  • A charming family movie directed by James B. Clark. This starred David Ladd,Donald Crisp and Theodore Bikel and featured a wonderfully nuanced music score by Paul Sawtell & Bert Shefter.

Perhaps the most underrated score in cinematic history. Glorious score and film!

Filmed entirely on location in Holland and Belgium in 1959, this film was released in the US in April, 1960, and in the UK at Christmas, 1960. Like most people, I went to see it in 1961, when I was a 14 years old boy and was enchanted by it. It was one of the few films that had me sobbing in my cinema seat, because it was so intensely moving in parts. These days, 56 years later at the age of 70, I still have the DELL Movie Classic comic of it that I bought in 1960 when I was 13 and I also have the original 30 x 40 inches British quad poster; the original British Front-of-House set of eight colour stills; numerous black and white press stills; the wide screen DVD (so much better than the pan and scan version with half the image cropped off); the original American soundtrack LP and an original American 35mm cinema sound trailer for the film, plus the original novel by Ouida. So it's well represented in my collection.

Born in December 1960 myself, I guess I'm going to be adding this to my Birthday/Christmas viewing list this year, and while I'm sure I saw this movie on TV as a child, I don't think I have ever seen it in colour since we had a black and white television for many years and that's how I remember it.

When I lived in Peru a street dog and I adopted each other. I named him Patrache since he was as noble and loyal as The Dog of Flanders

Thanks Zinco, this is one movie that will reduce the stoniest heart to jelly, the lump was in the throat and the tears were not far off. There's nothing like a bit of rose tinted poverty and with Sawtell & Shefter on board, it had me reaching for the box of man sized tissues. :)

First, let me thank you so much for your kindness to us. All is well. I will write more when I figure out how to use the new e-mail protocol.
Next, your lovely video is extremely well composed, as usual. I enjoyed it very much.
Last, I remember seeing Theodore Bikel live on stage when he sang the leading role in Fiddlers on the Roof at a local theater some years ago. What a beautiful voice, such a pleasure to listen to. Did you know that he sang in several languages? A real marvel.
Thank you again for uploading this wonderful family video.
