    The design started off in Fusion 360 with the intent to hold both tealight candles and tapered candles. We used a stereolithography (SLA) 3d printer (the Peopoly Moai) to make a master model. SLA has the advantage over fused filament fabrication (FFF/FDM) because it has a smoother and more accurate surface finish.
    We sealed the SLA print because it can interfere with the silicone curing process by spraying some clear acrylic spray paint. We then applied mold release to prep for the silicone pour! We first tried platinum cure silicone but it was too finicky so we switched to tin cure silicone. We talked with Quikrete about what concrete mix to use and they recommended we use non-shrink precision grout. The main things we liked about this mix is that it was really fine (so it could capture tiny details), it hardened pretty fast, and its final strength is really impressive.

      @@EvanAndKatelyn For something small like this you don't need a vacuum pump and vacuum chamber. You can use a paint pressure pot to compress the bubbles to get a perfectly bubble free mold. The draw back is that the size of the mold has to fit into the pressure pot. Also hot glue and foam core can get you a mold like this in less time. Brick in the yard is actually a great youtube resource. I've made a few molds in my pressure pot, and it's good enough to cast resin in without any bubbles or jagged bumps.

I also noticed that the old videos are more RUclips-y, with lots of background music and stylized shots, like a Tasty video except for crafts. For some reason the newer videos that have less music and simpler shots feel more organic and thus more enjoyable to watch.

    They turned out great. I love the video and the fact you show that everything doesn't go smoothly all the time and even mention its sometimes good to step away from a project to give your time to solve any issues. I find, as I am just starting out, that it helps a lot. I sometimes feel like I am procrastinating until later on when I have a lightbulb moment. Better than getting frustrated and throwing a project across the workshop. Anyway great video!

    Quick tip from an engineering student who has worked with sla printers:
    While curing your parts in uv does make them more rigid, it also makes them more brittle. Meaning that for uses like this, it might be worth it to leave the material uncured because it will be more malleable (spelled that wrong probably, engineering, not English) and won't break as easy.
    I love y'alls channel!

    For the center part, leaving a little hole for air to escape and "squish" it into the latex would have worked too. As for the outer part, maybe make it into 2 parts taped together to make it easier to unmold ? The outer part doesn't need to be perfect as it won't be used to shape the final product anyway.

    The outer walls serve a specific purpose, to hold the negative mold above ground. It would save you material to just have smaller contact points

    • @EvanAndKatelyn

      Not sure I'm understanding, what do you mean by contact points?

    • @JacquelineUnderwood
      @JacquelineUnderwood 5 лет назад

      EvanAndKatelyn I think they meant to use a smaller container so your mold isn’t as thick and you don’t have to use as much silicone?

    If you pour the silicone with a really thin "stream" it has a better chance of flowing out everywhere and the amount of air is reduced a lot.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад

      Yes! We did find that out and went into it a bit more in another video

    • @ricardrin
      @ricardrin 6 лет назад

      Nice of you to reply all of the comments I make. :)
      Another good practice use by many professionals using silicone is to pour the mix into a second container and mix again. If you are only using one container for mixing it it almost impossible to get everything from the walls and bottom mixed. In worst case this will result in uncured silicon in some places.
      Great channel btw, makes me want to play with silicone again. :)

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад

      We definitely need to do that!! When we hung out with Bill and Britt from Punished Props (they do a lot of molding and casting) that was one of the biggest tips they shared. Next time for sure!

  • @mrtendo

    Next time you do that with a print. Try spraying to Mold Release inside the print before you put the silicone in side the mold. It will help so it wont be to hard to remove and will be easier to remove then Clear Acrylic

    All the grunts, Evan! Ha ha. These turned out really cool. I thought they looked cool 3D printed but the concrete really lights the way for future iterations. (Had to)

      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад

      Haha!! We could probably make a video entirely of the sitting down and standing up grunts I make lol. And thanks!! One worry about the totally 3D printed version was heat, but concrete can hold up to it for sure!

  • @doubleV4
    @doubleV4 6 лет назад +1

    On the first mold you could've left a "pipe" so that silicone could better get to actual part holding the candle. And after you pull it of from the mold trim it off, and the surface which you trimmed off, wouldn't show since you put a candle on top (or if you trim it carefully it wouldn't matter).. Hope you get what I mean, but atleast you got it working on the second time around.. Cool project!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 лет назад
