My question is why did they not evacuate the civilians before they decided to go all patriot. At least the women and children before you started the fighting or was that the plan to use them as human shields.
That was kinda the plan for the Republic, corner the empire into either retreating and taking the logistic loss or fight in a meat grinder that is urban warfare restrained by international law. But thanks to Tanya's college paper detailing how to fight in an urban scenario without holding back (the mother of all loopholes & technicalities) the Republic's plan backfired and ended up losing a good chunk of their elite mages in the process.
@@adjinn9700 The kicker is that Tanya's loophole STILL gave them the time to evacuate. At that point, no fault to blame but their own... but of course that's not how they see it cause of reasons later explained.
That "Revenge before Reason" trope is in full effect with a lot of this series....

the only thing i dont like when i read the manga is you know what the end of the empire is and just telling you the story going to it...

can't really spoil much as the last time I read the manga was more than a year ago, but pretty much the war ended (iirc empire lost, but again, I don't trust my memory). The actions of the empire was still being debated, although the majority, if not all, concludes that they never did any war crimes and violated any international law.
As for Tanya, her identity was totally a mystery and there were characters who were trying to figure out information about her and her batallion. If I'm not wrong, they are one of the most kept secret by the empire. (Edit: just to make this clear, it was also still being considered that "the devil of the Rhine" also known as "the argent" was just a propaganda. Again, information about them were well kept hidden.)
Well a bit tangent, but the one who was "blessed" to design her orb still remained a devout believer and was also interviewed. Forgot what they talked about tho.
All of these are only up to when I last read it, and novel readers should be able to spoil more. If you're really interested, you should try browsing through the wiki if you don't want to read the manga or the novel.

Now that I think about it, the opening of the movie is the aftermath of the world war after the empire has lost, interesting.
The online novel has already been completed, but that is without some of the characters that appear in the anime.
Also, the novel, the product version of which the manga was based on, is still in progress.
To hint a little further down the road, the empire does indeed lose, but there are interesting stories about how they lost, what happened in the command center in the defeat, and whether or not Tanya survived, so let's look forward to that!
