- A detailed look at the genuine Tesla Roof Bars for the Tesla Model 3. These bars are really high quality and are surprisingly easy to put on and off.
There are reports on the internet about how these bars can crack the Tesla Model 3 glass roof so I pay particular attention to how that might happen and explore what might be causing that.

Awesome video! It's super helpful that you included the sound and range test. Really appreciate that. It sounds great compared to a tack on my ice vehicle.
Just installed my Model 3 roof bars today, and this guide has been the most useful one I've found. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Really informative mate. All the right info. Thanks!
Absolutely excellent….no cutsey bs, straightforward, informative..thank you.
Great video - really helpful. Thanks for this
Thanks for this great information. Very helpful. The sound difference is minimal, something that isn't the norm with roof bars. Interesting note is that at least in your test the range seems to be slightly improved with the bars. I wouldn't expect that, but in any case it's apparent that we're not losing much if any range with just the bare bars. Of course anything added on top of them will be another story. Thanks again, valuable test and information.
Very helpful video, many thanks
That's a really useful video. Thanks.
Great video. Thank you!
Top video ben. Thanks

Great, review and style. Refreshing change from all the RUclips hoopla.
I appreciate that!
thanks for the video.
Hi Ben. I really enjoy watching videos. Keep up the great work. Do you think you could measure the length of the roof bar t slots as I'm trying to work out how many the bike holders I can get on. Thanks.
A nice one ! Give me lots of confidence to install one myself. !
Abslutely true…i wasn’t confident about the roof bars nor installing them..first, I decided to not be penny wise and pound foolish when I saw someone on youtube crack the glass roof installing roof bars and bought the genuine Tesla ones. Your video was simple and direct with just the essential information.
Hi Ben, really useful video, do you know the height from the floor to the top of the bar? Thanks!!
I don't even own a car, i watched the whole video, OG fans here. Good job Ben 👍
Can you do a video on security features of model 3?
Thanks! Will add to the roadmap!
I really want these genuine Tesla roof bars but they seem to be permanently out of stock. Any more experienced Tesla Model 3 owners know how to find out when they are going to be available or what other after market bars are as good.
Great vid. Super clear shots and equally clear commentary. I shall subscribe!
In stock on Tesla app in the UK at the moment.
Thanks for sub and comment 😀
Can you do the audio test on a model Y by chance?
Thanks for a very informative video. Do you have a rough idea of range impact with 2 bikes on the roof? Thanks!
It basically depends if you’re going over 50mph - if you keep it under 50 it’s minimal. Once you’re at motorway speeds though it starts to drop off. If I look at my energy prediction for the route, I seem to remember loosing about 5% off the predicted end level as a result of doing 20miles at 70mph.
I installed them and there is a decline from back to front. Is that normal? I.e. it's not 180 Degrees level
I just ordered these from Tesla but am scared about cracking the roof as others have done. Great vid anyhow thanks.
Same here. I'm probably just going to buy a simple torque wrench to be safe.
Great video … may I ask what bike carriers you’ve attached to the roof bars and how do you align them (facing alternate directions, same direction, spacing etc?).
Thule Bike Carriers I use:
Amazon UK amzn.to/3otYcRT
Amazon US amzn.to/3J7Hlwk
I just did them so the side nearest the edge of the car was ‘open’ - I.e the gripper for the bike frame releases the bike towards the edge.
@@BenVallack Many thanks … I was looking at the same ones. Good advice on alignment.
Thanks Ben. Out of curiosity, what roof box (if any) do you have? Interested to know what's the best option for M3 when it comes to size/aerodynamic/range.
I actually use a basket, thule canyon XT, I havn’t actually used it on the model 3 yet. I will do a video once I have done some tests!
@@BenVallack Good to know. Thanks!
What have you carried on those roof racks and what kind of hit do you take on range
Details in this video ruclips.net/video/dfUVkBgeZ6I/видео.html cheers!
Have you tried them at highway speeds~70mph? I noted that there were many complaints about the noise of 3rd party roof racks made for Model 3. I’ve never driven with bikes on the roof, but I assume that might be quite noisy on any car. What’s your experience? Thanks much.
Generally not an issue. Bit noisier as you’d expect but the double glazing etc isolates it very well.
Can I ask what size T slot bolts are required (the square plate which inserts into the slot itself) to attach the Thule bike rack to the Tesla bars? Thule didn’t seem to know 🤦🏻♂️ many thanks in advance
The ones that came with the Thule bike carrier fit mine.
Great to come back to your video for a rewatch before fitting. So many horror story’s but these are possibly the easiest roof bars to fit! And so nicely made! I managed to dig out the original T-slot bolts which you are correct fitted nicely on the bars. I’ve got three different size sets now over the years.
For the Y, did you go for official Roof Bars again, or would you look at tessories etc?
Official - not taking any chances with the glass roof!
@@BenVallack good point, well made!
Comparing the hooked/flat "wing" to bolt on the official bars to any of the aftermarket racks: note the official version is welded full length vs just a couple tack welds on the aftermarket. This reputedly was the failure point on the very early factory bars.
Anyone know where to buy those stickers? Bought rails from my friends and he didnt have those stickers... Dont want damage on the paint..
Might be worth phoning your service center. Otherwise you might be able to buy sheets of it. It was 3M branded but not sure what type.
@@BenVallack I just use 3M helicopter tape. I use it to protect my bicycle frames too
So not flat? My halfords roof box looks like it won't fit
I guess it depends how much tolerance there is for the curve in the box
How long did it take to deliver?
A good few weeks if I recall.
Hi Ben. I’ve used your videos to help with my model 3 roof bar install. No matter what I do I find the rear left pad always contacts the roof glass - rather than having a nice gap between them. Have you experienced anything like this?
My rear right gets closer than the others but there is still a gap. If you still don’t see a gap with very light tightening I would take it in to them and ask why it’s different to the others and see what they say.
@@BenVallack I have scheduled a visit to my local service centre this week. I find the gap closes at around 1Nm which feels too little to be touching the roof.
@@mikeodonnell8213 what was the conclusion?
@@acirillo59 the service centre agreed I was installing the roof bars correctly. They reviewed the gap (or lack of) and said it was acceptable and they’re happy for it to touch the glass as long as the torque setting is at the recommended low setting.
I guess that the tolerance of the bracket holding the J plate might be too big and not well alighted with other 3. I would check the brackets before deciding whether to install roof rack. The problem seems to be common as I heard a few other complaining the seem from various Web forums .
So range was not hurt with the bars. Why not leave them on? No sound difference I could hear
I actually did end up leaving them on!
@@BenVallack cool. I am getting my 2nd model 3 and thought this would be a great option
just can't believe these are £400. Seem about twice the price they should be!
Yeah kind of nuts, but they are definitely very well made.
Really? Slightly less consumption with racks fitted? Not worth removing then.
Great video, thank you!
