Awesome vid. I'm 69 and my sister and I grew up with The Beatles. How 4 boys from a small English town changed the entire world forever, still amazes me and always will. We'll never see anything like them again. Ever. Greetings from southern Pennsylvania.
This is a beautiful piece of work. Lovely, thoughtful visuals, down to earth local knowledge, excellent original research, evocative archive photographs, sensible and fascinating analysis. All put together in a fabulous synthesis. The insight into the lyrics and importance of this track is excellent, showing again two geniuses competing and collaborating in an almost mystical way. Paul's "in my ears and in my eyes" is so good, and Lennon just flashes magic with "though she feels as if she's in a play, she is anyway". Top quality content from Brightmoon!
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. I love the stories behind the songs they wrote and this is my favourite. I've lived by Penny Lane for over 30 years now and love it here.
Your books, videos and historical narration helps those of us who live oceans away and have never visited Liverpool enjoy and have a deeper understanding of Beatle history. Even by traveling there and taking in the packaged tourist trips and traps I doubt they focus on the details with the depth you do. Additionally, your raw street level walkabout videos interposed with historical photos and stories have made this sexagenarian Beatlemaniac feel he could visit as a returning friend instead of a novice tourist and not get lost. Thank you!
Oh thank you so much for your kind comments. It is why I started writing all those years ago, because I wanted every Beatles fan to experience Liverpool, and the importance to the Beatles, even if they couldn't get here. Our channel allows me to do even more, so I am glad you are enjoying what we do.
Thank you for your work on this video. For me, the song Penny Lane is a masterpiece of the Beatles era. I've been a fan of The Beatles since around the early 1970's. To this day there is always something new, previously unknown to discover.
Glad you enjoyed it. I also didn't come across the Beatles until the 70s as I wasn't born until 65. Penny Lane is an incredible song, that was transformed once I understood what it all meant. They were geniuses. David
Great final episode to your three part story of Penny Lane .It was nice to learn of Johns contribution to the song and how three Beatles lives were interwoven into the story of the song ! Enjoyed your Beatles tale David , superb research skills mate !👍👍🎸😎🎸 BB . L16
I didn't know this amazing video! I'm Brazilian, and next year (2025) I will visit London and Liverpool, because I'm Beatles fan. I intend to visit Penny Lane and other places that talk about The Beatles. It must be my most fantastic travel indeed. Thank you for your video. I have learned a lot of things.
this is a great factual story about penny lane i was born and bread in the area and often came across john and paul while i waited for the number 46 bus to take me to walton from penny lan
Well put together ! It all makes sense now , especially having walked the true length of the Lane , only last week , which was truly memorable. Love and Peace ☮️ to one and all , Lester , from London
Wow-what! 3:05 John's iconic Roll Royce cruises by! How did you do that?! Awesome. Magic! And a total mind bending time warp! I hope Paul sees this video! Well done Sir! Best one second I've seen in any video on RUclips, and that's a lot of videos!
From the states. Thank you for putting this together for us. Did a great job of getting all things mentioned in the song included and how they fit in. Left out the "Finger Pies", I can understand you not wanting to include it, but it was part of the story also. As a young teenager in the sixties I just thought it meant small fruit pies you would just eat with your hands. Something your mother might pack with your lunch for that day as your desert. Thanks again for the great narration and camera angels.
It is a pleasure to do this for you - yes, thought it best to brush over the fish n finger pies! The naughty bits might be another video! Glad you enjoyed it.
I am currently learning Penny Lane on my bass guitar. I really appreciate learning the history behind the songs I learn. Thank you for sharing your video.
I can’t tell you how much i enjoyed this insight into Penny Lane, I have almost completed a 2 foot circular model railway diorama, called Penny Lane, my favourite Beatles song, and although I knew it was a real place, I never knew the significance of the words. My diorama is a reference to the Beatles, Penny Lane station off Abbey Road, and another dozen titles fitted in. Living in the New Forest, it’s a bit too far to visit Penny Lane, but who knows!!!
Thank you. I am a Beatles historian and author of several books on the Beatles, helped make the documentary feature film "Looking for Lennon" with Roger Appleton at Brightmoon Media, and also a Beatles tour guide in Liverpool! A bit of podcasting too!! And of course making videos for this channel!
