: “I went outside” and you don’t use “to” “I went home” and you don’t use “to” The same with Farsi, من بيرون رفتم من خانه رفتم But remember the preposition به is not strictly used in the spoken language, sometimes you see it, sometimes you don’t. It is implied most of the times.
In this video, you pronounced the ezafe between the words hafte and pish like ye (hafte ye pish), but why wouldn't you do it between maah and pish? Why is it maah pish and not maaheye pish? Does it have to do with the alef before it?
That’s a good question. Because هفته ends in silent ـه, so to connect it to the modifier there will be an implied همزه on the letter ـه. هفتهٌ پيش Or an implied ى so ezafe can sit there. هفته(ى) پيش But you don’t see them but you still need to pronounce (ye) Hafte(ye) pish

The correct sentence would be : ما دیشب در رستوران خیلی غذا خوردیم 1) The time adverb comes a little bit earlier in the sentence, usually after the subject - ما دیشب 2) The object غذا is too general and does not trigger را 3) The verb خوردن always comes with a noun which in this sentence is غذا so it needs to be closer to the verb; so imagine the verb is غذا خوردن rather than just خوردن.
