Extra time is our "no rules" review format that goes deeper into why i like, or do not like a game we have covered in the 3 minute format. This one is for everyone wondering why i gave Underwater cities the gold medal.

In general, I'm loving these "extra time" videos. Great format for more detail. Your perspective is appreciated!

Cheers. It's great to stretch the legs a little. I love our core format, and its not going anywhere. But it has its limits.

"I like long games, I like games with lots of decisions, and I'm a sucker for a Sci-fi theme. And UC does all that. Just like Gaia Project, and just like TM."
Good sir, I think we have similar game tastes haha. I have all three games, and the expansions for each!

UC is my favourite game. You capture why I like this game so much here. Doing the best with what you got. That part reminds me of another favourite Castles of Burgundy.
I love that I have had almost no rule questions playing this game. Everything is on the cards.

    • @3MBG

Yeah, quite like COB, especially in terms of tight decisions each turn. And yeah, the rules are very straight forward

You still remain my favorite board game channel on RUclips. I feel your recommendations have always paid off the best for me when I get the games. I got Brass Birmingham and this one looks awesome! Love Gaia Project too.

The tightness from the limited actions is what sets it apart from similar games like TM in my opinion. It’s a condensed fighting ring, and if you’re not maximizing the efficiency of your actions it will be hard to win.

What you described so well, about not figuring the game out yet. I’m that way with Rurik and that’s why I enjoy Rurik. For me, Once the challenge is gone the fun is also gone.

They are weirdly similar, yet totally different. It's one of those wacky things that the scratch a similar itch, but in a very very different way.

I'm right there with you on UC (as well as TM and GP). It's well worth checking out Vladimír Suchý's previous game Pulsar 2849 which is a very good meaty dice drafting game which flew under the radar a bit.

    • @3MBG

Underwater Cities has been in my Top 5 since it came out. Clean design and crunchy decision-making. I agree 100% with what you said about the luck factor: it's about doing the best you can with what you're given - that's what sets the good players apart.
P.s. Underwater trumps Terraforming Mars for me.

On Mars is an excellent games, but it's very complex. There is a slight symbiotic relationship between players, who need to work together to develop the base but also need to do their own thing to win the game.

Oooooh, interesting! I'm glad you did this one. I watched your other two and was about to buy. But, now I have a question... would you say UC is as "tight" (aka. excruciatingly painful) as Through The Ages? I absolutely hate TTA because every turn is agony. I love the "freedom" and ability to actually accomplish something that TM provides.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  3 года назад +1

Different type of tight to TTA as you can always do something. In TTA, sometimes the only thing you can do is disband something and go backwards.

You say bad dice rolls can be over come and in economic games that is true. But, wargames unfortunately dice rolls are everything and I have the kind of luck that I'm better off just painting the miniatures.

Disagree. I went from bottom tier wargamer to winning competitions, it wasn't my dice luck that changed, it was practice