I take it this is where they came up with the name Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band aswell? This is a very interesting part of history when The Beatles came along.
I always thought she was "serving" "puppies" from a tray and thought they were "hush puppies". It was the ONLY was I make sense of the song. We hand out POPPIES, little red (plastic) flowers on Veterans Day here in the USA.
9:30 Great detective work! I always feel "And though she feels as if she's in a play/ She is anyway" was a Lennon line somehow - - a bit of a downbeat twist. Whoever takes responsibility for it, I think it's the best line The Beatles ever did.
Dave, I'm sure I read somewhere that Yoko Ono bought the house and completely renovated it?? Also John was killed on the 8th of December 1980 around 10.50 EST, but the time difference in Liverpool GMT meant it was the 9th... 4am GMT...
Thank you for these very interesting videos. Also in the original lyrics to In My Life, it mentions getting the number 5 bus into town and refers to going past 'The Dutch and St Columba's'. The Dutch presumably refers to 'The Dutch Cafe' which was not very far along from 'Penny Lane' on Smithdown Road. Am I right in thinking this was a late night haunt of The Beatles? According to John's old Dovedale and Quarry Bank school friend, Michael Hill, Pete Shotton once managed the place. The building is a bathroom showroom now. However, I am intrigued by a windmill symbol that is still on the building with the word 'Cafe' on it. Is this an original sign? It looks too modern in design to me to be original. Even if it isn't the original, it's interesting that it's been placed there presumably in memory of The Dutch Cafe. Also of interest, just before you get to there from Penny Lane is Holyoake Hall. I believe this was a venue which the early Beatles played at. You can still see the Holyoake Hall sign on the building. The building currently houses The Crafty Swine pub and one or two other places. Look up towards the top of the building and you will see the Holyoake Hall sign. St Colomba's was a Prestyterian Church further along Smithdown Road, near the junction with Ullet Road. It's now been converted into residential property but the red brick church tower still stands.
Thanks Robert. I will be doing a video on those original In My Life lyrics, which I wrote about in my book, Liddypool. I know the area well and all of those locations you mentioned. Pete Shotton worked at the Dutch Café, though we now know he didn't own it. The Windmill is a repainted version of the original that was in the same place, signifying the Dutch windmills, the Dutch Café. It is a fascinating look at the original thoughts of John before he rewrote the song. Glad you are enjoying the videos and thank you for your input here too. David
Fascinating. I hope you will make a video about Paul's various childhood homes. His dad was cotton salesman so they moved home several times. I've tried to find the location of his Walton home around Scotty Road but I think it has been knocked down.
Good call, I can do that. His home wasn't in Walton but Anfield, near to the stadium. One of his was demolished years ago - Sir Thomas White Gardens. Will put that on a list to do, thank you.
Nice post, but it was written by Paul McCartney not with John. I’m sure John had a little input. But this is one of the songs that he wrote separately. Paul wrote this when he was 16 years. Also, before someone corrects me, please google and advance. Thank you for the beautiful trip down Penny Lane.
Thank you. However, John wrote the last verse. The whole story of the pretty nurse was John's story, and that is all about hom and Pete Shotton. Paul also said that John came over and helped him with the last verse. That is how they worked. One would write 80% of the song, and the other finish it off. By the end, they were writing almost completely separately, but Penny Lane was one they shared, because it was a place that meant a lot to both of them.
When I went on the Magical mystery tour trip only about 3 or 4 years ago.. Just before the Covid lock downs.. The fire station was pointed out.. It was there but closed down and it was said there were petitions to get it re opened.. Does anyone know if that was successful or is it still closed?
The doors are now at Penny Lane Development Trust and the Fire Station is being transformed into housing, though keeping the authenticity of the building.
I suppose everyone knows about "Four of fish, and finger pies." Four of fish is a portion of fish and chips, and finger pie is a vulgar sexual description of what boys do to girls when they know bugger all about sex, and are feeling their way around, based on what the other lads, who themselves know bugger all about sex, tell them....

Very good and sad memories for John and Paul 😮
Penny Lane held good memories of childhood for them.
Did anyone notice about 3 minutes in a multi coloured Rolls Royce drive past just like the one John Lennon used to have?
I left it in deliberately

Very well documented and very accurate
