Fast up or down vertical movement tends to spook birds off for some reason. I've found birds in my X8 photos and videos taken while flying high and far away. I never saw them near the drone real time. I suspect many instances of drones suddenly falling out of the sky are due to bird attacks. Especially during breeding and nesting season when birds are more aggressive.
